QuoteMain problem with Presonus' approach is that these devices are almost useless in a studio environment without the VSL mixer software. The latencies these devices operate at without the near-zero latency monitoring are mildly off putting.

Exactly! and lack of access to the the 1818VSL Mixer and lack of  ability to enable real time monitoring while tracking vocals makes you wish you purchased a Focusrite or RME instead.

* Please Note: Starting with OS X 10.11, Apple has restricted kernel level mixing access for third party vendors. This means that the included VSL software will no longer function on Mac operating systems beyond version 10.10. On OS X version 10.11 or higher, AudioBox VSL devices will only operate as low-latency, class-complaint audio interfaces.

The minimum system requirements may differ for DAWs other than Studio One. Please check the requirements for your DAW of choice with its manufacturer.

Note that the speed of your processor, amount of RAM and size and speed of your hard drive will greatly affect the overall performance of your recording system. Also, a more powerful system (faster processor with more RAM) will allow for lower latency (signal delay) than you might experience while monitoring audio or MIDI signals. Monitor resolution for both PC and Macintosh should be no lower than 1024x768 pixels.

Ready for OS X El Capitan

12/2015 Compatibility to Mac OS X 10.11

OS X ready

Due to the big number of incoming questions about compatibility of RME audio interfaces to Apple's latest Mac OS X 10.11, also known as El Capitan, RME would like to point out that RME drivers work without known issues under 10.11 as well as 10.11.1. Also note that RME did not have to change or modify drivers for El Capitan, which is a statement in itself on RME's code quality and driver design.

RME FireWire interfaces are also fully supported and continue to work with 10.11 and upcoming OS versions. There has been some confusion generated by Apple no longer supporting their own FireWire Core Audio driver, causing some well-known audio interfaces which relied on this driver to be no longer supported from 10.11. on. RME is not affected by Apple's decision as RME develops their own drivers for all devices, and FireWire as such is and will stay supported from the operating system in the foreseeable future.

I've been working with El Capitan since it was in beta with no issues with any audio programs that I've been running. This is on a 2014 iMac and a 2013 MacBook. Also used it on a 2011 iMac and 2015 iMac at work (Network Administration for a marine research facility) and have had no issues there either.

Not sure what problems others are actually seeing. I just hear a lot of "it doesn't work", but no details.

Pete

I just installed El Capitan 10.11.6 on an external hard drive (main internal drive and programs safely out of reach!) to test if there was any progress.

Sampletank 3 (which is 64 Bit only) still refuses to load within the FTP host software.

Pete, if you're using the included synth/sampler software that comes with FTP, you're ok.
Neither ST3 nor Amplitube 4 (both 64 Bit) will work within the FTP host, although they work stand-alone.

That's the problem with upgrading.

It appears new Mac users (with El Capitan pre-installed) are going to be unable to use certain applications and hardware unless they can get ahold of Yosemite.  I will continue to use Yosemite, however I have had to purchase JBridge in order to use ST3 within FTP. So far, it's working.

In 10 weeks El Capitan will be replaced by OSX 10.12 Sierra - and that will bring a whole new layer of incompatibility, and 3-6 months wait for a fix.

To remain productive with Audio / MIDI Creation tools on a Mac, It's been tradition for past 3 years that right around the time Apple starts installing   a new version of OSX (every October) is the only time to consider using the prior stale version , as that's around the time bugs are worked out because it can take 9 months for third party developers to address compatibility.

Witness today (late  August 2016) and OSX El Capitan remains unusable for my needs.

Remember Steve Jobs is dead and Musician's creation tools have become lowest priority today at Apple - (even after hiring Jimmy Iovine and Dr Dre last year)

IMHO , if you prefer being non productive in Media creation and waiting week after week for new working USB drivers for your Roland /Boss / Line-6 gear or patch for your FTP system - buy a brand new Mac in October.
Or sell all your Roland /Boss gear and only use RME Audio interface with Logic-X - and not much else

My next computer won't be a Mac, but something created around a Thunderbolt equipped main board. My Mac interest disappeared with soldered RAM, non-standard PCIE SSDs and glued on iMac screens.
To V or not to V: That is the question.

Agreed.

There are some great Asus Motherboards and PICI-e cards today with Thunderbolt

and MOTU and RME now provide Thunderbolt Audio Drivers for Windows.

Its my hope that by 2018, Linux Music creation tools   gain momentum and USB-C native Audio interfaces arrive
