I bought a vg8 online from Guitar center. I'm not getting any sound from the unit. Is there a way to tell if the unit is functioning right, so as to determine if the guitar is working. I'm able to calibrate the strings,  so at least the vg8 is reading the signal on some level. I'm a total newby, therefore, I don't know squat about troubleshooting the system. I'm running an Ovation R869 into the VG8. Thanks, Buck

I suggest locate a GK-2A OR GK-3A Pickup and retry.

On VG-8, Its crucial to have a fully functional GK Volume control - and some custom installations omit this function, or if there is a problem with the guitar's built in GK-Volume control, you will get no sound

Thanks for the reply. I know someone did some work on the preamp because the wires inside the guitar were all over the place. I tied the wires with tiny cable ties and routed everything through the little clip. The tuner does not work at all. The guy who sold me the guitar said everything was working right and it was ready to go, however, upon opening up the back it was clear that was not so. I'm rather disappointed because I paid a bundle for the axe. I'm going to have to work on the guitar. The action is quite high above the 12th fret and that's where I like to operate. Usually Ovation necks are set up for easy action. I'll need to figure out how to lower the strings. I lowered the gk pickup after finding out that the high e string was sitting on the pickup above the 14th fret. The vg8 seems to be working. I'm not sure about the volume control on the guitar.

I would take Ovation R869 Roland Ready guitar to a repair shop that knows 13 pin gear

I recommend use this list here (RMC Pickup installers) because they also know Roland Gk systems too
to find the one closest to you.
