So a week or two ago I did a backup by doing the following:

Run librarian (V1.01) with VG-99 connected over USB.
Mode, Patch, Read, All (long wait)
Mode, System, Read, All
Mode, GK Setting, Read, All
Mode, Favorite Settings, Read, All
File, Export SMF..., All Data.

So last night I go to restore by trying the following:
File, Import SMF...

And I get nothing but a bunch of blank patches.

Where did I go wrong?

The manual says this on the subject; which makes me think I did the right thing:

To save all of the VG-99's patches as SMFs
This procedure reads the patches from the VG-99 into the Main window, then saves them as SMF format files.
Set "Mode:" to Patch.
Press the Read [All] button.
From the menu, select "File" -> "Export SMF" -> "All Data" (the data is read into the computer).

Losing the 5 or 6 patches I had made is no big deal, I just want to get this straight so I can save properly in the future.

You have to Export all data for each type and import for each type. Read this.https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php/topic,1071.0.html
