With the Harley Benton Drum n'Loop, the house brand of Musikhaus Thomann presents a Looper pedal, which also has a drum computer with 40 different drum patters on board and whose memory can process 50 minutes of recording material. The drum computer can be conveniently controlled via an additional foot switch, which is included in the delivery.

Looper pedals can not only be a useful extension in live use, but are also welcome partners in everyday practice to quickly and easily record material for practicing. And of course, a drum machine is a welcome support in this regard. We took a closer look at the Drum n'Loop pedal for you.

details
Design / Accessories:
The pedal is delivered in a smart box in which the pedal and the footswitch were stowed among each other. In addition, the manufacturer has supplied the device with detailed manuals in two languages, a cable to connect the footswitch, and a USB cable to communicate with a computer.

Built the drum n'loop pedal really like a tank and it makes a very stable impression. At the same time, with its 612 g, it also weighs more than other pedals of this size.

The Harley Benton Drum n'Loop Effect Pedal includes looper and drum computer in one unit.
Connections and power supply:
The power supply is connected to the front of the Drum n'Loop. In addition, here is the USB socket for the computer connection, an additional headphone jack and an Aux In, via which external signals can be fed, but are not recorded by the Looper. The right side houses the connection for the included footswitch and input jack for the guitar. Links go the signals, if desired, via two outputs in stereo out again, however, a separate division of the Drumcomputer- and instrument signal on the two jacks is not possible.

On the left side there are two jack sockets for the left and right output.

Controls and functions:
The two foot switches on the top take on two functions, depending on the situation. The left footswitch both the recording is activated and played, the right footswitch is provided for stopping and deleting.

The two push pots also do several things. The left-hand potentiometer handles the selection of the memory locations and the volume of the recorded loop. A short press on the potentiometer switches between these two menu items. On the other hand, if you hold down the potentiometer for a longer time, you can select whether the drum computer and the loop signal should work synchronized or not. More about this in the practical part.

On the top, in addition to the controls, the easy-to-read LC display catches the eye.

The right potentiometer works on the same principle and configures the settings of the drum computer. Here, with short click commands, you can choose between controlling the volume, selecting one of the forty drum patters and tempo. Holding for longer also starts or stops the groove.

The center-placed display informs about all settings and setting changes.

The supplied footswitch controls functions such as Intro, Fill in or Outro, ...

The supplied additional control unit can precede the groove with an intro introductory one of the two footswitches and initiate an outro to end the groove. The second footswitch also has a fill-in function to provide variety.

practice
Before you start recording with the drum n'Loop, it is important that you choose the mode that best suits your recording situation. If you want to work independently of a rhythmic grid and set the start and end point of the recording yourself, the asynchronous mode must be activated, in which the sync logo is hidden in the display. Here, if desired, the drum computer can be activated separately, but not recorded.

This mode should therefore be active for a "classic" loop recording. Otherwise, you'll be surprised by the immediately starting drum machine, which might not be fun on stage, for example. So look up to the recording mode!

Otherwise, as indicated in the manual, the display will be green during recording and red when the recording is played. Since the color red is commonly associated with an initiated recording mode, this circumstance seems somewhat irritating to me.

At the beginning of the practical test, I first want to hear how the signal fidelity of the pedal is ordered. For this, I turn up the first channel of my tube amp properly and generate a crunch sound, in which sound differences can be good. We first hear the signal of my guitar, played directly into the amp. Then I switch the pedal in between and play the same chord material again. Finally we listen to the recording.

With a small change in the sound in the signal path, the user has to live. Thus, the drum n'Loop pedal provides for more brilliance and sharpness in the upper frequency spectrum compared to the direct amp signal and also acts a little slimmer. Fortunately, the played recording of the pedal no longer shows audible changes for me. In my opinion, the difference in sound produced by the pedal in the signal path should in most cases not be a problem in practice.

The Looper makes a good sound sound, and 40 varied grooves with various drum kits invite you to jam.

Now I want to hear how the pedal deals with several overdubs and other effects and put it at the end of my pedalboard.

As you can hear in the following example, our subject does a good job here as well.

Nevertheless, it should not go unmentioned that the pedal in the meantime for sound artifacts in the form of clicks made, but then disappeared after a few attempts as unexpected as they had surfaced and not repeated throughout the entire test period.

Let's put our ear on the drum computer function of the pedal. As already mentioned, the pedal has 40 varied grooves with various drum kits on board, which can be provided with the included foot switch additionally with different fill ins. Furthermore, the grooves each have an intro pattern to initiate and an outro pattern to complete the recording.

Sonically one should expect no miracles, nevertheless the drum computer fulfills its function quite solidly with practice employments. However, if you are looking for grooves in 3/4 time or in other crooked time signatures, you will not find what you are looking for here.

For a tonal impression, I recorded several audio samples with a selection of grooves and fill ins in stereo via both outputs.

The ability to start recording with an intro ensures a relaxed recording process. In addition to welcome variety in the accompaniment, the Intro / Outro / Fill option can also be a great help in the classroom to highlight or highlight individual parts of a song.

Finally, we hear a recording I made with the drum machine and an electric bass, with sync mode enabled. In addition, intro and outro function were used. After completing the first recording, I added an overdub.

If you want to practice undisturbed and as silent as possible on the way, the Drum n'Loop with its additional Aux In and headphone jack is a well-functioning solution.

The USB connection to the computer is made via software that can be downloaded from the Thomann product page for Mac and PC. After putting the device into update mode, the recorded material can be dragged from the device to the computer or loaded material can be loaded onto the looper. However, note that the device works with 24Bit / 48kHz. Although this format ensures a good resolution, but (apart from recordings for film productions) in the recording everyday is not necessarily standard.

onclusion (3.5 / 5)
The Harley Benton Drum n'Loop Pedal comes in an ultra-rugged case and is very easy to use with an additional footswitch. Sonically, the device looks pretty good and offers enough memory to carry recorded or externally transferred via USB material on the go. Somewhat irritating I found in the test model, the color of the display during the recording and playback process. In addition, the Looper generated in the meantime crackling sounds, which subsequently did not appear during the test. If this was not an isolated case for my copy, a rework would be desirable at this point. Apart from that, this reasonably priced pedal can definitely be a good partner in practice everyday at home and on the road.
