Apple's updates its mobile DAW with features from its desktop software

GarageBand for iOS 2 2GarageBand for iOS now comes with a visual EQ.
After Apple acquired UK software developer Camel Audio, it wasn't long before the company's acclaimed Alchemy synth resurfaced in Logic Pro X 10.2, and now it's about to land on your iPhone and iPad as part of the GarageBand for iOS 2.2 update.

This isn't the first time we've seen Alchemy on an iOS device, of course - before Apple came calling, Camel Audio had Alchemy Mobile on its roster - but now it's available within GarageBand and has the look and feel of the app's other Touch Instruments. It comes with more than 150 "Apple-designed" presets, which promise to cover a wide range of stylistic bases.

With the number of Touch Instruments in GarageBand growing, Apple has also introduced a redesigned sound browser in version 2.2, with the aim of making it easier to explore what's on offer and find the sound you're looking for.

There are new recording options, too: Multi-Take Recording enables you to capture multiple passes, audition them and choose the best one (a feature that will be familiar to users of Apple's desktop DAWs) while the redesigned Audio Recorder includes both fun "one-tap" vocal effects and more serious tools that provide pitch correction, distortion and delay.

Speaking of 'serious', there's an expanded range of mixing effects, including a visual EQ. You can also bring third-party Audio Unit effect processors to the party.

The GarageBand for iOS 2.2 update is available on the Apple App Store, and is free for existing users. If you don't have GarageBand already, you can buy it for £3.99/$4.99.

If you're a Logic user, make sure you also check out the Logic Pro X 10.3 update, which has just been released as well.

Logic Pro X 10.3 is here, bringing Touch Bar support and creative new features
By Ben Rogerson (Computer Music, Future Music) 4 hours ago Tech

Apple's heavy-hitting Mac DAW gets another significant update

Apple Logic Pro X 10 3Logic Pro X 10.3 looks familiar, but also slightly different.
While many DAW developers like to unveil 'full' version updates on a regular basis, Apple prefers to give us a steady stream of point releases. Logic Pro X 10.1 and 10.2 were both significant revisions, and the same could be said of version 10.3, particularly if you own a Touch Bar-equipped MacBook Pro.

This comes with a tweaked GUI that's designed to look more contemporary and be more legible, while the Touch Bar can be used to navigate your project in a timeline overview. As in GarageBand, it gives you access to volume and Smart Controls, and you have the option to turn it into a musical keyboard (complete with various custom scale options) or a set of drum pads, too. The Touch Bar can also be customised to allow access to your favourite keyboard shortcuts.

An Alternative view

Back in the software itself, Logic Pro X 10.3 includes Track Alternatives - you can now create and switch between different playlists of regions and edits on any track. The idea is that this will make it easier to experiment with different ideas or to chart the evolution of a track.

There's also Selection-based Processing, which can can be used to apply plugin effects processing to any selected audio region, or to multiple regions. There could be creative benefits here, though this additional flexibility could come in handy when you're mixing, too.

On a more technical level, there's now a 64-bit summing engine and the number of available busses has risen by 192. True stereo panning, meanwhile, gives you discrete control of stereo signals.

Finally, Apple is giving Logic Pro X 10.3 users an easy way of working on their projects in GarageBand for iOS (version 2.2 of which has just been announced) when they're on the move. You can now save a bounced-down GarageBand-compatible version to the iCloud, and then add additional tracks on your iPhone or iPad. Once the resulting project is saved back to the iCloud, these parts will appear in the main Logic project on the Mac, so that they can be worked on further.

The Logic Pro X 10.3 update is free for existing users and should be available imminently from the Mac App Store. The price for new customers is £150/$199. We'll be getting hands-on with the update and reporting back very soon...

Please give Henrik a wave from me in Germany if you see him  :)- we're still working through software connection issues; I agree with Dr. Bill's, yours and others assessments regarding how chintzy their software is.  That said, Henrik is sticking with me and trying hard to help me get it resolved, which I appreciate.
Take what you need, put back a bit more, leave the place behind you better than it was before :-)

The experience of the NAMM show is something that every musician should experience if at all possible. It's an insane 4 days inside a convention center with a literal city's worth of people, almost all musicians, and almost every brand of musical equipment, and much more.

