Title: GP-10 - Nylon Real Acoustic Collection
Post by: Autana on March 24, 2016, 06:14:06 AM

Inspired by the valuable contributions of other users, whom I mentioned at end of the demo video, this my first Patch Exchange post, and I chose the guitar nylon subject and Boss GP-10, looking for achieve more realistic acoustic sounds for classic, flamenco, Latin rock, pop, smooth jazz, Brazilian and other related styles.

Except some nice nylon presets here in VGF, very few patches I've tried, while can sound fine in other style scenarios, IMHO not success ed showcasing the sweet essence, rich tone and vibe of an authentic Spanish or South American types of acoustic classical nylon guitar.

In my country, Venezuela, musicians grown an entire life surrounded by acoustic instruments such as guitar, cuatro venezolano (ukulele cousin) tiple, mandolin, harp llanera "arpa llanera" etc. and its sound is like the air we breathe. So taking advantage of that I dared to create this patches collection (I named NyRaC - The Nylon Real Acoustic Collection), hoping  the results are at least half as good as expected.

Included audio and video demos reference. Thanks for listen and watch. Your opinions and criticisms could open a thread for technical and stylistic discussion.

NyRaC consists of a LiveSet (BOSS TONE STUDIO) of 20+ patches for the Boss GP-10,  focused on acoustic and electro-acoustic
guitar, looking to achieve realistic COSM nylon guitar tones for classic, flamenco, Latin rock pop, smooth jazz, Brazilian and similar styles.
While NyRAC is not intended to replace a finely built nylon instrument  (I think isn't probable for now at least) I believe the  results are acceptable to ensure an enjoyable  VG experience .
NyRaC is mostly based on extreme subtractive EQ/tone techniques and interaction, sometimes hard to control, between those GP-10 edit modules  and its parameters.

NOTE: many presets of this collection, use CTL1/2 EXPsw/ON and up to 6 simultaneous assign for special and important enhancements and functions,  please explore each preset carefully. I will try in my spare time for a description of each control, however in the video demo there are some examples.

The secret to get the real nylon tone, from the COSM nylon model lies in the simultaneous/linked use of the two equalizers available in GP-10, along with the interaction with AMP tone controls  and COSM AMP parameters such as Body, Tone and Attack. Unfortunately the second EQ is activated in FX, so the other effects of this module are not available, but apart from some occasional compression, who needs a Metal Zone, Rotary or UNI-V on a Ramirez Spanish guitar ;~))

THANKS VGF!  this is devoted to you!

Please, if you download the library I would love to know your opinion or comment, even your music and recordings using  NyRAC. Is very important to me as a developer to know their strengths and flaws, and working on possible improvements and releases.

****------ Although NyRAC library was created with the aim of sharing in vguitarforum, if you find it useful and enjoyable Paypal donations are highly welcome.  Thanks ------****

is there a way to get the parimeter settings so this can be ported over to the VG-99?

OK I downloaded the editor. Can you tell me which patch youre using in the demo video? Ill start with that one.

BTW these are fantastic and they transfer very well to the VG-99. Thankyou.

Great Autana,
I played a few of the patches to my band mates (have to mention they couldn't understand how the sounds created by a guy on the other side of the World could enter my pedal, but that's more of a educational thing) but anyhow, we all loved the sounds :D

Thanks!

I did DL the editor and cloned one into the 99. Had to tweak it a bit after as they play a little bassy for my taste. But theyre really good and transfer well.

You may get very close, but just a reminder  the 2014 Boss GP-10 does have improved dynamic range on all its DSP Guitar Modeling,  compared to 2007 VG-99

hey - if possible upload the resulting patches into the VG-99 Acoustic patch area

So, many congrats, many many thanks and coffee & croissant paid for you!  :D

Since you're so good at programming acoustic sounds on GP-10, what about doing the same with acoustics and 12-strings?

I can't imagine the quality of sounds you would achieve with those guitar sounds too!

BRAVO!!!

One thing that cant be duplicated in the 99 is the stereo chorus settings as there is an effect level but not a control for the direct level. Other than that, so far theyre transferring very well to the VG-99

- NyRAC PERFORMING TIPS  -

The authenticity of nylon acoustic guitar sound depends not only on the patch, also how the strings are played, the "attack" or "pulsacion" in Spanish. There is a noticeable difference between pick or Fingerstyle play. Also pick thickness, construction materials and many others factors may influence, but it could open a new devoted topic.
FWIW now, it is easy to note the nylon tone coming from commun synthetic picks tends to be artificial and "plastic sounding" and lacks of the natural brilliancy, clarity and articulation obtained by classical Fingerstyle playing, where the nail attack is combined with the fingertips flesh, which sounds  warm while exalts the best acoustic frequencies of nylon strings.

- Sometimes I use a trick for pick, which works very well especially on slow or not very fast melodic lines and some strumming. It consists in turn the pick slightly to an angle between 35 to 45 degrees with the string. I could not exactly explain the physical reason why this happen, but the sound produced this way closely resembles the Fingerstyle.

- Opposite to recommended for acoustic steel guitar, for nylon modeled tones I recommend a pick thickness of
2mm to 3mm. I personally use 3mm. Jim Dunlop Big Stubby. But that can vary for each player preferences.

