The VG-8 is now 16 years old. Actually it should work very well with all hex pickup types, once the strings sensitivity is set.

It is not a "Guitar Synth" nor a Guitar to MIDi converter, thus it has much less headaches and zero problems with "tracking" and no latency when processing and generating some very amazing sounds.

In the Roland VG-8, VG-88, VG-99 - the actual guitar string is the "Tone generator" signal source for all processing - and (unlike Guitar to MIDI rigs) the processed sound output is instantaneous for all strings.

Yes you may use a GK-3 with the VG-8, select the "GK-2A" as pickup type, and adjust the strings sensitivity as stated in the VG-8 manual.

As far as i know the S1 update is the only  upgrade for the original VG-8

Voice Crystal also released some sound cards for the vg-8.  I don't use it anymore, but still have the sound cards.  Let me know if you are interested in buying them.  Info is here:
