There is way too much smoke for there not to be fire. These components are not only convincing, they're believable.

iFixyouri sent to 9to5 Mac

The site iFixYourI sent 9to5 Mac the first round of pictures of the black iPhone. With a black backcase, and a black frame. What's more interesting still, is the black coloring of the metal frame of the device in the picture.

9to5 Mac

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fzagg-blog.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fcommunity%2Fblog%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2012%2F05%2F9to5mac-iphone-rear-case.jpg&hash=78c7a1a406f6ce349764ff0ede7df703b78e25fe)

9to5 Mac is raking in the pictures,

and has already amassed a collection of which even The Loop would be jealous. The black back case from iFixYouri wasn't the last.
(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fzagg-blog.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fcommunity%2Fblog%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2012%2F05%2F9to5mac-iphone-5-case-leak-front.jpg&hash=184dfdf4fac83a8b045330b376ece67eddc0b0d7)
They have a picture of what would be the next-generation iPhone front glass, as well as the frame of the device.

This adds to our report in which we claimed the new iPhone would sport a taller screen with the same width. Sources say that the new iPhone's interface will be redesigned to take advantage of the newly available screen real estate. The screen resolution is said to be 1136 x 640, with a screen size of 3.999 inches (diagonally)

UBreakiFix

It didn't stop with the iFixYouri pics. The uBreakiFix pictures are just as impressive and convincing. The aluminum backplate looks very nice – an Apple-esque design for sure.
(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fzagg-blog.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fcommunity%2Fblog%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2012%2F05%2Fiphone_5_rear_shell_white_1-500x681.jpg&hash=c940aa6f058c48e1e1d55dfd18cf33a0c6119b4d)

I think that the pictures paint a simple picture:

Taller iPhone with a bigger screen.
Aluminum backplate (potentially unibody with the frame)
Headphone jack on the bottom of the phone
New, smaller connection adaptor (confirmed this will be a new mini 20 pin "Dock Port" - backward compatibel with Micro USB Charges - as mandated by the new European Envoronmental laws

These are changes we won't know if we like or hate until we have the device in hand. Let's hope it's not a Fall launch like the iPhone 4S. That would be quite the wait.

Basically this translates that the 30 pin dock connector will soon be obsolete - and rumor is  the 2013 "iPad 4" will also change to the "new" proprietary mini 20 pin port (backward compatible with micro USB) as seen on the new iPhone 5.

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fzagg-blog.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fcommunity%2Fblog%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2012%2F05%2Fiphone_5_rear_shell_white_bottom.jpg&hash=72a26d3d7c5f42a25f1fcf0b8938c6873ab8a6c7)
This will render all your third party I/O gear, MIDI Adapters, Audio interfaces (Fostex AR-4i, IK iRig, Alesis I/O Dock, Mackie DL1608 iPad Mixer ) which use the 30 pin dock connector obsolete by this time next year.

Someone surely will make a 30pin to new mini20 pin "adapter dongle" - but its going to be a bit kludgy.

Same holds true for Firewire - this is the final year to buy a computer with a Firewire port.

Looks like they copied a Samsung Galaxy S2 design which is already a generation old in the Android world. LOL! The Galaxy S3 launches in 4 days. The yet to be announced Galaxy S4 and numerous competitive models will be out by the time we see the i5 ;)

Apple already got (bought and paid for?) a temporary court injunction against the Samsung Nexus last week....now that we see that the i5 is waaaay behind on launch and specs, its no wonder they need the courts to hinder competition so they don't fall further back! Apple's marketshare will continue to slip as they litigate themselves to death against the relentless onslaught of rapid hardware development by multiple vendors and open source OS competition.

Apple does make a nice phone but there anti-competitive behavior is repulsive. Hey, if you can't beat 'em, sue 'em....RIGHT????

NAH! Viva comptition!

Actually I agree with you.

I'm waiting for a TI OMAP5 Quad core Android 4.1 Jelly Bean phone with the new low latency audio. I hate the closed IOS on my IPhone that restricts me to using only one OSX computer to access / change / manage my files and forces me to use iTunes or have a separate file transfer host app on my computer to wifi access my files. It's a royal pain to locate any of my own original work on my iPhone.

I love everything else I use the iPhone for. Miso Guitar Strobe tuner , Calibrate a PA with iTestMic,
And camera.
If I need to record an audio note, I tend to use the iPhone camera in Video mode, simply because the Camera Pics Folder is the only accessible Folder when connecting the iPhone via USBto my work machine.

They hyped that IOS 5 would break the dependency on requiring a PC to manage the phone. It was a false bit of advertising.
Maybe I just need to Jailbreak my iPhone.

Wow...sounds like a headache for such a simple part of using a device....file handling. They got so many thing right and then botch the simple stuff!

On Android, you can turn on Wifi, open a file manager app, and read/write to shared network drives. My studio pc has 20 TB of storage....all accessible via my phone. Dead simple.

I have the Google (Samsung Galaxy) Nexus phone. Its the official dev model for Android so I got JB 4.1 last week but wont flash it until I have a few hours to play. The Quadcores don't support LTE (yet) so we're waiting. The Galaxy S3 is Quadcore in Europe already and we got the Dualcore model at 1.8ghz. They say its still pretty fast. My GNex is OC'd to 1.65ghz already so I'll wait for the next round also.

12ms latency on JB should unleash some audio apps pretty soon.

If I had an iPhone, I'd have to jailbreak it on day 1 or I'd go nuts. I move files constantly.

On iPhone I have 320 apps installed, and for most each app has a separate "host app" that must be run on the Host machine, to get your files Off the iPhone.

It's a real pain for me.

By comparison on my Android Tablet, I can connect it to Any PC Mac via USB and then the Android looks like another drive and I can use Finder on Mac or Explorer on WinPC to access copy , move  Any file.

That's the best method for me.

The Iphone 5 Apple Lightning I/O connector no longer has any analog audio or video connections.

So this forces the purchase of a future Lightning to 30 pin Dock Adapter  - but Apple states this will not support Ipod Control or Video.

To me the biggest annoyance with the Apple Lightning I/O connector on the new Iphone 5  is
the deletion of a direct HDMI Output cable path.

Frankly I'm very underwhelmed with iPhone5, with its 3 steps forward
(fast A6 processor and larger Display) 2 steps backward, and a huge
penalty for A/V Content creators.

I use my old 30pin dock to HDMI cable in hotel rooms all the time, to
review and watch concert footage i film for my monthly cable access TV
show I co-produce.

In fact a refurbished Motorola LapDock works very well as a mobile
battery powered HDMI Monitor for iphone 4 - or Mac Mini users.

http://www.cnx-software.com/2012/06/page/9/ (http://www.cnx-software.com/2012/06/page/9/)

As it stands now - looks like with iPhone5  - users are forced to buy
and carry the "Apple TV" and use Airplay if they wish to watch video
shot with an iPhone 5 while on the road.

At this Hour (July 2012) - Apple has stated that in the coming months various new
Lightning adapters will emerge - but these will be basically the same
active cable technology as the DisplayLink USB to HDMI Adapters - with
more latency than what exists with iphone 4

To be honest, I might wait for a spring 2013 OMAP5 based Android 4.1
Jelly Bean phone.

Android 4.1 jelly bean has much lower audio processing latency compared to prior Android versions, and
gives IOS some competition for music creators.

The Samsung Note 2 looks interesting to me and is on my radar.

The Galaxie Note is out now - but if you wait until October, the
"Samsung Galaxie Note 2" will arrive and that runs Android 4.1 Jelly
Bean  - which is the new superior low audio processing latency that
mobile musicians have been waiting months for.
[GALAXY Note II] First Hands-on Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DcgZum8M1o#ws)

I should also remind that while the Galaxie S3 is getting the most attention  as the direct competitor to iphone 5, the version of the Samsung Galaxie S3 that ships in North America is a different phone than ships in the rest of the world. The USA Version has a slower processor.

QuoteSamsung's announcement also confirmed that the North American version of the phone will use a dual-core Snapdragon processor instead of the quad-core Tegra 3 that's in the international model.

I saw that too, but "Coming Soon" means "several months from now"  = Feb 2013.

And watch that those Lightning to HDMI Out adapters will be priced more than Thunderbolt cables.

By contrast most Android phones include micro HDMI Out Jack standard. And dont require a + $50 adapter.

Well it now looks like the iPhone5 is released with a relatively slow processor and small screen by new smartphone standards. It is barely equal to a Galaxy S3 which has ben out for 3 months. My 10 month old Samsung Galaxy Nexus has better specs and performance thanks to the Android community's open source support. I've been on Jelly Bean and over-clocked to 1.8Ghz on a dual-core processor with no issues for over a month. This ability to enhance my device with nightly updates is simple and amazing!

The next wave of smartphones will outpace the iPhone5 n performance by leaps and bounds within the next 3-4 months. Look for Apple to have an initial bump as their loyal but shrinking customer base flocks to the stores. Android will continue to grow steadily despite frivolous litigation. People are waking up to the advantages of non-proprietary software and hardware. The competition is heating up and Apple will have to eventually change their marketing model or suffer. Too bad because they have a lot to offer but would prefer to sue others that offer open solutions with better interoperability with the rest of the computing world.

It will be interesting to see how these smartphone competitors manuever as the market matures.

The problem is: the faster the processor the higher the battery consumption.

The newer android phones have strange issues - I deal with this every day at my day gig.  The famous one is the droid razr with its habit of outrunning its charger which I've seen on two different phones of the same type now.

The biggest problem I have with droids though is enterprise email integration but that's not really an issue for this system but the vast majority of droid phones have problems staying connected to exchange activesync email systems in my experience.

I jumped on the iPhone wagon about three years ago because, at the time, it was the only smartphone with a UI and web browser that weren't batsh*t insane.  Unfortunately, every thing else about Apple software is - at least to my own PC-addled brain.  I just can't seem to drink the KoolAid no matter how much I try.  To this day I can not wrap my head around iTunes, for instance: how to safely backup files (to my own satisfaction; not to the satisfaction of an Apple programmer) and get them the hell off the phone.  Every "sync" is a roll of the dice, i.e. how does the ambiguous verbiage on screen correllate with Apple's perception of how computers are supposed to work?

Files have been lost, hair has been torn out, and worst of all... so much time has been wasted.

The iPhone 3 and 4 were essentially the devil I knew (even if the 4 was a devil that would disconnect my calls were I so bold as to, you know, touch it) and I'm not really looking forward to researshing something new, discovering too late that my favorite app has no equivalent on another platform, etc.  But I'm starting to think it's Android or Windows 7 Phone time for me.  I'll keep my iPad for TouchOSC et al, but I need my phone to be a little more straightforward than Apple prefers.

(Of course, all of this is a race against time - with each passing month it seems like the Microsoft OS paradigms become more and more like the Apple ones, whereas I'd rather see it all moving in the opposite direction.)

The facts about Apple's iPhone 5 Lightning Dock Connector Adapters

14th September 2012 by Matthew Panzarino

There has been a considerable amount of fear, uncertainty and doubt sown about Apple's new Lightning Dock Connector adapters, introduced alongside the iPhone 5. There are three adapters that do a couple of different things, along with two more on the way.

I reached out to Apple and a spokesperson clarified several things that had become sticking points and topics for misinformation. Just for reasons involving my own sanity, I'm going to lay down the facts surrounding these adapters, perhaps helping others that may be confused by their capabilities.

There are three adapters currently available, two of which are a bit special:

    Lighting to 30-pin adapter - $29
Lightning to 30-pin adapter with cable – $39

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.thenextweb.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2012%2F09%2FScreen-Shot-2012-09-13-at-9.51.12-PM-520x254.jpg&hash=2baaad8af98e36a7f27fa3cb6fbbd6702fd15278)
The facts about Apples iPhone 5 Lightning Dock Connector Adapters

These two adapters are a bit pricier than you'd think they would be, but that's for good reason. There are actually chips in the dongles that enable several features that would be unavailable without them. Much of the reasons for this have to do with the fact that there are more and varied pins in the original dock connector (30) than there are in the new one (9). These are not just bits of plastic and metal.

The things that the dock connector adapters let you do:

Analog audio output to stereos, docks and anything else that uses a 30-pin cable of any sort to send audio.
USB audio output. If you've got a car stereo that takes a digital input over a wired-in USB cable, you're still fine with this adapter.
    Syncing and charging, of course.

The things that they do not let you do:

Utilize iPod Out, a relatively little used feature that allows transference of the iPod or iPhone's music controls to an external screen or buttons, like the one in a car or on some home audio systems. BMW was an Apple partner for this feature.
Video out. There are separate adapters coming for that.

Then there are two adapters on the way:

    Lightning to HDMI – $?
    Lightning to VGA – $?

These two adapters will let you send video out over either HDMI or VGA to projectors or other equipment. Now that Apple devices almost all have AirPlay, this isn't as big of a deal, but it definitely can be for those without an Apple TV or who are in a corporate IT environment and just want to plug into presentation equipment. There still isn't information about whether or not the HDMI adapter will send audio and video, but the current Digital AV Adapter does, so it should too.

Then there is an adapter to satisfy regulations surrounding the use of Micro-USB for charging and sync in the European Union:

Lightning to Micro USB – €15

That adapter doesn't do anything but charge and sync, that's it.

So, I hope this helps a bit as a cheat sheet for those confused about the functions of these adapters and which ones they really need. If you still have questions, check out this article from Mike Rose at TUAW and this one from Dan Frakes at Macworld or feel free to drop them in the comments below and I'll try to answer them at some point.

