Helix Firmware v1.12.0 Release Notes
Helix 1.12.0 is a free update that includes new fixes, stability improvements, and optimizations.

IMPORTANT! READ BEFORE INSTALLING ANY NEW SOFTWARE!

1. Shut down all Line 6 software as well as any software that streams audio, including, but not limited to: iTunes, Spotify, DAWs, etc.

2. Use your CURRENT EXISTING Helix application to back up all of your presets and IRs. If you're running Helix FW 1.06 or 1.06.5, your current Helix application version should be 1.04. If you're running Helix FW 1.10, your current Helix application version should be 1.11.

3. Quit the CURRENT EXISTING Helix application and download and install the NEW Helix editor (1.12.0), available here: http://line6.com/software/ This also installs the newest version of Line 6 Updater (1.09).

4. If you're using Helix Rack with Helix Control, turn off Helix Control.

5. Using the new Line 6 Updater (1.09), update Helix (or Helix Rack) to the newest firmware (1.12.0). If you're using Helix Rack with Helix Control, after Helix Rack has been updated, connect and power on Helix Control, and it will update automatically.

6. Using the latest Helix editor (1.12), restore all user presets and IRs.

New Features
- Compatibility with the full version of the Helix editor (1.12)

Bug Fixes
- A USB port driver issue within OS X El Capitan precluded certain computers (namely MacBook Pros and iMacs from mid-2012) from allowing communication between Helix and the Helix Editor. Note: You must update OS X to El Capitan 10.11.4 - FIXED

- Helix could not correctly respond to incoming MIDI CC #64 (Tap Tempo) - FIXED

- Helix could sometimes not correctly respond to incoming MIDI PC messages after exporting and then reimporting the same setlist - FIXED

- The Tuner screen's Output parameter would not remember its value across power cycles - FIXED

- Changing Input or Output types from the Controller Assign screen could sometimes automatically engage the Learn Controller button - FIXED

- Input > Multi and Input > Variax Tone parameter could sometimes maintain its value across presets, even when set to 'Per Preset'

- Helix Rack's TAP/TUNER button was unresponsive while in Pedal Edit mode - FIXED

- Expression pedals with inverted polarity could cause Helix Rack to freeze when connected to Helix Control - FIXED

- If two footswitches' assignments are quick-swapped while in the Controller Assign screen, the most recent assignment could be removed - FIXED

- The Looper block's icon could incorrectly reflect its state after saving a preset - FIXED

- General stability improvements

- Many other minor bug fixes and optimizations

KNOWN ISSUES
- After a Factory Reset, Global Settings > Ins/Outs > XLR Outputs level appears as Line level but is actually Mic level until you move the knob to "Mic" and back to "Line"

- On rare occasions, if Helix is disconnected from the computer within 10 seconds of shutting down the Helix editor, MIDI transmission may become inactive. Always wait 10 seconds after quitting the Helix editor before disconnecting. If you forget, power cycling Helix solves the issue.

- If you send MIDI CC #59 to Helix, it toggles the control between your bypass-assigned blocks for this switch, but the EXP 1 - EXP 2 Toe Switch strip label does not change states as it does when toggled via the on-board pedal.

Helix Firmware 2.01 Release Notes

Helix v2.01.0 is a firmware update that includes fixes, stability improvements, and optimizations. It is highly recommended that all Helix users perform this update!

IMPORTANT! YOU *MUST* FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO INSTALL 2.01!

1. Shut down all Line 6 software as well as any software that streams audio, including, but not limited to: iTunes, Spotify, DAWs, etc.

2. Use your CURRENT EXISTING Helix application to back up all of your presets and IRs (if you want to keep them). If you're running Helix FW 1.12, your current Helix application version should be 1.12.

NOTE: You may want to back up individual Setlists so you can restore them to empty setlists without affecting the new 2.01 factory presets.

3. Quit the CURRENT EXISTING Helix editor application and download and install the NEW Helix editor application (2.01), available here: http://line6.com/software/ This also installs the newest version of Line 6 Updater (1.09).

