http://thisisartmusic.com - Art Webb of This is ART here. Basically I'm telling each note on the bass to "do" something inside of Ableton Live. Imagine turning your TV on with a remote control, simple. Now imagine recording a TV show on your remote, a little more complex. There are millions of things to tell Ableton Live to "do"- just imagine mastering this technology. You could DJ a whole show using a bass guitar! Welcome to my journey.

Bulk of Ableton Live Guitar users migrate to the Yamaha MFC-10, because it provides a better "mix" of MIDI commands suitable to control Ableton Live
http://usa.yamaha.com/products/music-production/midi-controllers/mfc10/?mode=model

Of course a different MIDI pedal with a robust MIDI command set should be equivalent.

KMI Softstep

Discover the Ableton Live guitar effects template included in the SoftStep foot controller software. Danny Piccione shows you how to take advantage of the SoftStep's pressure and incremental control features. The SoftStep template is made from Ableton's built in audio effects including a wah-wah filter, overdrive, chorus, reverb and a live looper effect.

Go to www.keithmcmillen.com for more details, photos and videos featuring SoftStep.

ClyphX is a MIDI Remote Script for Live 8.2.2 or later that provides an extensive list of Actions related to controlling different aspects of Live. These Actions can be accessed via X-Triggers (Session View Clips, Arrange View Locators or MIDI Controls). Each X-Trigger can trigger a single Action or a list of Actions.

As an example, a simple Action might be OVER, which will toggle Overdub on/off. A more complex Action List might mute Tracks 1 – 2, unmute and arm Track 4, turn the 2nd Device on Track 4 on and launch the selected Clip on Track 4: 1/MUTE ON; 2/MUTE ON; 4/MUTE OFF; 4/ARM ON; 4/DEV2 ON; 4/PLAY

ClyphX also includes a component called Macrobat that adds new functionality to Racks in Live such as the ability to control Track mixer parameters or send MIDI messages from Rack Macros.

ClyphX also includes extra preference options for changing some of Live's default behaviors such as the ability to choose to have Track's automatically Arm upon selection.

Clyphx has been a godsend for setting up more complex actions in Live to be controlled by footpedals. Highly recommended!

Just wanted to inform that Lemur Live Control 2 for Ableton Live 8 and 9 has been released and is available from the link below for existing Lemur iOs owners.

To V or not to V: That is the question.

Wow, this looks fantastic!  All I need now is a Win8 version of Lemur, so I can run the Lemur/control interface layer and Ableton itself on the same Win8 tablet.  Poking around their website now to see whether this already exists...

Update:  Googling for "Lemur for Windows 8" and surfing from there has turned up some interesting discussions and products:

http://forum.watmm.com/topic/76636-windows-8-touch-screen-tabletslaptops-music-possibilities/
http://www.tangiblex.net/tangilblex-liveset/
http://www.gesturespark.com/

Update #2:  I was optimistic for a little while there, but the search has already kind of petered out.  No Win8 Lemur, GestureSpark is still in development (there isn't even a beta yet), and tangiblex looks like fun, but maybe even a little too "out of the box" for my immediate needs.

Thanks, Steve.  That is a well-written article - lots of good points.  Unfortunately, it primarily describes the void of touchscreen music software solutions on Win8, and all of the reasons that void exists right now.

I started playing around with a javascript library called MIDIbridge yesterday, which lets you code MIDI I/O in simple browser apps.  Who knows, maybe I'll just wind up developing something of my own.

What would you guys consider the best happy medium between controlling Live and a V system (VB-99 in particular) with one pedal?  I mean triggering pre-recorded beats, recording loops, and changing/controlling V effects and presets.  I'm really thinking something like the liquid foot or gordius where I have a ton of foot switches to assign to different functions. Am I barking up the wrong tree?

I didn't read through the links so this may have been mentioned, but I was playing around with live 9 over the holidays to use as a looper and found that I needed SelectedTrackControl - another midi remote script.

http://stc.wiffbi.com/

STC allows me to control recording into individual cells with an MFC-10. I'll have to explore ClyphX and see what it can do.

8)

I have been looking deep into the PUSH .

I was reviewing several possible expression pedals to hook into my
T.C.Helicon Voice Live 3X ( which just died @ 90 days old  ::) ) and
bought a Source Audio Hot Hand 3 ring with the base unit to hook to
my VL3X's expression pedal input for X ( up and down ) pedal control .

After reviewing the HH3 I saw it had a USB dongle to hook into your
computer and get not only the X axis but also the Y&Z parameter control .

I'm temped big time to be able to re trigger my recorded/looped midi/audio
tracks and twist/mash them up . This gives the performer the power to be the
director of his own works and re orchestrate them to video and trigger
events/FX/ with the HH3 .

I feel I will not resist this one - I am weak . I have the Scarlett 6i6 arriving
maybe today - this will take the sting out of not having the VL3X to use with
the HH3 . The Ableton Live Lite along with the ProTools First software will be
an interesting (  ;D maybe not  :( ) experience with the HH3 .
