QuoteOnly one observation, the 3.5mm barrel plug was too small. I ended up using a 1.7mm I.D., 4.7mm O.D. for the Plugable unit.

Yes - if you use a different USB hub  - you must use a power adapter cable suitable for that type USB hub.

You've mentioned focus rite a bit. I wondered what you thought of this item on it's way out:
http://us.focusrite.com/ipad-audio-interfaces/itrack-dock#overview

I see it has a usb. Would I be able to plug into that with the fish man triple play and not need any other items?

My goal is to use FTP and jam-up on my iPad and that's it.

If not, what are the minimums I can go with please?

Thanks a lot. :-)

Minimum iPad setup would be use the FTP with Apple USB Camera Connection Adapter, then a TRRS Guitar Input Adapter - but i do not recommend it - (too much noise because of the Apple Microphone Preamp in iPad.)

Instead, use a Powered USB Hub that supports the FTP + a separate 24 bit A/D USB Class Compliant Guitar interface - like iRig Pro, or Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 - since this includes 5pin MIDI I/O  - useful for using a MIDI Foot controller or driving a Hardware synth.

Thanks Elantric, your a wealth of info my friend.

So if I used the  FTP with Apple USB Camera Connection Adapter, and the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 do I connect the ftp dongle into the usb of the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and simply 1/4" from guitar into the focusrite input and I'm set?

Also could I midi from a keyboard (should I want to do keys also) into the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and best set midi into ipad apps as well?

Looking for the smallest, cleanest little setup.

I currently have a Line 6 sonic port but using the Focusrite makes that obsolete it appears unless I go out and don't plan to use the ftp.

Thanks again in advance.

There is only one Powered USB Hub required.

Re read the 1st post. = follow each of the 8 steps in the specific order, and use the same specified cables detailed at each step.

Not to single anyone out, but I'm amazed that many folks have not figured out that a working USB data connection requires at least One Device be the master and have a USB Host port

Further reading on USB for those interested.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB
Yes - Only ONE connected device may be USB HOST. You cannot connect "USB Host to another USB host" or directly connect one USB Client/Endpoint Peripheral to another USB Client/Endpoint Peripheral. There must always be ONE (and Only ONE)  USB Host in the USB connection.

Its rather like a asking "can i plug a square peg into a round hole?

QuoteAlso could I midi from a keyboard (should I want to do keys also) into the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and set midi into ipad apps as well?

Yes!
Also you can plug any USB Class compliant MIDI device - (including USB Keyboards) into the USB Hub

In the next 3 months - many new iPad interfaces are arriving on the scene - so determining the "the smallest, cleanest little setup. " its a volatile moving target that is changing weekly.

If you follow all 10 steps the 1st post in this thread, you may make the following substitutions

Step 1 - Use an Alternate 24 bit Audio Interface, many have lower DC Current demands than the Scarlet 2i4, thus negating the need for the special "y" power USB Cable in step#2.

My smallest iPad FTP+ 24 bit Audio rig is described below - lets work backwards - starting at the iPad.

1) Use an iPad (newer than 1st gen)

2) Use the specific Apple USB Camera adapter (30pin or Lightning) appropriate for your iPads dock connector type.

3) Use a small USB 2.0 Powered Hub - like the Pluggable - and its included 2.5Amp Power supply.

connect the output of the USB Hub into the Apple USB Camera Adapter.

**   For mobile operation substitute a separate USB Battery pack to power the USB Hub.

*  RAVPower Element 10400mAh External Battery Pack Charger Power Bank (Dual USB Outputs,
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009V5X1CE/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

4) Connect the FTP Receiver into the USB Hub.  - You should then power up your guitar mounted FTP Controller and see the red "link" LED on the FTP Receiver light up, and then launch an IOS MIDI Monitor app and see MIDI Not On / off messages being input into the iPad from the FTP. Most IOS Synths will instantly recognize the FTP as the MIDI Input device, and respond to your playing.

