The LG V20 in a handy display stand. Check out that front ticker screen!
The back of the device looks a lot like the LG G5.
You're looking at two cameras, a color sensor, a laser auto focus system, and a power button/fingerprint reader.
The back of the phone is aluminum, but the very bottom and top sections are plastic.
Let's look at some ticker screen options. Here's the "app shortcut" screen.
You can swipe over for power controls...
... or a text string...
... or music controls...
... or calendar events.
Press this special "eject" button on the side and...
... the back comes off!
You can then remove the battery.
There's also a combo SIM and MicroSD slot.
Volume keys are on the side.
Up top are a microphone and IR LED.
The bottom has a headphone jack and USB Type C port.

NEW YORK—Today LG took the wraps off its second flagship for 2016: the LG V20. The device is a sequel to last year's LG V10 and follows much of the same formula. The V20 is a high-end 5.7-inch smartphone with a secondary "ticker" screen just above the main screen.
The specs are about what you would expect for a 2016 flagship: a Snapdragon 820, 4GB of RAM, a 3200mAh battery, and a 5.7-inch, 2560x1440 IPS LCD. The V20's big eyecatcher is the always-on second screen, a small area above the main screen that can display a series of mini apps—power controls, app shortcuts, calendar events, music controls, or a text string.

LG G5 review: An interesting idea, shoddily executed
We weren't enamored by LG's earlier 2016 flagship, the LG G5. But LG has made great strides with the V20 and seems to have solved most of the issues we had with the previous flagship. The G5's modular system is no more, along with the build-quality problems that it caused. Gone are the uneven seams and sharp edges, while the V20 keeps the removable battery and MicroSD slot by going with a more traditional removable back plate design.
The V20 is one of the rare metal phones to do this, and it works very well. The trade-off is that you miss out on the aluminum unibody construction in order to make the back removable, but we didn't notice any ill effects from that design change. The device is again made out of aluminum, but instead of the aluminum-coated-in-plastic design of the LG G5, your hands are actually touching metal when you touch the back of the V20.

The mechanism to reattach the back worked well in the few minutes we got to play with it. A series of snap connectors encircle the perimeter of the phone, and once you've clicked everything together, the phone feels solid. Like the LG G5 opening, the V20 uses an "eject" button on the side instead of a fingernail slot to pop the back off.

A first look at the LG V20. Video produced by Jennifer Hahn.
The back of the V20 is similar to the LG G5. The rear of the phone has a main camera—a 16MP sensor with a 75-degree field of view—and a secondary "wide angle" camera—an 8MP sensor with a 135-degree field of view. For the front camera, the V20 tries the same trick with a single lens, switching between a 5MP 120-degree "wide mode" and a 5MP 83-degree "normal mode."

Returning to the back: on the left and right of the lenses are LG's usual color sensor and laser autofocus system. Below the camera is a physical power button with an integrated fingerprint sensor.

The LG V20 promises to have great audio with something LG is calling a "32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC," which LG says "delivers a crisp and clear sound that comes closest to a live performance when using compatible wired headphones" by "reducing up to 50 percent of ambient noise levels." Don't pay too much attention to the audiophile-grade branding: 16-bit audio is enough to accurately store everything in the human range of hearing. Just take the feature as LG saying it paid special attention to the audio output on the phone.

Both Google and LG tout the LG V20 as the "first new smartphone" to come with Android 7.0 Nougat. This is technically true, sure, but this is "Nougat" with heavy air quotes, since it has LG's skin slathered on top. Split screen has made it intact, along with Direct Reply from the notification panel. But things like the notification redesign have been paved over with LG's aesthetics.

In screenshots and our video you'll see a puzzling new Google icon called "In apps." We couldn't figure out what it was at the time of the video recording (and it didn't really work), but the next day Google announced "In Apps" as a new way to search through content from your apps. It ought to bring up things like contacts, messages, songs, notes, and any other apps that feel like plugging in to the system. On the V20 this has a special icon, but on most phones there should be a new "In Apps" tab on the right of the Google search results interface.

As usual, we asked about LG's participation in Google's monthly Android security update program. We were told security updates would be determined on a "per-carrier" basis. The pricing is up to carriers, too. LG wouldn't even give us a ballpark price for the V20, but we guess it'll be somewhere around the V10's $700 price tag.

