Survey of Working Audio Interfaces.
================================

While its true that both VG-99 and GR-55 include on-board USB Audio I/O interfaces, many folks find it useful to have a separate more robust dedicated Audio interface in your system.

The goal of this thread is to develop a list of Computer Audio Interfaces that our members use, and work well for real time low latency Amp simulators (Amplitube / GuitarRig, etc) that are working as "pop free" / low latency Audio Interfaces.

Please add a few comments and details with your Recommended (or Not Recommend) Audio Interface.
Since there are so many variables to obtain successful operation for modern guitarists and today's guitar applications please post your response in the format below:

Brand & Model :  (insert name of audio interface here)

additional info

I got this info from Rim (one of the programmers) over on the Auria forum. It works perfectly now! I've got output to my headphone amp and can overdub with very low latency (if any). Brilliant work on Auria's part.

It's not as elegant as using the 1818's headphone jack, but it'll do what I need it to do now. I'll be saying goodbye to my laptop and its fan noise for tracking.

Here's his fix:

The iPad will only output from 1&2 on a USB device. The reason why you're not hearing anything out of 1 & 2 is because the 1818 defaults to "volume off" on output 1&2. It's an easy fix -

1. Plug in the 1818 while Auria is running
2. Once you see the USB indicator on top of Auria's screen, turn up your iPad's hardware volume control (located on the side of your iPad). This control adjusts the 1818's 1&2 output volume.
3. This only needs to be done once, as the 1818 will remember this volume setting.

For those interested in Auria on iPad -Read this excellent article on using the Presonus 1818VSL with iPAD and Auria
http://www.macprovideo.com/hub/review-2/review-presonus-audiobox-1818-vsl-an-interface-for-ipad-and-mac-musicians (http://www.macprovideo.com/hub/review-2/review-presonus-audiobox-1818-vsl-an-interface-for-ipad-and-mac-musicians)
(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmacprovid.vo.llnwd.net%2Fo43%2Fhub%2Fmedia%2F1088%2F7758%2Fcp_545_Image_5.PNG&hash=625c2826b8465ea36abd7783b2ddb04bc7d8d129)
The latest version of Auria now have an output matrix, so all eighteen outputs of the 1818 can be accessed. This is not the case with other audio apps such as GarageBand or the Music app, whose stereo output does not get mirrored across all outputs, and can therefore only be monitored via outputs 1 and 2, and not the headphone jack. Note that at the time of writing it is a requirement that the 1818 is plugged into a powered USB hub, which is then plugged into the iPad via the Camera Connection Kit.

You should also be aware that the features offered by the VSL software are of course not available when working with an iPad. On the plus side, you can also use your iPad to run the free Presonus SL Remote app, with which you can remote control VSL software running on your Mac, over Wi-Fi.

DAW/VSTi/AU Software Instrument used: Logic, GarageBand, Cubase, Live (OSX) / JamUp Pro & GarageBand for iOS (iOS)

Comment: I really cannot say enough good things about this interface. It sounds excellent, the mixer software is very intuitive and easy on the eyes, it's pop and click free even at extremely low audio buffers. The February 2013 update enabled iOS support as well as OS X support, and it works just as flawlessly with iOS. This isn't cheap but if you're doing serious recording on Mac/iOS this is worth the expense.

Comment: We initially bought this as an inexpensive audio interface so my wife could start working on recording on her own iMac for singing and voiceover work but found that for the price it was a very decent and capable audio interface in its own right.  It also includes stereo guitar/line audio ins, stereo mic ins with 48 volt phantom power, insert inputs as well as MIDI IN and OUT jacks, plus stereo audio outputs and a headphone jack.  All for well under one hundred dollars.  Clear transparent sound without any pops, clicks or other audio blurriness.  It actually does a better job at capturing my Mesa Boogie/Lexicon/TC Electronic rig than the dedicated interface that was at least a thousand dollars when it was bought many a year ago.

Computer Type & OS: Dell Studio XPS 8100 - i7, 8GB.   Win7 64-bit

Computer Connection method: USB 2.0

Driver version: 1.0.0

DAW/VSTi/AU Software Instrument used: SONAR X2, Guitar Rig 3 & 4

Comment: Very compact, versatile & affordable.  The UA-101 is a 24-Bit/192 kHz 10-in/10-out.  8 ins & outs are 1/4" jacks.   2 of the ins & outs are optical.   The two front inputs accept either 1/4" or XLR.

It has a Hi-Z switch on one of its front inputs specifically for guitar input.   No issues with levels; very practical readout on the front.   Sounds GREAT with Guitar Rig 3 & 4, with no discernable latency.

Provides a very handy limiter switch on the front as well, if you have a hot or problematic source.

Decent software allows you to view all settings, & adjust buffers, etc.  Also provides a software "patch bay".   You can choose which inputs are monitored.

Status: RECOMMENDED

Computer Type & OS: Supermicro Intel Quad CPU @ 2.83GHz  & Win7 64

Computer Connection method: Firewire

Driver version: 5.10.0.5058

DAW/VSTi/AU Software Instrument used: Cubase 5, GuitarRig, Reason

Comment: Has worked flawlessly for the last 3 years. Huge range of input possibilities. I run the balanced stereo XLRs to channel inputs on the desk and transmit midi via the VG99 USB connection to the PC. I use the ProjectMix as the only audio device and turn off all windows system sounds. Because all the IO is done in the audio device itself, the latency is virtually non existent.

EDIT ** Added by request snapshot of buffer settings. Also probably should have mentioned 8G RAM and using ASIO driver

Interface: GR55 USB audio
Tested with: MacosX 10.6.8 on older white MacBook
Status: not really recommended, quirky, but fast.
Summary: very good for recording/monitoring at home, stage performance uncertain.

The GR55 can be very fast, it is the fastest interface I have (according to Kontakt 5)
I'd recommend it if there werent such problems:
-when the driver crashes (just might happen), you'll have to reboot your computer. thats really bad for a live situation.
-using usb tends to deteriorate performance of the GR55 (volume pedal, volume knob, S1,S2 react sluggish or not at all)
It seems to better when you switch "guitar midi" OFF in the gr-55 system. But then the GR55 will send no midi whatsoever, and that is a bloody shame, for then you cant use the volume and hold pedals, which would be so welcome using the Tripleplay.

Brand & Model :  Roland VG-99

Status: Recommended with Reservations

Computer Type & OS: Corei7 iMac with 16 gigs of 1333 mhz RAM and Mac OS v10.83

Computer Connection method: USB 2.0

Driver version: Claims 1.0.0 but is actually 1.0.2 by now since the version for Lion was 1.0.1.  Sloppy, very sloppy.

DAW/VSTi/AU Software Instrument used: Logic, Garageband, Mainstage, Riffworks T4, etc.

Comments;  Interface is fast, clean, quiet, low latency and works great for guitar-to-midi thru the USB ports.  Downside for some would be using this as a live performance interface in a live setting where you are attempting to switch patches as the sound will cut out.  To fix you could use the GR-55 method of having one patch with multiple permutations so the patch does not change during one piece of music, using a looper or perhaps using a parallel rig for a guitar sound that takes over for when the VG cuts out if you use this as a live sound interface.  The most practical solution is the one patch with multiple footswitchable permutations.

Instead, I use this as a studio tool where all audio apps are set to having the VG-99 as the audio in and using either the Macs built in output as the output or my other audio interface as the output.   For live, I use the audio outputs into a looper and into a mixing board.

Brand & Model :  RME Fireface UFX

Status: RECOMMENDED*

Computer Type & OS: Thinkpad W520 Win 7 64-bit

Computer Connection method: Firewire/USB 2.0

Driver version: 3.073

DAW/VSTi/AU Software Instrument used: Cakewalk Sonar X2, Pro Tools 10

Comment: Just purchased this (due to the RME reputation for better quality AD converters) and have only begun testing it (hence the * in status).  So far, playback and brief recording tests were flawless.  The driver installation under Windows was a bit different from what I'm used to, but went relatively painlessly nonetheless.  Right now, the firmware update tool will only work with the USB connection.  The SPDIF digital I/O is optical rather than the RCA type connectors; I previously plugged my POD HD into my MOTU via SPDIF, so I'll have to change this or find an adapter.

Hi All

The one vital piece of information that is missing in all of these reports is the Buffer size which is really crucial imho . . .
This also gives some idea of expected latencies, rather than simply say it is 'fast' or 'low latency', 'no discernable latency' etc
This all ends up a bit subjective for many, many reasons whilst hard figures give some actual factual basis for claims . . .
It may have 'no pops, crackles' etc at 512 and you may think it is low latency, but how does it handle 128, 64 or lower . . .
Just a thought . . . .