IMAGES: Please check the pictures for better understanding.
AUDIO DEMOS: "Pick_no_angle.mp3"  is pick parallel with not angle with strings ,Pick_45_angle.mp3 is grabbing the pick in angle with strings, and "Fingerstyle.mp3".
In the fourth demo is another single line melodic phrase in sequence:   not angle pick attack/angle pick attack/Fingerstyle

I hope this is helpful to improve NyRAC performing experience.

Also note: Autana uses pretty thick strings.
Strings 009-046 (like I've mostly been using while getting celebral damages due too much head-banging),
does'nt give the same warmth and expression with these nylon patches, especially on the G string.
I  understand the laws of physics and I don't blame the patches, instead I should get thicker strings...  ::)

This is stunning stuff. Thank you SOOO much.

I found some of the piezo-ish attack went away when I loaded it into an impulse response plugin and loaded an IR of an acoustic guitar.Even more realistic!

Important info  I left out! sorry.  I use different brand/Gauges in my guitars:

GODIN xtSA : at first I was using 0.10.5 ~ 0.52  but since two years ago I use now  standard light  .010~.046    because I was getting tiring with the amount of strings bending in my playing.  Favorite brand: CLEARTONE Electric Nickel Plated
http://www.cleartonestrings.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/9410-Cover.jpg (http://www.cleartonestrings.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/9410-Cover.jpg)

For the PRS Bernie Marsden I use ghs BOOMERS  0.10.5  ~ 0.50 David Gilmour signature for LP

David's Stratocaster equivalent model strings are available too.

hehehe  ... I am getting neuronal damages by to have change strings to all of my guitars every week ! (well ... I did weekly some years ago, now is monthly cuz the financial "wall" ..."

While is true a higher diameter allows better dynamic expressive range, I also use thin gauges like 009 in some of my guitars, as my Ibanez RG570 and Hohner ST59 (superb strato clone) and although can feel difference with higher gauges like 0.10 0.11 and so, the really important factor to me is the string height/action.

Hohner ST59: Ernie Ball Hybrid set: 0.09 ~ 0.46
http://www.sweetwater.com/images/items/750/EB2222-large.jpg (http://www.sweetwater.com/images/items/750/EB2222-large.jpg)

Ibanez RG570:  CLEARTONE  0.09 ~ 0.46
http://www.cleartonestrings.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/9419-Cover.jpg (http://www.cleartonestrings.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/9419-Cover.jpg)

Although I use those guitars in many styles too, I only play occasional shreed styles, legato, tapping, sweeps etc. these techniques aren't  part of my everyday vocabulary, as are blues, trad. rock, jazz, acoustic, so I adjust the action of the strings a bit high without being over, and so I can keep getting the thickness and body I like for my sound while the smaller gauge makes things easier :) but for the most of my music I am into 0.10 0.10.5 0.11 y my Epiphone JoePass with 0.12 for "pure" jazz styles.

I record this sample with the Hohner ST59  with 009~046 and GK-3, high action  compensate body loss. NyRAC patch: Nylon Concert.

Action at the 1st fret         E Low string .029"    E high     .011"
Action at the 12th fret    E Low string .081"     E high       .066"

your patches are really, really, REALYY WONDERFUL!!!
So, many congrats, many many thanks and coffee & croissant paid for you!  :D
Since you're so good at programming acoustic sounds on GP-10, what about doing the same with acoustics and 12-strings?
I can't imagine the quality of sounds you would achieve with those guitar sounds too!

BRAVO!!!

Alfredo

Thanks Alfredo!  maybe I take the coffee & croissant invitation in person, I will move to Europe hopefully in a few months, Spain :)

For me acoustic GB45 model sounds a bit better than martin played on cheap chinese Gretsch copy with .12 jazz strings. On strat I preferred D28.
Personally I don't believe if there is actually any room for at least tiny improvment regarding acoustic models. It will always sound fake with apparent percusive magnetic pickup attack....But You are a true magician Autana. So keep doing your job and our vg community will keep our fingers crossed.

Can't wait to try it out tomorrow night at rehearsal.

Seriously, I understand you, my wife has been a key factor in my career, although we do not always agree, most of times I ended up deciding what she suggested. Well, she is a singer besides architect, and knows every sound, tool and instrument in my studio and rehearsal room (when she cleans up there, I have to fly with my Spanish guitar to roost singing "But I'm Still The King") BTW her fine hearing was always attentive in the making of NyRAC!

Your welcome. Forgot to say by budget care I reserve the high end string brands for important recording sessions, but usually have no problem using enuff renowned quality brands. Being D'Addario 010-046 the "good for all" for daily routine use. The .012 set in my archtop jazz box last long, I tend to re-strings it every 4 or 5 months as is not my most used guitar.

Autana, no particular wish at all. The fact is that we all - I think - appreciated how much TRUE and realistic are the classical sounds you have obtained, so...my only wish is that you may obtain similar results with steel string guitar sounds, that's all...

Curious how that might work - typically a genuine Nylon string GK guitar as a controller often yields a different sonic experience when auditioning most patches created by a Steel String GK Controller.