The LG V20 will be available in Korea starting this month in dark gray, silver, and pink. It will be out sometime soon in the US whenever carriers get around to it.

LG TAKES THE MULTIMEDIA MOBILE EXPERIENCE TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH V20
Enhanced Features Include Steady Record 2.0, Front and Rear Wide Angle Cameras, Hi-Fi Quad DAC, Android Nougat OS

SEOUL, Sept. 7, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled the V20, the latest in its V series of smartphones, delivering the highest multimedia capabilities available in a mobile device. The V20 boasts new features including Steady Record 2.0, Hi-Fi Quad DAC, HD Audio Recorder and front and rear wide-angle lens cameras to deliver best-in-class performance. It is also the world's first smartphone to come preloaded with Android 7.0 Nougat OS and the new Google In Apps phone search function.

The LG V series is a premium flagship smartphone line designed to provide users with the best video and audio experience. LG looked at the customers of the V10 and examined what they wanted and needed and determined that the V20 should be developed with "storytellers" in mind – for anyone who has something to say, anyone who has an experience to share.

Delivering Share-worthy, Crisp, Clear Videos

Steady Record 2.0

The LG V20, powered by the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 820 processor with X12 LTE, introduces Steady Record 2.0, leveraging Qualcomm Technologies' electronic image stabilization (EIS) 3.0 to record sharper video footage while neutralizing shaky images. The gyro-based EIS improves sync accuracy between the image and the gyro by reducing sync latency to only 50 milliseconds. EIS is complemented by digital image stabilization (DIS) which further improves video quality in post-processing by adjusting objects across frames and minimizing distortion caused by rolling shutter for smoother action.

Hi-Fi Video Recording

LG V20 owners can record Hi-Fi videos and manually control the settings for perfect audio quality using options such as Low Cut Filter (LCF) that removes unwanted background noise and Limiter (LMT) that sets recording distance. The LCF reduces background noise while the LMT zeroes in on voices the user wants to record. The V20 also captures audio using 24-bit / 48 kHz Linear Pulse Code Modulation (LPCM), the same format used in professional video equipment.

The Purest Audio Experience

Hi-Fi Quad DAC

The V20 is the world's first smartphone to feature a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC, powered by ESS Technology, designers of high-performance audio products. Powered by ESS SABRE ES9218, the Quad DAC in the V20 delivers clearer sound by minimizing distortion and ambient noise by up to 50 percent. With 75-stage fine volume and L/R balance controls as well as support for lossless music formats including FLAC, DSD, AIFF and ALAC, the V20 delivers high-quality sound to any pair of earphones.

HD Audio Recorder

The HD Audio Recorder represents the next level of sound recording. This feature lets users capture studio quality audio with a wider dynamic frequency range using three high AOP microphones to record incredible sound that surpass audio recordings on conventional smartphones. With Studio Mode, manually control sound with easy-to-use keys similar to ones found in video cameras and use Music Recorded to create high quality audio suitable for auditions by recording singing voices over existing music.

In an effort to further enhance audio functions and design, LG continues its collaboration with B&O PLAY. The result in the LG V20 is a natural, balanced sound, reflecting B&O PLAY's acoustic engineering philosophy.1

Capture It All and More

Front/Rear Wide Angle Lens

The wide angle capabilities of the front and rear cameras capture photos with an inclusive background, meaning users get more in the frame and leave nothing out. The 5MP front camera with a 120-degree lens expands the selfie experience to take bigger pictures with even more friends. The 8MP rear camera with its 135-degree lens is perfect for taking pictures in front of a gorgeous vista or inside a gigantic stadium. The large aperture standard angle lens captures sharp images at a maximum of 16MP with its 75-degree lens.

Auto Shot

The Auto Shot Function on the front camera produces perfect selfies with its face detection feature, which triggers the shot when the subject is ready and smiling. There is no need to press the shutter button, which usually increases camera shake and the likelihood of a blurred shot.

