(new math) Roland US / Roland JP = interesting !!!

Not that this would get them off the hook, but does anyone know if Roland JP was affected by the recent earthquake and/or radiation issues?

I emailed Roland and posted their reply here:

Q: What's the difference between a musician and a large pizza?
A:  A large pizza can feed a family of 4.

Not sure if this was mentioned but one thing I noticed is that I can't seem to make any Drum Kit based patches with the editor. And, if I make one on the GR itself and then load it into the editor, piano shows up in synth1 and 2.  Kennis, you must have noticed this too.  no?

With regard to the "GR-55 Midi Specification document" required, i have been talking to pretty much the top guy of Roland US, and i know he has contacted Roland Japan for the documentation, which i understand was going to be sent as soon as they could 'assemble' one.
The probelm i have is further contact with this chap has not yet seen any reply from my requests for a status update, or a reply to the download link for Roland people to try the software and hear any thoughts.
I know Roland are well aware of my software efforts of the past, as they have recently been directing customer enquiries to the software (GT-FxFloorBoard).
I don't know if they (the particular person i have dealt with) are just ignoring further communication until there is something to report from Roland, or if my emails are being spam filtered out before reaching the Roland rep.
If someone from Roland is reading this, i am trying to contact you but not getting any response.
Maybe some could forward my enquiry to some Roland US rep, stating that Colin (aka Gumtown) the writer of the GR-55 editor is trying to get hold of the GR-55 Midi specification document (and another issue we had an 'arrangement' on), and if someone from Roland could email me at gumtownbassman@yahoo.com  (my email address is actually built into the software too, so it's no secret)..

The next pending update will fix a few 'issues' which have come to light recently..
Fixed the PCM synth -0 numbers
Fixed the Bulk File reloading problem
Looking at Drum Kit editing issue - but i am not sure what the problem is without a description or example.

Colin,

I forwarded your message above to our contact at Roland US.

Colin,

I forwarded your message above to our contact at Roland US.
Still no reply, the silence is deafening  :P

That pending update is still coming, tidying up some typo's, fixed an issue with the dissappearing assign knob, and now working on changable colour scheme and styles.
Still working out something with the Mode changing, since both modes have a different amount of Assigns, I need to be able to convert the assignments on Mode change to be the same (more so those from the modeling onwards in the list).
I hope the selectable scheme/styles might fix an issue with the mac Snow Leopard combobox lists being 'strange'.
I hope to update by the end of the week..

Gumtown, if I hear anything from our contact at Roland US, I will let you know ASAP.
But there is still nothing to report, and my email requests remain unanswered.

A windows update posted - version alpha 20110502 -
with selectable style/colour schemes,
fixed some minor bugs as mentioned in the last few posts. :P
Hope to get the mac-osx and linux updates in the next day. :)

EDIT: And now the mac-osx and linux versions 20110502 have been posted

Download the latest version from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/grfloorboard/

looking for any comments from mac leopard users when using the selectable styles (particularly CDE and Motif styles).
There is also an option to use the Osx system standard Aqua look, but at this moment it does not provide control over font sizes for that style.

Hi

Tested on Imac & macbook pro with all settings ( Snow leopard 10.6.7)
Colours cary through all windows
Fonts only carry through on main window.
Sub windows ( ie panes ) fonts cary through on combo boxx main panel, but fonts larger in list & still go beyond the size of the list width.
Tried all combinations. Buttons change shape, text changes, but list fonts remain the same size.

It all works on the main display but not on sub windows.

The rest seems to work okay.

Can you tell me how to get the GR-55 to work in Ubuntu? audio and midi with jack?

I just noticed that the MFX limiter "release" parameter is mislabeled as "attack".

There is currently no Linux USB driver for the GR-55 (Roland don't do Linux) so you will need a Midi adapter to use the GR-55 Midi ports.
The closest would be the generic Roland midi device in the ALSA driver, some linux tweakers have managed to do the Boss GT-10 USB, so i should imagine the GR-55 would be simular.

Does this thing of beauty (Gumtowns editor) not work with either windows XP Home edition or vista 64 bit? I've been hoping to soon get it downloaded and start working with it and upon further investigation it seems I may be out of luck.

Gumtown's GR-55 Floorboard editor Works just fine on those operating systems

What gave you the impression it does not?

.

The noise suppressor, while visibly placed between the Amp and Mod block in the Floorboard editor, it is actually controlling the same noise suppressor available in the Mod block parameters.

Can you access the noise suppressor via the gr55??

gumtown

Yes in the MOD effect, scroll down the page list to the bottom on the GR-55.

The N.S. is graphically shown as a separate effect purely for simplicity and ease of a visual signal flow representation.
The Noise gate seems to gate the sound before the MOD effects, so it seemed the logical place to put it.

As for the editor progress, i have been quietly ironing out those annoying little bugs and quirks, currently fixing an issue with Assign 7 which has raised it's ugly head again from file saving.
And finally a first hand cursed moment after i spent a whole night creating some really cool tones, to find that they didn't save properly, mostly due to the problem noted above, which affected the file structure during the save cycle.

One more feature i want to add is to have the editor repeatedly/constantly aquire data from the GR-55, so that pedal movements and assign controls can be visually tracked.
Currently you have to repeatedly hit the "Temp" item on the patch tree to do that.

Thanks for keeping us updated, gumtown. :)

Sorry about the lack of feedback from me lately but I haven't had to use the editor for a while.  :-[

Blargh.  I still can't seem to wrap my head around the correct load/save sequence in this application, and I'm still losing work.   :(  Seems I'm the only one so instead of beating that horse...

gumtown, would it be possible to just add another warning prompt or two?  For instance, the application already prompts you before you overwrite a patch, but how about a pop-up for any actions that will load a different patch, thereby causing unsaved work to be lost?  I'm beginning to feel like too much an idiot to find this process intuitive  :) so maybe the best solution is to make it idiot proof with a couple of simple warning prompts?

midiman

I tend to use the write function on the GR-55 as I don't trust doing from within the application. A while back I created about 4 or 5 patches which seemed to save OK from within the app but when I powered down the unit and switched it back on again they were gone. That said there have been a number of updates since then so may be better now. Other then that I have found it an excellent tool for modifying patches on my GR-55. Cant wait until it is in Beta.  :)

Glad I'm not the only one.  Every time I think I've got my head wrapped around this, I get burned.  IMO it could be a lot simpler, but failing that, warning messages would be invaluable!

A page I visited that I thought was a download page didn't seem to mention XP. I could be wrong. I just found this page, http://download.gamblis.com/2011/03/01/gr-55-floorboard-20110301-simple-midi-editor/
and completed the download. Very cool. Many thanks for the brilliance of Gumtown.

I wouldn't trust downloding from any site except the project site.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/grfloorboard/

Many torrent and warez/hacker sites have pickup the software to distribute (without permission), and I don't know what they could have added to the package and many of them have very old versions, so the  site above is the only 'official' download site.
