I figure this is a reaction from the global customer service reports of difficulties with Boss Tone studio and Adobe AIR, and Microsoft's agenda to promote  / give OS preference their own tools (MS Silverlight vs Adobe AIR)

I know a few small companies that went bankrupt simply attempting to maintain support for their GUI Editors. Its a major cost burden.

But I wonder if Roland Customer Service ever followed my Boss Tone Studio Installation guide ?

Followed the order that you mentioned, elantric, but no luck with bts for gp-10.  Out of many bts installs, this is first time I had a problem

Tried that too, but still gets an error.  Uninstalled GP-10 driver, cleaned registry with ccleaner, installed gp-10 driver, installed air, tried to install bts, but still threw out an error.  No other roland/boss drivers installed except gp-10.

Are you trying to install BTS on  Windows 10 Creator update?

All Boss Tone Studio for Windows download links have been removed while Roland /Boss sort out why recent MS Windows update/Adobe AIR updates present a conflict for the BTS Installer

If you already have BTS installed ,please DO NOT REMOVE IT .

I might take a few months for Roland/Boss to deliver a fix

Meanwhile ,use Gumtown's Floorboard Editor for your device (Katana,GP-10,GT-100,GT-001)

To all those having problems installing tone studio. Install Adobe AIR, then Set your date back (a year will do) and then run the Boss Tone Studio installer - this will get it installed and then you can change the date back to the correct date - All Good!
I believe it is probably something like a code signing certificate has expired (or similar) - changing the date gets around whatever check it is performing during the install. Enjoy!

Sorry Steve but that is utter nonsense.  I know first hand that no such agenda exists - particularly not for Silverlight LOL.

I know a few small companies that went bankrupt simply attempting to maintain support for their GUI Editors. Its a major cost burden.

I can't imagine why.  I've written tons of MIDI software for Windows over the years and only one program ever needed to be fixed with a Windows upgrade and it was a stupid bug in my code.

I do know first hand the crazy stuff that developers do - shortcuts, hacks, etc.  I used to be the development manager on the base OS team that had a good chunk of the app compat work.  We used to encounter 3rd party code that would reach into the stack of a previous call they made to an OS function to grab some local variable - so literally recompiling the code with a different compiler and/or adding another local variable would break the app.  Or 3rd party code that would depend on some random register value that was set to something they thought was interesting - again, just recompiling with a new compiler or altering the implementation in some way would break them.

Or code that passes uninitialized or improperly initialized variables - it can be flags, buffer sizes, memory references, you name it.  So their code would only work if it ran precisely in some pattern and often stuff like this would unwittingly work because the stack used to be zero'd because of the previous implementation or location of some OS function.  So if we rebased a DLL or recompiled or changed the implementation or added stack validation their code breaks.  Switching to address space randomization in Vista broke a bunch of apps that had code that used to get lucky and work.

The Windows driver model has evolved to the point where if a company won't at least recompile and test, they may be broken.  It's really rare that a properly written and signed driver is broken by the OS.  And this is an area where Roland is consistently stupid.  They insist on not supporting standards for their hardware - it doesn't just break on Windows, I've had a nightmare time getting their stuff working on my Macbook Pro as well.  And of course it doesn't work with any other USB MIDI devices.  I don't get it because it is way more work for them and it results in a very poor customer experience.

And Microsoft does have an agenda
http://www.zdnet.com/article/google-chrome-wont-be-allowed-on-windows-10-s/
and ask any Fender G-DEC/Mustang Gen 1 user about Fender Fuse Editor which refuses to run because of the required  buggy MS Silverlight )

Regardless - its been 2 weeks and still Roland/Boss has no solution to the stale SSL Certificate that prevents the Boss Tone Studio for Windows installer from working.

And (based on past experience) I expect another 6 weeks before Roland/Boss post a solution.

So we have a workaround

Seriously?