Hybrid Auto Focus

The V20's Hybrid Auto Focus (HAF) ensures a sharp picture every time. A fast and stable auto focus is delivered in any environment by integrating three AF mechanisms – Laser Detection AF, Phase Detection AF and Contrast AF – for both videos and photos. The V20 determines if LDAF or PDAF is best for a particular shot and then refines the focus with Contrast AF. Users can take full advantage of the V20 when capturing sharp images of friends or family in action, in any lighting conditions.

Gives You More of What You Love

Second Screen

The popular Second Screen feature that was first introduced on the V10 has improved in visibility. With double the brightness and 50 percent larger font size compared to the V10, the smaller display located above the main display allows users to easily view notifications and alerts in outdoor situations at a glance.

Now with the Expandable Notifications feature, users can tap a button on the Second Screen to enlarge notifications in order to check long messages at a glance and quickly send a reply or share information.

LG UX 5.0+

The LG V20 comes with the mobile user interface LG UX 5.0+ to make it easier to use the multimedia functions tailored to customer needs. The LG UX 5.0+ is an upgraded version of the LG UX 5.0 first introduced on the LG G5. It is also the world's first smartphone interface to run on Android 7.0 Nougat.

The LG V20 also features Multi-window to display two apps at once in a split screen allowing users to drag text, images, and files from one app to another. The combination of these advancements together with the 5.7-inch main IPS Quantum Display offers the best in multitasking capabilities.2

In Apps

The LG V20 is the world's first phone to showcase Google's In Apps. The new search mode featured in the Google app, helps users find content not only from built-in apps including contacts, emails, text messages and photos, but also from user-installed apps. It also enables users to discover recently accessed apps, people to get in touch with, messages to read or activity across apps without having to type a query.

Premium Design in a Durable Body

Premium Materials

To achieve both a sophisticated look and solid durability, LG uses lightweight aluminum, together with a new silicon-based material. AL6013 metal, found in aircraft, sailboats and mountain bikes, was selected to cover the back of the phone due to its sturdy but light properties. If dropped, the top and bottom of the phone are protected from damage by Silicone Polycarbonate (Si-PC). This innovative material, found in helmets, reduces shocks by more than 20 percent compared to conventional materials.

Durability

The LG V20 has also passed the MIL-STD 810G Transit Drop Test for durability conducted by an independent laboratory that conforms to U.S. military standards. The test determined that the V20 could withstand shocks and still function when dropped repeatedly from a height of four feet and landing in various positions, including the front, back, sides and corners.

"The LG V20 is designed to offer customers a more dynamic experience by building on the most popular video and audio features of the V series," said Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics and Mobile Communications Company. "With the LG V20, we are giving our customers more of everything they love and less of anything they don't need to set a new standard for premium smartphones."

The LG V20 will be available in Korea starting this month followed by other regions. Information regarding other markets and launch dates will be announced locally in the weeks to come.

https://www.dpreview.com/news/0241785592/lg-v20-comes-with-dual-cam-and-stereo-sound-recording
LG has unveiled the V20, a smartphone with a focus on audiovisual performance that is also the first device to come with Google's Android 7.0 operating system. The latter brings with it the new multi-window mode, a new notification system, improvements to battery management and the in-app search application, which allows for content search from third-party apps. Thanks to LG's UX 5.0+ launcher the interface looks very similar to the LG G5's.

Also pretty much identical to the G5 is the V20's camera specification. Like its smaller cousin the new model uses a dual-camera setup. A 16MP sensor is combined with a fast F1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization in the main camera, which is joined by an 8MP/F2.4 unstabilized wide-angle module. There is also on-sensor phase detection and laser assistance for AF. In video mode the new device can record up to 4K resolution and comes with Qualcomm's new Steady Record 2.0 electronic image stabilization which optimizes synchronization between the image and the device's gyro. At the front there is a 5MP camera with F1.9 aperture.

In addition, thanks to a built-in 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC, the V20 can record high-quality stereo sound with its videos and eliminate background noise. Recorded images and video can be viewed on a 5.7" Quad HD display that, like on the predecessor V10, features a secondary small display for quick access to apps, notifications and quick settings.