Computer Type & OS: Apple Macbook Pro, Intel Core i7 2.3 Quadcore, 8 gig RAM, Mountain Lion 10.8.3

Computer Connection method: Firewire 9-6 M/M adaptor cable - Firewire to Thunderbolt adaptor

Driver version: 3.0.0 f3637

DAW/VSTi/AU Software Instrument used: Garageband

Comment: Works well with 'low latency' setting, no pops, clicks, or crackles. Requires use of additional power adaptor (included).
The old version of this driver had options for buffer sizes of 64, 128, 256, 512, etc.. but the new driver simply states "low latency" or "regular" and other simple descriptions as options. I don't even know the numerical buffer sizes now.

Also had great results with about 6 milliseconds latency when using with PC Windows XP Professional SP2 and SP3, Gigabyte 2.4 Quadcore, 4 Gig RAM into Cubase 5 with earlier version 2.5 driver via Firewire and did not require power adaptor. M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 is also recommended with this PC setup

Had poor results with Presonus Firebox and Echo Layla.

Yes, i second your thoughts, it is however very difficult to get comparable data.
The outgoing software buffer and its latency is devided into a softbuffer (that your synth uses to gather before output) and a lower level "hardware" buffersetting, that is sometimes editable, sometimes not.
Cracklin due to low buffer settings mainly occurs due to buffer underrun in the soft buffer, which is not influenced bij the audiohardware, just by the speed of the computer itself..
So, the performance difference btween audiodevices and their settings are mostly so deeply hidden, you cant speak about it..
Just exchanging experiences is the best we can do here!
Only (input/output) latency measurement with loopback timing are valid for comparisons.. So for measurement reasons the audio path can be used, it will serve just as well for synth only comparison.

Brand & Model :  Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1

Status: RECOMMENDED (especially for USB 3 ports)

Computer Type & OS: Microsoft Surface Pro, Windows 8

Computer Connection method: USB 3

Driver version: 3.1.0

DAW/VSTi/AU Software Instrument used: Ableton Live, Cakewalk Dimension Pro, Native Instruments Guitar Rig 5

Comment:  I never had very good results with this interface with my older Win7 computer, but that may have been down to the USB implementation on that motherboard.  When I picked up the Surface Pro, I found that NI was among the first to specifically address USB 3 compatibility in driver release notes, and it's probably no coincidence that this interface performs well connected to the SP's single USB 3 port.

The interface defaults to a buffer size of 128 samples, which is nice and snappy, but I did hear the occasional pop, so I increased this to 192 samples.  The feel is just slightly different, but still quite acceptable, and the system has been solid since.

Brand & Model :  Creamware Pulsar 2 (Sonic Core 6 DSP)

Status: RECOMMENDED*

Computer Type & OS: Gigabyte H55M-Usb3, i3 530, Windows XP SP3 32-bit

Computer Connection method: PCI*

Driver version: Scope 4.0

DAW/VSTi/AU Software Instrument used: Sonar 5.2 and Ableton Live 9.02

Comment: This is an old card, but a true workhorse. Creamware went bankrupt several years ago, but Sonic Core bought the remains and has launched it's own line of cards along software and driver updates. Latest version is Scope 5.1 and runs in both 32 and 64-bit windows.

Strong points: Reliable, low latency, DSP, 16 ins/outs on ADAT (8 SMUX), WC, 2 CH SPDIF in/out, 2 Ch Analog in/out.
Weak spots: Very picky about motherboards and chipsets.

Latency in Ableton: sub 6 ms in/out in 44.1 kHz (In my config 2.93 ms in and 2.93 ms out). Sub 3 ms round trip at 96 kHz (In my config 1.36 ms in and 1.36 ms out)
Latency using DSP: Negligible

Dynatube amps by Softube sounds goodish and has very low latency in this system.

*) Old cards are picky about what chipsets they run on. I.e. Intel H55 is recommended, but the H57 is not. Search forums.planetz.com for working setups and suggestions. Sonic Core has launched the Xite range of cards that are way more powerfull and run on PCIe or Expresscard using an optional conversion card.

Full disclosure.,, I have many audio interfaces that were provided for a review a few years back , free of charge. I received all of the entry level Apogee interfaces available during that period, One, Duet, and Gio, along with several very high end models from Apogee, Metric Halo, and other developers. The Gio, ( the least expensive of the group) has been sitting in the case for 18 months or longer since that review was completed, as It was lacking enough inputs to be used in my recording studio.

The Gio is a bit pricey when compared to modern audio interfaces available, $395.00
However, I have recently found it is actually a very practical unit for use with the FTP in live situations.
It is a 1 in 2 out interface, which is okay for mono guitar signal. The quality of the converters is very good, and it is extremely road worthy and familiar in shape and design to guitar foot pedals.

It was designed for use with Logic, Mainstage and Garageband. It s very durable, reminiscent of an FCB 1010 but smaller. It has an input for an expression pedal, which is a real benefit when using FTP. It has 1/4 " connections and a usb output to interface with laptop.

I have been using Mainstage 2 mostly with the FTP, either with or without using the Fishman app. And this unit has been a real godsend as I design a second platform to take the FTB outside of the studio setting.

Full disclosure,.. I did not spend my own money on this. It was provided for a review of audio interfaces a few years ago.

Not much to say, it is the best. I much prefer this to the Apogee Symphony series, although In most pro studios, you re likely to see the Symphony. I only post this here for comparison.

I sure wouldn't take this on this road, although I believe Adrian Belew does have a few in his touring rack, and he is an endorser of their products.

I really dig the GiO.  I wish there were driver support for using it with a Windows rig.

Does anyone out there have a Native Instruments Rig Kontrol 3 they can comment on?  I have the RK1 and RK2, but neither can be configured to send MIDI to other VSTs etc.

Comment: Updated Review  -
After further time using this unit, I will lower this from 5 stars,  down to 3 stars due to the constant low level background noise. Remove the noise gate in your IOS Amp Sim of choice, and you will experience a fair amount of hiss and noise, which rear their head anytime you attempt to hold a singing note using a high gain patch. Play note, count 1000, 2000, 3000, and the next thing you hear will be the sound of your Note dying out, and then replaced by the hiss level rising in volume and then the noise gate kicks in and stutters.

Comment: The benefits are it does have a Stereo analog Line Input, but for the most part I cant use nor recommend this Line6 IOS interface or the proprietary Mobile POD app due to the long latency with zero user controls to change this. Build quality is poor and the dock port contacts are cheap, it often self disconnects from the iPad if there is any vibration. Not Recommended.

Look for a replacement "Line6 SonicPort" with Apple Lightning compatibility soon
EDIT 2015: The Line6 SonicPort VX version is recommended

The SONUUS i2M is a very misunderstood product. Its an ultra small unit with only one 1/4" Instrument Input, and one USB Output.

It also has a small momentary switch to change from Chromatic to Pitch Bend MIDI Mode - yes the i2M is compatible with either Guitar or Bass Instruments, works as a Core Audio Interface with OSX Macs, an ASIO Audio Interface on Windows PC's - which is unique in that the Sonuus ASIO Audio Driver is special and can co-exist with your other ASIO Audio Interfaces on Windows - But it also Combines all the features and functionality of the older ( and larger) Sonuus G2M and B2M. Its a real swiss army knife with far more functionality than first glance. Very low noise and low latency audio input on Ipad. it also works as a MIDI Input interface with an iPad or iPhone - need to test it with my Android Galaxy Note 2 and a USB OTG adapter.

Sonuus i2M + Apple USB Camera Adapter works very well with iPAd (Much Lower audio noise than any other Ipad Audio Interfaces that employ the IPad 4 conductor headset jack. So this small i2M device also gives you a good low latency IPad powered Guitar or Bass Audio Input Interface +  another monophonic Guitar to MIDI channel source to trigger soft syhtns (no polyphony / no chords)

QuoteCompatibility with iPad MIDI / Audio
by james ยป Wed Nov 24, 2010 5:30 pm

Apple have released their new iOS (4.2) for iPad, and we can confirm that the i2M musicport MIDI works with this. Using the free "MIDI Monitor" application, you can see that it works correctly. This should also work on the iPhone4, but we've not tested that yet.

To connect the i2M musicport to the iPad, you need the "USB Camera Connection Kit".

Audio input from the i2M musicport also works on the iPad, and has done since iOS 3.2.

Today I tested several Guitar Amp sims on iPad, and at this hour JamUp Pro wins by a long shot. It can get pricey with all the "in app" purchases for additional Amps,FX, 8 track recorder, Looper, Full assignable MIDI mapping. With my iPad Mini and enabling "Ultra Low Latency" mode (in JamUp Pro XT), and using my Sonuus I2M + Apple Lightning USB Camera Adapter, this is extremely fast, -as fast as using a standard Multi-FX unit, and very clean - first IOS Guitar Input adapter I can use that is clean enough i can disable the damn Noise gates and allow all my full dynamic range of my playing on every patch.

Here is what I have tried for iPad Guitar Audio Interface
(Bad to Best)
* PRS passive "IOS GuitarBud Cable"   =  (junk!)
* Peavey AmpKit  = (total junk &*&%)
* IK Multimedia iRIG  = (consistent, but self oscillating feedback on high gain patches on any IOS Amp Sim)
* IK Multimedia iRIG Stomp  - (works OK for headphones, but way too much "hiss" for live performance when feeding self powered PA cabs.
* Line-6 Mobil In   =  (cleaner audio but way too much latency)
* Korg PX5D + Apple CCK = (works well, but must set a clean - no FX patch for best operation)
* Zoom G3 +Apple CCK   = (works well, but must set a clean - no FX patch for best operation)
* Fender G-DEC 3 Thirty = ( works well, but must set a clean - no FX patch for best operation, and its not very portable for hotel room, but perfect for using at small gigs )
* Alesis I|O Dock = works, but a bit large to carry all the time, no MIDI Sysex, and preamps could be better)
* Alesis I|O 2 + Powered USB Hub+ Apple CCK - similar to I\O dock, but the Guitar Instrument setting clips and distorts too early.
* Sonuus i2M+ Apple CCK (Im in love with this unit! - perfect for "life on the road" - VERY SMALL and CLEAN, and LOW LATENCY)

It has me shouting "Eureka"  - the Sonuus i2M has VERY low Noise on All iPad audio apps. For my needs the Sonuus i2M is a better value than the Apogee Jam, as the i2M has equivalent or better audio performance, + its a great hardware monophonic Guitar to MIDI convertor too!

DAW/VSTi/AU/IOS Instrument used:  Jam Up Pro XT, Meteor MultiTrack

Great clean audio interface  - Multiple Audio input channels seen in IOS, MIDI I/O Works too - No need for a powered USB HUB !

It lacks hardware buttons to configure the XLR / TRS Combo input jacks to Instrument inputs, and enable the input gain pad attenuator.

Hook it up to a PC/Mac and run the Focusrite MixControl app first - adjust and save your desired input jack configuration settings - then unplug and then re-connect to the iPad .
as a tidbit of important info - Read the Focusrite Scarlett owners manual  - the "trick" is you need a Mac or PC to run the Scarlet Mix Control app  first - define your I/O settings you wish to use with iPad then click "Save To Hardware" - this writes the Scarlett I/O configuration to an internal flash rom in the scarlett hardware  - then when you connect the Scarlett to your ipad - it will use the pre-defined I/O settings that you stored in the hardware.

After my Presonus Audiobox 1818VSL fiasco - I was recently seeking yet another 8 channel Analog to ADAT convertor box - was looking at the new Behringer AD-8200  - but found a close out Scarlett 18i20 at Full Compass Audio for $360 - so I grabbed it and discovered I can use the  Scarlett 18i20 as a stand alone 8 channel analog to 8 channel optical ADAT interface - without a computer.

QuoteBut after further time using this unit, I will lower this from 5 stars,  down to 3 stars due to the constant low level background noise. What's interesting is this is exactly how I would describe my experience with the Sonuus i2M, which I know you like a lot for iOS applications.  I wrestled the i2M into "acceptable" territory by attenuating the pre-amp gain as far as I could, but it's still more noise than I think I'll be able to tolerate long term.  I started to feel like I was trying too hard to like the unit, and decided to return it.  I do wonder whether it's a product that works better on iOS devices than - for instance - Windows laptops/tablets, but I can't come up with any reason why there would be more/less noise in either case.  I wanted to test the i2M on an iPad of my own, but after spending a couple of hours trying to find my CCK and considering buying another I decided that would just be throwing good money (and time) after bad.

The Sonuus wasn't terrible, of course; I remember the original iRig with the 1/8" jack for iPhone and what a complete joke that was.  But it was significantly more noise than my NI Audio Kontrol 1.  I'm not sure it's realistic to expect a small plastic enclosure like the i2M's to provide really adequate shielding, especially for use with high-gain amp models.

In my case when I wrote the above I had been using an IK Multimedia iRig Stomp Pedal that uses the iPad Headset 4 pole 3.5mm connection, and Ive come to the conclusion the  iPhone/  iPad Headset 4 pole 3.5mm Input connection is terrible for any audio interface. Way too much noise!

I remain extremely happy with the Sonuus I2M when used with my iPad Mini using Jam Up Pro XT.

As I said, compared to any IOS Audio Interface that uses the iPad Headset 4 pole 3.5mm connection, - the Sonuus I2M is comparatively Much cleaner and much greater dynamics and headroom.

I recently tested the  Focusrite Scarlet 18i6 with my ipad, and that works even better than I2M, and for grins I retested the Presonus Audiobox 18181VSL with iPad, and ironically liked that even better - but the 18181VSL does require a Powered USB HUB (while Scarlett 18i6 works direct with Apple USB Camera Kit)

One thing to keep in mind for all the above Audio Interface reviews is to fully read which Operating System and Hardware platform was used for testing!

For example, I have updated the AudioBox 1818VSL review, adding new info about how it performed well with IOS.

Understood.  I knew when I ordered the i2M that you had recommended it specifically for iOS, and that I was taking my chances with Windows and Guitar Rig.

Rig Kontrol 3 arrives tomorrow.  Hopefully this will be the interface that gets the job done after years of trial and error.  Fingers crossed.

Brand & Model:  Scarlett 2i4

Status: Works EXCELLENT

Computer Type & OS: ASUS Ultrabook, Win7 64-bit

Computer Connection method: USB 2.0 port

Driver version: 2.4.128.0

DAW/VSTi/AU/IOS Instrument used:  FTP, Guitar Rig, Amplitube

I was looking for a Hi-Z input, two preferably balanced outputs, and a MIDI in and out for my FTP rig.

+1 on the Scarlett line.  I'm now using a Scarlett 2i4.  VERY quiet.  Came right up.  Plugging the Scarlett into my USB 3.0 port caused my computer to reboot though; you MUST use the 2.0 port.

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tecnologiadj.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2012%2F09%2Ffocusrite-scarlett_2i4.jpg&hash=4b17de5a475e6009451cf993b814b675f48b6c19)

I also tried the Alesis io2, which worked OK, but was a touch too noisy and added just a hint too much latency.  Funny how the Alesis and Scarlett both reported 10ms, but the feel was very different.  The Alesis io2 would be OK at lower volumes.  The Alesis' strong points are that it's <$100, has a Hi-Z switch and also has MIDI in and out.

Just put together my FTP rig.  I'm using an ASUS Win7 64-bit Ultrabook, with one USB3 and one USB2 port.  The Scarlett must go into the USB2.  The FTP works fine in the USB3 port.

The Roland Duo Capture also looked VERY promising (I've had good luck with Edirol/Roland in the past), but was another $70 and I'm just having a bit of a hard time throwing more $ Roland's way at the moment.

Allows Ultra Low Latency to be turned on in Jamup Pro and I like that the iRig Pro has the separate hardware 5 pin MIDI Input port , which means I could use an external MIDI pedal (KMI SoftStep) to control everything. Comes with a supplied lightning adapter cable for latest Ipads as well as iPad 30 pin dock cable and USB for Mac compatibility.

The iRig Pro looks awesome, and providing all three connectors (USB, 30-pin, Lightning) is a really classy touch.  I just wish the USB connection were also supported by a PC driver.  That would make the purchase a 100% no-brainer.

If I understand correctly, using the Apogee Quartet with IOS will allow you to use GarageBand instruments on an iPad through the Quartet's USB MIDI input? And also use the audio outputs of the GR55 at the same time?
I am considering one of these to use with my new MacBook Pro and this would be icing on the cake if it works for MIDI from the GR55 as we'll...
Thanks for this List!

Brand & Model :  Apogee Quartet (Mac and iOS only)

Status: RECOMMENDED

Computer Type & OS: Apple iMac 27" 3.4GHz i7 running OS X 10.8.3 / iPad 3 running iOS 6.1.3

Computer Connection method: USB

Driver version: 1.19.4 (February 2013)

Actually many other interfaces deliver this functionality. I do the same with Focusrite Saffire 18i6+CCK connection to IPad.

Or a behringer IS-202 but that is only 16bit audio.

Scarlett 2i4 is a 2 in / 4 out USB audio interface featuring two award-winning Focusrite pre-amps and four high-quality audio outputs. Housed in an anodised aluminium unibody chassis, the Scarlett 2i4 is the perfect audio interface for musicians and digital DJs.

Get Started
Connect Scarlett 2i4 to your Mac or PC and get ready to make music! With the very best in digital audio technology and a variety of input and output options, the Scarlett 2i4 will capture and playback your sound with superb quality.