Despite the hype - the underlying guitar and string type plays a major role in your resulting DSP modeled guitar sound

I find that too. But I'm not beyond tweaking until I'm happy (in fact, having a tweaking challenge makes me happy). For covers I have complete duplicate sets of patches for Strat and nylon, each tweaked to be similar enough to get away with so I can use either guitar, depending on mood.

Itching to try these, but have to finish some mixing for a client first.

Interesting subject, when I was creating the first NyRAC patches could try 2 or 3 with my Godin multiac (ACS-SA) which at that moment had very worn strings (I didn't continue testing in those conditions) the result sound was another thing that xtSA or GK-3, dark and lifeless! surprising if naively we thought "but there are nylon strings !! and curiously, acoustic steel guitars patches sound fantastic with my Multiac! so I agree with Elantric remark about a different sonic experience compared to metal stringed controllers.  I'm waiting for new nylon strings set from the supplier, as soon as restring Multiac with fresh set I will do a full test and report.

- Something special?
I use a Primova GKFX21 Subsonic Filter in my GP-10 . Although there has said it is not quite necessary in GP-10, at least not as much as with GR-55, I perceive a improvement in the response of my old electronic Godin XTSA , I use it during all the NyRAC production process.

-String gauge: .010 ~ .046, Cleartone

I noticed that some patches, like Latin, are (sound) distorted esp. when sound is fading out (think: last milliseconds of working noise gate for example).
First suspect was "too high level on piezzo" or/and new RMC in your xtSA but I tested with GK3 on start and still was the same. After on/off switching blocks in FX chain I discoverd that problem is in EQ.
Mostly in second EQ and very high level settings on it.

Thank you Spider by mentioning it.

Before start working NyRAC on the GP-10, I did a preliminary investigation, and use my DAW, there was where initially I created the frequency curves and values, which then were transcribed to GP-10. For this purpose I recorded audio samples of COSM nylon model with all GP-10 effect modules off, just crude "nude" audio via USB to DAW. I noticed the dynamic range of nylon instrument was directly related to sensitivity (SENS) in the GK setting,in a very narrow and involved way. When the GK sensitivity is reduced, for example to 10, and you play softly, some notes lose high frequencies content and turn dark, and at certain threshold very soft attack result in muted notes. Maybe it has to do in some way with the issue of VG-99 Nylon COSM guitar, and here I quote Elantric:

Quote from: Elantric on July 08, 2011, 11:54:11 PM
The VG-99 Nylon COSM guitar "bug" does exist, There is a threshold (more like a brick wall) that exists while fingerpicking softly on the upper strings where the natural expected smooth linear lowered output volume is not experienced, instead you will have what appears to be drop outs, no sound,  "dead unresponsive strings"  - its very much like falling off a cliff, or suspect you have an intermittent failure of your hex PU. Only a heavy  picking attack will resurrect the temporarily "dead" Nylon COSM model's upper strings.

Its worth exploring the relationship of the GK PU Noise Suppressor settings  during the VG-99 Nylon COSM guitar "bug".

It might be "fixed" if you turn OFF the VG-99 GK PU Noise Suppressor (See VG-99 Owners manual Page 105)

"NS (Noise Suppressor)
This effect reduces the noise and hum picked up by guitar pickups.
Since it suppresses the noise in synchronization with the envelope of
the guitar sound (the way in which the guitar sound decays over
time), it has very little effect on the guitar sound, and does not harm
the natural character of the sound.
"

In the case of VG-99, GK PU Noise Suppressor settings are mentioned. Roland probably has improved and corrected the Nylon COSM model, but the unpleasant issue still at soft playing is in the GP-10, maybe in a  lesser extent, but there is.
In the other side, with hard playing and higher GK SENS, there is an harsh noise not perceived until HIGH FREQUENCIES EQ is raised.  The EQ only reveals the distortion, does not produce it, when the extreme values of high frequency are used as the way to achieve the rich bright sound of a real acoustic guitar. In the case of NyRAC the phenomena is more notorious in some patches that need more high EQ or brilliance as part of its style nature. like Nylon Latin or NylonRockPop. Also High EQ output level can be a help factor, lower it can reduce clipping distortion.

To achieve a dynamic response performance with nylon model, is necessary to determine the personal way of playing. In my case I use a broad range, I go from something intense or hard to soft suddenly.

When high frequency values in the second EQ is reduced, we will note  the distortion start to be hidden, but some styles lose their authenticity. We can not alter only the second EQ, we also have to compensate the first EQ to maintain the aural image resulting of the interaction of the two EQ, which is mentioned by Bill Rupert.

In the following examples of audio, I record crude nylon in the DAW and there configured the EQ similar way that the GP-10. The recordings are made with different GK sensitivities with two intensities of playing, soft and hard. In the graphs you can see the EQ values used for NyRAC, and how when high frequencies are lowered, less distortion is heard under high GK sensitivity values.

For the next revision of NyRAC, I will create some patches to implement the alternative use of EXP / ON with high EQ, in a variable range to suit user preferences.  But is strongly recommend adjust the GK  sensitivity values the more accurate according to personal playing style.

I tried on xtSA (old RMC) with SEN settings similar to yours and then set to ca. 20-30. Lower settings helped but it looks like to much boost on Out Level setting in second EQ. Reduction o Hights boost helped too but problem is for me in global EQ. I lowerd output level on both EQ and add more volume using main Vol knob.

