Hello everyone,

I posted recently, probably in the wrong place, a question regarding using a compressor and another effect when the Mod and MFX were both already being used in a certain preset.  If this cannot happen, and the GR55 is limited in this way (no send and return) can the midi in and out be used as a send and return type of feature?  I see two relevant questions here: are there midi based or operated compressors, flangers, delays, chorus etc. maybe some sort of software?  And, can midi be inserted in the signal chain?  This might seem silly to many, for several reasons if I'm way off base here, lol, but am trying anything I can to fix this limitation.  Thanks everyone

Hi Guys,

I would like to create a patch on the GR 55 with both a Overdrive Distortion, Phaser "and" a Compressor.  Is that even possible?  Looks like I can only choose two of the three here?  If the following helps.....Right now, this is what I have "MOD  :01  OD/DS"  and  "MFX  :03  Phaser"   I would like to include a compressor in the chain now...possible?

Not that I'm aware of - the GR-55 is a bit of a jack of all trades, and master of none  - and presents severe limitations for many folks

Guitars with Roland 24 pin or GK 13 pin output transmit 6 separate analog audio streams, one per string.

The GR-55 does many things, but it has a finite number of effects, and limited FX routing capabilities  -

There are MIDI controlled FX - but it sounds like you should consider a gently used VG-99 which provides greatly expanded FX routing - but no PCM Synths

1) MIDI doesn't carry any audio
2) You could control an outboard multi effect that has the capability you mentioned.
3) The main downside is that the effect would be post GR-55, meaning that you would plug the out of the GR-55 into the  Input of that outboard effect. This means any amp or cabinet simulations we have already been applied in the effect would be working on that signal not in the normal signal chain. This can work quite well depending upon what effects you are using. However it does have limitations.
4)  The GR - 55 would then control the program selection through MIDI on the outboard effect. When you change a patch on the GR55 it will send a MIDI command to change the patch on the outboard effect selecting whatever would be appropriate for the particular GR55 patch you selected.

Thanks guys.  I appreciate the time it took you to respond to this Elantric and mmmmgtr.  I think over the holiday break I will embark on Gumtown's GR55 floorboard editor download.  That will give me some time to mess around with something fun.  I think I tried it before, and knowing me, I probably did something incorrectly.  I still have the read me file for version 20150417: 17 April 2015 sitting here next to my desk.  I love the GR55 and the fact that I can have the best of both worlds... just wish I could multichain many more fx in the signal chain.   Hope Roland changes that someday.  Thanks again guys and I'm not back before the end of the year, Happy Holidays!

At the risk of stating the obvious and not really solving the problem: pan synths left and guitars right, run L and R outs to mixer/ interface, use hardware fx & real amp, or fx/ amp sims in DAW.
electric: Epiphone Dot semihollow body, acoustic: mahogany jumbo, recording: Cubase Artist 11 or Tascam DP008

Another option:
normal guitar > pedal board > GK-3 guitar input.

For my setup, I modified my GR-55 with a Send/Return inside in the GR-55, where the normal guitar signal comes in from the GK 13 pin input socket.
I drilled holes in my GR-5 case for 2 1/4" jacks, but the warranty expired years ago.

Hi Gumtown,

Have you got a video or pictures of how to put the extra input into GR55. Thanks for all your hard work.

There is a topic here with pictures from a few who have done the Send/Return loop mod in the Normal pickup line.