Plug straight in
The front panel has two combo XLR inputs so you can connect microphones, guitars and line level signals with absolute confidence that your sound is in safe hands. Use the "PAD" function for loud guitars or microphones, and use the "DIRECT MONITOR" control for a low-latency mix of input and playback signals.

Keep an eye on your levels
Unique signal halos let you know that you've got a good audio level for recording. Green is good and red means that your audio is too loud, and that your should lower the level control.

DJ-ready outputs
With 4 RCA outputs, a high-level headphone output and pristine audio quality, in a package ready for the road, the Scarlett 2i4 is ideal for today's digital performers and laptop DJs.

25 years of experience
Since 1985, Focusrite has been a leading manufacturer in the professional audio field. Focusrite mic pres are the choice of leading artists, recording studios and engineers around the world. Those years of audio experience ensure the Scarlett 2i4 sounds as beautiful as it looks.

High Quality Mic Preamps
Scarlett 2i4 features two high quality award-winning mic preamps. With more than 25 years of experience designing analogue equipment, Focusrite produce the best mic preamps in the industry. With Scarlett 2i4, the best of analogue and digital are combined to provide a class-leading input stage for your audio.

High Quality Outputs
With a dynamic range of over 105dB (real world performance), your music will sound amazing going out of Scarlett 2i4's professional digital to analogue conversion, and into your DJ mixer, main speakers or headphones.

MIDI I/O
On the back panel are MIDI IN and MIDI OUT ports providing connectivity to your synth modules and digital pianos.

USB bus powered
Take your Scarlett 2i4 anywhere! With USB bus powering, your Scarlett 2i4 will work anywhere your laptop will, even when using 48V Phantom power. No mains power supply required.

Rugged Metal Unibody Case
The anodised aluminium unibody chassis ensures that your Scarlett 2i4 can withstand life on the road, and looks great in your setup.

Unique Signal Halos
The gain halos which surround the gain knob for each input provide an easy way to know that the signal you're recording is the right level. It will show green when the signal is at a good level (above -24dBFS). If it turns to red, you know that the signal is too loud and is therefore clipping โ€“ if this happens, simply reduce the gain until the halo returns to green.

Direct Monitor Function
Turn the direct monitor control on the front panel of your Scarlett 2i4 and you will hear what you are recording through your speakers or headphones, without the signal having to go through your Mac or PC. This avoids the possibility of latency (introduced by your music software), which can be distracting while recording.

Included software for Mac and PC
Inside the box you'll find a code which will unlock Ableton Live Lite 8, as well as Focusrite's Scarlett plug-in suite. Compatible with all major DAWs (digital audio workstations) on Mac and PC, Scarlett plug-in suite provides EQ, Compression, Gate and Reverb โ€“ essential tools for polishing your mix.

Brand & Model :  Digitech GNX3000 (Ebay $130)

Status: Highly RECOMMENDED

Computer Type & OS: Apple iPad Air 128GB, IOS 7.1 (11D167)

Computer Connection method: Apple Lightning USB Camera Adapter (separate Powered USB Hub not required)

This unit is a real sleeper  - with many desirable options and is full 24 bit audio USB AUDIO/MIDI Class Compliant device  for PC/Mac/iPad/iPhone with IOS7.

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.snapagogo.com%2Fuploads%2Fsource%2F982014%2F1397069820_796292905_GNX3K_ROUTING.PNG&hash=2e8699798732652f06d65866b56263d3d6da8593)
* 24 bit @44.1kHz  4 input  / 2 output Audio Interface  - set the GNX3000 in "Re-Amp" mode, and this bypasses the GNX3000's built in Guitar FX/Amp  processor, and Change the GNX3000's USB AUDIO Mode to (ASIO/Mac) [not WDM]  allows the GNX3000 to work as a low latency 24 bit Audio I/O interface for Positive Grid BIAS /Jamup Pro- great low noise Guitar Instrument Pre-amp, also a selectable  XLR Mic Pre, or Stereo Balanced TRS Line Inputs, and separate  Stereo Balanced TRS Line Outputs and XLR Stereo Balanced Line Outputs.

* Full working 5pin DIN MIDI I/O Interface with no restrictions - Use the  GNX3000 as a MIDI I/O Interface with iPad, Mac, Windows PC

I used to own the previous model  - the 2004 Digitech GNX4 with built in 8 track recorder, but sold it years ago, This GNX3000 dates from 2006, but actually I find the DSP Amp Sims sound rather decent with good touch dynamic response with most factory presets have many decent tones you can gig with. No brief Audio Muting during GNX3000 patch changes means you can use the GNX3000 as your Guitar Processor as well as your USB Audio Interface (with XLR Outputs ) for running backing tracks or Audio loops or SoftSynths on your iPad - and have no audio dropouts of the backing tracks during GNX3000 patch changes. (this is something Roland VG/GR Products can not do )
Too bad the current models of Digitech RP floor processors all lack 5pin MIDI I/O. (only the rack mount GSP-1101 has MIDI I/O)
Sadly the onboard GNX3000 footswitches and pots do not send consistent MIDI CC# commands  - still mapping which modes do what   - I do see occasional MIDI CC# traffic and Patch change commands generated by the GNX3000.
The good news is with just one USB cable, the iPad+CCK sees the GNX3000 as a 24bit Audio I/O and 5pin MIDI I/O interface  - so I can use a separate 5 pin MIDI controller connected to the GNX3000's MIDI Input, or connect a Keyboard Synth to the GNX3000's MIDI Output and have iPad MIDI Sequencer provide the MIDI Note on / off events to trigger the external keyboard via 5pin DIN MIDI connection.

Another option is connect the iPAd(+ CCK) to a powered USB 2.0 Hub  - then connect a Fishman Tripleplay, Korg Nanokontrol, Logidy UMI-3 USB Foot Controller, or KMI Softstep for MIDI Control, along with the GNX3000 to handle the Audio I/O chores. I'm exploring making mods to support using the GNX3000 as a remote MIDI footswitch.

Brand & Model :  Novation / Focusrite X-Station (Ebay $150)

Status: Highly RECOMMENDED

Computer Type & OS: Apple iPad Air 128GB, IOS 7.1 (11D167)

Computer Connection method: Apple Lightning USB Camera Adapter (separate Powered USB Hub required)

Its an often overlooked fact - but these older X-Stations employ Focusrite designed Mic Pres (Focusrite owns Novation) and offer 24 bit USB Class Compliant audio I/O to iPad  - with similar performance to Scarlett 2i4
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novation_Digital_Music_Systems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novation_Digital_Music_Systems)

Frankly its shocking for me to read all the excuses, wrong information,  and struggles that today's Music gear manufacturers are having in 2014 to produce a product which is 24 bit USB Streaming Audio and USB Class Compliant and full MIDI I/O over USB  - when Novation  / Focusrite were doing this 10 years ago

I found my latest X-Station-25 for $150 on Ebay    - and it features:

* A Mono / polyphonic synth (Keyboard has excellent Pro feel and Aftertouch!) (no computer required) with thick analog sound heard on many UK pop records
* A MIDI controller with lots of knobs and sliders all mapable as MIDI CC# controls with nice LCD display for real time status for playing iPad Synths using Ipad+CCK) or tweaking settings in other gear - like N.I. Guitar Rig ( with Mac via USB) or VG-99 / GR-55 using old school 5 pin DIN MIDI I/O. There's a trackpad and highly configurable joystick
* A 2 in  / 2 out 24 bit Audio Interface with XLR / TRS Combo  inputs and Balanced TRS outputs for PC/Mac/Ipad(+CCK)
* A USB to 5 pin DIN MIDI I/O interface for PC/Mac/Ipad(+CCK)

* Built in Real time FX( Delays, Reverb, Chorus, Compression, EQ)  for the Synth or any live signal fed into its  XLR / TRS Combo  inputs.

These used to retail for $750 here in USA back in 2005

Yes -the "requirement for Powered USB Hub" remains a source of confusion for many

Review this  Auria Audio Interface Recommendations page
http://www.auriaapp.com/Support/auria-audio-interfaces (http://www.auriaapp.com/Support/auria-audio-interfaces)

And look at the column "Works without Powered Hub?"

and observe that many AC Powered Audio interfaces still require a separate  Powered USB Hub before they will work with an iPAd

This is due to the design of the USB port on the Audio interface, as its standard USB design practice for the connected USB Host Computer to power the USB PHY IC inside the USB Client.

