Re: Quicco

QuoteNow it's very dead
I suspect I must seek an RMA with Quicco Sound USA

@Elantric:  Did you resolve the firmware update problem with your Quicco?

Elantric

No

Only solution was

1 ) order another Quicco Sound at Amazon - and return the 1st one

2) Avoid the prompts to perform a firmware update!

I successfully connected the  QuiccoSound mi.1 Bluetooth Wireless MIDI adapter to control Antares ATG-1 using iPad with MIDI Designer - very efficient!

Being a Japanese product, in limited numbers  - There is much confusion on the operation of the  QuiccoSound mi.1 Bluetooth Wireless MIDI adapters.

Today I've been playing with two QuiccoSound mi.1 Bluetooth Wireless MIDI adapters.

#1 QuiccoSound mi.1  with firmware 1.01 (original "as shipped" fresh out of the box)

#2 QuiccoSound mi.1 with firmware V2.0.0  update

I did the firmware V2.0.0  update on my 1st owned QuiccoSound mi.1 last February, yet it appeared not to work after the V2 update

But then I read on an Amazon Review that QuiccoSound mi.1 with firmware V2.0.0 can be seen in IOS Garageband  - and I tested this today and its true! The stumbling block was I assumed I had to use the IOS Settings, Bluetooth connections and first "pair" the QuiccoSound mi.1 with firmware V2.0.0 to my Ipad - but thats not the case.

The QuiccoSound mi.1 with firmware V2.0.0 use procedure is this :

1) Connect QuiccoSound mi.1 with firmware V2.0.0 to your external MIDI hardware device

2 ) Power on the external MIDI hardware device

3) See the "blinking Status LED" on QuiccoSound mi.1 V2.0.0

4 ) Launch IOS Garageband, and click on the Wrench in the upper right corner, and scroll down to the BlueTooth MIDI Devices, select the mi.1 and it works for MIDI Keyboards

But my goal is using iPad running MIDI Designer to remote wireless control the Antares ATG-1  - but while MIDI Designer does locate the mi.1 as a BlueTooth MIDI Device - I only get a one way MIDI communication path from  ATG-1 which transmits MIDI Active Sense messages, but does not receive.

So for using  iPad running MIDI Designer to remote wireless control the Antares ATG-1 do the following

The QuiccoSound mi.1 with firmware 1.0.1 use procedure is this :
1) Connect QuiccoSound mi.1 with firmware 1.0.1 to  Antares ATG-1

2 ) Power on the  Antares ATG-1

3) See the "blinking Status LED" on QuiccoSound mi.1

4) On Ipad launch mi.1 Connect app, and click "Connect" - will show the  mi.1 as connected in the center of the screen.

5) On iPad, doubletap the Home Button, to put the "mi.1 Connect app" in the background, and then launch MIDI Designer, and select the Antares ATG-1 Control Template. and All runs great  - Ipad wireless control of ATG-1

Just be sure when connecting to iPad using the QuiccoSound m1.1 Connect IOS app , to avoid performing the Firmware update on the mi.1

There was some doubt in an older thread that the GR-55 might not have sufficient power at the MIDI port for the Quicco mi.1.  I can confirm that the Quicco mi.1 does work with the GR-55 and Setlist Maker in much the same way Elantric has outlined above.  For the sake of completeness here are the detailed steps:

QuiccoSound mi.1 with firmware 1.0.1 and the GR-55
1) Connect QuiccoSound mi.1 with firmware 1.0.1 to  the GR-55.  The piece of the mi.1 with the LED goes to MIDI OUT on the GR-55.

2 ) Power on the  GR-55

3) Observe the "blinking Status LED" on QuiccoSound mi.1

4) On Ipad launch mi.1  Connect app, and click "Connect" - will show the  mi.1 as connected in the center of the screen.

On iPad, doubletap the Home Button, to put the "mi.1 Connect app" in the background, and then launch Setlist Maker.

Setlist Maker will now change patches on the GR-55 wirelessly.

If you're using a MIDI foot controller (e.g. the FC-300) you can still use the Quicco mi.1 in the same way by using a MIDI solutions Quadra merge:

Not much advantage here: Just no need for the USB MIDI cable nor the lightning /USB adapter (CCK).

