at the top of the forum topics some of the subject lines are highlighted?   They have a darker background that the rest.  What's the significance?

can anybody tell me why?

I think you are talking about the "pinned" topics. They will stay at the top.

Some forums call them STICKIES or main subject matter for that section. Makes them readily available for quick reference. Those threads as stated will always be first where as the regular threads (non bold) will move down the list with age.
Gibson Les Paul Custom
Epi Les Paul Standard
Gibson SG 50's prototype
Squire classic vibe 60's
Epi LP Modern
Epi SG Custom
Martin acoustic

Princeton chorus 210

GT100
GR-55
Helix LT
Waza Air Headphones
Boomerang III

And, a lot of stuff I DON'T need

Dewittian

So who pins them and why would be helpful to know.  For example in this child forum there is a thread on 'why I returned my GR55 and went retro'.  I don't want to sound critical about anyone who has control of which threads are pinned or not pinned but if enyone could pin things then they would all be highlighted??

Only Moderators can "sticky a post - typically because these are considered top questions  / problems / issues encountered by most owners, and on any given month the same 12 questions are repeatedly asked, So those pined posts contain answers.
Most find these threads useful info to know, instead of getting buried on page 14 of the general discussion area.
Just because a thread has only 3 posts does not make it trivial and useless. We have a few threads here with dozens of posts that I would consider useless info.

Without stickies and moderation, this place turns to - well just another guitar forum.

and just because I'm the top poster here does not imply I have the  most knowledge-

and read our stats (Mid Jan, 2014)
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?action=stats

71,000 posts in 9,000 threads, by 11,000 members here - so having a few "stickied and pinned" to stay on page 1 proves valuable to many,

So if you never been here, and never used a similar vbullitin/pHp/SMF type forum this is the order to do things here:
