I've been looking at alternative ways to bounce around between sounds - I find that footwwitches are fine for maybe 10-20 sounds, but more than that and navigation gets rather complicated.  I'm keen on these 8x8 launch pad type devices - whilst it would involve taking a hand off the guitar for an instant, the reduction in aping Riverdance on an FCB probably reduces the switching time anyway.  However, I really could do without the complexity of hooking one up via Ableton - would much rather have something sending 5-pin MIDI out, or otherwise controlling the 99 without requiring a computer.

Anyone have experience with using this kind of device, and anyone know if a non-laptop-based solution exists?

The soon to be released Guitar Wing, could be mapped for patch change, and more. It sends wireless midi, attaches easily to your guitar, but I assume there will need to be some. Sort of USB to 5 pin midi device. Maybe the USB connection on the VG99 will work with it, as is.

I am interested in doing patch changes this way as well.

Couple thoughts

I can duplicate bulk of Guitar wing functionality using my 2009 ipod Touch mounted with velco to my guitar and run any number of MIDI Designer / Lemur type MIDI control apps. This explains why I never sell my old IOS devices, as I simply re-purpose them as dedicated hardware controllers.

And (with luck) sometime this year hopefully our community (and Gumtown) can resurrect the wireless MIDI controller described here:
