I have decided to finally make use of my SY-300 on my pedal board,
initially to replace my preamp pedal, then anything more is a bonus.
To mount it, I removed the 4 corner screws under, and use 4 longer screws to attach right through the pedal board.

While at it, I removed the whole cover plate and took a few snaps.
The internals are quite similar to the GR-55 and GT-100, with the same CPU/DSP.

I would have thought by now in a signal level device such as this, that there would not be much need for discrete semiconductors (I assume the little  metallic cans are transistors) but I guess there really is not very many of them as compared to those larger chips (which would contain umpteen millions of devices)...right / wrong?

It also is a crying shame that so much of the electronics manufacturing is no longer North American.

Actually those are Bulk Electrolytic capacitors  - for a clean power supply and decoupling AC audio signals - not going away anytime soon

The metallic cans are electrolytic capacitors.
I haven't seen transistors in metallic cans since early 70's although I still have a collection of them, generally of germanium or R.F. silicon type.

Here's one of mine - designed and built here in USA.

Since it's for digital cinema (I gather?) why the many text references to "auditorium" and why analog inputs / mic inputs? It seems like it's a multi-channel processor / RTA / D-A converter for movie houses?

Bingo
http://www.film-tech.com/warehouse/manuals/Jsd100Manual.pdf

this particular model utilizes both analog and digital formats.

Auditorium is just a more global term  - as these often go into museums or surround sound displays

Analog Mic ins are for calibration RTA room calibration
and some jurisdictions require an emergency paging system in case of fire, etc.

Analog "non-sync" inputs are for the venue to play music between showings

we have other boxes that do more 100% digital

To some, this might be what the inside of the SY-300 is like.
Circuit board tracks and components are like streets and houses..

+1. Using the knowledge freely shared on this and other simular forums, the muse finally payed me a visit. :-)

Great pics thanks - always interesting to see inside these lovely boxes :D

I design electronics that are then built in the UK or the US.
I can't show you them.
I can't tell you what they do.
I can tell you I work for GE Aviation Systems.
