Hi guys, I just joined the forum & saw this introduction page. Firstly, thanks heaps for all the info you've all put up here, it's been a massive help to me & probably a lot of other non-members! I basically thought, I've been stalking your posts for so long I may as well join to say thanks!!

Anyhoo, I've been playing for about 20 years, mainly metal on either guitar or bass & for the past 7 years I've been playing covers (and actually making some money!!). Back when the VG-88 was new I borrowed one from a local guitar store & thought it was awesome, but I didn't have the spare cash & it wasn't exactly flawless. Since then I've just watched what's been happening with new products & thought I'd get something eventually.

Then last year I got a gig playing in a new cover band where I had to play keys on half the songs & quickly realized I'm pretty rough on keys so I got a GR55, mostly cause it was the current flagship Roland product & the FTP seemed too complicated to setup for live use. There's a lot I like about the GR55 but, as you all know, it could be better, so I'm currently in 'research mode' looking for another setup. Leaning towards a Line 6 Sonic Port VX & ipad Air 2 running Bias FX & something like Korg iM1 with KMI SoftStep 2... & either Jam Origins Midi Guitar 2 or FTP, depending on how MG2 fits my needs.

Thanks for adding me to the group, I'll try not to post too many noob questions :)

You are welcome - as you know there is a lot of exclusive content located only here at VGuitarforums that only "members" can gain access too.

Welcome Mykel,
I can attest that using an iPad Air2 128 can change your perspective about the possible vs. impossible or perhaps better said, the relatively inexpensive & painless vs. the expensive & difficult.
I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong. - Richard P. Feynman

Thanks guys! I'm keen to get things rolling, just taking care of a few unexpected bills first... I also realized programming patches on an ipad will probably be actual fun, compared to the chore of programming on the GR55. I did download Gumtown's GR55 app but haven't really look at it.

Thanks Chumly, I was a bit unsure about an ipad's stability for live use but so many people are happily using them. Looking forward to what my band are calling "the rig of the future".

You might be thinking of Marc Benigni's TouchOSC GR-55 Editor that made a lot of press back in 2011

http://createdigitalmusic.com/2011/09/rolands-gr-55-guitar-synth-powers-unlocked-with-touchosc-and-ipad/

Unfortunately its coded using OSC (Open Sound Control) using TouchOSC running on an iPad, and relies on the discontinued
Jabrudian "Missing link" wireless OSC to MIDI translator hardware box.

IMHO - With some effort someone could resurrect this with hardware available today using

IOS MIDI Designer
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=7156.0

or the latest IOS TouchOSC

or TB MIDi Stuff
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=5798.0

and a
Quiccosound mi.1 Bluetooth MIDI interface
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=11231.0

and use straight MIDI commands to communicate with the GR-55 . But so far nobody has committed the effort to duplicate what Marc accomplished using OSC