Same experience here. Maybe we are both overthinking this - it all works pretty well if you don't care what the file names are or where they are and you buy all of your tunes from apple (none of which is true for me).  :-)

I'm having a hard time finding a review by someone with a broad experience if current smartphone capabilities and both Mac and PC use. Everything so far seems to be from the Apple CoolAid drinking crowd who have a very low expectation of what should be possible with current technology.

I do know that Apple employs various blog and tech writers to masquerade as unbiased users. This army if writers declared the Iphone5 as the winner in comparisons to Samsung's S3 even though the iPhone5 was admitedly unavailable at the time. They excused the smaller screen, lack of servicable battery, no expandable memory, still no Flash support, on and on...Amazing clairvoyance!

Apple marketing is trully a well oiled machine!

Did I just read that there are numerous $30 adapters necessary? Sounds expensive and proprietary.

Long live open architectures, software, and standards!

2 of the standard Lightning cables from Apple arrived today.  First thing I noticed is that the Lightning plugs are SMALL.  Pinky fingernail size.  The contact points on the plug are so tiny, it is hard to probe them with a multimeter.  Also, they are tough and look really good.  This is not a cable that is going to break easily.  It is a fraction of the width of a dock plug and isn't going to snap off or have weird problems with locking, and so on.

Removing the plastic shell around the plug reveals a two piece metal crimp surrounding the solder area of the plug, as well as some injected silicone rubber cushioning.  This plug is built like a tank, it is armored.  Modders are going to want to give up on the idea of building their own charge cables/CLAS cables from scratch for this, until a DIY version of this plug surfaces.  I don't expect a DIY version of this plug will go for that much, despite how pretty they are, since Alibaba.com shows that these cables are going for 20 cents to $2 each at wholesale (Apple is making a killing here).    The amount of force required to remove the crimp is insane, it is really on there.  I got it off without completely destroying the plug, and was greeted with a generous coating of epoxy.  Scraping all that off reveals a tiny PCB with the 4 wires of the USB cable connected to it.  The PCB extends into the end of the cable, where I'm guessing the traces split off and cross to allow the two-sideness of the connector.

For modders, we have a tiny ~32awg pair of green and white wires which are for data.  I'll post the exact specs when I get home.  There is a 26awg red power wire for V+.  V- duties are done by the cable's shield, which has several easily accessible drain wires for soldering to the plug of your choice.  It is trivial to chop the end on this, strip it with a 14awg stripper to get the shield and jacket off, then, strip & solder these wires to a USB plug or micro USB plug if you wanted to make your own custom version of the long and annoying stock Lightning cable.

I will post the exact pinouts soon.  For now, let's look at it this way: if you face the plug straight at you, the contacts facing up (and it should be the same on either side) are 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8.  Pin 1 is V- or shield, and it is connected to the shell of the plug on each side, so the power ground also serves to ground the shells of the cable ends together.  Pretty standard USB layout.  Pins 6 and 7 are the data pins (forget the exact configuration, will fix this in my next edit).  Here's where we get to the strangest thing about this.  Perhaps I just had a broken cable, but when the cable was fully intact, and afterwards, I tried to figure out where V+ connects to.  I had the V+ wire stripped and hooked up to the multimeter, and I probed the crap out of the Lightning plug.  No resistance, no continuity, to any of the pins on the Lightning plug.  I will keep at it but for now this is a really strange mystery.  The V+ wire is soldered to the little board inside the Lightning plug.  Where it goes from there inside the PCB that extends into the metal contact end of the Lightning plug is anyone's guess.  There does not appear to be any resistors or circuitry in this cable.  It is just a regular USB cord as far as I can tell, so far.  Except for this V+ problem.  I have a 2nd lightning cord I can test here in a little while.

Apple Authentication chips have been around for a while, and yes they are quite small. They have been a requirement for any product that directly attaches to an Apple IOS device.

But this seems to be the main point of the change to Lightning:

The Apple mFI developer program is the source for details

But in my mind, if a DAC is what you are after, might explore the new "USB Audio" standard that several new DAC products support. Apparently IPhone 4/ 4S/ 5 (and new Android devices like the S3) all support "USB Audio" which is now being used to describe the direct streaming of Audio via USB

There are a new category of DAC boxes with a USB Type A Host port - and these support "USB Audio":

Lightning Audio: Sonoma's GuitarJack Meets New iPads, iPhones, Via Adapter [Gallery]

by Peter Kirn

Okay, it's not as compact, but you can at least get input working with Apple's now-shipping Lightning adapter for 30-pin accessories and Sonoma's excellent GuitarJack.

Apple's mobile hardware offers some serious audio performance and a whole mess of apps to take advantage of it. But what it doesn't have is the ability to connect inputs and get high-quality sound. Basic mics will work via the built-in jack, but if you want really good sound and more flexibility, you need to connect external hardware. Previous accessories worked with the Apple Dock Connector.

I expect we'll shortly see new hardware with the Lightning Connector built in – the whole thing seems like an opportunity for third-party vendors to sell more accessories. But in the meantime, here's the latest from Sonoma WireWorks. One of our favorite audio adapters in fact works so long as you use Apple's Lightning-to-30-pin adapter cable, and we've got pictures from Sonoma along with official word as proof.

(Previously, more on this issue: iPhone 5: Audio Accessories Compatible; Some Require Adapters [IK, Line 6 Official Word])

The important thing about this interface is that its connection to your Apple gizmo is digital, using the digital connection on the device rather than going through the analog headset jack. (That analog connection is fine for things like headsets, but might be disappointing for creative audio work.)

While it's called "GuitarJack," the interface works with instruments and mics as well as guitar and bass. You get a 1/4? instrument, and 1/8? connections for stereo mic/line input and stereo line output.

Specs: input level control with 60 dB gain + 12 dB pad, Lo-Z and Hi-Z modes for working with guitars and the like, and full iOS app compatibility. Made in the USA.

More pictures of the combination, plus the original hardware (sadly, showing what you can't do – connect directly to the iPhone). The accessory works with iPad as well as iPhone.

Yikes!

This is not going to be good news for Musicians (IF it comes to pass!)

http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2014/06/05/apple-to-abandon-headphone-jack-suddenly-beats-deal-makes-sense/ (http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2014/06/05/apple-to-abandon-headphone-jack-suddenly-beats-deal-makes-sense/)

Apple To Abandon Headphone Jack? Beats Deal Suddenly Makes Sense

[Editor's note: The original headline stated as fact that Apple was abandoning the headphone jack. This is informed opinion, so we added a question mark.]

Suddenly why Apple AAPL -0.19% spent a seemingly ludicrous $3.2 billion buying Beats is starting to make sense. The reason: Apple is being more Apple than we ever imagined and it could mean saying goodbye to your favourite pair of headphones. Furthermore, if my theory is correct, then the new ones you buy will probably have Beats on the logo.

Get Ready For Lightning Headphones
Like most Apple developments, the news emerged from a leak. 9to5Mac
http://9to5mac.com/2014/06/03/apple-introduces-mfi-specs-for-lightning-cable-headphones-support-arriving-in-future-ios-update/ (http://9to5mac.com/2014/06/03/apple-introduces-mfi-specs-for-lightning-cable-headphones-support-arriving-in-future-ios-update/)
has learnt that Apple submitted a specification to its MFi (Made For) licensing program for headphones which connect using the company's proprietary Lightning port instead of the standard 3.5mm jack. Furthermore all it will take for the Lightning port to start accepting these new headphones is a firmware update.

In Pictures: Apple's Most Notable Acquisitions

Like most Apple innovations this brings some notable upsides. The 3.5mm jack (technically called a 'TRS' connector) is rarely the bottleneck to audio quality, but the Lightning port will enable a switch from analogue to digital audio with an exceedingly high lossless stereo 48 kHz digital output and mono 48 kHz digital input. If you can afford a $1,000 pair of headphones you may pick up the difference.

lightning_hero

Of more relevance to most people, however, is the new functionality it will bring. Headphones with a Lightning connector would be able to do more than lower/increase volume, end calls and skip tracks. There could be specific app control or even the ability to set a specific app to start when they are connected. Since the Lightning jack can also receive power, not just send it, you could still charge a device by connecting it to your headphones while listening to music.

Apple Wins Big
But let's cut to the chase. The biggest upside in this switch would be for Apple.

Right now you can plug any pair of headphones or earphones into an iPhone, iPod, iPad, Mac or MacBook, but with the switch Apple would control an essential peripheral and its MFi licensing program would see it start to take a sizeable fee for every pair of headphones sold for use with an Apple device. Meanwhile Apple would suck up the majority of the profits with the Beats brand because owning it means there will be no licensing fee.

As for users who want to stick with their headphones, they would need to pay for an adaptor which – like the $29 Lightning to 30-pin adaptor (below) – would inevitably be expensive and just bulky enough to make you want to buy dedicated Lightning headphones long term.

2014-06-05_13-42-44

Crucially Apple would also strengthen the hold it has over users by tying them even tighter into its proprietary ecosystem. Yes Beats may primarily have been about securing a streaming music service, but suddenly the ability to earn multi-millions from locked-in Lightning headphones, license fees and sales of adaptors makes for a very juicy side business.

As for rivals, Apple gets a powerful new differentiator and the competition is unlikely to be able to agree on a universal 3.5mm headphone jack replacement standard to combat it for years to come.

But Customers Lose
The problem is most customers will lose out, even die-hard Apple users.

Aside from the extra expense in buying new Lighting headphones or an adaptor, it makes people's lives more difficult. Apple doesn't make everything. With new Lightning headphones the HiFi you love suddenly needs an adaptor from Lightning port back to a 3.5mm jack (if such things will be made). The same goes for the TV you use with wireless headphones, your Windows or Linux work computer, older Apple equipment and on and on.

In Pictures: Apple's Most Notable Acquisitions

Furthermore casual Apple users – the ones with an iPad but nothing else or an iPhone work phone – either need adaptors, multiple pairs of headphones or to only listen to audio from their Apple devices via the external speaker (impractical).

Worse still, the switch to Lightning headphones is likely to be mandatory.

apple_beats_650Roll Out
Make no mistake Apple is not stupid. It knows the state of the headphone market and it knows the risk of trying to impose too much too quickly. That said there is a very simple and effective roll out trajectory:

1. Announce the technology with Beats and headphone partners
2. Unveil clever third party app integration
3. Make this integration inaccessible in any other way
4. Make Lightning port to 3.5mm headphone jack adaptors expensive and bulky
5. In a few years remove the 3.5mm headphone jack from Apple devices citing legacy, greater design flexibility and extra space for a bigger battery

Is there any way such a move could come back to haunt Apple? Potentially.

The flip side of locking existing Apple users in even tighter is that it makes for an extra hurdle in attracting new customers to switch to Apple. Just as those with Lightning headphones won't want the expense of paying to go back to 3.5mm headphones, those with 3.5mm headphones (particularly expensive ones) will be reluctant to splash out on an adaptor or a whole new pair.

But Apple is unlikely to be worried. The company's business model has always been about 'us and them' and controlling the user experience. By fracturing the oldest universal technology standard still in use today it will have found a powerful new way to make that distinction even stronger.

Apple introduces MFi specs for Lightning cable headphones, support arriving in future iOS update
(https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/beats-lightning.png?w=603&h=700)
Beats-lightning

We've learned Apple has quietly introduced a new specification for manufacturers in its Made-For-iPhone/iPad/iPod (MFi) program that allows them to create headphones that connect to iOS devices using a Lightning connector instead of the usual 3.5mm headphone jack. Apple has not flipped the switch on the audio input support for Lightning cables and existing iOS devices, but it will release a software update in the future that will enable support in devices running iOS 7.1 or later.

The Lightning headphones will be capable of receiving lossless stereo 48 kHz digital audio output from Apple devices and sending mono 48 kHz digital audio input. The input means that the headphones will also support a microphone for audio input following Apple's upcoming update. Manufacturers will be able to take advantage of Apple Headphone Remote controls like Volume Up/Down/etc, as well as other buttons for launching specific apps such as iTunes Radio or initiating playback controls on iOS. In addition, the headphones can be made to work specifically with a companion iOS app and launch a specific app when connected to an iOS device.

There are a few benefits of using the Lightning cable to send audio. Apple says the headphones will be able to draw power from an Apple device (even if the device is asleep), which for some products could eliminate cost associated with an internal battery. It could also work the other way around by providing power to an Apple device from an internal battery or external power source. That enables you to listen to music and also use a passthrough setup so you could charge the device simultaneously, much like you can with an audio dock that uses a Lightning connector. The headphones will also be capable of receiving firmware updates.

Apple will allow two configurations for the headphones. Standard Lightning Headphones are described by Apple as using minimum components when paired with a digital-to-analog converter supported by the Lightning Headphone Module. It also has an Advanced Lightning Headphones specification that allows digital audio processing features like active noise cancellation and uses a digital signal processor and digital/analog converter. Manufacturers building the Standard configuration have to use this Wolfson digital-to-analog converter.
http://www.wolfsonmicro.com/products/dacs/WM8533/ (http://www.wolfsonmicro.com/products/dacs/WM8533/)

While everyone has been focusing on what Apple's purchase of Beats Electronics means for its audio and headphone business down the road, the news Apple is developing some innovative new headphone tech using its own proprietary Lightning connector is significant. If Apple does get partners on board and Lightning headphones prove to be popular with users, it's easy to see how Apple could push Lightning headphones as a big differentiating feature for iPhone and other Apple devices. A previous report claimed Apple was working on a version of its own in-ear EarPods using a Lightning connector and planned to enable higher-resolution audio playback in iOS 8.

I'm guessing we'll see a Lightning cable eventually make its way to a pair of Beats. Perhaps Apple will even use Beats as the first pair of Lightning cable headphones to help promote the new tech when it finally flips the switch on support.