But NAMM is not for the faint of heart – or the ill-prepared. Proper preparation is absolutely key in having a good time. You'll spend many long hours every day walking around a massive building, so there's a lot of things you'll need to know. We asked a bunch of people at the show last year what their advice was for people going to the show – their "NAMM Hacks" – and they had some really good ideas. With the show just a week away, we want to make sure that you're going in prepared!

Make sure to follow us for the most complete NAMM 2017 coverage on the internet.

For even more good ideas, check out our previous NAMM videos:

Neunhaber's Iconoclast speaker emulator: A box of tricks for guitarists?

1/1 | Neunhaber Iconoclast Pedal
The Neunhaber Iconoclast pedal is a stereo effects unit that's designed to make your guitar signal sound as though it is being fed through a real speaker. While the top of the unit has a few simple controls, there's more to this little box than meets the eye.
Speaking the truth

Many players, myself included, use guitar preamps and effects, and record or play live using such devices. One common problem with speaker-less setups is that a guitar amp's speaker is an intrinsic part of your guitar tone. And no amount of boutique preamps and cool pedals will fix the lack of a real speaker cone doing its thing. Thus, a product like the Neunhaber Iconoclast spealer emulator pedal has a place in many player's rigs.
Iconoclast

Although the pedal concept is around stereo operation, it'll do mono as well without problems. You can also listen via just the headphone output, making this unit useful for silent practice with your favourite pedals, too.
What at first appears to be a 3-band EQ marked Low, Mid and High, turns out to be a little more involved. The Low control adjusts the type and size of the virtual cabinet, while the Mid will knob affects the "interaction" of amp and speaker. High is a cut off-type control which, Neunaber say, "reproduce a wide range of speaker types". The Noise Gate is designed to filter hum and noise from long effect chains.
Software

These days, being able to tweak controls in software is becoming more and more common. Neunaber offer a free PC and Mac editor for this porpose. Just attach the Iconoclast via the Micro-USB port to your computer. This will appeal for those of you that like to have more more than just a knob to twiddle with.
neunhaber-iconoclast
Iconoclast Software gives you the 'full potential' of your Iconoclast Speaker Emulator, for all you tweakers!
Using the software, you can actually delve a lot further into the Iconoclast and adapt what it's doing to suit your taste. There are controls for the response frequencies and even the way the Gate control reacts! But, unfortunately, you cannot load your own virtual IRs (that's Impulse Responses – or virtual speaker models) into the pedal. Yet I'm impressed you can tweak it further at all, so that's not a deal-breaker for me.
Check out the videos I have attached below to hear what the Iconoclast can achieve. It's easier to hear the difference this kind of effect makes than read about someone like me trying to explain how it affects your tone. The demo sounds good to my ear, and I could do with adding this to my setup! It could be a really useful little tool.
RRP USD $249

Maximum expressive power with minimal space

The EV - 30 is an expression pedal of space - saving design that is best suited for incorporation into a pedal board system that is hard to secure space. Adopted a robust and stable aluminum-die-cast enclosure that can withstand severe tours and violent performance on stage. Even though the size is compact, BOSS tradition's reliability and durability are intact. Moreover, it is realizing smooth and delicate parameter control by the special mechanism of the movable part by original design. Two EXP OUT terminals are carried and two devices can be controlled with one pedal, further reducing the space. Combined with compact pedals with expression input terminals, multi-effects, switchers, etc., it is one of professional specs that will broaden the range of expressive power.

Baritone Variax  Shuriken

Line 6—exhibiting in Marriott Grand Ballroom A-D at this week's 2017 Winter NAMM Show—has introduced the new Variax Shuriken guitar, co-designed by guitarist Steve "Stevic" MacKay of Twelve Foot Ninja. From the company:

Featuring a baritone scale length, advanced Variax HD technology and a bold new body shape, Variax Shuriken delivers unique feel, crisp tone and unmatched versatility for both studio and stage.

"Shuriken guitars can do things no other guitars on the planet can do," said MacKay. "Variax Shuriken is our first artist-designed instrument, and we were excited to work closely with Stevic to create a truly unique, innovative and modern guitar," said Marcus Ryle, President, Line 6. "For heavier or more technical styles of music, Variax Shuriken offers clear and tight tone, as well as unrivaled versatility for any performance scenario."