If only the Quicco had a merge port on one leg!

Just a warning that IOS 9 "breaks" the QuiccoSound mi.1  Connect application, and makes it impossible to use  QuiccoSound mi.1  on anything other that Apple Garageband

(stay tuned)

whippinpost91850

Thanks for the warning....I'm still holding off on updating. I'll not make the update mistake again

Elantric

I'm still using IOS 8.4.5 and that is working well for me

My 1st generation Mi.1 works great, on IOS 9.2 -  but if the mi.1 firmware is upgraded to "V2" it breaks, then it can only be used with Apple GarageBand.

Annoying.

I gave Thomas Nordegg my working 1st generation mi.1 I purchased in August 2015

And ordered a new Quiccosound mi.1 (Jan. 25,  2016) but there are reports all new mi.1 interfaces arrive with the new V2 firmware pre-installed , which needs to be checked.

There is a 10 day return policy at Amazon.
I'll report more later this week as my new mi.1 arrives tomorrow.

In Garageband, make sure to turn on "Run in Background" or else it won't even show Bluetooth MIDI Devices as an option.

2016  Quiccosound mi.1  is working for all my IOS MIDI apps
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=11231.msg122833#msg122833

I only used GarageBand as a verification that the  Quiccosound mi.1 was available as a MIDI over Bluetooth device

But Garageband is not required to be running.

I close all IOS apps,  and then launch MIDI Designer (version 1.7.2), and

* Under Hardware and Virtual Sources, the message "Bluetooth",indicates the   Quiccosound mi.1 is connected as a MIDI Input Device.

* Under Hardware and Virtual Destinations, the message "Bluetooth" indicates the  Quiccosound mi.1 is connected as a MIDI Output device.

Steve, back in October you advised that:

. . .   FWIW - IOS 9 broke the Quiccosound version 1.01 firmware , and the Japanese support does not respond . . .

Since then there are reports on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/forum/-/Tx31FTXIKYVJ2OD/-/ref=ask_dp_lsw_al_hza?asin=B00PEFOOFI) that it's working well with IOS9.  Have you tried it again since October?

I got an email. I ordered from their original crowdfunding campaign. You have to update via their player piano app (really).

Understood. I want to use it with my Mac, anyway. If your new ones won't connect to the old Quicco iOS app, then they must be v2+. Perhaps if you update the old ones you updated to v2, they will start working with iOS again. You have to use Quicco's Piano Jukebox app to do the update.

My original Quiccosound mi.1  - I updated firmware to V2 - back in May, 2015.

It only connects to Garageband

My understanding was that the older Quicco responds to the same Bluetooth MIDI protocol as OSX/iOS, and that precedes iOS 9.2 by a few versions...

While this new 2016 Quiccosound mi.1 (FW V2.2.1 ) connects all IOS apps that implement the latest IOS 9.2 MIDi Bluetooth protocol, and older interim MIDI over Bluetooth implementations

https://developer.apple.com/bluetooth/Apple-Bluetooth-Low-Energy-MIDI-Specification.pdf

https://www.midi.org/specifications
Bluetooth LE (also called Bluetooth SMART) is a new wireless connection specification supported by iOS and some Android devices. The MMA  formed a Working Group to evaluate Bluetooth LE MIDI performance (latency and jitter) and wrote a specification for MIDI over Bluetooth which will enable products from different manufacturers to interoperate.

BLUETOOTH LE MIDI
MIDI over Bluetooth Low Energy (LE)

Apple introduced support for MIDI over Bluetooth Low Energy in iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 in the summer of 2014 and added features in 2015. A number of products have already been introduced for sale supporting Apple's protocol. The following specification from MMA adopts Apple's implementation as of June 2015 in order to avoid market fragmentation and allow adoption of a BLE MIDI industry standard by MMA member companies.

I'm just suggesting you have nothing to lose by upgrading your older Quiccos to the latest version if the new ones work the way you need them to. If you want, I could try mine as a test: what would I need to attempt? Connect to the ATG?
