This Roland document "INFOCUS02.pdf" is a "MUST READ" for all GR-55  / VG-99 owners,
it walks you through how to use the  Roland Librarian.

EDIT: *** These instructions are based on the Windows version, i believe the Mac version may operate differently ***

OK here is my brief on how to get the Roland GR-55 Librarian working for You,
to save a bulk patch dump or backup of all the User patches,
and restore or re-arrange the patch layout.

1): Run the GR-55 Roland Librarian,

2): From the "Setup" menu open setup mid devices and select GR-55 from the list boxes,
if GR-55 is not shown, ensure the GR-55 is USB connected and the software driver has been installed.

3): From the "Main" window select "Read All", this will take a little while to read all the User patches out of the GR-55.

4): From the 'File' menu select duplicate, and then 'Save As', save with an appropriate file name and maybe also the date of the backup.
This saved file is a backup of all your 297 User patches, and some or all of the patches can be re-loaded at a latter date.
Close the saved file, so only the 'Main' widow remains open with the GR-55 patches.

5): From the 'File' menu select New. This will be used to re-arrange patches to an order you prefer.
At the same time other saved patch files could be opened for copying patches to the new layout.

6): The Librarian does not support drag'n'drop, but does support copy (ctrl + C) and Insert (ctrl + V) shortcut keys.
Highlight a patch from the Main window or any other opened patch file by a single mouse click on the patch name,
then copy it by using the ctrl + C shortcut keys.
Multiple patches can be selected by holding down the ctrl key while selecting multiple patches with the mouse.
Once a list of patches is made, save the file with an appropriate file name if you wish to save the re-arranged patch list.

7): To restore a full patch bulk backup, open the saved patch file and select all the patches with the shortcut key ( ctrl + A )
and copy them with the shortcut key ( ctrl + C ).
Clear the Main window contents (if not already empty) with shortcut key ( ctrl + A ) to select everything
and then press the delete key (DEL).
Now paste the copied patches to the main window by highlighting patch number 1:1
insert the backup patches with the shortcut key ( ctrl + V ).
Now press "Write All" to send the patches to the GR-55, which will replace the existing GR-55 patches with the backup file.

8 ): To restore a patch or a re-arranged patch list, open the saved file from the File menu.
Select all the patches ( ctrl + A) or high light a few selected patches to replace, and copy them with ( ctrl + C).
Clear the Main window contents (if not already empty) with shortcut key ( ctrl + A ) to select everything
and then press the delete key (DEL).
Now paste the copied patches to the main window by highlighting patch number you wish the patch list to start from.
insert the backup patches with the shortcut key ( ctrl + V ).
Now press "Write Selected" to send the selection patches to the GR-55, which will replace the existing GR-55 patches
      with the new patch list.

Is it possible to save files to a usb thumb drive from a pc and just plug it into the gr55 and restore the files onto it? Or do i need to link my gr 55 up to the pc and use the librarian? Sorry if this is a stupid question....

The GR-55 can backup/restore to a USB thumb drive ....BUT... it is a different format from the librarian patch files, the backup is a complete system/global/guitar mode patches/bass mode patches backup of everything.
It's file is typically labelled GR55.SVD

hi... just getting started with the gr55 and librarian and very happy to see your thumbnail review. Until you laying out the path i had no clue what to do!! But with your help I have successfully imported the patches from the gr55 into [mac] computer.
My first question is that unlike the imported list where
1-1 is metal synth lead,
1-2 is 12ag and ch org ,
  1-3 is Ultimate Pulse

the info on the Gr55 has
1-1 metal synth lead
1-2 Rock lead organ
1-3 Gr-300 ctl:+1oct

I do not understand the filing structure... can you be most kind and explain?

thanks
fred