Great! I think a balance between SENS, EQ Out level and frequency adjustment is the key. It could recommend an average setting, but I think it would be a little different for each user. In my demo recordings of video and audio, I used the same patches you got, and there is no distortion with GK-3 nor with RMC piezo, but by increasing the EQ level, some clipping appeared. Situations are different.
I would like to know the users NyRAC conditions. There affect RMC versions with different output levels or GK-3 hex's PU string height action, distance to bridge, may be important factors in how a specific patch reacts. Things like what kind of playing technique use, alt. pickng, chicken picking, classical finger style. each produces different output levels and emphasis on different frequencies. With that info I could to compile individual user information into a PDF booklet and help to improve the experience and enjoyment of NyRAC.
Thanks.

I'm, talking not about distortion like in el. guitar. It is some part of the nylon guitar sound. Base is like should be "classical guitar" but I hear some distortion in highest register. The same with GK and RMC but not on all patches. Only where you set EQ +19 dB or similar. It is sound like "digital clipping".

Yes, of course, I think we are talking about the same thing.  It is like there is a "zone" in the COSM Nylon model prone to produce digital clipping when the EQ out level is raised, and just is the zone where I worked, found and figured out the REAL tone concept behind NyRAC. However I dont think the essence of the style will be seriously affected by lowered EQ, and even less if clipping is reduced or eliminated.  In most "Nylon" patches before NyRAC, factory or users from, that zone is not explored, so it was snugly hidden, exempting us of enjoy the "real spirit" underlying nylon model. This is exciting! Roland engineers do not know what they have created, maybe they are just numbers and calculations (most of corny GR-55 factory patches says much of that hehe). In the meantime we will continue educating the creature..

We do know that the output level of the RMC Polydrive Board inside Godin xtSA/ LGXA was lowered back in Mid 2011, but did not end up in production Godin's until 2012

The suggested GK Sensitivity Pre 2012 = "0"  - because the pre 2012 RMC Polydrive board was a bit too hot and will "clip (distort) the Roland/Boss GK processor, or lack dynamic range when GK Sensitivity is set too high

Compare to 2012 and newer  RMC Polydrive board with lower output signal - the latest  GK Sensitivity I recommend a GK Sensitivity of "45-55"

So when comparing GK settings , its important to "what year is your Godin?

This is fully detailed in the Godin xtSA thread here

I'm using these settings below with much success using my 2012 Godin xTSA (RMC) and stock GR-55 (rev 1.50 firmware ) and Boss GP-10

Thanks Jim Williams!

On both my xTSA'a - the COSM Modleling sounds most excellent .

Absolutely.  RMC PolyDrive year is so important and crucial factor in settings you do.

My 2008 xtSA have a pre 2012 "2003" PolyDrive RMC, and I use to set SENS to 05-15 to 25-30 depending of the patch and playing style for the purpose. But with NyRAC when settings under 15, the COSM nylon model present the already commented hysteresis or bug with soft playing, mainly fingerstyle, not so notorious as with VG-99, but there is.

Worth to listen this, recorded with xtSA, SENS: 10  and NyRAC nylon patch, in the first part the sound is dark at soft playing and even some notes are muted. In the second half of demo, I play louder, and sound better overall, without mute notes or darkness.

As we know getting the GK Sensitivity in the ideal range for YOUR actual instrument is crucial - and this will vary per individual instrument / year / revision / etc.
QuoteMy 2008 xtSA have a pre 2012 "2003" PolyDrive RMC, and I use to set SENS to 05-15 to 25-30 depending of the patch and playing style for the purpose.
And in the VG-99 discussions, we mentioned the "trick" of using separate GK Sensitivity ranges - depending on the task ( GTR-MIDI vs Hi Gain Rock Solo vs Triggering Nylon samples

Same paradigm applies to GR-55 and GP-10 as well.

So far, I think that all of this is great! I'm brand new to it. I just got my GP-10 and haven't even install the pickup yet.  I'm looking forward to seeing what happens once I connect it and start recording.

What are you using to amplify your GP-10?

I really like your classical/nylon stringed sounds. I can't wait to get a good classical tone.

QuoteWhat are you using to amplify your GP-10?

In my home studio usually I connect GP-10 and GR-55 directly to my studio hi-fi stereo mixer.
For live/stage I use two ROLAND CUBE 80XL.
Since tone characteristics and frequency ranges are different between different audio systems, is important in each case to select the most adequate output mode in GP-10 (this feature is NOT available in the Boss Tone Studio editor, it can only be accessed directly from your GP-10 - by press "system" once.)
For HI-FI system (home, studio,PA) select LINE / PHONES. To connect GP-10 to a guitar amp select one of the other 7 modes. If you play live/stage and need to connect GP-10 to the PA system or a full range keyboard amp, use LINE / PHONES output mode.

Thank you so much Autana! The one thing that disappointed me about the GP10 was the nylon string model. Not any more :)

This has really helped me to appreciate what can be accomplished by taking the time to learn about your modeler of choice and think about what your trying to create. I've been planning an analog board with the GP10 first in the chain, but now I'm forced to pause and reconsider!

