On another forum, someone asked me WHY V.2 is so desirable. That's when I found myself all but ignorant. :-[ So I dug into Roland.com & found the Additional Functions booklet, which is (probably) definitive. Since I wrote the following for their benefit, & though it's probably here (somewhere...) a dozen times over, I figure I might as well pass it along again.

Version 2 of the VG-88 software adds the following features.

:) the VG-88 can now detect whether a hex pickup is present & (if not) relies on the 1/4" input, giving access to most COSM features (amp, effects, tuner, etc.) except guitar models

:) the new version can receive bulk-dump data in the Play page

:) three more voice patches bring the total to 22
-- NYLONII adds more parameters than NYLON STRINGS
-- SITAR gives control over multiple parameters, particularly decay time & amount of bridge buzz
-- WAVE SYNTH provides basic synthesis (square or sawtooth) with control over AD & filter

:) however, caveat emptor: in the updated Patch List, these are marked as new --
NYLONII (1-4 26-4)
WAH DRV (2-1 27-1)

Also VG-88  V-Editor works ONLY with VG-88's that have been updated to "Version 2.0 firmware.

Older VG-88 firmware had different MIDI SYSEX data structure.

Oh, goes without saying! ;D V-Editor is a MAJOR selling point.

While I am frequently grateful to Roland for making some effort to archive their "legacy" reference materials -- moreso because they stopped requiring registration & login!! -- the old publications are scattered all over the place. I never know whether to look at the product's page under the Support tab, which sometimes contains items not found in the general Support area. And I found the VG-88 Turbo Start card (a two-sided sheet, apparently meant for dealer display) under Support Documents rather than with the manuals (like the v.2 Quick Start -- which, oddly, is the v.1 QS + the v.2 Additional Functions booklet).

Another list for another day. ;) But I might as well link the v.2 "Stuff To Know" card --