It seems like it would be sales-suicide to omit the 3.5mm output jack any time soon.  Yes, it would mean owners of the latest iPad etc. would be forced to buy Apple accessories, but it would also slow iPad sales to customers who already own previous versions.  The greater the cost of the accessories, the greater the aversion to upgrade.  The lower the cost of the accessory, the less reward Apple sees (by way of revenue from headphones sales etc.) for taking that risk.

I have to imagine there would be at least one generation of hardware where the user is at their own discretion to go with digital vs. analog headphones.  Otherwise, too many of us will dig our heels in with what we already have.  I know I would - it's only been a few months since I discovered (based on your feedback) that the existing DAC and 3.5mm output is sufficient for performance.  And I'm not ready to retire my iRig Pro, or start running splitters, adaptors, et al.  iPad finally won me over by being easy to integrate.  If it gets to be a hassle, I'll wind up back in laptop-land.

If you doubt the misguided dumbing down of the general populace in regards to music,  read the comments on link above. Seems nobody knows musicians use IOS devices for live performance and care about minimum latency.
And remember the best Blue tooth 4.0 APT-X audio exhibits 80 milliseconds latency minimum.

And witness nobody has heard about using the Apple  USB Camera connection kit  (CCK) to connect external Audio DAC.

If this comes to pass, I might have to skip the larger iPhone 6  and buy an iPhone 5S, or just stay with my Android Galaxy Note2.

I don't see anything other than speculation about removing 3.5mm output entirely.  If apple wants to make a digital host out of crappy overpriced headphones, then good for them, but they will only stand to lose big by making Beats lightning only and iPad trs free.

As an ipad owner and audiophile I would never invest in Beats headphones and there is an army of peers who agree with me.

The target audience for beats doesn't usually go on about iphones and the target audience for iphones doesn't go on about beats.  What's worse the joe schmo business executives and cab drivers will flip out when they find out they need to get a hideous pair of designer ear muffs just to have a hands free device.

I'm not worried about this, even if it's real.  Apple will lose big customer base if they make it the exclusive way to get a wired speaker connection into an iOS device or if they turn Beats into a proprietary nightmare.

Also:  comments section in most sensationalist articles is made by a small but vocal minority.
As musicians we are also a minority.  When apple instituted lightning connectors we got shafted because we had to deal with peripherals that no longer worked and hundreds of dollars in adapters and failed experiments whereas the average iphone user bought a new generic charge cable and forgot about it.

Removing 3.5mm jacks would be different in that it wouldn't just inconvenience us, the minority, it would be a kick in the face to every single iOS user across the board.  Trust me when I say that the idea of not being able to use your crappy 15 dollar earbuds on your new iphone will send users packing, new and old.

It's also important to consider that Android phones are making huge gains against apple.  When you consider that the greater market share jumps back and fourth between the latest nexus, ipad, galaxy and iphone it becomes clear that apple isn't the all powerful tablet gods they appear to be.

I use expensive very nice Sennheiser earbuds and another pair of nearly as nice Sony earbuds and I absolutely use my iRig interface to tune my guitars using the Peterson Strobotuner app.   All minijack devices.  The minijack "just works".

Plus, I gotta tell you - I live in Minnesota, a place where it gets extremely cold in the winter.

I had one lightning cable become useless because the things can't stand up to cold weather - the place where the cable connects to the jack gets cold and brittle and pretty soon you have a useless 19 dollar cable.  I was using a car-lighter to usb jack to lightning cable to charge my iPhone5 because someone dropped the ball and didn't have lightning equipped car chargers right away after the thing came out.  I eventually replaced it with a dedicated iPad lightning charger that works.

Stereo minijacks can hack cold weather and if I do need to replace them they're not 19 dollars.

I'm also annoyed at Apple in general because my iMac is forced to use a third party firewire 800 case (which decided to stop working this week taking about three terabytes of data with it).  If they'd produced a machine that actually allowed third party connection of external drives at reasonable speeds instead of that I wouldn't need an external case but I'm preaching to the choir.  Just mad at myself.  Some of that music isn't easily recoverable.

Wow that is horrid!
Todd that is frighting to hear what say about the plug in cold weather.
Can you imagine after all these years if someone has the power and says the 1/4 guitar cable is dead.
Is that next???

PS I have no interest in Dr Dre headphones.
I would not buy a set if it would save my life.

I use expensive very nice Sennheiser earbuds and another pair of nearly as nice Sony earbuds and I absolutely use my iRig interface to tune my guitars using the Peterson Strobotuner app.   All minijack devices.  The minijack "just works".

I hate apple for all this. First the 30 pin to lightening where you have to buy a stupid 2" convertor cable for INR 2500 (approx. USD 40) which is as much as a 5 meter Roland GK3 cable .
Then it also renders the gadgets like Behringer iStudio useless with the newer ipads (ipad air) unless you have that converter cable.

Now this headphone jack thing!!...
I really pray that Android steps up in terms of pro music apps and the underlying architecture so that they give Apple a run for their money.

I use ipad air only for music. All other tasks seem so simple on my samsung galaxy note 2- be it sat navigation, taking notes, bluetooth, sharing data with other mobiles, PCs etc.

That would be just the sort of boost Neil Young's Pono music player needs.

There is another theory about the Beats acquisition that make s a lot of sense - that apple bought beats to have a store to sell music to the Android world. Makes sense to go after the market that isn't using iTunes. I hope this theory is the correct one! :-)

It all makes sense to me.
Remember, Apple is a company looking to make profits, they are not there for customers convenience.

Steve - the cable was definetely not meant to be used as a charger in a car but at the time it was the only one you could get.  Now you can get tougher cabled chargers that are meant to be a car charger and that's what I've used since.

Beats is the worst sounding of the expensive headphones IMO.  They have a hard "thocky" plastic sound to them - yes they have huge bass but it's just in your face and every snare hit gives me a migraine headache.  I've heard less expensive headphones sound far better but they're going for what the kids will want to buy to be cool in school etc.

As far as Apple goes I've seen photos of the purported external case housings for the next iPhone on macrumors and the housings all have 3.5mm connectors.  So maybe it's something they were mulling around at one time.  I do recall that sometimes they release rumors to see who released them so they can silence (or terminate) a leak.  Plus, Pono is using 3.5mm analog stereo out for their player.

I believe what they really did here is acquire Beats to try and compete with Spotify because that's the service that Apple is going to be hard pressed to compete with.  And also to sell to the Android users.  Also a guy like Dre might school Apple in what is "cool" to the kids on the street.

The "download a song for 99 cents" model is unfortunately failing in favor of the "pay a flat fee and get all the music you can stand" model.  Or "pay nothing and tolerate some ads, just like radio and get all the music you want."

Never mind that there's a number of reports that some musicians won't be able to eat much less record albums in the future based on this.  If I sell my CD off iTunes I get 75% of the cost but if my music is streamed on Spotify I get pennies per month.

I heard some major artists with mass play (Lady Gaga and her ilk) ended up getting a reasonable amount per month from them but she still won't be able to live off that cash.  Most below the radar guys such as myself would starve trying to live off just that.  Example: last month I made 2 cents USD.  The month before 19 cents.  I'm not a good example since I'm not above the radar at all.

I hope Gordon Kelly at Forbes is enjoying all the commotion he's stirred with his wildly speculative article.  It's rare you get an opportunity to write an article that goes viral.

Here's TUAW's take:
http://www.tuaw.com/2014/06/09/apple-isnt-going-to-abandon-the-3-5mm-headphone-jack/ (http://www.tuaw.com/2014/06/09/apple-isnt-going-to-abandon-the-3-5mm-headphone-jack/)

Also very telling is lack of a story on this topic at Mac Rumors - those folks are much more plugged in with what Apple is thinking than Gordon Kelly.  They're always right on top of what the next iPhone/iPad models will look like and such.

I'm now convinced that the 3.5mm jack will remain for the time being, and this story (see 1st post in this thread) is just fluff

Just to update this old thread.

I've been using my Galaxy Note 2 since Nov 2012, it finally got an update to Android OS 4.2.2 last month.

But I'll switch back to an iPhone later this year, mostly because The Voicemail on my AT&T Note2 now is rather clobbered  - many aspects of usability have suffered thanks to the latest Android updates, and my battery life now barely gets through one day.

And now that I'm using many Macs at home, Apple really clobbers any Android phone USB data connection, and Samsung Kies is a major joke. So I must use a PC to move files off my Android phone.

Also Ive become better accustomed to navigating iTunes as my IOS device data manager

Looking forward to jumping back to a larger iPhone before 2015, probably wait for the 2nd 2014 larger than large release version due December 2014

I've been using an FTPserver app on my Android devices which makes filesharing and management a snap. Even a webbrowser on any OS can browse files (read) from the phone. Any FTP client on any OS can read/write over WIFI to the phone. Phone to tablet or other phone is easy as well. Maybe that'll help til you get your replacement.

Samsung Kies is a major joke.
Couldn't agree more there.
When I updated my previous Samsung Ace2 to a latter version of android,
it became uselessly latent at everything (so I gave it to the Mrs), and got a submersible X-Cover2.

Now that one itself is a joke too. 1Gb of internal storage and unable to move apps to external storage card.
Forever giving messages of "insufficient memory available".

iPhone next,
one good thing about mac IOS is that it does what it's supposed to..

I'm going back to an iPhone ASAP as well.  My Windows Phone experience has been an absolute nightmare (thanks mainly to the terrible HTC hardware.)

I was an Apple hater for years, so I'm sympathetic to people looking for alternatives, but the iPhone is just so good at what it does.  Make fun of the kids in the cafes with their MacBook Airs, build a Linux workstation out of hemp, whatever it takes.  But for the love of your sanity, just buy an iPhone.

Funny how that happens. I am not an apple fanboy by any stretch of the imagination and I am usually 1 to 4 years behind the gadget curve but I have still ended up with an iPhone 4S, an iPad Mini, a iPod Nano and an iPod Classic. I use the iPhone and  iPod classic pretty much every day and the others numerous times throughout the week. That's completely ignoring the fun uses the iPad has as a musical gadget.

That's the thing - I have quite a few friends with android phones and they all seem to experience more practical difficulties - software difficult to use, confusing options for the same task, poor battery life, few updates - than any of my friends who use iPhones.  A few of them choose an Android phone because they are anti-Apple, but most were sold on the bigger screen in the shop ... until they tried to operate their phone one-handed and realise why the current iPhones are exactly the size they are.  Of course you sacrifice 'choice' and 'freedom' - whatever they are and what ever they mean because each freedom (e.g. install what you like) comes with a responsibility (keep your phone free of malware).

I insisted that my wife uses an iPhone and an iPad and I have an almost non-existent support commitment.  Apple software doesn't always 'just work' but in many cases it is as near to that as to make no odds.  If you want a smooth smartphone experience nothing comes close to Apple because no-one manages the walled garden as well - and if you can live with that and afford one, then you should.

I don't buy the processor performance stats though - they would only matter if you could install iOS on a Samsung phone or visa versa.  You have to compare the latest iPhone with the latest Android on their real world performance and utility

You pays your money and you takes your choice ... as true now as its ever been

Curious but I experience everyday the opposite, I have a lot of friends and people around who use android phones and are perfectly happy with it, even some previously have had iphone, Im one of them. And yes of course the size is a reason, and a "big" one, even Apple seems finally to have realized this, so now the new Iphone 6 is expected to be much larger than the former, so that old argument about the 3,5" size is now... well, past history.

Im not anti Apple at all, I have 2 ipad, because there are musical apps that I can really use, so there is a good reason to use it, but for the phone, and trust me I use it a lot in my work... I find the android ones better, bigger and very important cheaper.

The new Iphone 6 looks good, especially the large one, 5,5"  ::) just like my Note2, cool!.    ;D

Quote it should be remembered that the iPhone 6 Plus won't be able to run music-making apps that are exclusive to iPad (of which there are quite a few) - only those that are Universal or designed for iPhone will run on it.

The Iphone 6 Plus is the only iPhone version that supports a "Landscape" mode
I expect many developers of "iPad Only" music apps will open up and make them universal with the caveat that it can only run on the 1920 x 1080 iPhone 6 Plus display

I will be ordering a iPhone 6 Plus 128GB next week.

I ordered an iPhone 6 at lunch today.  Getting rid of my HTC 8x Windows phone will be like the end of a (bad) era.  Hard to believe it's been almost two years with a phone that a) has no apps, b) randomly turns itself off, c) gets extremely hot for no reason, and d) takes terrible photos in almost any light.  (The camera issue is something I didn't give much thought when I picked the phone.  That turned out to be a big mistake since my daughter was a year old at the time.)

Salesman upsold me to the 128G but I was on the fence about the Plus and decided I'd probably be happier with the smaller phone.  I have issues with tendonitis (guitarist's worst nightmare) so ergonomics are pretty important to me.  My only reservation is I'd really like the Plus' image stabilization (per the aforementioned daughter.  :) )

Salesman also led me to believe I'd have the thing in hand within a week after the 9/19 ship date, but I already got an email from AT&T saying they'd deliver between 10/13 and 10/31.  Big difference.  Ah well, first world problems.

But I have an old iphone 4 i might use for the $200 off tradein AT&T discount

Thanks.  I'm sticking with AT&T as well - the devil I know, and it's a package deal with my wife.  $200 is a good deal for that trade in - I think Gazelle, for instance, would give you something closer to $75 for it.  (I got $85 for mine two years ago.  In retrospect, at that price, I should have just kept it for offline utility applications, e.g. as a tone generator or whatever.)

