Conceptually it appeals to me. The choice of pre and power amp tubes and the mix and match capability. Two distinct amps in one head.

Ah, the same dealer that had the large GK guitar display got one of these in - I guess I have to try it.  I never did see what they were asking for it price wise.

I played the THR100, But it only has Reverb  - and no other FX
http://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical-instruments/guitars-basses/amps/thrh/thr100hd/

the big deal is ability to load IR cab files using its USB interface and Yamaha software for Win/ Mac

For me it sounded and felt like a large gigible version of the sounds and feel of the Amp sims on my portable Yamaha THR-10 ( which is a good thing!) -

But I found a few too many omissions for the THR100/THR100D's  MSRP  price
It lacks 5 pin DIN MIDI jack for use with MIDI foot controllers
No FX  - only reverb

Appears to be another device that will benefit from a custom third party USB Host to MIDI converter - to integrate with a  larger Live Rig control system as has been done with the Fender Mustang Amps

At the THR100D price point with cabs  I find more tones, more capability, FX  with a Atomic AmpliFIRE + a powered cab for less money.

I even prefer the Quilter MicroPro Mach 2

I simply cannot believe they release a digital amp without presets and MIDI in 2015...

Cannot believe too they put a on-line survey for the product with a lot of repetitive questions about most of the original THR10 features and ended doing something completely different. Bizarre.

As I said, a "THR30" with footswitch, more presets, more effects (as modulated and dual delays, boosters and overdrives), all the amp models freely downloadable and combined, 5" speakers, mic input and slave output, would be obviously a huge success, even in a higher pricepoint.

The same for the THR100 concept. Instead of the grill (could be put backwards), could have the effects and preset section in the THR10 style, straightforward, no display, with computer deeper editing.

Quick 'n dirty scratch to illustrate how natural can be without compromise the original "retro" (read non-LCD) interface :

All the THR10 features plus mic preamp and 20 presets. MIDI and slave output in the back.

DG-stomp-like naming (clean I & II, Crunch I & II, hi-gain I & II and Lead I & II would work better for downloadable models.

An smaller stereo 2x6" coaxial full range speaker would turn in a nice mini stack, too. Even with the simple model.

I think anyone would easily pay $200 more for this do-it-all amp...

Thanks for the expanded info Elantric.

The omission of midi control is disappointing. The lack of separate effects loops for each channel is also a drag. The omission of in built effects not so much. Effects pedals are just getting better these days. More sophistication and more sounds. I personally look for the more exotic pedals that cover the basics and then some. Even a digital delay, at minimum, must have tap tempo, sub divisions, modulation control, trails and expression in.

Anyways, for me, I like that Yamaha built an amp (2 amps in  one actually) that allows the independent selection of pre and power amp types, that approximates a selection of the bread and butter amp tones. As opposed to modellers with 100's of amps that at the end of the day hark back to the stalwart amps anyway. BTW I have nothing against the hugely sophisticated stuff.

It just needs to sound fantastic and be inspiring.

Update:  I just heard today that the effects loop IS stereo - you can run separate effects on each channel.  You just need to use what the Yamaha tech in the Andertons (UK) video called a "standard stereo insert cable".

Hmmmmm.

I still like the looks and weight of this unit and the sounds, but is the Boss Katana a better overall head?  I do like the dual amp aspect, it's a bit like the VG-99 with it's dual COSM paths.  The Katana certainly is a better priced piece.

It has its own footswitch that is included so it lessens the sting of no MIDI.

In the last rehearsal before NYE we went into a new place. They had THR100D coupled with Bugera  4x12 cabs.
My friend, who builds Valve Amps, was using its Les Paul with it together with some FX (OD /Chorus / Delay / Reverb) in front of the amp with a Zoom G3 so he used only the clean model. He tried the clean model direct with no Zoom in between and the overall sound was good, balanced and crisp. The Valve model was set on 6L6 all the time, we didn't played with that.
He didn't use any THR footswitch but next time he will, putting the Zoom in the FX loop.
Overall the sound was good IMHO, although my friend is skeptical about amp modeling and valve modeling, building the real thing.
I asked the playroom owner about the choice of Yamaha THRs. He told me he had a bargain for those and in this case they have a good sound with less maintenance which for them it's very important.

On average the overall quality of the sound was better than other places we go.
I didn't use any THR because it was my GT-1 debut so it was hooked to a Soundcraft LX7II 24 with SR Technology Live active speakers
as I had Pre Amp and Cab sim on in the unit. Next time I will also try to hook GT-1 as a FX Loop.

On a side note another friend of mine just got a Katana 100 Head 10 days ago and it's enthusiastic about that.
I am invited to party so I will... :-). Thanks to this excellent forum he took that as a no-brainer.