Powered USB HUB is NOT for Powering the attached USB Device, but instead used only for powering up the bulk Capacitor on the typical Client USB Interface  - like a Silicon Labs CP-2101 USB Interface IC - the "turn on inrush current exceeds the ipad's power capability, and this explains the "This Device exceeds the Power Available" error message that iPads/ iPhones generate when using many USb devices with the Apple USB Camera Connection Kit.

http://www.silabs.com/Support%20Documents/TechnicalDocs/CP2101.pdf (http://www.silabs.com/Support%20Documents/TechnicalDocs/CP2101.pdf)

I suspect there is an issue with momentary in rush current overload, which the Ipad dock port hardware senses and pops up the Accessory uses excessive power Error message. That happens anytime the initial USB connection sequence occurs in the wrong order, if you continue to re-attempt to connect things in the wrong order a few times in a row, the iPad's internal Dock Port USB UART's thermal protection will shutdown and disable the iPad dock port. This often requires the iPad to be completely powered down, wait a few minutes and then after re-power up, finally (if you are lucky to discover, use, and remember the correct iPad Dock / Powered USB Hub, USB Audio Interface connection sequence) the iPad finally shakes hands and allows external USB Audio connections. Its when you do things in the wrong sequence, it can take several minutes before things will ever work again - so remember this as a potential disaster at your live gig.

Thanks, yes, I've run into this with several devices.  Sounds like the X-Station is definitely one of them.  I've been going back and forth between one of these and the Roland Duo Capture EX.  This may tip the scales back toward the Roland.

Still a bit confused.  If it's on battery power does that eliminate the need to use a powered hub?  What I don't want is to have to use a powered hub in addition to whatever audio/MIDI interface I buy next for iPad.  A powered hub starts to subtract from the portability of the "portable" solution by adding extra "stuff" to carry and connect.

My desire is less about the need to operate without AC power (though that's a plus) and more about smaller and fewer things to move around and connect up.

Powered USB Hub is Mandatory for X-Station

USB Hub may be powered either by Battery or AC Power supply.

QuoteA powered hub starts to subtract from the portability of the "portable" solution by adding extra "stuff" to carry and connect.

But know that compared to running off AC Mains power, running X-Station from 100% Battery power yields 20db more SNR , and much lower noise floor, and no hum.

X-Station has a 6-"C" Battery Compartment, and I plan on modffication to use that battery compartment space to install my own USB Hub and Li-Ion Battery  - so it can connect to an iPad+CCK

The Duo Capture EX is what I'm leaning toward.  Here are my ideal specifications for an iPad interface.  The Duo Capture EX comes very close (I think all except the charging the iPad when on AC power).  I don't think a device that meets every single one of these exists.

AFIAK nothing exists that meets those specs.

The Alessis I!O Dock 2 is supposed to, but its the crucial "How Many actual Audio bits are streamed live over the USB Interface" question is where both  Alessis I!O Dock II

, and Behringer IS-202
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=9005.0 (https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=9005.0)

FAIL - as both are only 16 bits, and marketing departments always try had to hide this fact, by hyping the 24 bit A/D  and 24 bit D/A - which can be present and functional, but the bottleneck is the USB Streaming I/O which is typically only 16 bits on many products

The ioDock 2 was a candidate until I learned that it is compatible with iPad 1-4 only. I'm sure it technically works with the Air but who wants to buy something brand new that doesn't quite fit right. That and in my experience Alesis preamps are not bad, but not on par with Focusrite, Roland, etc.

If the Duo EX only streams 16 bits to iPad, then that might put the X-Station back on top.

Why is 16-bit audio a deal breaker?
24-bit conversion, if the converter is really top notch, is definitely better.
However, unless you're recording highly dynamic music, the difference is subtle.

QuoteWhy is 16-bit audio a deal breaker?

I also notice a large difference recording vocals. The human voice is a highly dynamic instrument. :)

I read in a review somewhere that in iPad mode the Duo EX only does 44.1k sampling as opposed to 48k.  That would be fine.  Frankly my ears cannot hear one bit of difference between 44.1 and 192kHz sampling rate.  The difference between 16 and 24 bit resolution can be night and day for some material though.

Any rumors as to when the Griffin unit will hit the shelves?  That looks really good on paper!  I wonder what the pres will be like in it.

How would I test this?

I use my ears and launch BIAS, as this app makes it easy to hear 24 bits vs 16 bits.

I own a few confirmed 24 bit interfaces (IRig Pro) and that's become my basis for comparison.
My Sonuus I2M has a decent preamp but is only 16 bit and once you hear the unmistakable granularity of using a 16 bit interface with Positive Grid BIAS your ears learn to appreciate a superior sound from a true 24 bit interface

Edit - Confirmed  - Roland Duo Capture EX is a fine 24 bit Audio  / MIDI Interface for IPad/ IPhone - but use NiMH Rechargable AA batteries to obtain 6 hours of use per charge

Am I correct in my understanding that these comparisons are with different converters?

Here is another way to compare 24-bit vs. 16-bit recording depth.
Use a single 24-bit converter that can operate in both 16 and 24 bit modes.
For instance, Ableton Live allows the user to set the bit depth to either 24 or 16 in the preferences.
Using a 24-bit A/D, recordings at both bit depths in Live can be made with the same A/D.
Using a 24-bit D/A to monitor both the 16 and 24 bit depth A/D recordings, any differences heard are only due to the 8-bit truncation of the A/D path.

An even better test would be to do the above 16 vs. 24 bit depth comparison using everything from line level signals to signals that have to be amplified significantly by the preamplifier (such as recording voice or acoustic instruments with microphones with/without phantom power).
Title: Re: Survey of Working Audio Interfaces.
Post by: supernicd on July 11, 2014, 12:06:37 PM
The test would be about whether the audio interface delivers 24-bit resolution through the entire signal path from A/D conversion all the way to the recorded track on an iPad specifically, rather than on a PC/Mac.  Auria doesn't have an option to manually specify the bit depth.  Cubasis for iPad does, though.  Perhaps the experiment you describe below could be conducted there.  In the end you'd still be relying on your ears but at least you could potentially A/B the same recorded material for comparison.

My point is that if you have a single 24-bit interface that limits itself to only 16 bit resolution when recording to the iPad, the difference in resolution may not matter, or might be very small, or might be large enough to care about it.  A proper test on a system with that converter in both modes would let you know if the difference exists enough to matter.  I guess you'd have to test on a PC or on Cubasis for iPad.

Yep, point well taken.  I don't own the device in question, but am considering a purchase.  Bbob does have the Roland Duo Capture EX, and, I think, was offering to test 24-bit depth recording on iPad for us, if we could offer up a procedure.  I'm not sure there is a procedure that doesn't involve letting your ears be your guide, though.

But know that you can test any audio interface for consideration using nothing more than

* Positive Grid BIAS Running any High Gain amp

* Electric Guitar with humbuckers  and set its Volume knob down to  "3" (not 10)

Under the above test conditions 16 bit Audio Interface will always reveal a poor noise floor compared to a  24 bit interface .

Its really apparent  - the 16 bit interfaces always have a lot of hiss in this situation.

and the 24 bit ones do not.

Of course the Instrument preamp employed is crucial and plays a big role in noise floor too.

But here in my test lab I have already reviewed many many interfaces

Avoid 16 interfaces, as there is currently a bit of a marketing shell game afoot  - many of these new IOS Audio Inteface products (ike Alesis IO Dock) boast 24 bit A/d and D/A - but fail to mention that the important USB Audio Class Compliant Streaming IC used at the dock port USB interface failto mention they do not pass 24 bit audio - thus this becomes the bottle neck and truncates  all audio down to 16 bits.
I use my ears and launch BIAS, as this app makes it easy to hear 24 bits vs 16 bits.

TRUE - However  "RECORDING ON IPAD is an entirely different application  - I'm specifically talking about the impact of audio interface bit resolution when using Positive Grid BIAS Amp modeler - which has higher performance demand and  requirements compared to  simply trying to record clean audio on the IPAD using Meteor, Cubasis, Auria DAW, N-Track Studio, etc

Kind of up to my ears in other time bandits over the next few days.

Thanks.

Why is 16-bit audio a deal breaker?

For most casual purposes 16 vs 24-bit is not a problem.  You can play on your practice amp & think it sounds great - and it does.  Left lightly processed & amplified moderately it's OK.  Perfect for a hobbyist - who will never take it to a practice studio, recording studio or live venue (at "11").

To my ear, 16 bit sounds noticeably weaker when you (a) amplify it LOUD for a live setting, thru an amp or PA, or (b) run it into a DAW and further process it with VSTs.   In either of these scenarios, the noise floor issue Elantric referenced above is an issue, plus, the simple fact that you're putting a much (256x) lower rez signal thru digital processing.

It's like running a 480-x640 jpeg thru photoshop.  No matter what you do even with Photoshop's advanced algorithms & technology, it's still a low rez pic...  Zoom in closely and it's obvious.  Loud volume is the audio equivalent of 'zooming in'.