This opens up a range of sonic possibilities, thanks for demoing NyRAC with your guitar fretless.
One notable feature of fretless instruments, lies in the tone response from different levels of playing intensity, which sonically translate differently than a normal guitar. In some of my NyRAC patches, the EXP / ON pedal is assigned to frequency variations, you could try to see how it sounds in your fretless guitar, although for fretless should be allocated a much wider frequency range to EXP pedal.
Also I could design a special patch and it would be great if you could provide me with a six string separate audio sample recording of your fretless guitar from your DAW with GP-10 driver. So I could load back it into my DAW in RE-AMP mode as a great help to design a fretless patch.

Thanks for the real sample reference, it sound so great,  I wrote a comment in your SC  "Wow!!  such a jazzy phrasing sound absolutely "own way" with your fretless guitar and your playing."
BTW, I love fretless guitar sound from always.

I started out with fretless since I loved the woody singing sound,
Later I discovered all the things you can't do on a fretted guitar that you can on a fretless.

I've heard of flamenco played on fretless never found any music recorded , have you ?

Of course, the excellent videos Elantric quoted are a proof of that. For 35 years the echoes of the fretless guitar in flamenco and Word music, new age and jazz have come to my ears. I can recommend also listen to my dear friend Chema Vilchez, incredible and very important Spanish musician. Him navigates in the waters of jazz, flamenco and fusion like a fish in water.

While this video features him with stringed guitar and fretless bass guitar plus guitar-sitar, he is an acomplished flamenco fretless guitar player too. This is a amazing sample of his deeper journey in alternative forms of music, flamenco in this case.
BTW Elantric, you do know what is that virtual synth appearing at 0:33 ?

QuoteThe tuning is  E A D G B E, like a regular guitar but octave lower. Sounds almost like a bass. String Gauge:.024/.034/.044/.056/.072/.084 The key is that Bill Bartolini made a special pickup for this instrument, and for that reason the sound is very warm. Greetings from Spain

Yes, I can see it,  you righ and agee.
From my perspective I tend to unite many styles under the "world" music term . That help me to preserve a most universal musical sense. I created NyRAC with that premise at mind.

A request to add to the collection would be , a 12 string ovation nylon as well as a 6 stringed one , and a Oud , I've tried but the oud is difficult , detuning the courses seems to only create chorus fx instead of hearing 2 strings tuned the to the same ( almost ) pitch

I'm looking forward to heading down to the library internet connection to check out the demo's. I thought that the vg8 with upgrade, had an ok nylon model, especially when i played my nylon stringed godin multiac through it (ha). I am curious just how the two linked eq's are used to create this nylon model. I don't own a gp-10, so i can't view the setting. So one eq, eq's the first eq?

I did DL the editor and cloned one into the 99. Had to tweak it a bit after as they play a little bassy for my taste. But theyre really good and transfer well.. // Ill definitely be using at least one of these patches in my VG-99.//

Hey that would be cool to try to clone these patches into a vg8 ex and thanks for letting me know that roland will now let us download the gp-10 tone studio editor without having to own that product. My question was aimed more at the technical aspects of stacking eq's, in this case three counting the amp tone controls, in order to model acoustic instrument sounds. I seek this information not neccesarily to 'clone' patches from one unit type to another (sounds cool though) but to apply this technique to other elements of sound creation. I had not heard about or thought about stacking eq's before reading this thread. The vg8 ex  manuel briefly talks about  changing the perception of instrument body size by using gains or reductions  in resonant frequency, but they aren't stacking eq's to acieve that model. It's interesting that a billiant programer can change the sound of steel to nylon using stacked eq's.  In a way, that excellent guitar demo had a better tone than just an amped nylon string guitar. Sort of the best of steel and nylon, sort of like a new instrument altogether.

The particular and beautiful Lute timbre and octave higher string pairs are VERY clean and defined, a challenge since GP-10 artifacts at higher pitch strings could be a drawback in this case. A second COSM instrument source as is founded in VG-99 would make it easier. Anyway I have an idea, it could be the key. I will include it in my list, since now I have to work in the "CUATRO", an instrument similar to ukulele which is the base of our folkloric music in my country.

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F-eMHh0pX5M0c%2FVZ2muT7DsjI%2FAAAAAAAAAwg%2FFg3UasnMGrg%2Fs1600%2Fcuatro1.jpg&hash=4a86c9f0b75b94b7b6b4e41543d11ca08dd3fc02)

C4 Trio is a amazing group of virtuosos of the Cuatro in my country, they have brought this instrument beyond imaginable limits! the "C4" in the band name is a word game with C and 4 (Cuatro "four" in English) as reference to their explosive virtuoso style.

In my country, musicians grown an entire life surrounded by acoustic instruments such as guitar, cuatro (ukulele cousin) tiple, mandolin, harp llanera "arpa llanera" etc. and its sound is like the air we breathe.

I was a little surprised that the GK-3/no GK-3 price difference is only $50...

Thanks so much for these patches!

In my country, musicians grown an entire life surrounded by acoustic instruments such as guitar, cuatro (ukulele cousin) tiple, mandolin, harp llanera "arpa llanera" etc. and its sound is like the air we breathe.

