My DAW is running Win 7.1 so I suspect it will be fine for a couple years, but it's a shame to see Sonar go ...

BTW: While on my rant I will add that GM killed Saab. Thanks goodness they didn't own enough of Subaru to take them down too. :-)

That would be Isuzu
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isuzu_Motors

As a former Opel/GM/Isuzu employee, I have to correct this:  1. Saab killed itself, GM didn't even own it when it finally went down.  I was a Purchasing manager, and can't forget one time when I was at the Saab assembly line in Trollhätten, stunned to see workers fooling around and smoking instead of working on cars- and no, it wasn't break time.  There were a lot of good people there, many of whom went on to Volvo, but Saab was at the wheel for its own demise.  2. My last "GM" job was as Vice President-Purchasing for the European arm of the GM/Isuzu Diesel JV- Isuzu is/was great at commercial vehicles, but most assuredly not for passenger cars (for anything outside of the mainstream like Toyota & co. Japanese styling is very much acquired taste).  If you look at the Wikipedia article, Isuzu profited from the GM sales and support base in the US.  GM profited from Isuzu's diesel knowhow for many years; for a long time the bonds were primarily financial, and GM only stepped in with higher control when Isuzu was hemorraghing so badly that it became life-threatening.  We turned a lot around, at the same time regaining diesel knowhow through the shortlived JV with Fiat; Isuzu turned toward increased diesel cooperation with Toyota, the IP issues between GM and Toyota were problematical, so GM and Isuzu parted company (and I decided to quit the automobile industry and become a musician  :o).  Isuzu is still around, still can't get passenger cars right, not even in Japan, but their footprint is in commercial.  GM made a lot of mistakes, IMHO their bankruptcy was the fault of the CEO at the time Rick Wagoner, who was a finance guy(!).  Surely there were a lot of questionable decisions in the past, but from front-line experience I can firmly state that Saab and Isuzu were/are the masters of their own destiny.

Back to the subject!  My first real CD productions in 2008/9 were done on a Boss BR 1600 CD.  After that I produced several CDs using a version of Sonar that came with my Roland Sonic Cell, which I really enjoyed and wasn't interested in changing until I got a Presonus Studiolive 16.0.2 and started using Studio One.  Haven't upgraded (yet) or changed, as I mainly do simple grassroots audio recording with minimal MIDI.  I always did see Sonar as a viable alternative, I guess it isn't anymore.....
Take what you need, put back a bit more, leave the place behind you better than it was before :-)

I agree that it would be great if they released it as open-source.   It might actually help their name, to some extent.

Henry won't allow that, he has already monetized many Gibson owned Patents as Patent Liens"  - which essentially transfers Gibson owned patents over to Bank of America in exchange for $$$ . Henry will make money selling or mortgaging the Cakewalk patents to Bank of America

Giving it away isn't really an option.

We don't really know the details behind cakewalk or gibsons financials, however...

If they are in hoc as deep as its rumored, then giving away valuable intellectual property for free could be a serious breach of fiduciary duties.

Gibson needs every penny, tangible or otherwise, it can muster.

They are in dire straits if you think about it. They killed cakewalk because they didnt want the overhead of their salaries.

Part of fault also lies with cakewalk themselves.
They chose to keep a user friendly security protocol, and it made the software much easier to pirate.
Lifetime subscriptions was also a poor business decision.

How it works
https://www.finnegan.com/en/insights/security-interests-in-intellectual-property.html
QuoteIntellectual property owners seeking loans may find that their most valuable property for use as collateral is their trademarks, copyrights, or patents. In fact, a bank that provides capital or credit to an I.P. owner will most likely require that the I.P. owner's intellectual property assets be pledged as collateral. Most banks will insist on obtaining a security interest in the I.P. owner's trademarks, copyrights, and patents using a security agreement that greatly favors the bank and may severely restrict the I.P. owner's ability to alienate any of its intellectual property assets in the normal course of business.

For a lender to obtain priority over other parties who might have interests in the I.P. owner's trademarks, copyrights, and patents, the lender must perfect its interest in the intellectual property. One perfects a security interest by filing the right documents in the right place. The perfection of security interests generally is governed by the Uniform Commercial Code (U.C.C.) as adopted by the states. However, the ownership of trademarks, copyrights, and patents generally is governed by federal law. As a result, uncertainty has arisen as to which body of law—federal or state—governs the perfection of security interests in trademarks, copyrights, and patents. This article first examines the two bodies of law and then recommends procedures and considerations for perfecting security interests in intellectual property and drafting security agreements.

Overloud Welcomes Cakewalk Customers
Here at Overloud we heard the news about the closing of Cakewalk.

We have been collaborating with Cakewalk employees for a long time to develop Sonar special versions of our plugins. And we are very sorry to hear about this sudden closing of the company, as we know that many of the guys there have now lost their job.

We know that this is a bad news for customers too, for their DAWs stopping its development and technological growth.
As plugin developers we are side by side with Sonar customers who invested their resources in this DAW solution which sadly inevitably will be going to disappear.

So we are unlocking the Cakewalk custom version of our products: TH3 Cakewalk, BREVERB Cakewalk and REmatrix Solo, to let them run unconstrained into other DAWs.

Each Sonar registered customer will be eligible to unlock the above three plugins to the unconstrained version, for free.

We are sure that, as a Sonar customer, you will take advantage of this opportunity which will grant you to continue to use the same plugins in a new DAW.

While I'm still whining into my beer, I thought I'd share:

This came free when I bought my first PC MIDI cable - one of those joystick-port-to-5-pin adapters.

Note the copyright.  Greg Hendershott frequented the Cakewalk support forums for many years, personally helping folks out, taking input & using forum interaction in part as direction for prioritizing features & bugs.  He wrote his farewell letter when Cake was bought out by Roland a while back:

Gibson also shut down Neat Microphones recently so I wonder if there might still be a few more to close up.

Interesting thread.  I give Craig some props for weighing in, knowing full well that there would be incoming fire.

It is true that there were some longstanding bugs/limitations.  I haven't been on the Cake forum in YEARS and the bugs described in the thread are the same ones discussed way back.

Gulp.  Testimonials from happy customers - NOT.  If Gibson was trying to stir up ill will, they succeeded.

I'm guessing I'm safe for some time to come in terms of continued use of Sonar X3.  However, starting to forward look and thinking about using Pro Tools more and more.  That got me to thinking I could take this as an opportunity to simply start using my Mac for music.  Any experiences using Pro Tools on a Mac?  Is Logic Pro a better option for the Mac?

Apparently Gibson recently terminated Craig Anderton's contract as Tech evangelist
http://www.craiganderton.com/about.html
QuoteAfter a 4.5 year stint at Gibson (which was only supposed to last a year, but you know how it is), Craig is back to his former gig of consulting to companies, doing workshops, and writing books. Several books will drop in 2018, along with his latest musical project, "Joie De Vivre."

https://www.sweetwater.com/insync/gibson-brands-ceases-the-development-of-cakewalk-products/
QuoteSONAR users can breathe easy — you're not being hung out to dry. Cakewalk's servers will continue to operate for the foreseeable future. You'll still have access to all of your online assets, and your software will continue to work the same way it always has. That being said, there will be no further software updates.

If you have any questions, feel free to call your Sales Engineer.