Something about processing is problematic, too...  If you're gonna run your signal thru some VSTs, a 16 bit source and a 24-bit source sound pretty different.  It's like digital processing amplifies any issues/artifacts from the lower-rez input.  It sounds like .mp3s...

Not a very scientific analysis, I admit.  But to my ears, 16 bits is excellent until you amplify it or significantly process it...

I did the Duo-Capture EX / iRig Pro comparison but messed up neglecting the above (volume was set to 10) so I will do a re-do when I get back home in a few days.

Signal chain: Godin LGX-SA electric pickups output (pickup selector in middle) to DuoCapture EX / iRig Pro to iPad 2 (7.1.2) running Bias (1.5.0.22820) to Sennheiser HD 280 headphones I could not notice a sound difference between the two interfaces.  But I'm not a high gain guy either.

The mp3's below were made recording into Loopy HD linking Bias to Loopy with Audiobus.  Loopy creates m4a files that were converted to mp3 using iTunes.

Thanks Bob!  I'm not hearing any sound difference between these two files either, at least on the speakers I'm listening through now (they are not the best - will listen again on my studio monitors later).  Looks like indications are good that the Duo Capture EX is 24-bit to iPad, and is definitely a solid performer.

Playing on with guitar on "10"  -you may not hear the difference between 16 bit and 24 bit.

The whole point in using a guitar with volume set to "3" , is the signal must now compete with the noise floor and hiss of the audio interface.

Also you must disable any Noise gates in your Guitar Amp sim software - remember my whole point for recommending 24 bit audio interfaces over 16 bit interfaces is not for recording - its for live iPad Guitar Amp simulation software - this is where you really need a 24 bit high SNR Audio interface, else you must use Noise gates all the time, and that ruins your dynamic range  - and you loose the ability to "roll the guitar volume down to clean up" a high gain Amp sim in Positive Grid BIAS (my main objective here)

Analog to Digital converter technology
With current technology, Analog to Digital Converters that are "24-bit" do not capture the full 24 bits.
Reality is they capture somewhere between 18 to 21 bits.  The rest of the low order bits are just noise.

18 bits of capture represents a dynamic range of 108 dB, while 21 bits would be a whopping 126 dB.
To my knowledge, even the best converters that cost big money can't get to 126 dB.
For reference, a 16-bit converter has a dynamic range of "only" 96 dB.

24-bit vs. 16-bit converters usage
Do you need those extra few bits in your conversion?  It depends on your application.
Personally, I'll take the extra bits even though for most things I do, it won't make a difference I can hear.  If nothing else, having those extra bits allows me to record at a lower level, meaning I'm less concerned about overs.
However, I have a TC Helicon VoiceLive 3.  One knock against it is that it doesn't include a USB Audio Interface.  Well, supposedly TC Helicon is working on it but rumor has it that if they do implement it, it will be only a 16-bit interface.  I'm fine with that for this application.  If I need a truly clean recording, I'm not going to use the VoiceLive 3 anyway.

Here's a pretty good article about bit depth and the 16-bit vs. 24-bit discussion:

Observe these facts:

* For recording, its tough for mortals to "hear" the difference between 16 bits and 24 bits - its mostly when the soft music passages occur that the noise floor of 16 bit is apparent ( compared to much lower noise floor of 24 bits.

* When using computer based High Gain Tube Amp Modeling, with a normal electric guitar,  this unique application easily reveals the noise floor differences between 16 bits vs 24 bits when the guitar's volume knob is rolled down to "3" and all noise gates are disabled

I think the easiest way to look at it is an analogy to analog tape. While it's fine to listen to your commercial cassette tapes, you wouldn't dream of using a cassette to master your own recordings. The same is true for digital, you master at 24 or 32 and copy your final mix at 16.

AKM may claim their converter can reach 120 dB, but I've seen no real world audio interfaces for sale that claim a 120 dB range.
Some companies may use clever marketing to claim they use the "120 dB conversion", but if they include any real world test specs, it won't be 120 dB.
I remember back in the day that many lesser priced audio interfaces had marketing that claimed they "used the same 24-bit chips found in high end Pro Tools units".  What they didn't say, was that these lower priced audio interfaces didn't achieve anywhere near the performance of their higher priced counterparts, even though they used the same A/D and/or D/A chips.

Anyway, even if some company is claiming an audio interface that achieves 120 dB using these chips, that still is "only" 20 bits of conversion, not 24.
Mind you, I'd be THRILLED to own a box that could achieve a real 120 dB conversion.  I'm guessing the price is more than I can afford ...

Most DAW software process audio internally using 32-bit float or even higher word sizes.  (32-bit float has it's own issues, but that is yet another discussion)
Therefore, the 16-bit samples only limit dynamic range at the A/D and D/A stages, and nowhere else.  All reverb trails, etc., will be at the full resolution of the DAW internal processing.  They will only be chopped back down to 16-bit if you're creating audio CDs or outputting to a 16-bit D/A for monitoring.
In Ableton Live 9, they even say "If you plan to burn audio CDs of your recorded files, you need to select 16-bit; Bit depth is not a factor if you are burning data CDs."

QuoteAKM may claim their converter can reach 120 dB, but I've seen no real world audio interfaces for sale that claim a 120 dB range.

Thats because there is more to the equation than simply the A/D converter performance - The Analog Mic Pre / Instrument Preamp design , and the power supply design, PCB design, as well as the target load input impedance and gain sensitivity all contribute to the Dynamic range with low THD+N and low Noise floor performance.

Likewise similar design approaches are important for the D/A Output section performance - all must be considered as contributing to the final total system Noise floor.

For example RME UCX interfaces state "real world" Signal to Noise ratio (SNR): 111 dB RMS unweighted, 113 dBA
http://www.rme-audio.de/en_products_fireface_ucx.php (http://www.rme-audio.de/en_products_fireface_ucx.php)

Likewise, you may find an Alesis Audio interface that share the same AKM 24 bit A/D as a high performance $1k interface, but the analog section and power supply and PCB design layout have been compromised to meet a target low cost - with resulting lower audio performance

* When using computer based High Gain Tube Amp Modeling, with a normal electric guitar,  this unique application easily reveals the noise floor differences between 16 bits vs 24 bits when the guitar's volume knob is rolled down to "3" and all noise gates are disabled  - thus the importance of using the best audio interface you can afford for this application.

Exactly!
RME, one of the best in the business, are getting almost 19 bits of real world conversion out of the UCX, and that is fantastic!
Note that RME says the UCX uses "new 2011 A/D and D/A high-performance converter design ".
Maybe they'll eek out a couple dB more in a year or two from their next unit.

So, since RME can get almost 19 bits of conversion out of the UCX, imagine how much many of us are getting from our lesser interfaces.

As a matter of fact, the RME UCX is the interface on my current wish list.
Now, ..., if I can just talk my wife in to this.  ;)
A group buy on the UCX is a good idea isn't it?

I would also suggest that the UCX likely gets a better conversion in 16-bit mode than many lesser priced "24-bit" units.
Of course, if I had a UCX, I wouldn't run it in 16-bit mode.

Many lesser priced "24-bit" converters may have very little difference between what they get in 16-bit mode than what they get in 24-bit mode.
Therefore, if using one of these lower price converters, and it forces a 16-bit mode for a particular usage (like iPad), that may not even be distinguishable from it's 24-bit mode.  Real tests need to be done to see if it matters for the particular converter.  And even if it does produce a noticeable difference, it still may be good enough depending on the application and expectations of the user.

Brand & Model :  Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP

Status: RECOMMENDED

Computer Type & OS: HP i5, Windows 8.1

Computer Connection method: Firewire

Driver version: Firmare 2761, Driver 4.1.4.18150 rev 2853 (!)

DAW/VSTi/AU Software Instrument used: Cubase, Reason, Reaper

Probably the best step up from the cheap cost-cutting USB devices into something with respectable performance. I was stunned when I moved from using the audio inputs on a Novation synth, the level of clarity and detail you hear from the Focusrite is downright incredible. This version comes with Focusrite's VRM room modelling DSP which is a very interesting way to work on headphones late at night, it attempts to simulate different listening environments, monitor setups etc and is a useful tool for refreshing your ears and taking a new listen to a mix you've heard a thousand times. Built in compression/reverb/EQ can be useful (I use it mainly for DI bass) and the unit will interface with ADAT outputs for mixdown (although there are no ADAT outputs).

Optical in and out, useful routing options to allow loopback of your old analog effects boxes, multiple separate monitor and recording mixes, two independent headphone outs, each assignable to any monitor or record mix. If I have one complaint it's the lack of a front panel line/inst level switch - this can only be switched via the software. Overall, I can't fault this for the price.