Thank you for the hard work you've put into making these patches, to be honest this video example was one of the reasons I've bought the GP-10 with the GK-3 pickup - and the much praised acoustic modeling in general. Unfortunately it sounds nothing like in the demo video on my end. If anything it sounds more like the short example at the start. Like a clean electric/ukulele...something :( And the A and D strings have a strange ''quack'' to them. Pretty sure I've set everything up correctly so I don't know why I have such poor results but it's nothing like I've expected.
Unless I find out I'm doing something wrong, the gp-10 is going back. But thank you anyway, if nothing else it's great to listen to you play and obviously others get better results than me.  ???

the differences in tone are due to the OP's (Autana) use of a Godin xtSA with RMC piezo pickups when making these Boss GP-10 Nylon Real Acoustic Collection patches and MP3 demos recordings
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=17683.msg126221#msg126221

We know there are sonic differences between a GK-3 and Piezo Hex PU

I'd say must be set up issue as I ported the patches over to VG99 matching all settings and achieved the same tone with my GK3 equipped Ibanez - have a look in the VG99 patches section to hear the demos remembering the are gk3 driven
Title: Re: GP-10 - Nylon Real Acoustic Collection
Post by: jorelprime on March 02, 2017, 01:08:05 PM
Thanks for the replies, yeah I don't know maybe it is a set up issue but the only thing it can be is perhaps the string height at the lowest strings (they are quite low but do not touch the pickup - and my action is high but I have a 9.5 inch radius strat and could only fit the gk-3 by gluing it to the pickguard  ::) ) but the highest are fine but still sound poor compared to the samples. I guess I should have taken the different guitar into consideration.
Also, the tracking and latency on GR300 patches is quite poor, (all of them) but on some synth patches (like the ones shared here) it's perfect. Like I said, probably will create a topic about my issues but I was silly anyway to think anything could actually replace, you know, an actual acoustic guitar. Was hoping this could provide me with an on stage setup to switch sound mid-song without switching guitars. Looks like not.

Quote ''but I was silly anyway to think anything could actually replace, you know, an actual acoustic guitar. Was hoping this could provide me with an on stage setup to switch sound mid-song without switching guitars. Looks like not.''
unquote

those godin guitars with the bridge piezo pickups will by themselves convey a sense of an acoustic quality.

for the band  that i  played with, i used a washburn jazz guitar (oval soundhole) with a piezo pickup and one neck position mag pup.

we had to switch between a jazz tune like 'stolen moments' and an acoustic sound for a  tune like 'mediterranean sundance' so that pickup system worked well for that. I had a gk2 also mounted on that guitar and for the acoustic stuff, along with the piezo, i would add a hint of a vg8 acoustic model.

so it is possible to acheive electric and acoustic tones from one guitar. And, imo, the acoustic models from the vg99 and gp10 are light years ahead of the vg8.

it just takes some time to dial it in.

If you can't get great acoustic tones out of the GP-10 then I would say it is not the fault of the device. Are you going through a guitar amp?  If so, there is the problem. You need a FRFR system. Try a nice set of headphones, and experience wonderful acoustic sounds. There are thousands of people on this forum that use the VG99, GP10, and ATG-1 for acoustic sounds and don't find it silly at all.

Well I only got the device today and tried all of the patches from this pack and none of them work for me. I created a short two minute test with usb direct to reaper. Excuse the bad playing, I did play around the D string a bit since it's giving me a weird quack. I was using the aux in of Boss Katana 50 and also tried the acoustic channel on it. I also played through my studio monitoring headphones and it was better yes but not by a whole lot. I'm also pretty sure the set up is correct (as I will describe in a seperate topic) so, well, I guess I'm not one of those thousands. Don't know how much I can experiment myself, even the factory Nylon preset sounds more like a clean electric. For example, not even close as good as in the YT video by WayneJones where he demos the patches. But don't know what guitar he is using.

Anyway, here is the test: https://soundcloud.com/roger-fedex/acousticdemo

I started with the NylonFlamenco and then switched through a few presets. Again, sorry for the playing but it should serve as a demonstration.

Quote. I was using the aux in of Boss Katana 50 and also tried the acoustic channel on it.

FWIW - a Katana will not be ideal for Synth use

While it claims to have a Acoustic Amp Model setting for acoustic guitars, its far from being a Full Range Flat response Amplification system, required for best results with GP-10

Instead audition the GP-10 patches with quality Studio headphones ( ATH-M50X) connected directly to GP-10 headphone output

Thank you, Jorelprime. I am sorry you get some problems, but please do not give up.  While I design the patches of NyRac starting from a Godin xtSA (RMC piezo) also test it extensively on a guitar equipped with GK-3, and in the video there are demos with both guitars. , as everyone has said it is important to consider the best possible configuration, sometimes it is not so easy, but in the end the rewards are worth it.
I have a Godin MultiAc SA, which I use for very high ends recordings, but also many times when I need to go reduced and practical for gigs, I used my GP-10 with NyRAC to replace the real nylon guitar,  with excellent and total success, the WOW factor is inevitable when the audience noted an electric guitar sounding like a Spanish guitar!  Especially the musicians and guitar players in the audience. Sometimes people even accuse me of having backing tracks with the prerecorded nylon guitar @LOL . The material performed has been from Spanish pop, flamenco, jazz, acoustic Latin, smooth jazz and so, at November 2016  I played Spain from Chick Corea and Mediterranean Sundance in an music school,  it was funny the students were more focused on ask about my "nylonized electric guitar than my performance... oops