Interestingly, AT&T did not try to put me on contract this time around - they basically just gave me a payment plan on the phone itself.  They waived my early termination fees on the WP8 fiasco, there was no activation fee... basically I paid taxes on the phone itself, and they lowered my monthly plan rate so that my phone bill actually went down, even after adding in the installments on the iPhone.  (And he bumped my data from 6G to 10G.)  It was weird - I went in prepared to spend as much as $400 ($200 for the phone, $200 to get out of my old contract), and instead I spent $50, lowered my phone bill, and got a nicer phone than I intended.  (Moral of the story: check in with your carrier every so often to see what their latest plans look like.  Every time I do I realize I've been spending too much money on my phone bill for many months.)

Too good to be true?  Possibly.  I'll believe it all when I have the new phone and have seen my first bill.

Ah - November.  Somehow I confused Nov. and Sept. and was wondering why my 6 would be a month later than the 6 Plus.

I wouldn't mind the wait except that I'm leaving for a long (years) overdue vacation in a few weeks, was hoping to bring a workable camera, and now suspect it will arrive in my driveway while I'm away.

...and now that I'm seeing that -$450, I'm wondering why the salesman didn't present any options for me to renew my contract at a savings.  I might have to stop back in for a second opinion.  The paperwork is very vague as to what my bill will actually look like.  Too many angles...

The hurdle for me is if I dont navigate the correct purchase path for iPhone 6 Plus , its easy for  AT&T  to eliminate my unlimited data plan and force me into monthly caped data plan , so I have to tread carefully  !

Probably true.  I decided to go to the AT&T store because I had that early termination thing to sort out.  Now I don't know whether that was even necessary - the salesman basically brushed it off.  I get confused trying to sort out the relationship between the Apple store and the service providers, and who can and can't do what.  Anyway, I might have to do some legwork next week and undo/redo some of this.  Although by then it might be too late and I might be relegated to a later shipment anyway.  Who knows?

I should probably just stop thinking about this altogether LOL.  Why lose what's left of my hair to have a phone a week sooner and maybe save $10 a month?

I have unlimited data plan and it just carried over just like it did last time a bought a new iPhone from Apple. When you buy through Apple they contact AT&T and check for upgrade status, etc. Very easy but I did notice when I checked the AT&T site for upgrade the delivery date was in November and through the Apple website the delivery date was 3-4 weeks so I went through Apple.

Thinking this through - i bet history repeats itself and there will be a "Black Friday sale" at AT&T  with deep discount on new Iphones.

If it does not ship till end of November 2014 anyway - why not wait for a sale.

i contacted AT&T - I have to wait until Oct 27 2014 before I  order iPhone 6 Plus 128GB for $499 - else its $750

I'll wait 6 weeks!

In the past on 2 year contract iPhone plans -AT&T would allow me to upgrade after 18 months,  - but this time they are forcing me to wait until the full 24 month Contract expires for my current phone (Samsung Galaxy Note2) on Oct 26, 2014.

AT&T was surprisingly flexible about letting me out of contract at ~21 months, but I think this is because the salesman was pushing the "Next" plan in lieu of an upgrade and contract renewal.  For better or for worse, who can tell...

But I'm annoyed he had me convinced I'd have a phone next week, whereas email correspondence now indicates end of October.  I might take a stroll up to the Apple Store at lunch and see whether they can improve the timeline (without making things too complicated with AT&T.)

The Apple Store was exactly the sort of freak show you'd reasonably expect on release day.   :o  I didn't have the "luxury" of standing in a series of lines for an estimated three hours, so...  waiting.  It was nice to see the two phones in person, though.  I like them both, but I'm reassured that I'm better off with the smaller one.
Title: Re: The new iphone design confirmed

In a rare case of underestimating themselves, AT&T misstated their delivery date by over a month - in my favor.  The iPhone actually arrived last night.  Good thing I didn't cancel the order and stand in a line all day Friday.  ::)  Anyway, what an improvement over my last phone!

All that remains is to make sense of my bill, which is neither what the salesman quoted me, nor what the paperwork indicated (on any of its many self-contradicting pages), nor anything like my old bill.  All of the above uniquely itemized (e.g. show half your work, and never the same half) so that I can't possibly make sense of it or dispute the logic.  :/

I've just been using Safari to visit the site from the iPhone, and my usual entry point is the recent posts link.  The only real problem is that even when flipped to landscape mode, the print on that view is small enough that i can barely read it without zooming.  Once inside a thread the font is a little larger.

I just tried it with Atomic (forgot I had bought this at some point) and it does have a nice feature to increase the font size.

https://bgr.com/2014/10/24/128gb-iphone-6-plus-crash/ (https://bgr.com/2014/10/24/128gb-iphone-6-plus-crash/)

Even though the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launch was a great success for the company, with 2014 iPhones registering record sales according to Apple, several issues have stained Apple's iPhone 6 launch, including iOS 8 software problems and the #Bendgate mess, to name just a few. More recently, it was discovered that the iPhone 6's plastic antenna covers also come with one unexpected flaw. Now, AppleInsider points us to a growing thread on Apple's support forum that details a potential software issue affecting iPhone 6 Plus handsets.

FROM EARLIER: A new iPhone 6 problem arises: Dye from jeans is ruining the iPhone's plastic strips
https://bgr.com/2014/10/22/iphone-6-cases-plastic-strips-color-rubbing/ (https://bgr.com/2014/10/22/iphone-6-cases-plastic-strips-color-rubbing/)
The thread in questions has over 9,200 views and more than 60 responses, and it details constant crashing issues that affect certain devices. It appears the bug affects 128GB iPhone 6 Plus models that have more than 700 applications installed, but Apple has yet to confirm what the problem is.

The system crashes can apparently occur even without user interaction, and setting up the phone as new and reinstalling apps manually — rather than restoring a previous iPhone image on the device — does not fix the problem.

Some users have taken their faulty devices to Apple stores, where some people were able exchange the faulty phone for a new device, but others have been told to keep using their malfunctioning iPhone 6 Plus units as their ticket escalates in Apple's tech support department.

iPhone 6 Plus replacement devices have also proven to be susceptible to crashes.

At this time, it's not clear how widespread the problem is, as it might only affect 128GB iPhone 6 Plus models that have hundreds of iOS applications installed. The full Apple support forum thread is available below at the source link.

Like many of you I have a new iPhone 6 Plus 128gb which repeatedly crashed after restoring from an iPhone 5. It finally hung up in a continual reboot loop and was essentially dead.I had over 1000 Apps on the previous iPhone 5 which transferred to the iPhone 6 Plus. I took the iPhone 6 Plus to the Apple Store, and even after replacing the software and firmware, the Genius could not get the iPhone 6 Plus to function properly. He replaced the iPhone 6 Plus with a new phone. When I took it home and again restored from my iPhone 5 backup, I began having similar problems. However, I did notice one significant problem which might have caused some of my difficulty. I had a custom lock screen on my iPhone 5, which was transferred to my iPhone 6 Plus. Whenever I went into the Settings App and accessed the Wallpaper settings, the iPhone 6 Plus immediately crashed and started to reboot. The custom lock screen appeared OK, but seems to be totally incompatible with the iPhone 6 Plus. I then set up my iPhone 6 Plus as a new phone with the default lock screen and began restoring my Apps. I now have over 700 Apps on the iPhone 6 Plus, and have encountered no problems, other than a few older Apps failing to work properly and sometimes quitting. But I have had no system crashes like previously. Holding my breath on this, but hopefully using the default lock screen and reinstalling all Apps from the App store will work.

I'm hoping it turns out to be a simple software glitch but the app bootloop problem sounds like bad flash memory to me.  It's possible the first run of iphone 6's were produced with a run of bad non volatile  memory.  128 gb is a high spec and the cheapest manufacturing bid at the time usually wins out.  Maybe Apple thought SSD tech had advanced far enough ahead of the curve so that QA wouldn't be an issue when sourcing flash memory?

...or some kind of indexing problem.  700+ apps on a phone is slightly insane IMO.  How do you even know what's available much less use all of it?

Between this and the "dyegate" complaint, talk about your first-world problems.   ::)

Apple May Have a Huge iPhone 6 Plus Recall on its Hands
BY TODD HASELTON | NOVEMBER 4, 2014

Apple pretty much dismissed any concerns with iPhone 6 Plus bending, even though there's plenty of proof that, given enough pressure, the phone does indeed bend. We haven't experienced that under normal usage situations, however, and that problem seems to have mostly quieted down. Still, Apple may be facing a much bigger headache that one media outlet suggests could result in a massive recall of iPhone 6 Plus units.

If you own the iPhone 6 Plus with 128GB of storage, you may have noticed that it sometimes crashes and reboots. I can confirm this with my own unit, and apparently the problem lies in the storage option that Apple decided to use on the device. As a result of how it handles data, the flash storage and its controller IC componenet may ultimately have issues when there are loads of applications stored on the larger format iPhone 6 Plus.

According to Business Korea, Apple opted to use triple-level cell (TLC) NAND flash storage in the iPhone 6 Plus to save costs over multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash storage that's used in other iPhone models. The problem, Business Korea explained, is that while TLC can store more data, it's also slower and less stable than the other options available, which may be one reason why the iPhone 6 Plus with 128GB of storage crashes. The site also points to known problems with the controller IC, or integrated circuit, that has also been recognized in Samsung SSD products that use the same NAND flash.

It's possible that Apple might be able to work around the issue with a software fix, it seems, but Business Korea also thinks something much bigger may be on the horizon. "Some in the industry think that if TLC flash is indeed the cause of the defects, Apple might recall all of the products that have been sold so far," the news outlet said. The issue, at least on my end, isn't so frequent that I'd return my device, but perhaps it's a much bigger problem than it appears to be on the surface.

128 GB iPhone 6 Plus and sensational "recall" headlines
By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Nov 4, 2014 a   1:46 pm EST

128 GB iPhone 6 Plus and sensational
There are some incredibly sketchy, borderline irresponsible allegations coming out of Korea that claim there's a "huge potential recall" facing the 128GB version of the iPhone 6 Plus. There isn't. Certainly nothing that Apple has initiated and apparently nothing they themselves have come even remotely close to making a case for. So what's going on here?
The allegation states that there's a problem with the NAND Flash storage in the 128 GB version of the iPhone 6 Plus. As someone who owns an iPhone 6 Plus, I admit I clicked on the link when we received it, and its offshoots, in our tip box this morning. Then I started reading and found... nothing. Nothing but vague references to "some in the industry", and unlinked attributions to Business Insider and Apple Insider.

I found absolutely nothing, other than negative attention seeking, that lent any credibility whatsoever to the headline — a headline that makes use of the hottest of hot button language.

Beyond the sensationalism, there have indeed been some reports of some 128GB iPhone 6 Plus customers facing crashes or reboot loops, and of some customers getting their devices swapped out because of it at the Genius Bar. And that's what the Genius Bar is for. When tens of millions of brand new configurations of brand new products ship, that's exactly the kind of data and samples that Apple routinely collects and investigates as part of quality assurance for all their products.

Anecdotally, I've had no problems with my 128 GB iPhone 6 Plus, and I've been hitting it pretty hard, day in, day out, for over a month.

Accumulating this kind of information is important. Testing to see how and when it happens is important. Finding out how often it's being reported is important. Doing none of that and slapping an incendiary headline at the top of it is bullshit.

As a consumer, all it does is create noise and stress that I'm forced to navigate and cope with to find out what's really going on. And what's really going on is the part that matters to me most.

How To Check If iPhone 6 / 6 Plus Has MLC Or TLC NAND Flash Memory

You may think, when picking up a new mobile device, that your model is the exact same as every single other person who opted for the same color and storage setup. This isn't always the case, though, and in the instance of the iPhone 6?s memory, some are bundled with multi-layer cell (MLC) while others have TLC, or three-layer cell flash. If you're jailbroken, you can find out which type of memory your device includes, and given that MLC is notably more favorable than TLC given its faster read / write speeds and more expensive nature, you'll probably want to check the guide below and (hopefully) confirm that you've been blessed with MLC.

Apple only briefly dabbled with TLC before switching back to MLC on a permanent basis, so it's more likely than not that your iPhone 6or iPhone 6 Plus includes multi-layer cell NAND flash. But if you own either a 64GB or 128GB iPhone 6 / 6 Plus – entry-level configuration is apparently unaffected – then the guide below will show you how to find out one way or the other.

At this point you must be thinking; why is it important to find out which NAND memory my iPhone 6 / 6 Plus has? The answer is simple; MLC is more reliable than TLC, and doesn't cause much problems than the former, where users are reporting that their devices are stuck in a bootloop. The problem is tied to the device using TLC memory, rather than MLC, and mostly affects those with 64GB and 128GB capacity devices. So, if your device is acting up, or showing signs of shenanigans to come, then it's probably related to the type of memory you're using.

http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-check-if-iphone-6-6-plus-has-mlc-or-tlc-nand-flash-memory-video/ (http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-check-if-iphone-6-6-plus-has-mlc-or-tlc-nand-flash-memory-video/)

An easier way to find out is just download IOKITbrowser on your iPhone here:
http://www.pgyer.com/IOKitBrowser (http://www.pgyer.com/IOKitBrowser)
IOKitBrowser

and go through the menus Root > N61AP > AppleARMPE > arm-io > AppleT7000IO > ans > AppleA7IOPV1 > AppleCSI > asp > ASPStorage

Within device characteristics, you'll be looking for "default-bits-per-cell", which is succeeded by a value. If said value is 2, then you're good, and running on MLC. But if, by some chalk, your value is 3, then this means you're running the slightly less able TLC NAND flash.

Works on non jailbroken devices as well so you don't have to be jailbroken to see what you have.

