As an owner of VG99 I am sure I have not explored it in full. By reading on this forum about SY300 and GP10 I have mixed feelings.
On one side it seems that SY300 does not pick up chords in full especially those with complex alterations, on the other side it looks like OSC in GP10 it's a mixed bag. I think all depends on the player..but how much of the OSC output can be used (with practice) to make lush pads? I know about GR55 but I am a little skeptical about it even if it might help.
What I need to do is play guitar and get pads in return, without changing my playing style. I have tried with MIDI and Hold 2 to eliminate false triggers but the results (for me) are good only when played slow. I love mixing two GR300 with dynamics with VG99 for Pad like sounds but I wonder if by getting another VG baby I can expand my sound palette. Lately I am also looking @ VG8,VG8-EX they come pretty cheap when you find them but I am scared by the absence of a GUI editor.

So, owners of the VG World in all its nuances, what's the verdict for you? What worked what not?

Best Regards
Paolo

Most get a GR-55, and live with the added latency of Guitar to PCM synth

But I say grab a VG-8EX - it has a few lush pad sounds and VIO Guitar not found elsewhere and near zero latency.

Thanks Elantric! I'll put that on the Radar! :-)

Is VG8 compatible with GK3 or runs only with GK2A?

Sure - just select GK2 or GK2A and adjust the GK String sensitivity (to taste)

Thanks. My Radar is On.
In Italy we have a special ebay like site dedicated to musicians that gathers info also from shops so as it shows up near my area I'll go there and test and possibly buy. So far I have found one with VG8 + S1 extension. According to posts here that is very close to have a VG8-EX minus bank E if my understanding is good. Moreover I guess the lush pads does not come in Roland Presets but you have to grab some from here or program yourself, right?

I would seek a VG-8EX

I had a VG-8 with S1 upgrade, its was "OK"  - but sonically I hear better Audio fidelity performance with the VG-8EX, and many stock roland presets have a lush pad sound.

But we have most VG-8 patches for both VG-8 and VG-8EX archived here

Thanks Elantric,

That makes the search harder but better to spend the bucks on good hardware!
Before the summer the shop where I buy most of my musical items, including VG99 had one.
It looked in good conditions, despite some scratches. Five months ago I didn't know anything about VG8 nor VG8-EX..
It was there, for 250 Euros. That is not going to happen another time.

Paolo: Lush pads?  My vote (predictably) is VG-99.  But 90% of the pads, textures, strings, polysynth and mellotron sounding things I do are not achieved using the synth models much - there's a few but a lot of is the processing of various guitar models with the polyphonic pitch transposer (I feel it is an instrument in itself) - sometimes these are using a synth model but you'd be surprised that many are not.

Examples:

Majestic high strings and pads:

Faux Electric Piano with warm strings:

Huge polysynth pad textures:

Eno-esque shimmers:

Triumphant strings:

Eno-esque mellotron-esque texture:

Guitar and faux Arp Strings:

Huge strings tuned CGDAEG with Fripp-esque solo guitar over the top:

Many of these patches have been uploaded to the patch libraries here.  But many times it's how you play the sounds that get you that magic result.  A lot of times I'll use the GK volume knob to swell into a note.  And I also use looping devices many times to construct pieces.  The first link in the post here was a looped improvisation.

Aliensporebomb that's magic you left me speechless. So much still to learn. I got a diamond in my hands but I can't see the light.
Thank you!

@Aliensporebomb:

Life it's a continuous discovery. Just loaded patch Pod Ethereal.
I discovered a usage of pitchshift FX that I didn't imagine. Only modding the fine setting you actually obtain a keyboard like 'harmonics' along with the original sound. That makes Pipe, Brass and surely others 'paddish'.

Great!
Thank you

Yep!  Many of my discoveries in these areas was using the time honored approach of "using it wrong".

That's how I came up with the ripping tapes sound which made me laugh the first time I heard it.  I have many more now of course.  Of course, I bet Roland didn't really think some of that stuff was possible but they were smart cookies when designing this unit!

If I think they have a VG1010 somewhere...
You're right! From now on I will use things the other way around!

Aliensporebomb's pads sold me on the VG-99.
