Since getting my triple play working well I've been really happy with my setup of a macbook running VST's and guitar rig for amp/effects modeling.

I'd like to experiment with taking the hex outputs from my 13 pin guitars via DIY portable breakout straight into my macbook and processing each string separately in terms of EQ etc but am looking for an audio interface that meets the following requirements:

1) Has 6 mono (or 3 stereo) analog inputs)
2) Is fairly portable and easy to carry around.
3) is preferably USB bus powered.

Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations (besides String port )

You will want to avoid the "Bus Powered" interfaces. Never heard one yet that had good dynamic range.

I like my recently acquired Focusrite Scarlett 18i6

Good low latency , 8 analog inputs, 8 ch ADAT Optical Input, Works with Ipad without need for a powered USB Hub too.

Although if you start using a 13 pin break out box (like the ones listed below) you will prefer using an audio interface that has at least 6 inputs and 6 outputs - as this allows "re-amping" of your GR-55 / VG-99 rig.
Like the MOTU 828MK3

Plug a GK-3 equipped guitar into a 13 pin break out box (like the ones listed below), Record 6 tracks of dry guitar in your DAW - one track per string, rewind, then rewire the break out box to feed your GR-55 / VG-99 rig - change patches to find tones which suit the song, after recording all your guitar parts.

Obtain more tones than you own, by rewinding, then re-overdubbing using yet a different  GR-55 / VG-99 patch for each recording pass.

I second avoiding the bus powered units. 5v DC just isn't enough to provide good headroom.

I just got a Scarlet 18i8 and it is an awesome mobile recording interface. The drivers are tip notch and work well on Win7-64 and Win8. It supports 8 in 8 out plus 10 more through digital expansion options.