Everyone has different sensitivity to RF / Microwave emissions   - Myself I'm among those 1% who can not tolerate wearing bluetooth headset on my head more than 10 minutes before I can literally feel my brain heating up and causing a headache.

Same for using my Cellphone  - I'll place it on a table 5 feet away from my head and use its speakerphone mode 90% of the time, or restrict use of the phone near my head to short calls - to minimize my pain.

ive had iPhones between 2008-2012, and a Galaxy Note2 since 2012 - I always leave Bluetooth and NFC "Off", and only enable it sporadically when i want to use a BlueTooth Keyboard, or send Bluetooth audio to my iLoud  - (never Bluetooth headphones.)
I have a few NFC Tags  - but not had time to play with them, but these can be used in numerous productive ways.

But I leave Bluetooth and NFC off  - both to conserve battery life and minimize my exposure to close proximity RF emissions.

So the following thread on the Apple forum has me reconsidering against the iPhones 6 plus - since at present time - the NFC communication chip employed for Apple Pay is "always on", and can not be disabled  - and I find valid concern and agreement with the poster below.

Been buying new iPhones every year since they have been released.. Received my new iPhone 6 plus last Friday the 19th on launch date and was super excited!

After owning the phone for a day, I started to notice that I have a really bad headache.  Been using it for 12 days now and the headache has not gone away... The only difference that I can tell from this phone and my previous 5s is that this thing has NFC built into it with NO option to turn it off.  I believe this is what is causing my headaches.  I really love this phone but I'm obviously not going to jeopardize my health for screen size unless Apple adds a kill switch to this antenna.

A little background - I am very sensitive to Bluetooth.  Any time I am around or using it, I get these headaches exactly what I am describing here.  First thing I always do when I get my phones is shut off Bluetooth and everything has always been ok.

Has anyone else experienced a similar health concern?

I'm a guy that already owns half a dozen IOS devices  - and while its handy to carry all my IOS music apps on my phone, I prefer using iPad for Music Creation over my iPhone 100 to 1 !

But due to the "always on NFC chip in iPhone 6/6 Plus and my own hypersensitivity to RF emissions close to my head ( I use "speakerphone 90% of the time and try to limit the time my smart phone is near my head for real health reasons  )  - The Note4 is looking more attractive for my needs as an upgrade for my "daily driver" smartphone.

I have been using the 6+ for about 6 weeks - no issues for me (& I never put it down) but I have never noted a problem before to RF and headaches - I do tend to use the iPhone headphones for longer convo's though - mostly so I can type (or browse Vguitar forum) during calls :-)

Just an update

I did get a new iPhone 6 Plus  earlier this week ( Ordered mid December)  - and as much as I tried to like my 2012 Galaxy Note2,  - It feels good to be back on iPhone  - where I can be productive again.

I did the test for memory type and I appear to have the version with the "bad TLC RAM" - despite this being a brand new iphone 6 plus built in December 2014

How To Check If iPhone 6 / 6 Plus Has MLC Or TLC NAND Flash Memory
http://www.philmug.ph/forum/f126/how-check-if-iphone-6-6-plus-has-mlc-tlc-nand-flash-memory-93587/ (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/f126/how-check-if-iphone-6-6-plus-has-mlc-tlc-nand-flash-memory-93587/)

But no problems for me and Ive already loaded 350 apps.

I do wish many of my iPad only apps would work on my  large screen iPhone 6 plus 128GB.

I'm using a good screen protector
ZAGG InvisibleShield Glass for Apple iPhone 6 Plus

and this

i-Blason iPhone 6 Plus Case -  reminds me of my old Sedio Dilex Galaxy Note2 case, - was going to head back to Seidio for a iPhone 6 Plus case - but I feel this i-Blason iPhone 6 Plus case offers better protection for iPhone 6 plus compared to the Sedio version. I had a different case for a week - (Spigen Tough Armor Case ) - but this iBlason case offers much better frontal protection with a higher shock absorbing "lip" surrounding the screen. I tend to accidentally drop my phones each day - and this case is a winner, and perfect fit - very good port access. I can easily connect the Zeetron LED Light up Charge Sync Lightning Cable and my ATH-M50X headphones. EXCELLENT CASE !

*  Yonac ToneStack  -
http://www.yonac.com/tonestack/ (http://www.yonac.com/tonestack/)
its amazing, and looses very little in the migration from iPad to iPhone and it has the lowest latency and best stereo  FX  of any of my IOS Guitar Amp /FX sims today. With careful tweaking the Yonac ToneStack Amps sims are very usable ( better sounding than my Eleven Rack! )

FWIW -  Positive Grid BIAS is not as impressive to me of late - even on the latest  / fastest IOS hardware on IOS 8, the BIAS/ Jamup Pro processing delay  LATENCY ( despite all settings) is very apparent and frankly distracting and annoying for real music , and the Positive Grid Mono FX in Jamup Pro tell me they are too focused on other apps and vaporware ( like the 14 month "late" BT-4 BlueTooth footcotroller)

Welcome back!  I love my iPhone 6.

While we're back on the subject, it's worth checking out the latest Tapatalk update.  The "Timeline" tab is now an effective way to stay on top of VGuitar posts, provided you don't let them get too out of hand.  It only displays one page of recent posts, vs. the browser-based 10 pages.  (But you can set the number of posts per page - I'm presently seeing posts out to page 4 of what's in the browser.)

With my iPhone 6 Plus  - I'll share a few accessories i'm using

I use this to mount iPhone 6 Plus to mic stand

I bought this older Belkin iPhone 5S Lightning Stand ($16) - and with a slight modification it lets me dock and charge my iPhone 6 Plus with its i-Blason Case intact while at work.
Belkin Charge and Sync Dock with Lightning Cable Connector for iPhone 5 / 5S and iPod touch 5th Generation (Silver)

I use this Belkin Lightning Dock with my iPhone 6 Plus - But I did take it apart, ( remove rubber bottom pad and remove 4 small phillips screws) and slightly modified the Belkin rotating base that the Lightning plug is part of. ( i used a small X-Acto Saw from Michael's Hobby Store) and put it all back together. The outcome is now the rotating base for the Lightning plug is narrower, and now allows me to place my iPhone 6 Plus with i-Blason Heavy Duty Case ( Otterbox Defender style) - I love this dock!

After my 3rd week of using iPhone 6 Plus - I'm back being productive again!

I had been using iPhones 2008-2012 - but with my eyesight getting worse, and being mindful of use-ability, the larger Galaxy Note 2 made sense for at the time back in 2012

But i found the "too many options" on Android to be a drag, lack of interapp compatibility, the promise of low latency Audio was smoke and mirrors,   and I had a few major security issues  - where my bank had to issue two new VISA cards to solve a security breach  - that might have been due to a rogue Android app I downloaded somewhere, and the paradigm of Android phones under carrier contract here in the USA always being at the mercy of AT&T / Verizon ( and NOT Samsung) for OS updates  - which were always 6 months late and always made my Android  device slower with less battery life  - yuck!

Those problems and the instability of Android, makes me stay with IPhones.
Not even a matter of the name of the brand, it's more a security thing like virus free.

Adapters that convert a 3.5mm headphone connector to a Lightning connector have already surfaced in China. Tama Electric is making three versions of the adapter as spotted by Macotakara.

Each adapter features volume and play/pause buttons and two of them have a micro-USB port in addition to the 3.5mm port.

Apple is widely rumored to be dropping the headphone jack from its next generation iPhone allowing for a thinner design, saving internal space, and improving audio quality. Presumably, the company would include a set of Lightning earbuds with the device but those who want to use their regular headphones would need an adapter similar to these.

To ease the transition, Apple could include their own adapter with the new iPhone but many feel it will be an additional purchase.

Of course the above is possible because small 24 bit DAC headphone amp IC's are cheap these days.

Apple Leaks Reveal iPhone 7 Nasty Surprises
by: Gordon Kelly

There is no headphone jack. By now the whole world knows Apple has made the controversial decision to axe the world's most ubiquitous port from the new iPhone 7. But now users may not be getting the goodies they expected as compensation for this loss...

A pair of leaks this week make grim reading for potential iPhone 7 buyers as Apple appears set to cut back on two innovations widely expected this year.

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fblogs-images.forbes.com%2Fgordonkelly%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F08%2FScreenshot-2016-08-03-at-17.49.01.png&hash=1a20aa85809cd9275f9bc1e63aa26567bae9d430)

'Great Features' and 'Nasty Surprises' are my regular columns investigating software updates and new hardware for the best features / biggest problems hidden behind the headlines.

Nasty Surprise #1: No Stereo Speakers

The first bad news comes via highly reliable French site Nowhereelse.fr which has attained schematics of the iPhone 7. The schematics say the matching second speaker grill on the bottom edge of the iPhone 7 (added thanks to the removal of the headphone jack) is purely cosmetic and simply houses the microphone.

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fblogs-images.forbes.com%2Fgordonkelly%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F08%2FScreenshot-2016-08-15-at-21.23.33-1200x862.png&hash=ab2c8dc939da1eb3f65f143213c75a314b70b544)

Apple has pulled a similar stunt before with the iPhone 4S which also had matching dual speakers on the bottom edge (the headphone jack was at the top of the phone back then). Many predicted stereo sound at the time, only to be disappointed.

Nasty Surprise #2: No Touch Sensitive Home Button

With iPhone 7 innovations expected to be primarily internal (improved performance, bigger battery) and incremental (the dual camera is an iPhone 7 Plus / Pro only feature) there was one exception: the home button.

After nine years, the iPhone 7 appeared ready to move to a MacBook-inspired touch sensitive button which uses haptic feedback to simulate the sensation of physical touch. A fixed button would be more reliable, save physical space and potentially enable Apple to use the touch sensitivity to add gesture support at a later date (there's no sign of this in iOS 10).

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fblogs-images.forbes.com%2Fgordonkelly%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F08%2FScreenshot-2016-08-15-at-20.34.46.png&hash=3a0b942c034982f789cf21490337101b5f8add45)
Unfortunately MacRumors reports a leaked chassis via Geekbar which it believes to be from the iPhone 7 shows the same cutouts for a physical home button, just like previous models.

What To Think?

Of course the obvious point to make is both leaks could be off the mark. In fact even if they are correct, Apple is known to make and test multiple iterations of each iPhone prior to settling on a design. So these could be prototype plans that have since been scrapped.

That said I would argue it is crucial Apple 'sells' the loss of the headphone jack as a gain overall by arguing it allows the iPhone 7 to take new, appealing steps forward. These include higher quality sound through the Lightning port, more space for a bigger battery, waterproofing and yes, stereo speakers and (in absence of a design overhaul) the compensation of an upgraded home button and internals.

If such features get chipped away, the loss of a headphone jack in conjunction with a third year of largely unchanged external design set against the backdrop of falling sales could spell trouble and imply stagnation. Yes, sales figures will still be on a scale of 'trouble' most smartphone makers would die for but it's trouble nonetheless.

In recent years Apple product launches have had little to no surprises. With some of the negativity surrounding the iPhone 7 (especially against the excitement for 2017's radical iPhone 8 ) let's hope Apple does have some surprises this year. Either way, we'll all find out very soon...

Hehe, I joining in on the grim pragmatism, but Apple has an uphill battle on their hands if they think the average consumer will readily embrace overpriced lightning headsets and switch to bluetooth only, over their 7 dollar 3.5mm sets.  Even more clumsy is how Apple will be trying to remediate this by selling a cumbersome (and likely expensive) addon to allow for a 3.5mm audio jack.

For the iOS musician, however, I think this can be a blessing in disguise.  The 3.5mm jack as a legit IO option is serviceable at best, and the market of lightning compatible 24 bit stand alone interfaces is equally limited to a few companies.  Now that audio IO for even general consumer use will more or less force 3rd parties to provide their own hardware for A to D and vice versa, we could see an explosion of cheap, low latency general purpose audio interfaces

The iPhone 7 is going to remove the headphone jack and come packaged with "the world's most anticipated dongle" that will let you use your existing headphones, according to analysts at Pacific Crest.

A series of rumours have claimed the iPhone 7 won't have a normal headphone jack, instead Apple is expected to remove that port entirely and encourage headphone manufacturers to release models that plug directly into the Lightning port (which you also use to charge your phone).

(Side note - and Apple obtains a Revenue stream from lightning Headphone vendors as they must pass Apple's "Made for Idevice"  (MFI) certification

https://developer.apple.com/programs/mfi/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MFi_Program
Of course, not everybody is going to have a pair of Lightning headphones. Lots of people are going to want to use their old-fashioned, non-Lightning headphones. Because of that, Apple is expected to include an adaptor in the box with the new iPhone 7, and Pacific Crest is calling it "the world's most anticipated dongle" in a note published on August 31.

The decision to drop the headphone port is already proving controversial (and it hasn't been officially announced yet). The Verge published an article titled "Taking the headphone jack off phones is user-hostile and stupid" and Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak said that "if it's missing the 3.5 mm earphone jack, that's going to tick off a lot of people."

I agree with what you said The Verge had said about it. It's hostile to users and it's stupid.

So sometimes I like to listen to one or two tunes on my phone, right before bed. It's sleepy and its battery's almost dead by then, so I have it in a charger. If I bought that new iPhone, I couldn't use my headphones and my charger at the same time. Even when I do use my phones, I'd have to use a 3rd piece like an adapter cable. Why would I want that? @#%$  that.

It's pretty f-ing stupid. The 3.5mm headphone jack IS the standard and to blatantly disregard that and/or enforce a 'walled garden' standard makes no sense.  It's almost as bad as non-upgradable memory on a computer.

Eliminating the 3.5mm Headset jack is motivated to support a waterproof iPhone.

