So yes, I did do a Won't Get Fooled Again organ patch - and it didn't come out to bad. and I left it. and I thought about it. and I realised something.

It was only half a job - why I didn't bother putting a nasty, stinging 'old Brit git on COSM B I have no idea but I've done it now.

Pete Townshend used a Gretsch 5120 6120 - closest to my ears was the 335 plus old Marshall thangy.

EXP 2 controls guitar vol.

I took some real liberties playing the demo - pretty rough and the organ does a really good job of coping with stuff it really shouldn't. It's best to do a heavy palm mute and hard hit every so often to stop the slicer drifting out too much.

Patch only demo: https://soundcloud.com/smashmashups/wont-get-fooled-again-v2-vg99

Patch with full Who backing demo to show how it sits in the track: https://soundcloud.com/smashmashups/wontt-get-fooled-again-v2-vg99
I muted the patch before the fade to showexactly what it's adding.

And finally, this thing really is a helluva lot of fun to play (LOUD) with The Who backing so you can download the Who full backing track mp3 (it's the real thing - 7 minutes plus) from here http://www.mediafire.com/?408mc9gxlgbm82h Pete's guitar and organ track have been muted and I've left a ghost click to keep you in time during the (seemingly endless) organ break (organ buskers paradise) - love Moony shouting "Hey-hey!" at the end (definitely Mr Moon as it's on the drum track!)

Have fun with it - you'll be surprised what you can get away with!

To V or not to V: That is the question.

make that a '57 6120

Which is very very close to a current Brian Setzer model

Cor blimey - your eyes are going - that's what I said 6120 *ahem* *whistles*  ::) LOL  ;D

Sorry - yeah of course you're right - I looked it up at work earlier today and just remembered wrong (well that's my excuse - I couldn't even find out whether it was single or humbucker - hopeless!). TBH today was the first time I ever found out Pete used a Gretsch (I know that admission is going to have you shaking your head!)

Re: Patches - you guys are all very welcome. I will try and supply backing tracks wherever I can just because it really helps bring them alive and it's just damn fun!!

That's your Gretsch then? Looks gorgeous  :)

Yes, and thanks - too bad the Ferrari its sitting in is not mine, belongs to a Bass Player friend who invented the Earvanna Nut
Another bit of trivia is that Joe Walsh gifted the 6120 to Pete Townsend.

A Gift From Joe Walsh Makes History

Story by UEC

Did you know that Pete Townshend developed his "new" sound when buddy, Joe Walsh gave him a Gretsch 6120? Pete recorded both the incredible classics "Who's Next" and "Quadrophenia" records exclusively with his new Gretsch setup!
Excerpt from May/June 1972 Guitar Player

Pete Townshend PT: I never really got into old guitars until Joe Walsh (James Gang) rang me up one night and said, "I've got something for you," because we buy one another presents. He buys me old concert amps and I buy him synthesizers and we have become very good friends. Anyway, he said, "I've got something for you," and I said "What?" and he said, "A 1957 Gretsch."

GP: Chet Atkins type?

PT: Right, with real f-holes. I said, "Great, cheers, man," and it turned out to be a real knockout. I was being polite. I opened the case and it was bright orange and I thought, "Ugh! It's horrible, I hate it." I went home and went into my studio and plugged it in and it totally wrecked me out, it's the best guitar I've got now. It's the Chet Atkins model, with double pickups, f-holes and single cut-away.

GP: Doesn't it have a mellow sound, though; it doesn't "chunck", does it?

PT: Oh, I used that guitar on every track on Who's Next, it's the best guitar I've ever had. It's the finest guitar I've ever owned, it's the loudest guitar I've ever owned. It is so loud, man, it whips any pickup that I've ever come across. It's maybe six or seven times louder than anything I've come across. If I plugged it in my amp tonight, normally I'd be working on volume 6 or 7, but I would work this guitar on 1.
Here is Pete's setup

'57 Gretsch 6120 with Bigsby vibrato (gift from Joe Walsh)
Single cutaway 16?x 2.75? maple body
F-holes with black and white binding
    Rosewood fingerboard
    Brass nut
    Grover StaTite tuners
    Two Dynasonic pickups
Volume control for each pickup, master volume, tone and pickup selector switch
Gold pickguard, with Gretsch and Chet Atkins signpost in black (removed)
Nickel-plated Bigsby B-6 tailpiece with pivoting arm and compensated aluminum Bigsby bridge
Note: the '57 did not have the "G" brand on the body.

Joe also sold Jimmy Page his main '59 Les Paul too.

Quote"I'm really proud to be involved with the introduction of the new Les Paul Standard," says Joe Walsh, who not only developed his own distinctive voice on the instrument, but also sold Jimmy Page the 1959 Les Paul that became Page's #1 guitar. "Jimmy was having trouble finding a good Les Paul back then. I had two, so I sold him one of mine. He used that Les Paul on the bulk of his work with Led Zeppelin. Once you get used to a Les Paul it becomes your axe from then on. Les Pauls are like that. Once you find your personal Les Paul, that's it."

I bet those acts of generosity helped Joe's karma just a tad.

Sorry for hijacking the thread -

That's such a kick-ass patch I'm going to learn the song - it's SUPER FUN to play along even if I don't really know the song that well.

Question: how do I play the organ solo without having any electric guitar in there?  If I back off on pedal B all the way there is still guitar there.
I still need to figure out how to play the exact notes in the organ solo too, I need to figure that out.

Your distorted guitar patch really does sound like the record especially when the organ is going alongside the backing track, scary good!

Joe Walsh is good people.

Update:  I've learned 95% of the distorted power chord stuff but that organ solo I'm going to have to listen carefully and learn it line by line I think but man does it sound authentic.  Crazy good patch, just in time for my mid-life crisis!

It is great to hit that power A isn't it!

Not sure why Exp 2 isn't working for you - it's set up in control assign FC300 section as Mixer level B. You could try doing it in the Assign section and setting min value to something small like 5 and see if that cures it - that would indicate your pot on the pedal isn't giving a full sweep for some reason.

I'll tab the intro organ today but as for that long organ break at the end you're on your own! Welcome to Busking City Arizona - population 1!

***EDIT**** I've just rushed this tab out. TBH it's a compromise for playability as really in the repeating motif that starts at the end of the second stave should start with open g in it - starting shape would be 0-2-0-5 (so an a7 chord essentially) but it's really hard to do that whilst doing the 5-3-2-2 pattern. there's probably another way and I'm all ears!