5) Connect  any USB Audio Class compliant device - there are many too numerous to mention, most are listed here:
http://auriaapp.com/Support/auria-audio-interfaces
Some are large  - some are small, some have only 16 bit resolution  - which presents a problem with Positive Grid Bias, as you are really clobbered and not able to appreciate the joy of Bias until you try it with a 24 bit Audio Interface with a clean instrument preamp - so that narrows the field.
For small, I use the iRig Pro
http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigpro/

DO not confuse this iRig Pro interface (above) with the garbage older "iRig"(below) - they are chalk and cheese.

Its too bad Line 6 dropped the ball on the Sonicport - the early prototypes I saw featured 3 connection cables 30 pin , Lighting, and USB.

Line 6 dropped the USB cable from the final production version.

I've now spent a considerable amount of time setting up my Triplplay with the iPad Air. Although it seems to work, i'm nowhere near attempting to gig with this set up. I'm still stuck on which synth app is best (presently using Sampletank free) and how to incorporate JamPro/Bias for seamless use of both synth and guitar.
My current setup is as follows:

Tripleplay -> Plugable 4-port USB hub -> Scarlett 2i4 -> Traynor K4. I'm also using the Ground Control Pro pedal.

Elantric, I know you have had success with a similar setup - any gigging guidance and app suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

NZPaul

This is really interesting. There's one thing I don't understand though - can't you just plug the "Y" cable into the battery pack rather than having to use a hub or is the power not regulated enough to power the Scarlett?

Find a large Battery pack to power the Plugagle USB Hub, and Audio noise floor will become much lower, with higher dynamic range

The powered  USB Hub is required to address a phenomena known as "power on inrush current " to the USB circuitry in many USB Audio interfaces.

This USB  power on inrush current is the specific reason most iPad users see "This devices uses too much power" error message on the iPad - even when using AC Powered external USB Audio /MIDI Interfaces!

Just an update - seeking the ultimate tools that work well as Ipad Audio interfaces

Read my 1st post in this thread - but know you can have a powerful music making rig if you skip the Scarlet 2i4  and substitute a gently used 2005 era Novation X-Station.

Its an often overlooked fact - but these older X-Stations employ Focusrite designed Mic Pres (Focusrite owns Novation) and offer 24 bit USB Class Compliant audio I/O to iPad  - with similar performance to Scarlett 2i4
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novation_Digital_Music_Systems

Frankly its shocking for me to read all the excuses, wrong information,  and struggles that today's Music gear manufacturers are having in 2014 to produce a product which is 24 bit USB Streaming Audio and USB Class Compliant and full MIDI I/O over USB  - when Novation  / Focusrite /  Harman Digitech / Lexicon were doing this 10 years ago

X-StationOwners Manual
http://d19ulaff0trnck.cloudfront.net/sites/default/files/downloads/4178/english89.pdf

I found my latest X-Station-25 for $150 on Ebay    - and it features:

* A Mono / polyphonic synth (Keyboard has excellent Pro feel and Aftertouch!) (no computer required) with thick analog sound heard on many UK pop records
* A MIDI controller with lots of knobs and sliders all mapable as MIDI CC# controls with nice LCD display for real time status for playing iPad Synths using Ipad+CCK) or tweaking settings in other gear - like N.I. Guitar Rig ( with Mac via USB) or VG-99 / GR-55 using old school 5 pin DIN MIDI I/O. There's a trackpad and highly configurable joystick
* A 2 in  / 2 out 24 bit Audio Interface with XLR / TRS Combo  inputs and Balanced TRS outputs for PC/Mac/Ipad(+CCK)
* A USB to 5 pin DIN MIDI I/O interface for PC/Mac/Ipad(+CCK)

* Built in Real time FX( Delays, Reverb, Chorus, Compression, EQ)  for the Synth or any live signal fed into its  XLR / TRS Combo  inputs.

These used to retail for $750 here in USA back in 2005

The S.O.S review is from 2004  - and ignore the warnings about USB drivers  - the very latest DOCS , Editor USB Driver for Win / Mac are available via links below

Just to add an update.

I recently ordered a USB Power Indicator - to measure see the current draw of  the connected USB Peripheral Audio / MIDI Interface

This helps identify  / qualify which Audio / MIDI Interface devices can be directly connected to the Ipad  - without the need for a powered USB Hub!
The ebay seller assures me this works with iPad and passes all USB data to the connected USB peripheral device.

Specifications:

Measuring voltage range: 3V-10V(accuracy: 1% )
Measuring current range: 0-3.3A(accuracy: 0.4% )
Display Panel: OLED(Display color: white)
Size: 60mm * 18mm
Display data: Voltage, Current, Power, Capacity

I ordered here - because the seller was in USA and I avoid the 2-3 week shipping delay from China

Do you happen to have a link to where I can order the correct type of USB cable?

Here in Guam it is hard to just by stuff like that.

I also just ordered an iRig Pro. They are on sale at Musicians Friend for $124.99 and includes a $199.00 set of headphones. That offer is only good till the end of Aug 2014.

Can I use iRig Pro with a hub on my Ipad Air, so I can also add a midi foot controller ?

Thanks

Hi Elantric,
Thank you so much for all of this great information!
I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and my old MacBook which I used to record on just gave up the ghost.  I'm thinking of buying an iPad to replace it, and I was so glad to come across your article seeing that you can record with a Scarlett 2i4 on iPad.
Are all generations of iPad compatible with the Scarlett 2i4?  I had to update from Mac OS 10.5 to Mavericks due to compatibility issues with the interface.  I'd hate to buy a new iPad just to find out that it isn't compatible with the Scarlett 2i4.
My other question is whether the quality of the recording is just as good when recorded onto an iPad as it is when recorded onto a computer.
Thanks again for the great article!

Elantric

QuoteAre all generations of iPad compatible with the Scarlett 2i4?

I'm using an iPad Air and  iPad 2nd generation

Avoid all 1st generation 2010 era iPads., and many report iPad 3 runs hot.

Must be running IOS 6 or newer

Of course the latest generation iPad will run faster and yield better performance, and much longer battery life.  - (faster screen redraws, and less time spent watching  spinning  beach balls waiting for an operation to complete )
QuoteMy other question is whether the quality of the recording is just as good when recorded onto an iPad as it is when recorded onto a computer.

Need to use a Pro app that supports 24 bit recording.

So has anyone tried this with ios 8.1.1?  I found this great thread, and had seen mention of this on other forums (without all the neat details provided here) and tried it with my iPad 4. It didn't work because in my rush I assumed it was running ios 7....wrong, it was ios 6. So I immediately upgraded to 8.1.1, then attempted this setup again. No joy. The iPad displays a message "Cannot Use Device - Scarlett 2i4 USB: the connected device is not supported".  Now that's infuriating - the Apple device identified -and- rejected the 2i4!!!  I tried making all of the connections in varying sequences, but always got the same message. I even left the hub unpowered a couple of times, and the ipad promptly displayed "device uses too much power" instead. I logged into the Apple support forum, tried to ask a question, and they flipped me to a page where they wanted $29 bucks for the privilege of telling Apple that their new ios version behaves inconsistently with the previous version. So has Apple killed all of us USB users?

Elantric

QuoteSo has anyone tried this with ios 8.1.1?

No - I refuse to update my ipad Air to IOS8  - I'm still on IOS 7.1.2 - which in 2014 is still the best IOS version for Music creation on iPad IMHO
Why move one step forward, and 12 steps backwards ;)

2 weeks ago a friend wanted me to debug his Auria DAW iPad setup that "used to work" with his Apogee Mic - then we tracked it down that he had updated his iPad 3 to IOS 8
(read details here:)
http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/5993/ios8-and-usb-class-compliant-midi-interfaces/p1

Edit March 2015)  Now running IOS 8.1.3 on iPad Air, iPhone 6 Plus and all works well! - only thing that does not work on  IOS 8. is my Fender G-DEC 3 Thirty USB Audio

Basically the method I describe is a known method for USB Class Compliant Audio / MIDI Interfaces to work around the tight Apple mFI audio spec and added restrictions for the Scarlet series in IOS 8
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MFi_Program

http://www.wavemachinelabs.com/Support/auria-audio-interfaces

Remember its Crucial to connect and power on eveything in the same specific order and sequence every time - as I explain in the 1st post n this thread