And some idiot at Apple thinks everyone loves and uses Bluetooth headsets - and disregards the many professionals who use the Phones internal 24 bit DAC and 3.5mm jack when using bulk of iRig Pro , Apogee JAM , etc

(myself I can't use a Bluetooth headset for more than 20 minutes before I feel by brain frying from the RF  - so each person is unique)

And of course Bluetooth Headsets are useless for serious music creation due to the added audio latency.

With this trend - I predict a future iPhone that wins artistic clean design awards because the front looks just like the back because they eliminate the display - which will be sold as a separate Lightning port accessory

I'm told there will be a lightning to 3.5" adapter included for use with wired headphones.  Supposedly with much better audio quality than the output jack we are used to.

Some have said "what? okay, great but how do you charge the phone then when you are listening to music then?"  How indeed.

Maybe the battery is so good on this model that nobody is going to worry about it but.... some people never experience great battery life and charge more than they need to compulsively so they're always at 90% or so.  And they wonder why their battery life is subpar.

For listening in my car it's not a problem since I use a bluetooth adapter that connects to my car speakers but for headphones yes I have a "convertible" set of Sony monitoring cans that has both wired and bluetooth operation.  Guess which mode SOUNDS better (yes, it involves the wire).

Apple 'AirPods' to target high end of headphone market with custom 'Bluetooth-like' low-power tech
By Neil Hughes
Tuesday, September 06, 2016, 09:14 am PT (12:14 pm ET)

Apple's new wireless earbuds, expected to be announced this week as "AirPods," are said to feature a custom-designed wireless chip that will be "Bluetooth-like," carving out a share of the high-end headphone market and potentially paving the way for new smart home and smart car accessories.

Apple "AirPods" mockup via Twitter user Effah Hanie.

Details on Apple's unique wireless technology were revealed on Tuesday by well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities. In a new research note, a copy of which was obtained by AppleInsider, Kuo said that wireless headphones will play an important role for the headphone-jack-free "iPhone 7."

"Apple will likely have its own-designed Bluetooth-like communication chip and launch own-brand Bluetooth headphones targeting the high-end market, with Beats positioned in the midrange market," Kuo wrote. He did not give any potential indication of pricing.

With Apple expected to ditch the headphone jack, Kuo believes that wireless headphones will become the default option for many iPhone users. He sees Apple addressing that growing market with a two-pronged attack: Apple-branded "AirPods" on the high end, and a range of Beats-branded headphones for the middle of the market.

With its own custom "Bluetooth-like" chip, Kuo believes Apple could use proprietary low-power wireless communications for other functions beyond headphones, including smart home accessories and an intelligent automobile.

Kuo believes that Apple may in fact deviate from Bluetooth specifications, given what he called the company's "higher requirements for power-saving, communication specs and potential rapid growth." He sees Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company likely manufacturing the wireless communications chip for Apple, while Cheng Uei Precision and Inventec are expected to handle final assembly of the headphones.

Finally, Kuo said he does not expect Apple to bundle wireless headphones with this year's "iPhone 7" models. Leaked packaging has suggested Apple will instead bundle wired Lightning-connected EarPods in the box, as well as a headphone jack adapter for legacy 3.5-millimeter headphones.

The potential "AirPods" branding was leaked a few months ago through an Apple trademark filing. The name would be a combination of Apple's AirPlay wireless streaming technology and the EarPods headphones bundled with iOS devices.

In a separate note days earlier, the same analyst predicted the new "iPhone 7" will come in capacities of 32, 128 and 256 gigabytes, and will also boast an improved camera flash module for better low-light images. The next-generation handset is also expected to boast a True Tone display for better color representation of photos taken with new, improved camera modules.

All will be revealed on Wednesday, when Apple will hold a media presentation at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, Calif. AppleInsider will provide full coverage and analysis.

Apple announces water resistant iPhone 7: pressure sensing home button, dual cameras, jet black finish
By AppleInsider Staff
Wednesday, September 07, 2016, 11:24 am PT (02:24 pm ET)

This year's iPhone 7 series features a number of upgrades throughout, including a new jet black glossy finish option, a click-free pressure sensitive home button, and the best mobile cameras Apple has ever offered.

External changes

Apple put a particular emphasis on a new glossy "jet black" finish
Integrated antennas that are subtly built. It's also available in aluminum with a black logo, gold, silver, and rose gold.

The home button is also getting a makeover with this year's iPhone, making it completely reengineered with a force sensitive design and new generation "Taptic Engine."

It features quick actions like moving widgets, messages, notifications, and ringtones. It can also be programmed by third-party applications with a new Taptic Engine API.

It's also water resistant, keeping out liquid and dust that can prevent damage.

Camera shakeup

The iPhone 7 features optical image stabilization in all models with a larger f/1.8 aperture lens that lets in 50 percent more light. There's also a new six-element lens, and a high-speed 12-megapixel sensor that's 60 percent faster and 30 percent more energy efficient.

The True Tone flash features four LEDS that put out 50 percent more light. There's also a "flicker sensor" that reads the flickering of artificial lighting and can compensate for it in photos and videos.

The camera is powered by an Apple-designed image signal processor that detects faces and bodies, sets exposure, sets white balance, captures wide color, reduces noise, and much more.

The forward facing FaceTime HD camera has been upgraded to 7 megapixels, up from 5 megapixels. It also includes new pixel technology like deep trench isolation, and can capture wide color images and auto image stabilization.

The 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus ups the ante with two 12-megapixel cameras — one with a wide-angle lens, while the other is telephoto. This allows users to change the focal length of the lens, bringing optical zoom to the iPhone for the first time.

Combined with software zoom, images can be enhanced up to 10x, doubling that of the previous iPhone's capabilities. Optical zoom maxes out at 2x.

The dual-camera system is also capable of simulating shallow depth of field. It uses machine learning to recognize people and faces, then creates a depth map to keep people in focus while the background is blurry.

"This is a huge breakthrough in what can be done with a smartphone and photography," Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller said on Wednesday.

Depth of field capabilities were only previewed at Wednesday's event — they'll arrive for iPhone 7 Plus in a software update later this year.

Display, speakers

The display on the iPhone 7 series is 25 percent brighter, featuring a wide color display. Like the iPhone 6s, it also includes 3D Touch input.

To demonstrate the new wide color capabilities of the iPhone 7, a representative from Instagram took the stage, showing how an upcoming update to their app will leverage both the camera and enhanced screen.

Apple has also introduced stereo sound on the iPhone 7 for the first time.

What you need to know about the iPhone 7: No headphone jack but dramatically overhauled cameras
Hit the road, jack.

The rumors were true: Apple's next-generation iPhones, the 7 and 7 Plus, traded the headphone jack for Lightning EarPods. What this means for you: Now there's one port instead of two. The company is including Lightning-connected EarPods with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Apple is also including a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter in the box to avoid causing too much outrage.

So why that lack of a jack?

"It's been with us for a really long time," Phil Schiller said during Apple's iPhone presentation on Wednesday. "It comes down to courage—courage to move on, do something new that betters all of us."

That something new is a brand new wireless standard in the form of a product called Apple AirPods. The new W1 chip offers consistent playback that only starts playing when the pods are in your ear. You can double tap a pod to access Siri.

Both iPhone 7 models are water-resistant up to 1 meter for 30 minutes with an IP67 rating. Both pack new stereo speakers at the top and bottom into the same slim body as the 6s.

Aside from being splashproof, the iPhone 7's marquee feature is a dramatically improved camera. Both the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 and 5.5-inch 7 Plus have a wider f/1.8 aperture to capture more light, 6-element lens, high-speed 12-megapixel sensors, quad-LED True Tone flash, a new sensor to compensate for flickering lights, wide color capture, and optical image stabilization. The 7 Plus, as long rumored, has two cameras, both 12-megapixels, with two lenses. One is wide-angle, and the other is a 56mm telephoto lens. Both cameras have zoom.

Shallow depth of field, called bokeh, is something you can usually only achieve with a DSLR's full frame sensor or a giant lens. The 7 Plus camera accomplishes it easily—just tap the new Portrait option in the iOS Camera app coming in a free iOS update later this year to preview it automatically.

The 7, which now comes in black and jet black (matte vs. glossy) in addition to silver, gold, and rose gold, is moving from a mechanical Home button to a solid state Force Touch button with a Taptic Engine so you'll feel vibrations when you press it. Apple is opening the Taptic Engine to third-party developers with an API.

The iPhone 7's water resistance and overhauled camera are its marquee features, but the headphone jack removal is sure to be Apple's most controversial move since the switch from 30-pin to Lightning connectors back in 2012 (probably moreso). Apple sold adapters separately for $29 back then, but this time around the company is including an adapter in the box.

Thanks! ;D I asked myself often, during the past year, if I were better off switching to an iPhone because my Android phone fails utterly at a few basics, like showing me my reminders, or even a stinking Undo feature.

But now that it's confirmed, no headphone jack on iPhone, I can finally rule it out. More money to spend on guitar. Appreciate it!

http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/this-might-be-the-adapter-that-you-need-if-you-buy-an-iphone-7-642229

It feels like, already, more has been written about Apple doing away with the headphones jack on the iPhone 7 than any of the device's new features, but the story still has some way to run.

People quickly realised that, although Apple will include a 3.5-mm audio adapter in the box, the fact that this plugs into the Lightning port means that you won't be able charge your phone or plug in a peripheral (a MIDI controller, for example) at the same time.

However, Belkin has come up with what looks like it could be a solution to at least one of these problems: the bafflingly-named Lightning Audio + Charge RockStar adapter, which is basically a £35/$39 hub that turns one Lightning port into two. This enables you to plug in your Lightning headphones - or Lightning-to-3.5-mm adapter - and a charger at the same time.

This is sort of good news, though we're not sure if the adapter would help if you want to plug in some headphones and a USB controller at the same time. The Belkin website states that the device "supports one Lightning Audio device and one charger only," so using the second Lightning port for anything other than charging might be a no no.

Even if it does work, you might still end up needing not only the Belkin adapter, but also the 3.5-mm audio adapter that came with your iPhone 7, and a Lightning-to-USB adapter, both of which would plug into the Belkin one. That's three adapters in total - hardly an elegant workaround.

Apple is also offering a solution of sorts, too. The iPhone Lightning Dock sits on your desk and, as well as charging your phone, offers Lightning and 3.5mm audio ports. However, it's not portable, so is no use if you want to make music on the go. It costs £49/$49.

These are the options we've seen so far, but there are sure to be more on the way. Could a single Lightning-to-3.5-mm-jack-and-USB-and-Lightning adapter be on the cards? Let's hope so.

bad Timing?
------------
https://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-P.382/en

On July 29th without much fanfare ITU-T standardization committee approved a new "recommendation P.382". The standard specifies critical physical and electrical-acoustical characteristics for the universal headset interface with more than 4 terminals. To put it in other words, the geometry and technical requirements for 3.5mm audio plugs and jacks that have 5 (or more) separate communication channels were outlined and standardized. That's right, good old TRRS audio connector featured in  billions of audio devices used and produced anew each year is about to get a huge makeover.
Increasing a number of poles of the 3.5mm audio connector interface has been tried in the past several times. All attempts were not adopted by the market due to issues arising from backwards compatibility with existing 4 and 3 pole solutions currently in use.

However, just recently, MAX Solutions LLC began offering plugs and jacks that comply with P.382 recommendation while providing full backwards compatibility with legacy solutions. Backwards compatibility removes any friction from the market adaption standpoint. All legacy accessories can be connected to MAX TRRRS 5 pole jack without any issues. And vice versa, newly developed accessories with TRRRS plugs will be compatible with legacy 3 and 4 pole jacks. (5th channel notwithstanding)

So what is a big deal shall you say? What difference does one extra channel make?

Increasing a number of separate channels from 4 to 5 could have a huge impact on the market of affordable audio accessories. MAX TRRRS connector interface allows analogue two microphones and two transducers to be connected to a mobile device CODEC simultaneously. Therefore following new all analogue wired accessory applications become enabled:

Inexpensive earbuds with Active Noise Cancelling
Low cost/high performance Wired Hearing Aids and PSAPs
Binaural Recording and Video Conferencing, think Facetime, Skype etc.
Balanced Audio Listening and Recording straight to and from your smartphone
I sincerely hope audiophile community gets as excited about these opportunities as I am. The ground now seems to be staged for a wave of inexpensive all analogue wired advanced audio accessories to start penetrating the market.

It should be fascinating to watch how attempts to rid the world of one of the most popular connector interface in favor of a fragmentation (Apple via Lightning, USB-C) are received and compete with legacy TRRS and MAX's newly developed and standards compliant backwards compatible TRRRS solution.

There is only one(two) reason(s) for Apple to ditch the headphone socket: increased profit (room for haptic home button). Most of the moves they've done is to maximize profit. No SD-Card forces users to buy overpriced storage options from Apple. No headphone jack forces headphone makers to licence Apples lightning standard versus the licence free 3.5 mm. The "new" wireless is just an Apple way of not having to licence Bluetooth APTX, but force makers to use their new "magic" chip to achieve optimum wireless performance. Apple is a corporate equivalent to North Korean politics: Everything is perfect, we always knows what's best for you.

While being hard to shift and reach, Microsoft and Roland does at least try. Microsoft has gone from arrogant to less arrogant after firing Balmer and Elop.

The least arrogant of the big companies is Google. I have been on their campus before, they are like members of a really happy cult. They wear Google t-shirts, jeans, and tennis shoes. They smile a lot.

Microsoft is less arrogant than they used to be, but Windows 10 clearly gives the edge to what THEY want you to do the way THEY want you to do it. My wife hates it for that reason.
I like my iPad Pro very much, but I am wary of Apple.

