There is a nice graphic explanation why it doesn't work out of the box. Lol @ 4:21

As far as how much latency this will add, googling tells me worst case scenario is less than 2 ms and to expect microsecs instead of millisecs.

The Alesis IO Dock, a great piece of gear for the iPad musician, made even greater by addition of a USB hub.

Detailed step-by-step howto in my blog: http://wp.me/piKA8-jA

This is pretty incredible, actually. It looks a little tricky to do though. So far this is the only solution I am aware of that allows iPad charging while providing USB inputs with the iPad as the host. Impressive.

The IO dock only has 16 bit audio inputs, right? Does is sound good?

For a while 16 bit audio was all IOS allowed. I think IOS 5.1 changed that.
IO Dock gets the job done  - but other 24 bit systems will have lower noise.

But remember if you play in a band where cymbals are used by the drummer, I doubt you will hear the difference between 16 bit and 24 bit.

I view the iPad as a live show workhorse and demo recorder - The IO Dock Mic Pres can be noisy if used with the wrong mic. I'm more of a SM-57 guy, and view the whole cheap large diaphram condenser mics with noisy electronics as a fad.

Its a bit of a conundrum because my iPad 2 is the only one that still has the old 30 pin dock port. So Thats what I will use.
Bottom Line, I'm confident this will work with FTP

After I do the mod, I will also try the iPad Mini + Lightning to 30 pin adapter, to see if that could work too.

I'm already too far down another path to turn back and get an IO dock, and the outdated connector is also a concern, but this proves that it is possible to have USB ports AND charge the iPad at the same time which is HUGE if you ask me.

I'm really curious to see what NAMM brings this summer. Maybe Alesis will have an upgraded Lightning compatible IO dock or even add USB ports with no mods necessary? Will have to see!

This does raise a question though, I wonder if one of those dock extender cables can be hacked to provide power to the iPad in a similar way that this guy modified the IO dock? So the mod would be between the CCK and the iPad (I still have an iPad 3 for now with the 30 pin dock connector). Hmmm...

Read this thread for my latest iPad Guitar Interface(24bit I/O, full MIDI I/O, Battery powered for 6 hours use)

Use Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 + Fishman Tripleplay with iPad on Battery Power

But Today I'm only interested in 24 bit Audio Interfaces for IOS devices

Playing on with guitar on "10"  -you may not hear the difference between 16 bit and 24 bit.

The whole point in using a guitar with volume set to "3" , is the signal must now compete with the noise floor and hiss of the audio interface.

Also you must disable any Noise gates in your Guitar Amp sim software - remember my whole point for recommending 24 bit audio interfaces over 16 bit interfaces is not for recording - its for live iPad Guitar Amp simulation software - this is where you really need a 24 bit high SNR Audio interface, else you must use Noise gates all the time, and that ruins your dynamic range  - and you loose the ability to "roll the guitar volume down to clean up" a high gain Amp sim in Positive Grid BIAS (my main objective here)
