Well, nosaintnick mentioned this system in the "No "pure MIDI" options?" thread on this forum, and I had never heard of it.

Has anyone here ever used a guitar so equipped? Or even heard of this device?
To judge by the form factor, I wonder if this has any technological similarities to the upcoming Fishman system.

I had one years ago.  I returned it for a refund.  Steve Morse used one.

I wish I could add more to the discussion but I've never used one. At that price it's definitely more suited for people who already have synths or instrument plug-ins. What made you return yours Guitarbot, bad tracking?

Guitarbot

Yes, bad tracking.  Lots of drop outs.  I would think they are better now.?  The Gr-55 is the best that I have ever owned.

If I remember correctly, at least 15 years ago, Ovation had a guitar line that had a built-in hex pickup with an outboard controller/ synth module that was built by Shadow. It was the first guitar synth I ever played, and it actually tracked fairly well. I can't remember for sure, but I don't think that the controller had a MIDI output.

O.K. I was correct. I found this info on the Troubador Tech site:

"MIDI guitar pioneer Shadow's first offering was the rack-mounted GTM-6 guitar-to-MIDI converter and companion hex pickup. Kaman briefly distributed this system, and offered four acoustic guitars--Ovation and Takamine, steel-string and nylon-string-- with Shadow hex pickups built in. To the best of my knowledge, these were the first nylon-string MIDI guitars in the world. An electric guitar version of the GTM-6 was sold with the Charvel nameplate. "