4. If you're using Helix Rack with Helix Control, turn off Helix Control.

5. Using the latest Line 6 Updater (1.09), update Helix/Helix Rack to the newest firmware (2.01). At the end of the update process, Helix/Helix Rack will reboot automatically and begin rebuilding presets. Wait for this process to complete.

6. If you're using Helix Control with Helix Rack, connect and power on Helix Control. The inspector will ask if you want to update its firmware. Press Knob 6 (OK). Wait for the update to finish.

YOU MUST RESET GLOBALS AND RESTORE PRESETS, OTHERWISE HELIX 2.01 WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY. DO IT. DO IT NOW:

7. To reset globals and restore presets, turn off Helix/Helix Rack.

HELIX FLOOR ONLY: While holding footswitches 9 and 10 (middle two switches on the bottom row), turn on Helix. Wait for the message "Will reset Globals and restore stock Presets, Setlists and IRs..." to appear and let go.

HELIX RACK ONLY: While holding knobs 5 and 6 below the screen, turn on Helix Rack. Wait for the message "Will reset Globals and restore stock Presets, Setlists and IRs..." to appear and let go.

8. Using the NEW Helix editor application (2.01), restore the user presets you backed up in step 2.

Improvements

- In addition to Tap Tempo, Snapshots and footswitches-as-controllers now also respect the Global Settings > Preferences > Tap Tempo Pitch setting

- 2.0 changed the default Guitar In-Z setting to "Auto" for new presets. Existing factory presets now also reflect this value

Bug Fixes

- Certain elaborate pre-2.0 presets with many controller assignments could sometimes fail to rebuild properly after updating from v1.x to v2.x firmware - FIXED

- Making parameter changes while changing snapshots can cause Amp+Cab parameters to display incorrect values - FIXED

- In rare cases, pressing the SAVE button twice in rapid succession could freeze Helix - FIXED

- After changing a Looper block to a Volume or Wah block, you could not change it back to a Looper block - FIXED

- In rare cases, navigating to a Merge > Mixer block on Path 2 could cause Helix to freeze - FIXED

- Turning the joystick to select a model and then pressing it before the model fully loads could sometimes result in the wrong item highlighted in the model list - FIXED

- In some cases, Multi and Guitar Input blocks' Guitar In-Z parameter would not be recalled correctly - FIXED

- Helix Rack only: The Tap Tempo LED could reengage after turning Global Settings > Displays > Tap Tempo LED off - FIXED

- Using a footswitch to very quickly toggle a parameter with only two values could sometimes not engage reliably - FIXED

- The new 2.0 pitch algorithms could behave strangely when playing certain chord forms - REVERTED

- General stability improvements

- Other minor bug fixes and optimizations

Known Issues

- Changing presets from the Editor while a block is picked up via the ACTION button can lead to instability

- Loading a new Snapshot from the Editor while Helix displays the Rename Snapshot page can lead to incorrect inspector items

QuoteAlso interesting is that my flat response Audio Technica headphones (these) sound really, really, bad. The budget Sony (these) headphones sound a whole heap better.
Digital Igloo(Line-6) replied:
Those ATH-M50X's are 38 Ω? That could explain it. Low impedance headphones are designed to provide ample volume when listening to devices with relatively wimpy headphone amps, like mobile phones and iPods. Another user elsewhere expressed concern with his Beyer DT990s (which come in three variants—32 Ω, 250 Ω, and 600 Ω) and I'm willing to bet his are 32 Ω.

I'm actually surprised your Sonys sound any better, as they're even lower, at 24 Ω.

Helix's headphone amp is LOUD; it's designed to drive high-impedance studio headphones to stage volumes. Low impedance headphones distort way faster, fatigue your ears, and at a high enough volume, can damage your hearing. With Helix you could conceivably split the headphone output to two pairs of 200-300 Ω cans/IEMs and drive both over the sound of a drummer (and adjust respective levels via MIDI CC control of path output blocks). My band does this now.

Personally, I use Sennheiser HD600s (300 Ω), and before those, the HD580s (same). Also have a bunch of Sony 7506s around, but they're 63 Ω and harsh-sounding already, even with an iPod. I also keep a pair of Sennheiser HD280 Pros (64 Ω) at work and they're pretty boxy sounding, but if I can get a mix to sound good on them, it'll sound good anywhere. I treat them like wearable Yamaha NS10s, if those NS10s were powered by an Alesis RA100 instead of a Bryston. Wouldn't want to construct tones with them.

