hello all i am a newb and made an intro post already in the appropriate place ;)

firstly i am going to spec my setup ..

roland gr-55
->
m-audio midisport 4x4
->
osx 10.7.4 & logic pro 9
->
(via midisport) rack of hardware synths

ok, so for some time when using guitar to midi on logic pro with my midisport, i would encounter a severe 4second latency if i switched on the gr-55 before booting up or opening logic pro..

9 times out of 10 this was solved by switching the gr-55 on *after* opening the project or logic pro..

the other times it would be solved by switching the input that the midi cable was on...

however, now neither of these solutions work !

... help !!!

muchas gracias mi nuevo amigos

also, there is no delay in logic transmitting the notes to the hardware synth, which is the first thing to go out of sync with an overloaded system... so it definatley is not this, at 0% cpu usage..

Seems likes lot of latency
Question?

What model and year Mac are you using?

How much RAM is in your Mac?

OSX Lion needs at least an extra gigabyte of RAM compared to prior OSX versions.

Hmmm...   I'm not a mac user.  Being a PC user, the first thing I usually check is driver updates to match the OS update.   M-Audio explicitly states they don't support that OS yet:
http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.faq&ID=9d129d4ca589fdd5bb848bcab37b50e3
HOWEVER...   Interesting the above note says it support the Midisport 4x4 "Anniversary edition" due to the native midi support of the OS...   And does not require a driver...  More on that here:
http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.faq&ID=86b0ee2afbf78aecc731133c55ef7d9a

So I guess my suggestion is to read these docs on the M-Audio site & confirm your driver (or lack of driver) is compatible...   Gross timing & latency issues are often driver probs...
Address the process rather than the outcome.  Then, the outcome becomes more likely.   - Fripp

wow, quick repliers here :)

i am using my own custom built hackintosh box as my mac mini was out of power, and apple would like £4000gbp for one this spec..

i am achieving full hardware recognition / acceleration on my machine and benchmarks and all other processes run great (including running projects unfrozen that previously maxed out the mac mini with almost all tracks frozen)

..this is still the case...

in short with 16gb of 1600mhz ram thats unlikely to be the issue...

i had to upgrade to 10.7.4 due to promises of a firewire audio fix for my mackie mixer which also uses native osx drivers...

following the 10.7.4 update i was not having this problem...

it is a recurring thing that, as i say, was happening before but would be sorted with a little fiddle ! - wether on the real apple mac, or the one i built in my bedroom ! and before the most recent lion fix, this was the case also...

if i could just do the same little trick to fix it again ... :s

also logic is recieving midi signals from other devices (electric drumkit, via midisport, keyboard, via usb) just fine..

What type hard drive?

I have heard reports of Logic 9 system hangs and delayed audio depending your drive type (Raid? SSD? )

Also not all "Hackintoshs" are as compatible as others. Some may work fine with normal OSX office apps - but problems can rear up on some of these systems when performing real time audio processing - and a few Hackintosh's fail at recreating the same low latency audio I/O experience as a real Apple product.

Suggest you ask this same question at the Logic 9 forums

blinkyspoogle

os etc. is running off ssd and audio / project on normal hdd

...

as stressed previously, i really doubt it is a system issue as my other computer did the same thing...

except up until now the previously stated methods worked to fix it...

blinkyspoogle

my other computer being genuine mac mini, i predicted this kind of response when i posted my system as being a hackintosh, hence me covering all the bases, now just being prompted to go back over them all again....

4 seconds latency  is crazy long.

blinkyspoogle

that'd be a mighty useful suggestion (again) if it wasn't *just* the GR-55 causing the issue (however, it is.)

... somehow, since all the other devices are working fine, i get the feeling someone on logic forums would point me in this direction?

blinkyspoogle

don't get upset with me because you failed to read my posts properly, almighty mod...

gumtown

Possible the GR-55 osx driver is having problems?
4 seconds seems like a very long delay  :o,
do you have any problems with the GR-55 freezing up while USB connected?  (USB controller power saver issues maybe)

I am running two hackintosh systems, both are very unpredicatable and unstable.

An alternative maybe to try another external midi/USB device instead of the GR-55 USB/midi
Free "GR-55 FloorBoard" editor software from https://sourceforge.net/projects/grfloorboard/

blinkyspoogle

both my hackintosh systems are perfect so i would be interested to discuss yours with you via PM - sometimes getting it right can mean sleeping/eating/shaving become more than a bit of a chore... !

i am not using the gr-55 usb cable, just the 5 pin midi cable, into my midi interface, which is recieving data from my electronic drumkit just fine, and logic is recieving usb midi data from my keyboard/controller just fine also...

i took your advice and went in search of an up to date GR-55 driver for 10.7 and did infact find this

http://www.roland.com/support/article/?q=downloads&p=GR-55&id=62151849

bingo!?

.. no :s

the driver installed fine, i rebooted, same issue.

....on the driver notes i noticed it added some info on 32-bit/64-bit compatibility

this got me thinking..

so i opened 'get info' and it turns out i was already booting into logic in 32 bit mode..

not sure how/why, but anyway, i figured change was what i needed, switched to 64bit mode, i think almost all audio units are now functioning via a new task called '32bit audio unit bridge'...

unfortunately this also did not yield success with my new-found troubleshooting woes... however, does anybody know if this is preferential to 32bit mode, for a high spec system?

-

i have just this instant switched from using a 5 pin midi cable for the gr-55, to use a usb cable instead, which works fine..

a bit annoying having the crappy gr-55 'audio interface' present, but nevermind at least i can get back to writing ;)

many thanks to those who have made helpful suggestions :)

Elantric

On modern systems 64 bit is where you want to be.
32 bit mode is only necessary when running older plugins.
Or for some other compatibility. Remember 32 bit mode can only access 4gb ram. Which can restrict the number of AU / VSTI plugins you may run.

cheers elantric, for a moment after posting i wondered if i might get told to ask that somewhere else ;)

My point about your "Hackintosh Latency problems" and solutions - is there are MANY other sites which can offer real solutions  - besides this forum.
I was only trying to be helpful

Try a search on "Hackintosh+audio+latency" and these are the results :