The Android OS is powered by a Snapdragon 820 chipset and 4GB of RAM. 64GB of expandable storage are on board and the 3200 mAh battery is removable. It also supports Quick Charge 3.0 via a USB Type-C connector. All the components are wrapped up in a smooth-surfaced metal body. The LG V20 will first be released in Korea later this month but availability in other regions, including the US, should be announced soon.

A closer look at the LG V20's audio capabilities

The LG V20 is finally here and after much teasing about the handset's audio capabilities, we finally have the official details. As well as boasting some top notch playback capabilities, LG has bundled in a selection of new recording features, both hardware and software, that will be a boon for mobile media creators and consumers.

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn01.androidauthority.net%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2016%2F09%2Flg-v20-drop-test-7-1340x754.jpg&hash=44491f940d798ebc3cb238243e4f4c4e7bd8ce4b)

As we suspected, the LG V20 features the latest ES9218 DAC from ESS,
http://www.esstech.com/index.php/en/news/newsroom/ess-technology-brings-advanced-audiophile-features-mobile-devices-first-time/

which features a parallel sub-DAC configuration to improve noise performance and total harmonic distortion. The chip boasts theoretical maximums of 130SNR, 124dB DNR and -112dB THD+N, although real world performance may not quite reach these numbers.

The chip also features a dedicated headphone amp with a high 2Vrms output, which should help to reduce the effects of signal loss with headphones of different impedance. There's a 75 stage analog volume control and hardware left/right channel balancing controls too.

Is it better than the V10?
Compared with the quite superb sounding LV V10, the newer V20 DAC and amplifier's paper specifications are a very close match. The V10's ES9018 and 9602 amplifier combination offer an ever so slightly better dynamic range and lower distortion characteristics than the V20's ES9218. However, the ES9218's new Quad DAC design lends itself to a superior signal-to-noise ratio of 130dB versus 122dB. We should also note that the smartphones' circuit design and signal path will lower these theoretical maximum results, and in reality the two are likely to be incredibly close.
(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn01.androidauthority.net%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2016%2F09%2FLV-20-audio-spec-vs.png&hash=21d53b0c3283b7534ea765bf780acb5850ad3213)
LV 20 audio spec vs

According to LG, using DAC's in parallel inside the V20 decreases noise by by a value of "1 divided by the square root of 4" per channel. LG says this improves noise performance by 50 percent (6dB reduction in noise voltage), so we are likely looking at two parallel DACs per stereo channel, giving us a total of four.

September 5, 2016
Along with the lower noise performance of the ES9218 DAC, LG has implemented some special metal shielding over the DAC chip to help reduce noise interference from the internal processor and radio frequencies, which should help to preserve signal integrity. Clearly, a lot of attention has been paid to the audio circuit design to ensure a listening experience that will please picky audiophiles.

LG says that the V20 supports audio file formats with up to a 32-bit depth and 384kHz sample rates, or those in the DSD512 format. In reality, you won't find very many files that match these huge formats, plus it would be complete overkill. However, the LG V20 won't have any problems playing back lossless 24-bit FLAC or ALAC files and streaming CD quality music from services such as Tidal and Qobuz.

The LG V20 supports audio through both the 3.5mm jack and over the phone's USB Type-C connection. However, the Quad DAC is only used for the 3.5mm connection and the phone's speakers, as the USB Type-C connection or wireless equivalent only deals with digital data transmission to an external DAC or set of headphones. So, the sound quality of any USB Type-C or Bluetooth headphones will depend entirely on the quality of the DAC inside these separate accessories.

Improved recording capabilities
As well as improved playback capabilities, LG has packed in some new recording functionality and software that also aims to improve quality.

There are not two, but three High Acoustic Overload Point microphones inside to help prevent those terribly distorted sounding recordings that you typically end up with when recording in a concert or sporting event. LG says that the V20 can now handle deafening inputs up to 132dB, up from an already huge 120dB with the LG V10. The added benefit of using three mics is that this will also allow for pin point location recording.

The LG V20 features an HD Audio Recorder, that can output 24-bit/192kHz FLAC files. LG claims that this is capable of matching studio quality recordings, thanks to the use of a background noise filter, and a limiter to pick out sounds at a set recording distance. On the software side, there's a dedicated "Studio Mode" with a range of configurable options for music and instrumental recordings. LG has even thrown in a Music Recorder option that captures singing voices recorded over existing music. That said, I'm not sure that the handset going to offer performance that matches the best studio equipment, but it should be a step up for smartphone audio recording.

