Same phrase is heard every year

Im more annoyed apple thinks they must release a new OS each year. Just serves vanity and those who'se life revolves around bragging rights for owning the " latest greatest ", with resulting  orphaned 4 year old hardware left behind with no support.

I own 2 MACs that are running an older OS, where as I run 3 - 10 year old laptops that are running Windows 10. :)

This morning my Sierra system popped up a very Microsoft like "you can update to High Sierra!  Click here to do it or click the other button for more information".   Watch out and pay attention or you could be having a major problem.  I hate it when OS vendors do this.  That USB functionality needs to keep working so...

QuoteSOLUTION TO WINDOWS 10 GIVING CONNECTION FAILURE ON BOSS TONE STUDIO AFTER SYSTEM UPDATE.
- make sure you're running the latest version of the software and firmware.
- Go to Privacy in Settings then App Permissions then Microphone and turn on microphone access and allow apps to access your microphone.

That solved it for me. Thanks so much to Shawn Hunt, Michael McCracken, Randy Pittman Sr (Facebook group), Elantric and the others who helped me.

side effect : user oriented pop up advertising in your browser

might get a ifixit teardown of your Win10 computer and clip the internal mic leads

QuoteI'm sorry this is happening for you. It happened for me on Windows AND Mac. The problem was, I was using a different firmware version and driver version. The driver I need was on the UK site, and the firmware was on the JAP site :')

You also need to disable some operating systems protections because Boss software team couldn't be arsed to digitally sign their software the correct way. On Windows you need to restart and press F8 (on most PCs) and pick the version that says something about "ignore digital signing bla bla). On Mac you restart, hold Command+R, go to Utilities, run Terminal, and type csrutil disable and then restart.

After these steps Boss Gt001-Gt100 works flawlessly.

BOSS TONE STUDIOS: CONNECTION FAILURE WINDOWS 10 UPDATE

For any device using BOSS TONE STUDIOS EDITOR and connected to a WINDOWS 10 computer system. If you've updated to WINDOWS Version 10.0.17134 Build 17134, you may receive a CONNECTION FAILURE message from BOSS TONE STUDIOS.
NOTE: Below is an example connecting BOSS TONE STUDIOS with KATANA AMP.

(See below)

If you've had a successful connection before the UPDATE then please check and change the MIC PRIVACY settings if necessary and set to ALLOW APPS TO ACCESS YOUR MICROPHONE: ON.
(See instructions and graphic below for adjusting MIC PRIVACY SETTINGS)

How to control which apps can use the microphone
Go to Start , then select Settings  > Privacy > Microphone.
Choose your preferred setting for Allow apps to access your microphone.
Under Choose which apps can access your microphone, turn on or off the individual settings for apps and services.
https://privacy.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10-camera-and-privacy

Once MIC PRIVACY has been changed, reconnect a USB 2.0 CABLE to the ROLAND BOSS device and to the WINDOWS 10 COMPUTER, restart the BOSS TONE STUDIOS Software Editor Application and choose the correct device first in the list and press OK, this should alleviate the CONNECTION FAILURE.

There is procedure to allow unsigned USB drivers to work with Windows10
https://ph.answers.acer.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/38288/~/windows-10%3A-disable-signed-driver-enforcement
Windows 10 enforces driver signatures by default. This can be disabled to install drivers that are not digitally signed. Use the following steps to disable driver signature enforcement.

Click the Start Start menu and select Settings.
Click Update and Security.
Click on Recovery.
Click Restart now under Advanced Startup.
Click Troubleshoot.
Click Advanced options.
Click Startup Settings.
Click on Restart.
On the Startup Settings screen press 7 or F7 to disable driver signature enforcement.
Your computer will restart and you will be able to install non-digitally signed drivers. If you restart your computer again the driver signature enforcement will be re-enabled.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF RECOVERY FOR TROUBLE IN INSTALLING THE WINDOWS 10 DRIVER
September 6, 2019
Date of information update: September 13, 2019
Thank you sincerely for using Roland products.

On September 5, 2019, we announced that the Windows 10 driver could not be installed correctly. Microsoft investigated this, and we have verified that the driver can now be installed correctly.
We apologize for the inconvenience this caused.

Follow the steps below to install the Windows 10 driver.
Make sure the computer you're using is connected to the Internet, then use a USB cable to connect the unit and the computer and turn on the power.
The driver is automatically downloaded from the Internet.
* Under normal conditions, the driver installation is completed in several minutes. It may take about 10 minutes depending on the Internet connectivity or if there are other drivers being installed for other devices.

Next, make sure the Windows 10 driver has been installed correctly.

In Windows, right-click the Start button and display the Device Manager.
In the window that appears, double-click "Sound, video and game controllers" to display a list of devices.
Check whether the connected unit is displayed in the device list.
If the unit is displayed, this means that the Windows 10 driver has been installed correctly.

If it does not appear in the list of devices, carry out the following procedure.
Check "Other devices" or "Unknown device" to find where the connected unit appears.
Right-click the connected unit, then click "Update driver."
When the window for choosing the driver search method appears, click "Search automatically for updated driver software."
A search for the driver starts, and the driver is installed automatically.
When the message "Windows has successfully updated your drivers." appears, click [Close].
The Windows 10 driver has been installed correctly.
* If the latest version of the driver is already installed, the message "The best drivers for your device are already installed." is displayed.