If you connect and/or power up things out of sequence   - it will never work.

iOS8 and USB class compliant MIDI interfaces

http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/5993/ios8-and-usb-class-compliant-midi-interfaces/p1

After updating my iPad Air to iOS8, my class compliant USB/MIDI cable (CME U2MIDI) is no longer detected by any MIDI app. On my MacBook Pro, the cable is still working -- so I assume, the interface is NOT defective. Strange: If I connect my class compliant Korg Microkey Keyboard via CCK (original from Apple) to my iPad everythings works as before. Any ideas or experiences with USB/MIDI interfaces under iOS8? Any hints which USB/MIDI cable is working fine with iOS8?

I just took delivery of a Roland UA -22 Duo Capture EX
http://www.rolandus.com/products/details/1248/498

QuoteFOR IPAD

Turn your iPad into a professional recording device by connecting it to the DUO-CAPTURE EX*. Record vocals, guitar, keyboard, or other instruments with superb quality through the DUO-CAPTURE EX into the iPad using your favorite iOS apps. Additionally, the DUO-CAPTURE EX can function as a USB-MIDI interface to control iOS apps with electronic instruments such as MIDI keyboards, V-Drums, etc.

*Connect the DUO-CAPTURE EX to your iPad via Apple's iPad Camera Connection Kit. Batteries or AC power is required when using the DUO-CAPTURE EX with an iPad. You cannot charge your iPad using the DUO-CAPTURE EX.

Compared to Scarlett 2i4  - the UA-22 is much simpler to interface with iPhone/iPad - just install three AA batteries, move the rear Clock Source Select switch to "Tab" (Tablet), and press the rear Power Push Switch and connect to iPhone/iPad using the Apple USB Camera Adapter (CCK) - no need for a powered USB hub.

Iphone/iPhone IOS apps recognize the UA-22 as a 24 bit @ 44.1kHz Stereo Audio / MIDI I/O  Interface!

its Battery Powered, 24 bit Stereo I/O, decent +48V Phantom Mic Pres, Decent Hi-Z Instrument Input. Stereo / mono Direct monitor switch, full 5 pin MIDI I/O interface,   and TRS balanced audio outputs.

Still sorting out how to use UA-22 along with FTP USB Receiver with  a USB Hub and one iPad Air

But so far this UA-22 meets my goals for "best IOS Mobile Live performance Audio/MIDI Interface for Yonac ToneStack, BIAS / JamupPro. Just add a MIDI foot pedal for control
-

Back to your questions - of course this is an iRig Pro replacement. IOS only supports one external Audio Interface - thus why I'm exploring all options.

I always recommend insert a passive DI with Ground Lift before feeding a PA

The TRS Balanced Out on either Scarlett 2i4 or UA-22 supports TS 1/4" connections into Guitar amps and "1/8 to TRS 1/4 adapter so it can plug into MP3 input on many amps "

Is the DI box needed when the PA only has XLR jacks?  Or is it required even if the PA has 1/4" jacks as well?

Elantric

Its more about breaking any potential ground loops and minimizing hum / noise / reducing potential shock hazards

While many keyboard players  use an iPad/iPhone as a Tone module for an external MIDI keyboard with plastic keys , and easily feed Headphone out from iPad into the PA with no Hum or noise, as a Guitarist  - i have a very different situation.

Playing steel stringed Electric guitar with single coil pickups into an IOS compatible Audio /MIDI interface box to use Yonac ToneStack /or  Positive Grid's BIAS / Jamup Pro XT  for real time Guitar Amp Sim/FX processing and with a separate third party MIDI footcontroller all running into the same common IOS Audio /MIDI interface box - i have greater potential for hum and noise. The DI box solved that!

Lately I use this one as I like its 1/4" "pass through" jacks for feeding a stage monitor amp, while XLR outs feed PA

An update -

Been further testing the Roland UA-22 Duo Capture EX 24 bit Audio  / MIDI interface and have it 100% working at the same time with with Fishman Tripleplay USB Receiver on my iPhone 6 Plus running IOS 8.1.2.