Featuring a 27" baritone scale length, Variax Shuriken delivers optimized playability for guitarists who perform with heavier strings and lower tunings. The extended scale length provides punchier, more-precise tones and works in conjunction with Variax alternative tunings to let guitarists play in any tuning they wish, no matter the tension and feel of the strings.

This allows players to go far beyond the range of any standard 6-, 7- or even 8-string guitar. Like all guitars in the Variax family, Variax Shuriken gives guitarists instant access to a wide range of guitar models and alternate tunings via Variax HD modeling technology. Instrument models and alternate tunings can be accessed with a simple twist of a knob.

Variax Shuriken can be incorporated into any guitar rig but is fully optimized for use with Line 6 modelers and multi-effects, including the Helix, POD HD and Firehawk families. Variax Shuriken is initially available in a limited production run.

Variax Shuriken will be available early spring.

NAMM 2017: Line 6's Helix Native puts its top-end amp and effect modelling in a plugin
By Ben Rogerson (Computer Music, Total Guitar) an hour ago Guitars

You can transfer tones from the software to the hardware

The power of Helix in your DAW.
NAMM 2017: We lavished praise on Line 6's Helix amp and effect modelling pedalboard last year, so our hopes are high for Helix Native, a native plugin version. This is based on the same technology, so it's actually possible to transfer tones from the software to the hardware.

Helix Native promises to emulate the sound and feel of vintage tube amps, cabs, mics and effects, and is powered by Line 6's HX modelling engine. The company says: "Patches created in the Helix Native plugin are compatible with physical Helix hardware, so guitarists can effortlessly take their Helix tones from studio to stage and back again."

The clean-looking UI has been designed with a fast tone editing workflow in mind, and works seamlessly with the Helix hardware editor. Third-party impulse responses are also supported.

"Our 20-year legacy of modelling expertise has led us to create the highest level of realism ever available in a guitar plug-in," said Marcus Ryle, President, Line 6. "Guitarists worldwide use Helix to create inspiring guitar tones and push the bounds of their creativity. With Helix Native, guitarists and engineers can bring the same powerful tone creation workflow to their DAW of choice."

Helix Native will be released in the spring priced at $399, though there'll be special pricing for Helix, Helix Rack and POD Farm owners, and a 15-day demo version will be available, too. It'll be offered in VST/AU/AAX formats for PC and Mac.

PEDAL SIZED POWER AMP - 200 watts $149

http://www.quilterlabs.com/sellsheets/MicroBlock45SELLSHEET.pdf

Quilter's in-depth knowledge of tone and overdrive is now available in a compact pedal format with 33/45 watts of speaker power. Perfect for the player who doesn't need the mighty Tone Block's 200-watt output. Go ahead, plug in, turn it up & watch the jaws drop as a big helping of high energy Quilter mojo pours out of this little box! Clean or dirty, this efficient little workhorse keeps on rocking.

INTUITIVE CONTROLS

Gain, Tri-Q, Master. The same three wide-range controls that made the Tone Block 200 famous are now available in pedal form. Gain goes from clean to soaring overdrive. Tri-Q goes from Blackface chime to roaring lead boost. And Master takes you from full output down to zero with no change in tone or overdrive. Perfect for practice or playing out.

AMAZING FLEXIBILITY

As a complete miniature guitar amp, the MicroBlock 45 can fill a bedroom, living room, or even a small club as a backup amp. In addition, the MicroBlock makes a great utility amp for driving headphones, and a great general purpose playback amp using either the guitar or mini-jack input. It can even be used as a natural distortion pedal by using the headphone jack as a line output. It's the easiest way to see what the "Quilter thing" is all about.

FEATURES

-Comes with universal voltage 72-watt power supply
-Quarter-inch high impedance input for maximum pickup response
-Quarter inch speaker output drives 16, 8 and 4 ohm loads, and is fully protected

http://www.quilterlabs.com/sellsheets/FRONTLINER.pdf

Introducing the most advanced guitar amplification system available for the guitarist of today. The Frontliner 2x8W allows you to mount any Quilter "Block" style amplifier in the rear mounted docking bay, turning it into a powerful grab and go 200 watt combo. Pick it up with one hand, walk onstage and easily outperform cumbersome 4x12 rigs!

