Are the ferrite collars on the included 13 pin cable available for retrofitting older cables or is there something different about the latest gk cable? It does seem to make a difference in signal to noise.

Has anyone tried using their 99 without the ferrite?

When I first plugged my axe in, I was left scratching my head for the longest time. I was getting the craziest signal into the unit. Strings showing up in the wrong position, gk vol making noise each time i turned it, weird static, etc, etc.

Turned out it was just the cable. The 99 must generate a LOT of interference.

If I can get hold of a spare ferrite core, I'm chucking it onto my planet waves GKcable. It's a much nicer cable; more manageable length and it has the clip to keep it rolled up neatly. Always wise to have a spare anyway.

BTW, anyone else find it a bitch to roll their GK cables up. Was thinking seriously at one stage about getting a hosereel-type contraption for it, but it would just be one more thing to lug and would look rather stupid on stage.

Hey Bbach,
I'm not a fan of the packaging of the GK cables. I've resorted to using cable ties and binding the cables in a circular fashion as to force them to roll up like a standard 1/4 inch cable. It seems to work after being left like that for a few weeks.  Roland should package the GK cables like all other instrument cables. Ya know.

I use these:

Planet Waves 10' 13-PIN MIDI CABLE (PW-MD13-10)
http://www.shopatron.com/product/part_number=PW-MD13-10/421.0.16813.16090.16820.16827.0

Planet Waves 20' 13-PIN MIDI CABLE (PW-MD13-20)
http://www.shopatron.com/product/part_number=PW-MD13-20/421.0.16813.16090.16820.16827.0

Planet Waves 30' 13-PIN MIDI CABLE (PW-MD13-30)
http://www.shopatron.com/product/part_number=PW-MD13-30/421.0.16813.16090.16820.16827.0

They truly are the best - typical Planet Waves high Quality - they ship precoiled in the ideal 8" circle, (not all crushed up like the factory Roland ones that resemble Car Antenna extension cable packaging!)
Just like other premium Planet Waves cables, their GK13 cables also have a built-in elastic cable tie, 13 Gold plated contacts. These are the only 13 pin cables authorized by Brian Moore Guitars.

Oh and they are guaranteed for Life!

I use the 10 footers at home and in the studio (shorter ones actually proove to be more reliable too) - and get em before they are gone - $12/ea (buy 2!)

So do you take the ferrite collar off of the Roland cable and just place it on the Planet Waves cable or do you not need it with their cables?

I find I do not need the Ferrite core with the Planet Waves cables -  but then I'm typically using the VG-99 at my home studio, not on a stage full of wireless mics. But Yes - they are MUCH higher quality than Roland's cables.

The real reason the VG-99 includes a Ferrite core is so the VG-99 can pass FCC regulations, and not upset TV/Radio reception in other gear nearby. This is in part Due to the VG-99's plastic case, and higher internal DSP Clock speeds than prior models - its  pushing 49MHz for the distributed internal MCLK system clock, shared between three DSPs. This falls within the range of VHF TV broadcast channels in many parts of the world.

Basically it translates like this - if you fire up the VG-99 in the living room  in New Zealand where others are viewing over the air broadcast TV, you might upset the local TV reception quality if you remove the VG-99 ferrite core, as the GK cable acts like a  big antenna, radiating 49MHz square waves everywhere.  In the USA 49 MHz is Cordless home Telephones.

It also means if you use one of those cheap Nady VHF Wireless Mics in your band - its highly recommended you  install the ferrite core on every type of GK-13 pin cable used with the VG-99. Next time you are having stage problems with the Wireless Mics - turn off the VG-99  and see if that helps.  Get a few spare Ferrite Cores. Jameco.com is another source.

Steve,
Great answer,Thanks you!

49Mz is right next to channel 2 here in the US.
Most have cable TV now so it is not an issue.
I am a ham operator and used to transmit several hundred watts in the 50Mz region.
I would get complaints from the FCC about breaking into peoples TV sets miles from my house!

The VG-99 also has a ferrite core inside the unit right beyond the 13-pin jack.  Talk about overkill!

It would not surprise me if a large reason for the delivery delay of the VG-99, was due to making last minute corrections to meet FCC regulations.

Did you order them direct from Planet Waves using the links Sustainiac gave us? I was about to order and I'd hate to get shot down on that purchase.

Oh yeah... do we know which cables lengths are still available?

Yes that is where I ordered.
They sent an Email today saying it was discontinued, so I call and got the same info from them.

I am bummed as the 10fter was the best for what I do.

philflood

I ordered three from the link yesterday, and it got confirmed and charged.

baranger1

Hope you guys get them!
I did get an order confirm but a day or two later a cancel notice.