On the subject of Hi-Z phones: Are there any other Signet (Audio-Technica) fans out there?  The TK-22s are my all-time favorite for reference use.  Just picked up a second lightly-used pair on eBay.

I really like mine for critical listening.  And, for extra credit, the ear cushions are made out of a cloth material that doesn't seem prone to degrading.

One thing is was wondering about the Helix: the display above the expression pedal always seems to read EXP1/EXP2 on every picture of the Helix. Is that really the only thing it can display?

http://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/fractal-vs-helix-the-comparison-series-made-by-yours-truly.1757067/page-12

It seems to me there are quite a few buzz words thrown around, depending on your preference between the units.

If you don't like the Helix, the cabs are "harsh."
If you do like the Helix, it's more "raw" or "real."
If you don't like the Fractal, it's too "dark."
If you do like the Fractal, it's "smooth" or "pleasing."

And no one is wrong! It's all down to preference, and I think you guys are getting that.

From my experience in miking cabs and taking my own impulses, NEITHER unit sounds unrealistic or over-processed, and I think that's something I should've made more clear. Even though I'm skeptical of the ways the Helix's hybrid cabs were captured, I won't tell you that it's impossible to make an actual mic on an actual cab sound the way the Helix does, and I think that is an accomplishment on its own, truly. In the same way, the Fractal cabs are undoubtedly smoother or darker, but I don't think that's due to any sort of chicanery; I think that's due to careful mic choice and placement, which is something I prefer personally. Careful mic placement in this regard likely isn't possible with the capture of the Helix cabs, if my theory behind them is correct. But that's a whole other issue. End of the day, it really is all personal preference.

Cliff's direct thoughts are these (http://forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/fractal-irs.62159/page-3#post-772349)
"The factory IRs were hand-selected by me after auditioning thousands of OH and RW and other IRs. Some of the IRs are custom mixes of mine. My rule-of-thumb was to select as neutral sounding IRs as possible.

However, what I like may be much different than what others like. Some people complain the Axe-Fx sounds too bright. Others say it's not bright enough. It's a no-win situation. This is why I've been harping on capturing IRs. It's personal preference. Producers probably spend more time perfecting mic placement than anything else when getting guitar tones to tape. An IR is the same thing, it's capturing the mic and placement. Encouraging IR capture and sharing those IRs was a goal of mine but, alas, the community hasn't done much in that regard.

FWIW, I don't subscribe to "flavored" IRs (i.e. Warm or Fat or whatever). I do like the idea of using different preamps to capture the coloration of those preamps but I don't feel any additional EQ should be applied."

A year and a half after introduction they finally add support for Variax Workbench.  Line 6 gets me scratching my head in amazement sometimes...

We decided early on to leverage IdeaScale and let the customers decide what should go into Helix. That said there is a pretty robust roadmap of things that need to get into Helix for the longer term product plan that have to be done in a specific order. It may not look like it makes sense on the surface but there is always an underlying reason for the order in which we continue to add functionality.

Does the current hardware support the roadmap, or will this involve a Helix 2.0?  Just curious!

Yes. Helix has a bunch of future-proofing built in. There is stuff we have not yet turned on in there. The team did a great job of creating a long-term platform and forward thinking.

Improvements/Changes

If a Snapshot has been given a custom switch colour, that switch ring now displays a dim colour when not active

12 of Helix's 17 reverbs originally appeared in M-Class processors and Verbzilla. As such, they've been moved into the new "Legacy" subcategory within the Reverb category

Helix's tempo no longer responds to pressing TAP at tempi lower than 40.0 BPM (Beats Per Minute). This is to ensure that multiple fast tap entries are recognized properly, as previously, they could be seen as one really slow tap entry. You may still manually select a tempo all the way down to 20.0 BPM and your presets can still be saved with tempi down to 20.0 BPM—just touch TAP and turn Knob 6 (BPM)