That Google scenario sounds like an Apple store some 10 years ago. Regarding Windows 10: I can do all of my Windows 7 stuff in Windows 10.
Having used Amigas, Ataris, BeOS, Acorn, Tiki, multiple Linux iterations, every Apple OS since the 80's, every Windows OS, Dos, UNIX, I really don't see that Windows 10 is that limiting. Audio wise it's more efficient than any other Windows version I've tried and touch is a real plus for live/studio use.

The decision to axe the iPhone's built-in headphone port and simply put an adapter in the box has provoked reactions ranging from amusement to near panic. Why did they do it? Was it worth it? Will other manufacturers copy it? Today we're going to ignore all of these questions. Instead we're asking, How did they do it? And since we like taking things apart, we'll answer with some exploratory surgery and some X-rays.

All Your Digitals Are Belong To Us

Apple feels the 3.5 mm audio jack is an antique whose time has passed. But we're not all prepared to shell out for new headphones just yet, so to ease the transition Apple gave iPhone 7 owners a deal worthy of Oprah—you get a headphone adapter! And you get a headphone adapter! Everyone gets a headphone adapter!

Separately, this little adapter retails for $9.00—making it pretty much the cheapest thing in the Apple store, where you can drop $35 for a simple screen protector. So, you'd probably think a $9 dongle doesn't have much going on.

Imagine our surprise, then, when our pals over at Creative Electron gave Apple's new adapter the X-ray treatment:

Thanks to Creative Electron for this X-ray image of Apple's audio adapter.
There's actually a lot going on in there. As expected, one end is a simple female 3.5 mm headphone jack, and the other end is a male Lightning connector. But what's all that silicon around the Lightning connector end? Most of the retail space near the connector is taken up by a single mystery IC.

Image courtesy of the amazing folks at Creative Electron.
We needed a closer look. Thankfully, long-time iFixit contributor and gadgeteer extraordinaire oldturkey03 sliced his adapter open so we could all get a peek inside. He uncovered that mystery IC by the Lightning connector, marked 338S00140 A0SM1624 TW—which doesn't tell us much, other than it's an Apple part number.

Thanks to longtime iFixit community member OldTurkey03 for his teardown of the audio adapter.
While the official purpose of this IC is unknown, at minimum we can guess that it contains a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and amplifier, and its counterpart, an analog-to-digital-converter (ADC).

We know this because audio accessories like earphones (as well as human ears) need analog signals to work—and unlike ye olde analog headphone jack, Apple's Lightning connector is all digital. The DAC bridges that gap. By the same logic, this chip must also contain an ADC circuit to convert the analog signal from your headphones' built-in mic into something that can pass back through the Lightning port so your iPhone can make use of it.

In past iPhones like the 6s, both DAC and ADC functions were handled internally. The analog inputs and outputs from the headphone jack (and other components) were wrangled by a single chip on the logic board, a custom Apple/Cirrus Logic IC labeled 338S00105. (In the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, that same exact chip still exists—because even without a headphone jack, the phone still has to shake hands with the built-in loudspeakers and microphones, all of which use analog signals.)

Apple/Cirrus Logic 338S00105 audio codec in the iPhone 6s (left) and iPhone 7 (right).
Is All Well In Appleville?

The moment Apple's plans for a headphone adapter first came to light, audiophiles began questioning whether such a tiny dongle—and, presumably, the DAC + amp buried inside—could possibly supply a quality audio experience. Speculation was that, in order to fit aboard the adapter, the audio hardware would have to be so small that corners would inevitably be cut.

Well, here's a visual comparison of the audio chip on the iPhone 7's logic board, photographed right next to the exposed chip on the new adapter:

This isn't an oranges-to-oranges comparison however, because each of these chips handles more than just DAC/ADC. The larger chip is also a codec, and is not believed to contain an amplifier (there are three amps located elsewhere on the iPhone 7 logic board).

In short, a more scientific approach is called for. So upon its release, hi-fi enthusiasts at German computer tech magazine c't ran a battery of sound quality tests on Apple's new adaptor. After taking baseline measurements from the old-school, built-in headphone jacks on an iPhone 6s and iPad Air, they compared the adapter's output on iPhone 6s, iPad Air, and iPhone 7:

Hi-fi enthusiasts at German computer tech magazine c't ran a battery of sound quality tests on Apple's new adaptor and broke down the results.
The takeaway seems to be that in some areas, the sound quality does measure a bit worse from the adapter than we might be accustomed to. For instance, when playing an uncompressed 16-bit audio file on the iPhone 6s, the dynamic range dropped from 99.1 dB at the headphone jack to 97.3 dB at the adapter. Though keep in mind, this slightly lower measurement is still higher than the theoretical maximum you get from a compact disc (which is 96 dB). So, is it a difference you are likely to notice? If you sit in a quiet room with a really, really good pair of headphones ... and you're a canine, the answer is: maybe.

But it appears Apple's engineers did their job, and this tiny adapter performs better than most people expected or even thought possible.

Why did they do it? Was it worth it? Will other manufacturers copy it? Give us your thoughts.

I suspect the next iPads will also remove the 3.5mm TRRS jack

but compare the iPad AIR audio performance with TRRS Jack vs iPhone 7 with the new audio dongle

the old iPad AIR with TRRS jack has roughly twice the  Voltage dbV and  +7dB improved SNR

IPhone 7 measured: Audio adapter delivers poorer sound

TEST & CONSULTATION TEST

Hartmut Gieselmann  16.09.2016  Audio , Audio Adapter , iPhone 7 , headphones , Lightning , Lightning adapter , Measurement , Music , quality , test
The wegrationalized jack of the iPhone 7 currently heats the mind. It should be a short lightning adapter. But instead of improving the sound, the signal quality deteriorates, as our measurements show.

One can argue about whether Apple's decision to the phone jack, iPhone 7 omit a step forward or backward is. If you like headphones with cables, you can arrange with the small adapter cable, which Apple attaches to the smartphone. Even with a loss of Lightning adapter the damage is manageable, finally you can buy a replacement for 9 euros.

It is indisputable, however, that the sound quality has deteriorated with the introduction of the adapter. We checked the short cable stub in our audio lab. The adapter was used on the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, on an iPhone 6S and on an iPad Air. For comparison, we measured on the iPhone 6S and iPad Air the signal quality of the internal jack socket.

The results are clear: On the iPhone 6S, the dynamics deteriorate by 4.5 dB (A), if one plays a 24-bit music file over the adapter instead of the internal jack. On the iPad Air the signal deteriorates by 3.8 dB (A). Even with 16-bit music files the losses are noticeable, if not so drastically: Here the dynamics worsen by 1.8 dB (A) on the iPhone and by 3.1 dB (A) on the iPad.

In the measurements, it was irrelevant whether the adapter on the iPhone 7, 7 Plus or iPhone 6S was connected: The results are equal to the decimal places. It was noticeable, however, that the adapter on the iPad significantly better results than on the iPhone. This may indicate that there is no separate D / A converter in the adapter, but the audio signal is already transmitted in analog form via the Lightning socket. Since the Lightning chips in the cable with their opponent in the iPhone / iPad negotiate in each case, which would be transferred, would be quite possible. As long as Apple is silent on the subject, only further tests can bring certainty.

Higher levels only for low-impedance headphones

If the current jack socket is used as a line connection, the iPad Air delivers almost twice as high voltage as the iPhone 6S with 0.5 volts (-6 dBV) with just under 1.0 volts (-0.2 dBV). Also here the adapter looks worse, around around 1 dBV lets the output voltage decrease. However, when the output jack is loaded with a low-impedance headphone (16 Ohm), the voltage on the adapter does not drop as much as before with the internal jacks. If the latter had to accept a drop of 1 to 2 dBV, the voltage at the adapter remains largely stable and only breaks by 0.2 to 0.3 dBV.

According to these measured values, Apple has significantly reduced the output resistance of the adapter compared to the jacks of the iPhone 6S and iPad Air. If it is still less than 5 ohms at the iPhone-6S jack and 1.6 ohms at the iPad, it has shrunk to about half an ohm in the adapter.

For headphones with 30 ohms it makes no difference in the volume, whether they are operated at the adapter or the internal socket of the iPhone 6s / iPad Air. Headphones with lower impedance play louder on the adapter, higher impedance earphones (up to 80 ohms are recommended on the iPad) are louder at the internal jacks of the iPone 6S and iPad Air.

However, the distortion factor is not influenced by this. Through our entire series of measurements, even with high-resistance resistors of 30, 80, 250 and 600 Ohm, it remained constant at very good 0.001 and 0.002 percent, respectively.

44.1 kHz better than 96 kHz

Curious were the measurement results with different sampling rates. ITunes can not play files with 96 kHz under iOS, but only with 44.1 and 48 kHz. This has a good reason, because the D / A converters of the iOS devices are only designed to 48 kHz. Nevertheless, there are some iOS programs that still play 96 kHz files, such as the DAW Cubasis and the file program Goodreader (with which we ultimately completed all measurements under iOS10). However, both programs convert the 96 kHz files before and cut the high frequencies with a low-pass filter. Cubasis already sets the blade at about 18 kHz, the goodreader only at 19 kHz. The best frequency values were obtained at 44.1 kHz, where all device frequencies were transferred to 21 kHz. In all cases, the frequency response was sub- stantially linear.

Vergrößern 96 kHz files, however, are already cut at lower frequencies depending on the software, while the Goodreader is about 19 kHz. Can hear that but most children and young
image. C't
The optimum sound quality can be achieved on an iPhone / iPad, with music files encoded at 44.1 kHz and 24 bits. However, while the higher 24-bit word range versus 16-bit at the output of the iPhone 6S and iPad Air is still a dynamic improvement of 5 to 7 dB (A), the difference in the new Lightning Adapter shrinks to just 2.3 dB IPhone and 6 dB at the iPad Air together.

So it is not worthwhile to encode music with 24 instead of 16 bits for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, because the adapter output negates the quality advantage. In order to be able to hear a 16-bit advantage with 24-bit music on the iPhone 7, you would have to output the music digitally over another audio interface or digitally connected headphones. Top-of-the-line models have achieved 24-bit up to 122 dB (A) dynamics and voltages of up to 10 volts in recent years (so far exceed the voltage required for headphone and line connections).

Conclusion

With the saving of the jack socket, Apple deteriorates the output quality of the music on the iPhone. While the output sockets of the iPhone 6S and iPad Air itself perform well compared to professional audio interfaces, the output on the new Lightning adapter of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus reaches only the note satisfactorily.

The differences should be noticeable in comparison with similar connected headphones in the price class from 100 euros, especially with uncompressed music files with 24 bits. In the case of lossy compressed music pieces (MP3, AAC), most users will hardly notice a difference. Bluetooth headphones and digital audio interfaces are not affected by the deterioration.

Update 20/09/16: Inszwischen we made further hearing tests, the rather unusual properties of the adapter encouraged to light. In summary, we have them in the article

IPhone 7: Audio adapter can amplify noise

Apple's new audio adapter for the Lightning port of the iPhone 7 heats up the mind: in more accurate listening tests, we found more features of the D / A converter, which can lead to more noise.

After last Friday initially the signal quality of the new Lightning Audio Adapter measured and with the internal audio jack of the iPhone 6s and iPad Air had compared, we have the adapter now open and made more hearing tests to analyze the sound characteristics more precisely.

Behind the Lightning plug, Apple has installed a Lightning chip with the code "338S00140 0KR1618 TW". It is responsible for the communication via the lightning port and, according to our knowledge so far, has its own D / A converter unit. The analogue signals for a stereo headphone and a microphone for the use of headsets are connected to the 3.5-pin 3.5-mm jack plug of the adapter.

D / A converter operates non-linearly
The built-in converter has some unusual features, depending on whether it is connected to an iPhone or iPad. In terms of measuring technology, it achieves poorer dynamics compared to the built-in socket. With 99.6 dB (A) on the iPhone and 102.9 dB (A) on the iPad, it is still better than what is commonly described as "CD quality", the internal jacks of the iPhone 6S and the iPad Air delivered 104.1 dB (A) and 106.7 dB (A), but significantly better values, which with the better professional audio interfaces quite well.

Under a microscope the label of the lightning chip is visible in the audio adapter: 338S00140 0KR1618 TW. Its exact specifications are unknown to us so far. Vergrößern
Image: c't
In the hearing test, however, it was shown that the converter in the Lightning adapter does not take advantage of its dynamics because it is not linear in contrast to the internal converter of the iPhone and iPad at the lower end of the loudspeaker spectrum. Thus, in the listening test level, it outputs approximately the same level as around -86 dBFS as with -120 dBFS.

The effects correspond to those of a very low adjusted parallel compressor. So you can hear extremely low noise with the adapter, but these are compressed from a certain threshold, so that you no longer perceive loudness differences. However, the dithering noise that is often used in 16-bit recordings can therefore be heard louder than the internal audio socket of the iPhone 6S and iPad Air. Their converters also operate linearly in the lower volume range, so that signals are also beyond -86 dBFS Quieter. We were able to hear levels of up to -95 dBFS on the iPhone 6S and -102 dBFS on the iPad Air with a low-impedance in-ear headphone (Beyerdynamic DTX-100, 12 Ohm) and perceive volume differences. With other headset models, these perceptible levels may be different.

When comparing the perceived volume of normal pop songs, we could not make any obvious loudness differences despite the measurement-technical differences in the level of the adapter and the internal socket, whether with 12 ohm in-ear headphones or 70 ohm headphones ( Sennheiser HD-25).

Frequency response and harmonic distortion are exemplary both on the internal sockets and on the adapter.