  • Media Vision was defunct before there was even a viable version of 32-bit Windows.  They've been gone for 22 years!
  • Aureal went under because of legal costs fighting the Sound Blaster folks.  They've been gone for 17 years!
  • Echo Audio - I don't really know what happened to them.  There stuff always supported the latest OS no problem and seldom actually required an update to work. I still have an Echo Mia and it worked fine on Windows 8 - I haven't turned the computer on in a few years so I haven't put Win10 on it.  I moved on to an RME Fireface years ago so I never kept up.  In any case, I seriously doubt they went into OEM licensing because of difficulties maintaining drivers given how good their driver support tended to be.
  • Turtle Beach got their butt kicked buy Creative Labs.  They even conceded that and started making some daughterboards for the Soundblaster at one point - I had one of their boards. Most of their stuff was consumer or on the low-end of Proaudio market.  They eventually stopped making most of those sound cards when people stopped buying sound cards (basically when motherboards started shipping with audio hardware that met the needs of most consumers and gamers).  If Windows were such a burden to them I find it funny that they chose to build their network audio streaming device with Windows CE - I had an AudioTron, it was pretty cool at the time.

This is just typical poor after-the-sale-support from Roland.  This isn't super difficult stuff, but they have a long tradition of dropping something on the market and then neglecting/abandoning it - in fact, it's worse now than ever.  You'd think that they'd take a cue from the competition but they seem content to just ignore what's going on in the market.

I cannot even find an older version much less a newer one of Tone Studio to try to set my clock back.  I was able to update my GT-100 and got the right drivers.  Does anyone have a version that could be sent?
Thanks.

I had some issues with my laptop and I had to reset it back to factory. I just installed all Roland WIN10 drivers from all the driver installation software I collected in the past except VG-99. Its driver will be installed automatically from internet the first time you plug it in. I remember VG-99 driver installation has been this way for a long time.

However, I like to collect all offline driver installation software in case the manufacturer no longer support it in the future (e.g., cannot find it from Roland support webpages anymore), or in case I want to install it manually/offline. How do I obtain a copy of VG-99 offline installation software, or create it myself from the installed driver files?

You can simply correct me that my thought is totally unnecessary, but please explain the reason.

Elantric

#69
AFAIK - there is no VG-99 USB driver for Windows 10 driver available for direct download anywhere
that's the (annoying) way Windows 10 works (Microsoft is responsible for distributing the VG-99 USB driver )

Which means lots of my audio gear is NOT  compatible with Windows 10

Download and READ the instructions here
https://www.roland.com/us/support/by_product/vg-99/updates_drivers/bdd82dca-92a2-4653-8d42-7888e33dee06/

OR
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=15832.0;attach=15970

---
Install the driver manually
Depending on the Internet connectivity, the driver may not be installed automatically.
If this is the case, follow the procedure below to install the driver.
1.   Turn on the power of VG-99 and connect it to the computer using a USB cable.
2.   Right-click the start button and then click "Device Manager".
3.   In the View menu, click "Devices by type".
4.   Click "Sound, video and game controllers" or "Other devices" to display the VG-99 device.
5.   When the VG-99 device appears, right-click it, and then select "Update Driver Software".
6.   Select "Search automatically for updated driver software".
Your PC starts searching for the driver, and the driver is installed automatically.
The installation is completed if the "Windows has successfully updated your driver software" message is displayed. Click "Close".

If the "System Settings Change" dialog box appears, click [Yes] to restart Windows.

Just found the folder in Windows/System32/DriverStore/FileRepository. In the folder your will see:

Files (Subfolder)
Readme (Subfolder)
RDID1067.CAT
RDIF1067.INF
rdif1067.PNF
README.htm
Uninstall.exe

If you click-open the README.htm file or use Notepad to open RDIF1067.INF you will see VG-99 descriptions in it.

Thanks sec6

Same phrase is heard every year

Im more annoyed apple thinks they must release a new OS each year. Just serves vanity and those who'se life revolves around bragging rights for owning the " latest greatest ", with resulting  orphaned 4 year old hardware left behind with no support.