Regarding your problem, I noticed that in addition to the GP-10 sensitivity, height (Gk-3 Hex pups height must be 1 mm gap between GK3 top and bottom of the strings) and distance settings of the GK-3, other factors affect, for example, my PRS BM, which is based on a Les Paul, has no problem with the GK-3 and patches, but on my Gibson LPJ also with GK-3, there's the same problem as yours. I think it has to do with the vibrational frequencies characteristics from each string/guitar type, also guitar bridges made of different materials, the woods and body resonance on each guitar. Even the strings types used, there are brighter and darker strings (reliant on materials) I recently did an experiment using flatwound strings for D, A, E and that helped a lot, but unfortunately drastically changed the sound on other types of COSM models, finally I turn to ClearTone coated strings (.010) , which seems "cut" certain squeaky frequencies over the GK-3, in bottom strings.

Also, as sec6 noted, running through a guitar amplifier alters the frequency palette in favor of a more electric and less natural acoustical sound. I created NyRAC under home studio conditions, with pro flat audio monitors as reference, but as I mentioned, for live and gigs, I have successfully used FRFR systems or my Roland CUBE 80-XL or combinations of both. As a additional tip I use a Behringer UltraCurve DEQ2496 for a definite final touch of acoustic details.

I think is probable you are using BTS (Boss Tone Studio) for editing and handling patches and banks in your GP-10. Which is fine as long as you are aware of the problems BTS has, already reported to Roland / Boss (not fix yet) and announced here https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=17889.0 . However, to edit the parameters of distance and sensitivity of the strings, I have found much better GP-10 editor Gumtown https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=15464.0, since it allows monitoring The changes of these parameters with the audio in real time. That is not possible in BTS, as it bypass the audio from patch when entering in the GK 3 Setup edit window.

Finally, for the problem with my LesPaul / GK-3, similar to yours, I have a tip for you and hope it work in your side, that consists of cheating the system by selecting a piezo mic instead of the GK-3 in the GP-10 options and also tweaking a little with piezo high and lows adjust. Even though the original tonal characteristics of the patch change a bit, the result is quite good. The video says more than a thousand words, download it from the link indicated and watch it carefully. The editor used is the GP-10 Edit from Gumtown.

The video is packed in rar archive, please download, unpack and play. NOTE: it contain audio (start at 00:12
- NyRAC patched: NyLSmoothJazz
- I use my Gibson LP/w GK with similar problem.
- from 00:12 ~ 00:24  I play gently moderately soft, no "quack", GK type set to GK-3.
- at 00:26 I play with more force and attack, the "quack" arise !
- at 00:31 I change the GK setting to PIEZO, audio reflect the "cheating" !
From here on you can see the setting changes and the results in the sound. The best results were obtained by cheating the system with Piezo and Piezo L selection and tweaking with Piezo Tone High/Low.
The other settings can serve as reference if you want, but it depends on your guitar and also on your play style, technique (pick, fingerpicking/style etc)
I hope this can be a help for you and anyone with this annoyance.

Also I suggest read Elantric recommendations at  https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=10782.msg146221#msg146221 about hexpup height.

It does encourage me to try everything to get decent results and also, I was not aware of that problem with the BTS (which I am using) nor the other editor being available. Autana mentioned something that I thought I'd emphasize - I find these things are super sensitive to the pressure you are using to produce notes.  I find if I play very lightly and gently (example one third less pressure to enunciate a note) it produces a more acoustic realism on the steel string and nylon string guitar models.

I find that if I play like I'm playing a rock and roll guitar part it loses something.  So back off a little bit.

Over the years with these things and doing it for years I find I'm a better and more dynamic player when playing regular guitars and not just GK - try it!

Heh, yeah, you are of course very correct on the last sentence, sometimes I feel like throwing out everything and just stick to a good acoustic <- would probably be much more beneficial to me, compared to all the ''toys'' I keep on buying.  :P

Anyway, a bit of an update. Been playing around with that editor and the piezo settings and testing out different patches from this pack. I was also recording a lot of the testing. Somehow during playing I still wasn't really feeling it, especially on the low strings and when strumming chords. But then I don't do a lot of that, I like classical fingerstyle (the easy pieces that I can manage hehe) and ''flamenco'', and I put that in '' '' because I really only pretend to do it. So a mixture of more faster soloing and fingerpicking pieces. And while listening back on the test recordings I made, I was actually quite pleased with some of the results. Did get rid of that ''quack'' for the most part, but then the ''price'' was a bit unbalanced sound, don't know how else to call it, at the low strings. Especially the low E, can't get it to sound really good and ''natural'' and thus chording is so-so.
Then one of my pals, also a guitarist came to visit and I left the track playing. His comment was ''thats some good acoustic playing, sounds like you'' and then asked me what guitar I used since I am currently out of an acoustic (I actually returned an Ibanez TCM50 for the GP...) and I went ''huh''. I guess our own ears are much more critical of something - especially when one knows we are using a GK to model something. He thought it was an actual acoustic guitar and liked the tone - and he's not a bad player.