Conclusion
Apple Lightning audio adapter reinforced by our listening tests signals are quieter than about -86 dBFS. This may cause a little more noise to be heard on some recordings, such as when analog tape recordings were used, or when a 16-bit music file was often dithered, as usual with mastering.

However, this can only be noticed if they tip their ears, use high-quality headphones with high efficiency or when they connect the audio adapter to a stereo system or active loudspeakers via their line input. For the listeners to understand this at home, the computer magazine c't will publish corresponding test files for download in its upcoming issue 21/16, which will be released on October 1st.

In normal everyday life, when a user hears MP3 or AAC files with already heavily compressed pop or rock music, he will not notice the difference. From developer circles it was heard that manufacturers are now working on high-quality audio adapters for the Lightning connection, which should also satisfy audiophile users. With the elimination of the very good internal audio jack on the iPhone 7, Apple can stimulate the demand for such high-quality external converters.

Update 21/09/16: We have now checked against a Lightning extension cable if between iOS device and Lightning audio adapter analog audio signals are transmitted or not. Even after several passes with all possible combinations of the eight Lightning contacts, we have not succeeded in recognizing a usable audio signal at the oscilloscope.

We could only catch a very weak and distorted signal (under 20 mV), which obviously comes from a discussion of the adapter connected to the headphone. This review is only available with a low-impedance headphone and disappears as soon as it is changed with a high-impedance line connection. From this, we conclude that a D / A converter is inserted in the Lightning adapter.

We also found that the Lightning audio adapter is not compatible with all headsets. With original Apple headsets and licensed MFI models (Made for iPhone), both microphone and volume setting work. Other iPhone-compatible headsets without MFI certification, whose volume setting had so far worked with the analog input jack, can no longer adjust the volume on the Lightning adapter.

Belkin has introduced an adapter that allows you to charge iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus while using a cable headphone. The "Lightning Audio + Charge RockStar" has two lightning jacks.

Using another adapter Belkin wants to solve the problem that the iPhone 7 is no longer possible, simultaneous charging during wired music listening. The " Lightning Audio + Charge Rockstar " said adapter is plugged into the Lightning port on the iPhone and keeps himself two Lightning jacks willing to let on to plug it the charging cable as well as the included Lightning EarPods. The accessory was developed in close cooperation with Apple, according to the manufacturer.

One could also use Apple's lightning-on-jack adapter to attach a headphone with 3.5 mm jack. The "Lightning Audio + Charge RockStar" does not make it easy to plug in two Lightning headphones if you want to listen to music together - it is only for an audio device and a charging cable, Belkin explains.

The adapter supports 24-bit audio output up to 48 kHz and charging up to 12 watts of iPhone as iPad. The accessory can also be used with Apple's Smart Battery Case. The "Lightning Audio + Charge RockStar" is to come on October 10 for 40 euros in the trade.

Due to the first missing jack socket, only the handle for wireless headphones remains to be charged when listening to music. This also corresponds to Apple's vision of the future with wireless devices that automatically record connection - a feature that the newly introduced AirPods and first Beats models with W1 chip are intended to provide. The AirPods are expected to enter the market by the end of October.

Computerworld | Oct 26, 2016 5:32 AM

I climbed into my son's car the other day, an older Saab with a fairly decent sound system. I had an iPhone 7 Plus in my pocket, but I didn't bother fishing it out. I know the phone comes with a Lightning port adapter that lets you use a standard 3.5mm cable to connect up to a car stereo. The adapter is about the size of a walnut, but I normally connect up to my car using Bluetooth and don't carry the adapter with me. It was a "gotcha" because we really wanted to listen to the new Wilco album.

These "gotchas" are annoying when it comes to technology, which is supposed to enable us and not make things totally unusable. Rumors are flying this week that a new MacBook Pro won't come with normal USB ports,
http://metro.co.uk/2016/10/24/is-apple-about-to-kill-off-the-usb-port-6212933/
but we've already crossed this threshold. The HP Spectre only has USB-C ports, the smaller ones used for data transfer and power. HP includes an adapter (a cable that's about four inches long) so you can use older USB devices. I'm pretty sure I've already misplaced it.

What happens when we move from one incredibly common technology to a newer one that is no longer compatible? Terrible things. Sudden annoyances. Frustrations. When I wrote about the iPhone 7 and how it doesn't use a normal 3.5mm headphone jack anymore, dozens of people commented on Twitter and by email about how annoying that is. Older devices like headphones and speakers won't work anymore without the adapter, which is easy to lose. Worse, there's an issue with quality. Many Bluetooth earbuds sound like an AM radio under water. You can always upgrade to premium-grade headphones, but what if you don't want to spend the cash?

With USB-C, the problem is much more annoying. There are hundreds of thousands of USB devices on the market. In my office alone, I count at least two dozen -- printers, headsets, a smarthome device, a mouse. Every single one of these devices worked perfectly fine before. Now, I need to use an adapter with laptops that only offer USB-C. When I travel, who knows? If I want to connect to a printer in a remote office, I can likely use Wi-Fi, unless the printer doesn't offer that.

This isn't an article about the good old days, though. It's a problem when there's a transition for reasons other than actual consumer benefit. Maybe HP and Apple want to make thinner and lighter laptops. Maybe there's more room now for the battery in an iPhone 7. Fine. But the industry hasn't caught up. Most earbuds and headphones still sound terrible when they stream Bluetooth audio, and many older cars still provide only an analog input. Most printers provide only a standard USB cable. We need to move on from USB and 3.5mm jacks, but maybe there's a better way to do that.

On a laptop, it makes more sense to add a couple of USB-C ports but keep at least one standard USB port around. Or, maybe the USB-C can use an adapter that fits over the port and stays there, not a cable like the one that's included with the Spectre. With the iPhone, I was surprised when I found out that Apple isn't ready to release the new AirPods (they came out later this month). So, that means the iPhone 7 offers half of the answer when it comes to music streaming. (They do include earbuds that connect directly to the Lightning port, but it's useless with any other device.)

What consumer want is a bridge, a transition period where we can use the gadgets we already own and like and transition into the brave new world. That's never quite what the tech companies want, though.

My advice: It's time to figure out how to make new tech works with the old.

Apple's cord situation is completely out of control
Kif Leswing,Business Insider 6 hours ago Comments  Like  Reblog on Tumblr  Share  Tweet  Email
apple macbook pro vs macbook air size
(Apple)
Apple's newest computer, the MacBook Pro, looks pretty great: It's got fast chips, a good screen, MacOS, and a new kind of touchscreen keyboard it's calling the Touch Bar.

But I'm personally worried that buying the new MacBook Pro will doom me to carrying around various dongles for years, or as long as I'm in Apple's ecosystem. And you should be worried about that too.

In the company's zeal to move to next-generation connectors and future-proof devices, Apple's created a morass of different cords, dongles, and standards.

Take a user who has an iPhone 7 and new MacBook Pro. That's Apple's core customer: someone with disposable income who wants the best computers.

This person needs to think hard about what cords they are going to carry from day to day. The iPhone and MacBook Pro use different chargers, so that person would have to carry both. iPhones use Apple's proprietary Lightning charger. The new MacBooks use the relatively new open USB-C standard.

(That's not a big deal, although it's worth pointing out that if this person had a Google Pixel phone instead of an iPhone, their phone and computer could use the same charger. That's not very elegant, Apple.)
iPhone 7 headphone dongle
(Hollis Johnson/Business Insider)

Things get worse when you consider headphones. The new MacBook Pro has a headphone jack, so you can plug basically any pair of headphones into it. The iPhone 7, as you've probably heard, does not.

Customers can use the dongle that comes with the iPhone 7 to use their laptop headphones with their iPhone. But if someone wants to use the Lightning Earpods that come with the iPhone 7, there's no way to plug them into your laptop, unless Apple makes another dongle — some kind of male USB-C-to-female-Lightning adapter.

Of course, what Apple wants you to do is buy its new AirPods, which cost $159, and need to be charged too. AirPods haven't gone on sale yet because Apple says they're not ready.

And finally, just try to charge your phone from your laptop using the cord that comes with your iPhone. You can't — unless you have yet another adapter (this one USB-C to USB), which Apple will sell you for $19. A USB-C to Lightning Cable costs $25.

(Apple)

Apple's insistence on using Lightning as its proprietary standard on its phone makes its choice to commit to USB-C on Mac a confusing one.

I understand that ports change and technology has to change with it. But the whole reason to adopt open standards like USB-C is so things can be standardized. And USB-C can do a lot of different things, like power a monitor — so it can certainly charge a phone, handle headphones, or anything else Lightning does.

It's madness. Apple's head of design Jony Ive said last month that "we believe in a wireless future." But my immediate future — deciding whether or not I buy a new MacBook Pro — looks to be full of different cords and dongles.

What did the SD card ever do to Apple?

What you see before you, friends, is Apple's brand new MacBook Pro, in the silver $1,799 configuration and space gray $1,499 variant without the cool new Touch Bar. Neither of them has an SD card slot. SD cards are those awesome things that practically every dedicated camera in the world nowadays stores photos on. Fujifilm, Sony, Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, Panasonic... the only thing all of these photo companies agree on is that SD is the storage medium of choice. And now Apple has decided to ditch it.

SD CARD SLOT > SD CARD ADAPTER

Apple has always been a photographer's close ally. In the olden days when Windows PCs and generic monitor makers didn't care about color fidelity, Apple was the pioneer that said that colors matter. Many of the MacBook Pro's most devoted fans are indeed photographers. And now the MacBook Pro doesn't have an SD card slot anymore. Cue more dongles and adapters.

I understand Apple's reasoning and broader aim: the Cupertino company isn't just dispatching the SD card slot; it's also doing away with the older Thunderbolt port, HDMI, the classic USB jacks, and basically everything that isn't USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 or the headphone jack. Isn't that fun? Apple is showing loyalty to the 3.5mm headphone connector that it considered so retrograde for the iPhone. Honestly, though, nobody else has four Thunderbolt 3 ports on a laptop yet, all of them allowing you to charge the laptop and obviating the MagSafe power plug.

It's just that the SD card is nowhere near being deprecated. Has anyone at Apple tried using the wireless transfer apps that camera makers now offer? They're utterly and universally atrocious. If we could transfer photos off cameras wirelessly, we'd already be doing it. But the fact is that even with so many wireless "options" on offer, we all rely on the tried-and-true method of pulling the SD card out of camera and popping it into our laptop. For many of us, the act of doing this has turned into muscle memory.

The MacBook Pro might be an awesome computer, and its Touch Bar certainly looks like a promising (and actually rather courageous) alteration. But it won't be the perfect computer. You can't take away a basic, fundamental capability and pretend that life will somehow, at some point, be better without it. I was sure that I'd be upgrading to the new MacBook Pro as soon as it became available, but now my confidence is shaken. Can Apple please stop taking away things I like from the devices I want?

Does not work.
I purchased this product to listen to music and charge at the same time in my car. As soon as I connect it to the car radio cable all I hear is static and the music sounds poor and hard to hear over the static. Will be returning.

Apple insider says demand is dwindling because the iPhone 7 is boring
Chris Smith,BGR News 8 hours ago Comments  Like  Reblog on Tumblr  Share  Tweet  Email
iphone-7-2
Have we reached peak iPhone 7 already? Apple kicked off iPhone 7 sales almost two months ago and saw incredible demand in spite of critics, who said the device was a "boring" update. Apple sold out of initial stock rather quickly and struggled to meet demand both in the US and in the numerous other markets where the phone was released. But an Apple insider with a very good track record when reporting on Apple's every move now claims that we're already past peak iPhone 7, and sales will now begin to decline.

DON'T MISS: The 5 best new features coming to your iPhone in iOS 10.2

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a note to investors that demand for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus has peaked, and Apple's suppliers will decrease their iPhone shipments by as 5% to 15% in November and December. Is the new iPhone boring after all?

"As the 4.7-inch iPhone 7, which accounts for a higher share of iPhone shipments, is in stock in the main global markets, we believe overall iPhone shipments have peaked," Kuo said in the note seen by MacRumors. "We think iPhone shipment forecasts will be revised down due to: (1) lower-than-expected demand due to a lack of spec surprises in the 4.7-inch iPhone 7; and (2) shorter times for delivering online orders of 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus, which implies slowing demand. We note that the out-of-stock phenomenon also results from fixed capacity, and is not only due to robust demand."

Kuo also said that the out-of-stock phenomenon that Apple experienced after the launch of the iPhone 7 can be explained by limited supply rather than robust demand. The analyst expects Apple sell fewer iPhones on-year in the fist quarter of 2017 due to lower-than-expected demand and increased competition in China.

Early reports indicated that Apple's iPhone 7 launch may be comparable to the iPhone 6s' launch last year. Apple, however, did not confirm these estimates, as it stopped announcing iPhone launch numbers. A different report a few days ago indicated that Android has been making gains at the expense of the iPhone. At the same time, however, there are more documented Android switchers than ever.

It's the 128GB model

Today I read this , I'll keep you posted on the outcome , rumor is I may obtain a $175 credit/refund

That lightning to 3.5 mm...
The first adapter to use momentum to break your lightning port?

I've yet to come across a close to acceptable solution to this unnecessary problem. Apple claims there's no space because of thickness restrictions on the iPad PRO 2018, but my iPod Nano 4 is 0.1 mm thicker and has one. 5.9 mm vs 6.0 mm.

Bluetooth headphones - latency and amplifier hiss. Have tried AirPods, Galaxy Buds, Audiofly AF180 with BT, Jabra Move, Jensen, Beats etc, etc. All have that amp on max with variable input feel with a rather high noise floor at moderate listening levels. Some are worse than others. Tech development is going full steam ahead, but I can't help but feel that audio has taken giant leaps in the wrong direction.