I just took delivery of a Roland UA -22 Duo Capture EX and I love it. ( actually i can place my iPhone 6 Plus on top of the UA-22 and they are similar size.)
http://www.rolandus.com/products/details/1248/498 (http://www.rolandus.com/products/details/1248/498)

Turn your iPad into a professional recording device by connecting it to the DUO-CAPTURE EX*. Record vocals, guitar, keyboard, or other instruments with superb quality through the DUO-CAPTURE EX into the iPad using your favorite iOS apps. Additionally, the DUO-CAPTURE EX can function as a USB-MIDI interface to control iOS apps with electronic instruments such as MIDI keyboards, V-Drums, etc.

*Connect the DUO-CAPTURE EX to your iPad via Apple's iPad Camera Connection Kit. Batteries or AC power is required when using the DUO-CAPTURE EX with an iPad. You cannot charge your iPad using the DUO-CAPTURE EX.

Compared to Scarlett 2i4  - the UA-22 is much simpler to interface with iPhone/iPad - just install three AA batteries, move the rear Clock Source Select switch to "Tab" (Tablet), and press the rear Power Push Switch and connect to iPhone/iPad using the Apple USB Camera Adapter (CCK) - no need for a powered USB hub.

Iphone/iPhone IOS apps recognize the UA-22 as a 24 bit @ 44.1kHz Stereo Audio / MIDI I/O  Interface!

- Its Battery powered, and its 24 bit Stereo I/O, decent +48V Phantom Mic Pres, Decent Hi-Z Instrument Input. Stereo / mono Direct monitor switch, full 5 pin MIDI I/O interface,   and TRS balanced audio outputs.

Still sorting out how to use UA-22 along with FTP USB Receiver with  a USB Hub and one iPad Air

But so far this UA-22 meets my goals for "best IOS Mobile Live performance Audio/MIDI Interface for Yonac ToneStack, BIAS / JamupPro. Just add a MIDI foot pedal for control

Not that I'm aware of

One must recognize there is an orchestrated effort by Apple which mandates that any third party device that has a Lightning connection must be submitted to Apple for review and Apple approval of the "Made for "i" device ( MFi) specifications.

This is why many devices ( like Griffin StudioConnect HD, Sonoma Wireworks  GuitarJack Stage, etc) appear to consumers as "vaperware"

The truth is these were reviewed by Apple - who demanded the third party manufacturer go back and redesign their power supply.

An iPad Air spontaneously combusted this week in a Vodafon store in Canberra, Australia, filling the store with smoke and sending a continuous stream of sparks flying from the charging port of the device. The store was evacuated, the fire brigade was called, and the spectacular flaming tablet was officially extinguished. No one was injured in the fireworks. The iPad Air, however, could not be resuscitated.

The above is the charred and blackened iPad Air in question. As you can see, it is, as us technology gurus say, extremely dead. That is how it appeared after the fire brigade arrived; whether they had to use a full-on fire hose and for how long the fireworks lasted before being put out are unclear. An Apple employee reportedly went to the Vodafon store and picked up the corpse for an official autopsy.

One commentator suggests the cause of the high-tech firestorm may have been a faulty overcharge protection circuit. Lithium polymer batteries of the type installed on iPad Airs tend to explode when overcharged, so most devices making use of those types of batteries also come with the protection circuits. The iPad Air is no exception; it's just that this particular iPad Air just didn't receive the standard issue circuit, it appears, or it was installed less than flawlessly.

Apple hasn't yet issued an official statement about the cause of the explosion. There have been reports of iPhones and other smartphones exploding in the past, but this is the first publicly known incident involving an Apple tablet. For now, it's safe to say your brand-new iPad Air probably won't blow up while you're reading SlashGear, as this is the only reported case since the Retina tablet debuted Nov. 1.

Survey of Working Audio Interfaces.
================================

Brand & Model : Alesis FX USB 8 Channel mixer

Status: RECOMMENDED for solo artist or small ensemble, great for small home recording setup.

Computer Type & OS: (Toshiba laptop) & (Win7), dual core 2 MB RAM, 2 GHz- nothing special

Computer Connection method: (USB 2.0)

Driver version: (unknown)

DAW/VSTi/AU Software Instrument used: (Cubase LE 5- it came bundled with the mixer)

Comment: (insert your experience and thoughts here): This works perfectly, never a glitch. 16 bit, but I must have bad ears because I never detect any loss. If you pan channels L and R to send them to separate tracks in DAW, you can record 2 separate tracks at a time (woo-hoo). When doing this I monitor through a headphone amp, which allows me to monitor in mono. This mixer has no MIDI port and no USB input, but lots of other connectivity as well as inserts for a compressor, on board reverbs that are OK, etc. Zero latency monitoring. Knobs instead of sliders. Simple, not expensive. FWIW, I actually have no trouble just plugging GR-55 USB output into my computer though, and that gives a "true stereo" sound rather than having to pan L and R. I never noticed any noise from running GR-55 outputs through the mixer, but I figure going directly to the PC is more "pure."

Brand & Model :  MOTU Traveler Mk1

Status: RECOMMENDED

Computer Type & OS: MacBook Pro i7 quad core @ 2 Ghz, 8 MB Ram, 750 GB Seagate Hybrid 7200 RPM / SSD (boot drive)
iMac i7 quad core @ 3.4 Ghz, 32 MB Ram, 1 TB 7200 RPM (boot drive).

Computer Connection method: Firewire

Driver version:  1.6.54199

DAW/VSTi/AU Software Instrument used:  Logic Pro 9.1.8, Studio One 2.5, Guitar Rig 5, Amplitube 3, Waves GTR, Line 6 Pod Farm 2, etc.

Comment:

I've used my Traveler on Windows PC's with Cubase also with no issues. I now use Logic Pro on both of my Macs. The Traveler is a great interface.

I will add that MOTU can be powered by laptop. And it works as a sophisticated mixer without computer too.

FWIW - the high end Focusrite Scarlett USB interfaces ( 18i6, 18i20) work as a stand alone Mixers without a computer too.

Brand & Model :  Tascam US-366

Status: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Computer Type & OS: (Dell XPS 15, core i7, 16 GB RAM, SSD, Windows 8.1.

Computer Connection method: USB 2.0

Driver version: Can't remember.  Essential to get latest driver though

DAW/VSTi/AU Software Instrument used:  Ableton Live 9, Propellerheads Reason 8, Amplitube 3, Guitar Rig 5, Waves GTR

This is a surprisingly good interface.  Buffer settings are limited.  You have only a few choices.  However, at 24-bit and 44.1 KHz with buffer on the "lowest latency" setting, both Live and Reason report 49 samples.  For me, it's plenty low enough for live guitar use.  At 49 samples, my i7 barely breaks a sweat.  However, I have not tried any huge multitrack projects at that latency setting.
It does include a few effects.  EQ, Reverb, Compression.  They're nothing special.  I mostly don't use them.
Out of the box, things didn't work very well.  I had to get the latest driver AND the latest firmware updates from the website.  Once I did that, it has been flying quite happily.
I can't really compare the converters since it's been a while since I've listened critically to any really high end ones.  However, to my ears, it sounds  good.
The interface is also bus powered and still provides phantom power.  Cool.
One bummer about it is that after the computer goes to sleep and then wakes up, I have to unplug the USB cable and replug it to get everything working correctly again.  It is small, so that's not a deal breaker, but it is a bit annoying.

All in all, I am dumbfounded at how good this thing is considering how little it costs.

I saw the post on the previous page from someone using the GNX3000 as an interface...

Is anyone using a Boss GT-10 as an interface (only),  IE, not using the GT-10's onboard effects or models, just the USB interface portion.  If so, how well does it work with a DAW and something like Positive Grid Bias for live playing?  Latency?

thanks

The GT-10 is nearly 9 years old

Achieving low latency on Windows might be a battle, with better results on a Mac

if you want to use BIAS Desktop for Amp modeling, enable GP-10's USB Advanced Mode for lowest latency
and USB Direct Monitor "Off"

Explained in the GP-10 owners manual on page 90
http://cdn.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/GT-10_OM.pdf (http://cdn.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/GT-10_OM.pdf)

http://www.bossus.com/products/gt-10/downloads/ (http://www.bossus.com/products/gt-10/downloads/)

Of course since GP-10 is not USB class compliant,  it will not work with iPad+CCK.

Answering my own question here...

The (9 year old) Boss GT-10 works *perfectly* as an audio interface.  I'm using it in "Advanced USB" mode (Boss's default ASIO drivers) with Cantabile Performer (a simple VST host, much simpler than using a full blown DAW for simple live playing) to host Bias FX and Bias Amp and I have latencey down to a virtually undetectable 3.2ms, with no clicks, pops, dropouts or other issues whatsoever.  Sounds fantastic too.