Step #1) USB Battery pack to power the USB Hub.
* RAVPower Element 10400mAh External Battery Pack Charger Power Bank (Dual USB Outputs:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009V5X1CE/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Step#2) DC Coax plug to USB adapter cable from 2.1Amp Out on Battery pack above into the Power input on the USB Hub in Step# 3)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-2-0-Male-to-3-5mm-Barrel-Connector-Jack-5V-DC-Power-Cable-15-inch-Black-US-/360658147811

Step #3) Powered USB Hub
* USB 2.0 Powered Hub  - I'm having good results with this one:
http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-7-Port-USB-Switch-Black/dp/B007S642BW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1389602351&sr=8-2&keywords=usb+hub+switches
eForCity 7-Port USB Hub with ON / OFF Switches

Step #4  Genuine Apple CCK ( Camera Connection Kit / USB Camera Adapter):
Connect the USB data output of the USB HUB in Step#3 into this Apple CCK adapter
For latest iPads (or Iphone/iPod Touch 5 running IOS7/8) - Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter

Step #4 Plug the Fishman USB Receiver into one of the USB inputs on the USB Hub in Step #3
( Important: Be sure you have already performed the Tripleplay Wireless Link Procedure and updated the FTP firmware to latest version using a separate Win/Mac running FTP Control panel at least once before attempting to use FTP with iPad)

You should see a flashing Red LED, that turns into a steady Red glow AFTER the Guitar mounted FTP Transmitter in turned on.

Step #5 Be sure the Roland UA-22 Duo Capture EX  is setup in "Tab" mode, with fresh charged AA batteries,  Plug the UA-22's  USB Output into  one of the USB inputs on the USB Hub in Step #3.
You will observe the front Power LED on the Right front of the UA-22 turn from Green to Red  - this indicates a good USB data connection has been established.

On Roland UA-22 Duo Capture EX, set the rear switch to "Hi-Z Instrument", Phantom Power = Off, Direct Monitor = Off.

and  plug a Guitar into Channel #1 input.
The UA-22 has TRS Balanced Outputs and TRS Stereo Headphone out. I used the Headphone out into the Line Input on IK Multimedia  iLoud stereo powered speaker and a pair of Alesis Alpha 112A Powered Speakers

I launched Ik Sampltank IOS and selected a Hammond B3 patch,  enable under settings I enable " BG = Background Audio, and the see that the FTP Controller Synth volume knob works to control the volume of the selected Sampletank Instrument. Also the three way switch on FTP Controller must be in either the "Synth" or " Mix" position to hear the triggered Sampletank IOS  sounds - it will Mute the Sampletank instrument if this switch is placed in the "Guitar" position.

Next I launch Yonac Tonestack, and observe I have 24bit Audio I/O with same headroom  / performance as the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4  - the benefit of using the Roland UA-22 Duo Capture EX is the fewer hassles for powering, and its internal AA rechargable batteries will run 6 hours if using Sanyo Eneloop XX 2500mA NiMH batteries

Thank You !
Just what I needed to know.
I have all of the parts already ! (Except for those batteries that I will order now)

I already tried just using the UA-22 into the CCK on my iPad Air and it worked great !
I was worried cause I had made the mistake of updating to IOS 8.1.1 But at least it works so far.

Little worried about hooking it up to the hub. Will let you know how IOS 8.1.1 handled it.

Be kind of nice to have a thread for what works for us dumb IOS updaters !

I got a new micro USB cable - and now I can successfully use the the Line6 Sonic Port VX as a USB Class Compliant Audio Interface "- which means I can swap out the UA-22 Duo Capture EX and use the Line6 Sonic Port VX with a a powered USB Hub for Mobile Fishman Tripleplay on IOS rig.

But I love the UA-22 - as this provides true 5 pin MIDI I/O, a good self powered IOS interface that needs no Hub to get through the gig should something fail, and is easier to "restart" would power glitch occur mid set.

The Scarlett 2i4 has a bit higher audio performance - but you must follow a specific  order for powering up the  Powered USB Hub First,  and then connect the IOS device
