I thought this was an interesting nugget :

'One of the Axe-Fx's DSPs is more powerful than both DSPs combined in the Helix. Our tests show that the TigerSHARC DSP used in the Axe-Fx is over twice as fast as the DSP used in the Helix clock-for-clock . Now add that our DSP is clocked 50% higher the net power is about three times greater. So a single TigerSHARC is about 50% faster than both DSPs combined on the Helix'

Also the TigerShark DSP used in AXE-FX II cost $360 each  - there are two

Beautiful stuff.  I can only think of only two other pieces of gear that produce pitch transposing that clear:  VG-99 and Eventide H8000 (and probably their new God-box).

Well guys, the verdict is in... I've decided to return my Axe-Fx for a refund. I'd like to say that the VG-99 wins but quite honestly, the GT-Pro wins. I've really been digging it lately. Perhaps its because my GK guitar is in the shop but anyway... I found the Axe FX interface extremely cumbersome. Also, I may be wrong but there doesn't seem to be a global gain control. That is to say that each preset's volume varies wildly and this is very problematic for setting levels for recording and performing. Another issue is the fan noise which is simply unacceptable considering the lengths to which I've gone to make my studio silent; however, ultimately, the determining factor is tone. The Boss/Roland products just sound better to me. I have truly been amazed at how distinct each preset I create sounds compared to the previous one I created. To me, the Axe-Fx has a niche market appeal if you want to dial in very non-traditional sounds but I really don't create many multi-tap, alternate scale presets. It is my belief that in perhaps 5 years that the Axe-Fx will be a monster but right now, I think it is best to stick with what works and might I add works well. Go Roland/Boss!!

later,
Chipstar

i am surprised i was a boss/roland believer for years but since i got my axefx 2xl+ i would never go back.  that is the best investment in my music equipment i have ever made.  not sure what your hearing for a fan noise, mine seems to be totally quiet.
anyway each to their own.

I know there's a thread for FW updates but I felt this was worth breaking out into its own thread. The Axe FX 3's "Ares" modeling has been partially ported back to the II, starting a new firmware series. The release notes are not especially detailed:
Ares 1.00
This firmware is a partial port of the "Ares" modeling used in the Axe-Fx III. Not all aspects of the Ares modeling were able to be ported but the most important parts were and the amp modeling should sound very similar.

Given that I've seen a good amount of angst about whether or not the (nearly 8 year old) Axe Fx II is still going to be a viable platform going forward, I think this is a welcome surprise. I'll be looking forward to testing Ares on the AX8 in the near future.

I guess I missed this and started a separate thread.  My friend who has an Axe2 just found out and updated his unit.  He found out that he pretty much will need to reprogram every patch he created on the unit as the sounds changed with this update.

Still, to be see a company still supporting a unit eight years after its release.

Does anybody know how to get the Apple Audio/MIDI driver to run from an iPad? The driver on the FAS site is not an FAS built thing - they said it's an Apple created driver.  I've always wanted to use the II with an iPad (for audio tricks) over USB but it's not class compliant.

There is no "Fractal USB Audio Driver" for iPad/iPhone- all Apple IOS devices rely on the external USB accessory to be either mFI (with an Apple Authentification IC) or USB Class Compliant

connecting MIDI over USB  was easy

but using AXE-FX II as a USB Audio device to record with iPad  - I had to 1st connect to my Laptop - set the AXE-FX II to USB Class Compliant Audio Mode using AXE-FXII USB Audio Driver(on Windows PC)  , then leave the AXE-FX II powered up, and then connect via USB to an iPad+Apple USB Camera Adapter

was the last time I tried it 3 years ago

It is not at boot time.

Yes, I'm familiar with that approach to get things going. I'm really wondering if there's anyway to DIY fix it for iPad.

It's worth noting that MIDI (thru) over USB doesn't work even when you plug into a MacBook first then connect to an iOS device. There is a known issue with it that Fractal doesn't want to to deal with. MIDI (thru) over USB only works with Windows devices and in one programs on MacOS (Logic Pro X). I use an additional MIDI interface with the Axe to get the MIDI passed through from my connected foot controller to whatever device (laptop/iPad) is connected at the end of the chain.

Turns out you can also do this with an OTG dongle + Android device that can run FracPad. A fairly compact easy fix that doesn't require a laptop.

Some new firmware for the II apparently. I don't know what but cool that they released something new for a discontinued product.