And listening some more, it does get the job done. I'd like to play some pieces like Malmsteen's Trilogy Suite Op 5 and Icarus Dream Suite Opus 4 and those have acoustic guitar parts in them. Swapping that on the stage would be a pain + bringing another acoustic. This will have to do. And honestly, listening now to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmFzT_BtVLk (and no I'm not a huge fan of his (after the first 3 albums anyway) but this is a good example of - imo - not so good acoustic tone  ;D ) and what I get from the GP, I think it's fairly close. If not on the same level. I must admit though, I haven't owned a nylon stringed acoustic in years. Just steel stinged ones. And on that note, this thing cannot emulate a steel stringed dreadnought, obviously. Haven't found a convincing patch for steel string yet.

But once again, thank you to Autana for the tips and these patches. A bit more work and experimenting and I'll probably even out the other kinks too. I can say I do get better results with this than I got with the Ibanez TCM50 into Katana's acoustic channel and also an Epiphone PR5 into Zoom G5 and using that to record into reaper. The GP-10 gives better results.

I know that you don't own it, however the vg99 acoustic pod series patch by aliensporebomb have a great sounding acoustic electric guitar (steel string) on chanell B. I have to believe the gp10 can also perform in this reguard.

Amazing work with the Nylon patches. It is incredible how this GP-10 captures the tone of each of these different classical guitars.  :)

Because Gumtowns GP 10 editor is still a bit of a work in progress

today the most stable is the official Boss Tone Studio for GP 10

and it's best to use that for the GP-10 patches we host here
That is the same app that was used when a Ainsoph created hiis GP-10 nylon patches

Ainsophs or Autana's  GP-10 patches will NOT load into other VG-/GR systems

However some members have successfully used the "Patch Cloning"technique to transfer Autana's GP-10  Nylon Real Acoustic patches to GR-55  / VG-99

¡ Deveras socio , estas suenan de aquellas !

And...I received my GP-10 Yesterday (Wednesday) as scheduled. I had family medical emergency stuff going on and a studio client in the evening, but after a long day today I was able to download the NyRAC patches and I'm so happy I did! I literally bought this unit because of the demos of these patches you made and now I'm able to list the LTD Nylon String solid body electro/acoustic guitar that I just didn't enjoy. Thank you! And these patches are record worthy. I'm so happy. If you have any kind of patreon account or something to accept donations, I will gladly send you a donation! These are incredible! Thank you again!

Thanks so much to all for comments, I am glad to know NyRAC has been useful. I apologize for my absence in VGF, the reason is very critical circumstances in my country Venezuela. If you wish to make a donation, even with little I assure it will be very welcome. I am respectfull of forum rules, so, if interested, please msg me to inbox for details.
Best regards to everyone.

I'm donating a full MIDX-20 sell to you Carlos. It was imaginable horrifying reading.
You other guys here, like me, having a job in a friendly country, sitting in a room with expensive equipment (and maybe even having the NyRac patches in your GP-10) in a nice house and with food on the table for the family, please this time, consider helping a contributing VGF friend.

Update:

Fully agree, Robert!

Let me just point out that I often get notices when signing in here that this forum is not secure. Given the political situation, it might be advantageous to keep your support between yourselves and Carlos/Autana between yourselves and him- try to fly under the radar, so to speak. I hope it's not necessary, but caution may be appropriate...

Thank you admin!
I got the .tsl file!
I had a problem installing the software for GP10 - BOSS Central but then came across this:

"BOSS TONE STUDIO: PROBLEMS WITH INSTALLATION
If you've tried to install the latest version of BOSS Tone Studio and the installation process keeps quitting before completion, please download the latest version of Adobe Air at:

https://get.adobe.com/air/

Once you have downloaded and installed Adobe Air, try installing BOSS Tone Studio again."

Once installed Air then BOSS then I could load the 20 Nylon patches into the GP10
thanks

Yes- It will never match  - because the GT-100 is focused on AMP emulation and FX  - and is NOT a "VGUITAR system with  COSM Guitar Modeling -

only the GP-10, GR-55, VG-99, VG-88, VG-8 do "V-Guitar"

@Autana - I've got to say that this list of patches are just wonderful!! Of course, each person may need to tweak a tad bit depending on their output, but the sounds are just what I was looking for when I got my GP-10. And I just noticed that my favorite nylon patch is the Autana-one - JAJAJA! Wow, I didn't realize that was your user name. Bravo on the patch manipulation!!!

If you use GP-10Edit (another FxFloorBoard editor), and load the patch file offline (or with the GP-10),
it can display a text view of all the patch parameter settings.

If you use GP-10Edit (another FxFloorBoard editor), and load the patch file offline (or with the GP-10),
it can display a text view of all the patch parameter settings.

Why I didn't thought of that  ???
I made screenshots of all the Tone Studio editor pages before I sold the GP-10, to translate them to the SY-1000  ::)

Thank you

Hi. Im new here. Thx for accepting me. I have a godin sa grand concert with rmc and have recently buyed a gp10. I wonder if the patches from nyrac will work for nylon strings and if there is another patches out there made for classical guitars. I play mostly flamemco but also son cubano and the main purpose in buying the gp10 was to try to get sthing similar to a tres cubano. Sbody knows how?
Thx and srry for my english and my ignorance

You need the correct driver and Boss Tone Studion for windows or macOS