Setup was painless, just install the Boss drivers, plug it in, turn off all of the FX and modeling on the GT-10 and away we go.

Perfect!  I can probably use the MIDI interface of the GT-10 to control midi functions on the computer, I haven't delved that deep, but I'm sure I can and will at some point.

Win7x64
Phenom II X4 955 processor @ 3.2ghz
8gb RAM
Nothing else special or noteworthy (all-on-board GigaByte Motherboard for everything else)

Cheers

Brand & Model :  Presonus Audiobox iTwo

Status: RECOMMENDED

Computer Type & OS: Desktop (MSI B75IA motherboard) Intel i3, 8GB RAM, SSD, Windows 10 64bit.

Computer Connection method: USB 2.0

Driver version: latest driver (Feb 2017)

DAW software used:  Reaper with cheap dynamic microphone (included Presonus Studio One 3 (Artist Edition) for every purchase of Audiobox iTwo).

I need a MIDI interface for my computer, my cheap Chineese made USB to MIDI cable didn't work since I upgraded my desktop to Windows10. Instead of buying Roland UM MIDI Mkii cable for around $40, I think why not an USB audio/MIDI interface such as Focusrite Scarlett 2i4? So I search for available brand/model in my area and is offered Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 ($205) or Presonus Audiobox iTwo ($150). I can't find Roland, iConnectivity, Tascam, and many other brands (yes I didn't search hard enough and I don't think I can get any better/cheaper than iTwo) so I took the offer. I read horror story about Presonus, and bad rap about Presonus older model: Audiobox USB, but since it was written many years ago and Presonus Audiobox iTwo is a newer model, so I think I will try this one.

What make me choose Presonus but not Focusrite model, because
1. They have almost the same specs, has MIDI I/O and two audio inputs; both can be configured as mic ins, guitar ins, or line ins.
2. Both can be USB bus powered and both have same big name AFAIK
3. iTwo is cheaper than 2i4
4. iTwo can connect direct to Ipad/Iphone

Actually what I really want to do with an USB audio interface is to hook up with my QNAP NAS (TS-653 Pro) to try to run a karaoke application, OceanKTV (I expect an USB audio class compliant will be recognized by the application and can be used). So this is more experimentation, and for me as long as it works any brand will do.

Today just I received the iTwo (firmware v1.32), installed the driver and the Presonus Studio One 3 (Artist edition) without any problem, still downloading lots of softwares as it's companion (not sure will like/use it or not). Configured the driver and run the Studio One Artist and the driver report a latency of around 5.5 ms.

Lots of things to test about this box, not yet connect to my QNAP (need to upgrade the QNAP to newer OS first which is I just find out still in beta version). But so far I am happy with this Presonus iTwo. If I have any bad experience, I will report back here.

Cheers.

On Windows OS - RMC Audio interfaces have substantially lower latency vs the competition

the sweet spot is a gently used RME UCX ( $950 used ) as that includes a full DSP with dynamics on every channel

I notice that there's not been any posting in this section for a while so thought it might be a good time to get some updated recommendation and see what's out there.

In a previous post I posed the question:
"I've got an Ipad Air on which I intend to use Jamup Pro/Bias amongst other things.

My question being is the Irig Pro still the recommended interface for this or has something taken it's place
i.e. Irig HD or whatever?"

There were several recommendations at the time however due to life/lifestyle changes that were forced on me at the time I never got the chance to follow up.
Now I have a bit more time and space it's time for me got get back in the saddle and get set up properly so looking to see what options are available nowadays.

Cheers from sunny Aberdeen.

Wow, in 2014 I was still using the E-MU 1616 and the 1820.

Both have been sidelined for years, because of lack of Windows 10 support.

2 years ago, I started using a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6, as a portable interface into a Windows 10 laptop, with a dual core processor and 8 gb of RAM. It's been working fine, but I tried using it to record a podcast for a friend, and ran into complications trying to connect and use more than 2 mics.

I recently switched to a used Presonus 1818VSL, and it's been working very well. I've recorded a 6 piece brass ensemble, a couple of opera singers with keyboard accompaniment, a 6 guest podcast panel, and everything's running really smooth.

At home, I'm using a Tascam FW1882 (firewire). Even though it's technically not supported on Windows 10, with the appropriate firewire drivers, it stills works great. :)

For all of my multi-track recording, I'm using an older version of Cubase 4.5, which I haven't been compelled to upgrade yet.

Interfaces I own:

UA Apollo Quad (Silver FW800) > got it the first week it got out
- Driver were Super unstable , they were crash fiesta at first but they got better
- Plugins are fantastic.
- Use it now at work mainly for reverb and FX

MOTU 1248 > Now my main home studio unit
- Sound is superb ( prefer it over my Apollo )
- Flexibility is incredible
- MOTU drivers have always been super stable for me
- AVB !
- Can be used as a Live console with an added router and an iPhone/iPad , the app works really well

MOTU Ultralite AVB > in my bass rack
- A very flexible and complete unit for the price/size
- MOTU drivers have always been super stable for me
- AVB !
- Can be used as a Live console with an added router and an iPhone/iPad , the app works really well

MOTU HD192 & 2408mk3 PCI based kit
- Has been my main kit since 2003/2004
- I keep it because I wouldn't get much $$$$ out of it in the used market and gives me extra AD/DA just in case....

I've been using the (old) Steinberg MR816s for many years with mixed results. On the positive side, they sound great. On the negative side, they run on firewire and Steinberg's customer support is atrociously bad (as in nonexistent). Steinberg's driver support is also appalling as they bricked the MRs for OS last year by not providing updated drivers!

My MRs started acting up a few months back, probably as a result of a Windows update to the firewire coding. After beating my head on a wall for months, I finally bit the proverbial bullet and bought an RME UFX+.

I can't say enough good things about the RME. Works flawlessly. Their TotalMix software works really well once you wrap your head around it. Their customer support is excellent - as in (unlike Steinberg) callbacks the same day with an actual ability to fix issues!

I have my old MR816s connected via ADAT, so now everything just works (although the MRs won't change sample frequency/bitrate without being connected via Firewire to a computer running their old software - so I just use them at 48/24).

Super impressed with the RME interface. And their reputation for maintaining driver support makes me far more confident that this was a great purchase.

I am using a Behringer XR18 which defacto is a smal X32 a digital mixer, Works perfect for me on a 2012 Imac. And it gives me 18 in/out. It's very flexible as you can modify the internal routing completely.
Nice plus are the Midas preamps.
I also use it as mixer for gigs & with 6 AUX out you can easily create a proper monitor mix.

I recently picked up a Steinberg UR44C. I've seen some of the complaints about the UR44 installation requiring elicenser. That wasn't an issue for me, since I already own, and have recently updated my Cubase 4.5 to Cubase 11.

I'm using it primarily to record interviews and performances for podcasts. I recently recorded a string quartet, micing each instrument individually. Because I have the power in the laptop I'm using, and the disk space, I record at 64 bit & 192khz (Cubase 11 allows that set up). I have a much easier time editing my audio files.

Own a Behringher BEHRINGER UMC204HD U PHORIA and BEHRINGER UMC404HD U PHORIA.
They work great with both Intel and M1 Macs. No Driver required coreAudio compliant, coreMIDI compliant.
On M1 I have almost zero latency at 128 samples and it works great at 64 and 32 samples with Ableton Live. AL with M1 oddily performs better with less CPU if less samples. Direct Monitor is possible with a dedicated Mix Knob.

They also have an Insert (Y Cable) on every channel.

I was referring to this remark:

"So far its been a royal pain in the butt - For some reason Steinberg requires an "e-Licencer" just to run its UR44 DSP Mixer with the Guitar amp sims - and the "e-Licencer" installer is a nightmare on OSX - completely prompts me to insert a Nuendo / Cubase USB "E-Licenser key stick - which is NOT supplied with the UR-44. ( and I have zero interest to Buy a E-Licenser Stick and install Cubase)"

From this post:
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=27079.msg197978#msg197978

Which clearly states the user had a problem installing the ELicenser. My ONLY point is, I didn't have a problem installing the ELicenser when setting up the UR44C, as it was already installed, BECAUSE I have CUBASE.

Im using a MOTU PCIE 424 card with 4 MOTU 24 i/o break-out boxes. Works great with Cubase 10.5 on W7. The drivers dont work well on W10 for me. Others say they do work so your mileage may vary. My main music machine is a 2011? HP Z800 dual hexcore and that with the MOTU lets me record with a buffer setting of 32 or 64 for very low real-time latency. Ive got three HP z800s that I use with Audio gridder and Vienna Ensemble Pro to offload processing duties for the CPU hungry VSTi's and it all works great. At some point Ill need to upgrade everything if I want a W10 compatible audio interface but money is tight now and what I have isnt broken.  STUDIO.jpg