Traditional bulky guitar combos have narrow dispersion patterns and cranking them up leaves the audience in pain and the sound man angry. Tilt back legs or stands help but kill bass response and don't eliminate comb filtering from unwanted reflections.

The Frontliner 2x8W's 20 degree speaker angle and ultra wide dispersion aim your tone where you need it instead of blasting the front row. The closed back cuts down on unwanted reflections making your sound more controlled and focused.

Not your average guitar cabinet, the Frontliner 2x8W is constructed from durable plywood that is mysteriously lighter than anything you can find at your local hardware store. No expense was spared in crafting the ultimate professional solution.

   - CNC milled footcups to precisely locate amplifier in docking bay
- Quick release thumbscrews let you detach your head for fly dates
- Brushed, black anodized, aluminum plate securely retains amplifier
- High grade, ultra-light plywood for minimum weight
- Dual 8" concert grade drivers
- Heavy duty input jack and speaker wiring with strain relief terminations
- Chrome plated, rubber cushioned steel reinforced handle
- 130° dispersion with 20° speaker tilt delivers wide, clear coverage
- T-5052 aircraft grade anodized aluminum alloy grill

Digiface USB - The Optical Box

This compact, portable and lightweight audio interface (only 220 g /0.49 lbs) transfers digital audio data in SPDIF and ADAT format to Windows and Mac computers.

The latest Plug and Play technology guarantees a simple installation, even for the inexperienced user. Numerous unique features as well as RME's robust drivers enable a quick, efficient and comfortable operation of the Digiface USB.

Features

The Digiface USB is an extremely compact & portable digital audio interface with 4 optical ADAT / SPDIF I/Os, and an analog high-quality line/phones output via 6.3 mm TRS jack. Continuing the legacy of RME's famous HDSP Digiface, a triple ADAT I/O interface with phones and PCI interface, Digiface USB simplifies connection with USB 2, does not need an external power supply, and even adds another optical I/O, resulting in 32 channels input and output each when using ADAT optical.

The analog output hosts channels 33/34, and can be used freely thanks to TotalMix FX, RME's routing and monitoring solution that knows nearly no limits in routing and mixing (the Digiface USB does not include FX).

Each single optical port can use either ADAT (up to 8 channels) or SPDIF (stereo). While the inputs adapt automatically to the received signal format, the outputs can be individually switched between ADAT and SPDIF operation. Supported are SMUX and SMUX4. Therefore at 192 kHz either 8 channels via 4 x SPDIF or ADAT are possible on both inputs and outputs.

Its small size, weight and bus-powered operation make the Digiface USB extremely versatile and useful. It could even serve as simple headphone amp for mobile use.

Top
TotalMix

Like all the latest RME interfaces, the Digiface USB also includes the powerful digital real-time mixer TotalMix FX. It allows for practically unlimited mixing and routing operations, with all inputs and playback channels simultaneously, to any hardware outputs. The Digiface USB does not have a DSP, so there are no FX available. Still it includes a dedicated Control Room section with Talkback, Main/Phones, fader groups, mute groups, complete remote controllability via Mackie or OSC protocol, and much more.

Here are some typical applications for TotalMix:

Setting up delay-free submixes (headphone mixes). The Digiface USB allows for up to 17 fully independent stereo submixes. On an analog mixing desk, this would equal 34 Aux sends.

Unlimited routing of inputs and outputs (free utilisation, patchbay functionality).

Distributing signals to several outputs at a time. TotalMix offers state-of-the-art splitter and distributor functions.

Simultaneous playback of different programs via a single stereo output. The ASIO multiclient driver supports the usage of several programs at the same time. When done on different playback channels TotalMix provides the means to mix and monitor these on a single stereo output.

Mixing of the input signal to the playback signal (complete ASIO Direct Monitoring). RME not only is the pioneer of ADM, but also offers the most complete implementation of the ADM functions.

Integration of external devices. Use TotalMix to insert external effects devices, be it in the playback or in the record path. Depending on the current application, the functionality equals insert or effects send and effects return, for example as used during real-time monitoring when adding some reverb to the vocals.

Every single input channel, playback channel and hardware output features a Peak and RMS level meter, calculated in hardware. These level displays are very useful to determine the presence and routing destinations of the audio signals.