LG also offers lossless LPCM (24-bit, 48kHz) audio recording output for video, which matches the format used by professional camcorders. Again, making full use of this format depends on the quality of the recording hardware, but it's certainly a nice option to have.

Along with a new DAC and audio recording features, LG has once again teamed up with Bang & Olufsen to help fine tune the audio experience. There aren't any modular components this time around, instead it appears that B&O have been helping out with the circuit and speaker design. However, this partnership was only taken up by LG's Asian regional office. All other regions will receive a listening experience tuned by LG's own engineers. Unfortunately we don't know what, if any, effect this will have on audio quality.

Just like its last generation V10, LG has paid particular attention to the audio features of its new V20 smartphone, and that should help separate it from the competition. Whether you're looking for the best phone to play back your lossless audio collection on or planning to capture videos with the dual-rear camera setup, the LG V20 aims to have you completely covered on the audio front.

Taking The LG V20 Apart in 3mn20s (Video)
By Hubert Nguyen on 10/11/2016 15:18 PDT

I'm in Asia this week, it was a good time to stop by LG and meet the people behind the LG V20. We asked one of the LG Engineers working on this project to take a V20 apart to show us how it's built and what's inside.
We shot the video as he was doing it, so in the interest of time, we've accelerated some portions of it, especially at the beginning. The video does show some interesting things. First of all, the LG V20 seem to be very easy to take apart, although keep in mind he's probably the most competent person in the world to do it (lol).

My LG V20 phone is my "daily driver"

Recently updated to Android 8.0

Its 25% faster and now I can listen to youtube in the background.

I still prefer IOS for music making - but for general tasks and internet hotspot at home - love this V20 phone.

This was covered in HF, not sure if it was covered here in the previous posts, but regardless, here's a trick to get the V20 to stay in 'High Impedance' mode even when you're using a low impedance headphone (don't advise this for IEM's though). Here's a pic of my ATH -R70x (470 Ohm) headphone attached to my V20, it IS in 'High Impedance' mode naturally.
Use a 3.5mm to 6.3mm adapter (your 50 ohm or higher headphones MUST be attached) and plug them into the V20. The V20 will kick into 'High Impedance' mode, you can now detach the headphone from the adapter BUT leave the adapter connected to the V20 to keep it in 'High Impedance' mode. You can now attach a lower impedance can (like the K812 in the pic below which is only 32 Ohm) and the V20 will play music in 'High Impedance' mode.

Even if you have only the adapter w/o a high impedance headphone, you can still plug in the adapter to the V20 (don't connect the adapter to a headphone yet, leave the adapter unconnected). You'll note that the V20 goes into 'External Device' mode, you can now attach the headphone and it'll stay in 'External Device' mode. From what I've gathered, 'External Device' mode loudness is somewhere between 'High Impedance' and 'Normal Audio' mode.

for those looking for a method to expand LG V20, drive HDMI  or Display Port Monitors , add USB Host ports and have a power supply  - this adapter works at a good price

Microsoft Display Dock DOC MIC HD500 MIC950  with Power supply
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Retail-Packed-New-Inbox-Microsoft-Display-Dock-DOC-MIC-HD500-MIC950-BLACK/163629682089
Drive HDMI  or Display Port Monitors @ 1920 x 1080 Hi Def -

I use this to power the LG V20 Android 9 Smartphone, and  watch Youtube / Amazon Prime Videos in Hi Def on my TV

Also provides three USB 2.0 Host ports , allows connecting a USB Keyboard or USB Class Compliant Audio / MIDI devices

Had to dump the LG V20 - as it does not support VOIP on AT&T (aka Wifi calling)(mandatory after Feb 2022 )
https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/07/22/no-your-phone-is-not-going-to-stop-working-on-att-soon-heres-what-you-need-to-know/

Now use Samsung S10+  - which is working faster and better experience

I finally had to dump my LG V20 last year.  It was a worthy phone, and one of the last premium phones of note to contain a removable battery *and* a headphone jack.
