Has anyone put together a list of what the presets sound like (Like #250 = Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" (not that it does; that was just an example))? I'm having a hard time sorting through everything, and that would be hugely useful.

The VG-99 Factory patches are weak

Reviewing the attached VG-99 Factory Patch listing and the Preset Patch Names  - its all rather self explanatory to me

If you are looking for a specific artist / band - use these User created VG-99 patches instead

The Roland Germany Patches are Ok too.

Yes, this was also my wish for a long time that Roland would post a concrete band- and  (more important)  songlist for the patch that it's recommended for. But I think we still have to wait for some time.... ;)
The German Sound of the Heroes patchlist gives more information.
You will find the band's name and! the song it's used for.

Okay, perhaps we can come up with one in lieu of a list from Roland. I put together an open Google Docs file that anyone here can edit with the following link:

The second column is where you can add who or what song you think the patch sounds like. I put in a few obvious ones (e.g. 223, HOTEL CA is supposed to sound like the Eagles' "Hotel California"). It would be great to see what kind of community interest there is in putting together this document. Some patches are clearly gimmicky or blah, and probably don't sound like anyone (e.g. 344 Aurelius and 348 Spaced Out are pretty pointless); several are quite good.

If there is enough input, I'll put the final list together for a permanent file here.

Pingala, I have not tested everything but this comes very close to what I've been looking for . Thx very! much for posting this file. :)

This was what I suggested for the GR55 some time ago.

Would be great if you could create a similar file.

Only 181 to be filled... ;)
I think this should be an inviting  job for every member of our forum to participate and post his/her ideas.

Nice updates so far! I like the Joan Jett "I Love Rock n Roll" for BRUTAL BARI (if you turn off the detuning), and I *never* would have come up with Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey in the Jar Solo," but nice call, whoever did that one.

182 more to go!

I just updated 5 more:
365 Cream -- "Sunshine of Your Love" (Creamy LP+ES)
377 Def Leppard, "Hysteria" (HYSTERIA)
381 The Stooges -- "Search and Destroy" (SEARCH N' DESTROY)
388 Boston -- "More Than a Feeling" (MoreThanARockMan)
392 KC and the Sunshine Band -- "Get Down Tonight" (SunshineGang)

Some people seem to be critical of the presets; but if you find what they are modeled on, they are actually pretty close.

Keep them coming:

I always felt like "MoreThanARockMan" was not anything like a Boston guitar sound at all.  I owned a Rockman rack setup for years and used it as my main gigging processor in front of a JC-120.

I think a long term goal will be a patch duplicating that sound the right way.

I was a lot more critical of the patches at one time, they're just really crude versions of the sound they should be.  They could be used as "starting points" for some sounds - you can get really fine grained with the 99.
