After the guitar went electric in 1931, guitar technology mostly stayed the same. But what if you could plug an iPhone into the side of one?

The Fusion Guitar is an electric guitar body with an embedded iPhone dock. It is built on existing technology that turns the guitar's analog sound signals into digital information that your iPhone can understand. Apps running on the iPhone let you create and alter sounds, loop your playing, and record full-fledged songs without so much as a microphone (though the gadget plays nicely with all order of music gear that accept audio inputs).

The Indiegogo campaign to raise $60,000 of pre-sales the device launched today.

Musical adapters of this sort have been around for years, but the Fusion Guitar is unique in that the instrument itself is the adapter. The guitar, with an iPhone or iPod Touch inserted into its dock, serves not only as a full rig with pedalboard, but as a lightweight recording studio at the same time.

As the device is simply hardware on its own, it relies on third-party apps to make the most of its capabilities; bring your own iPhone or iPod Touch loaded with music-making apps in order to make the Fusion Guitar useful. The music-making app space is well-trod and you'll have no issue making compelling sounds quickly—the company suggests using apps like Jamup, Bias, and Amplitube.

The instrument is also a great complement to music instruction apps such as Yousician, Guitar Pro, and Guitar Master Class. The position of the iPhone dock means the phone can display notation and chord fingerings in an intuitive place—all you have to do is glance down. It's bound to be a great gift for anyone struggling to learn guitar.

David Auld, co-inventor of the Fusion Guitar, stopped by the Daily Dot's office in New York City to give us a demo. If you like what you see, you can pre-order one starting at $400.

Tradition meets high-tech! The Flamenco Home Studio is a combination of this classic style guitar with a built in screen for lessons and such and educational computer software all hooked up through USB. Very interesting development.

How does it work? Well instead of using pickups to amplify the sound of vibrating strings — the way most guitars work — the gTar users sensors to detect what notes the user is playing in real-time. And it relays this data back to the iPhone.

One of the instrument's most exciting elements is an intuitive feature called SmartPlay. This allows users to play music like a pro, regardless of how experienced they are, as it mutes out incorrectly played notes and helps them through difficult songs.

The free gTar app will include a number of tracks — all of which will be learnable through three levels of difficulty, and a library full of digital sound effects. And Incident says that it plans to add new content to the app on a weekly basis.

As you might have guessed, the gTar won't come cheap. It's expected to retail for close to $500. But, you can score one for just $350 by helping back the project on Kickstarter. It's currently at $17,824 of its $100,000 goal with about 34 days left.

Developers/Hackers

The gTar grew out of a series of hacks and we're very excited to see what the rest of you do to tweak and customize yours. We plan to offer an SDK in the future, so if you're interested in building apps for the gTar, shoot us an e-mail (dev@incidenttech.com). The gTar is also USB-MIDI compliant, so if you're interested in hacking the gTar to create/perform music, we'll be releasing some tutorials and hacks soon!

FAQ

Does the gTar need to be tuned?
Since the gTar is entirely digital, it doesn't care whether the strings are in tune or not. Keeping reasonable tension on the strings will improve the performance and sensitivity of the gTar.

Where does the gTar get power from?
The gTar has an internal battery that lasts between 6 to 8 hours on a full charge.  To both power and charge the gTar, you can use the included USB charger or plug the gTar into any standard USB dock on a computer or charger of equivalent power.

What phones will be supported? Currently we plan to support the iPhone 4/4S. We hope to support other devices in the future.

How do I get the gTar app? The gTar app will be available for free in the App Store before we ship the gTar. It is already been built and approved.

Will this teach me how to play on a "normal" guitar? The strings and fret layout of the gTar has been designed to be virtually identical to that of a traditional guitar, playing it will teach you the same fundamentals that you would need to play on a traditional guitar.

How do Song Selections work? If you've selected any of the reward tiers that offer you a Song Selection, we will work with you to integrate a song of your choosing into the app. Since some things (like licensing restrictions) are out of our hands, we can't guarantee that we'll be able to include your first choice. However, we'll work with you to find something you like and will enjoy playing on the gTar.

Can I integrate the gTar into an existing guitar?
The gTar is a completely redesigned solution that cannot be retrofitted onto a traditional guitar.  If you are a guitar manufacturer that is interested in integrating our technology into your designs, please contact us directly.

Jan 2017 - and  delayed production issues

https://www.facebook.com/fusionguitars/
Although the production line has been set up, there has been an unexpected delay releasing Fusion Guitars from the factory. This is due to new international laws (CITIES treaty) regarding the import and export of rosewood that came into effect on January 2nd 2017. This involves a worldwide tightening on the import and export of many species of rosewood which are now classified as endangered.
Our guitar fingerboards are sustainably grown plantation Indonesian rosewood, however this new legislation affects all international movement of guitars containing rosewood. We're working to meet all the legal and documentation requirements so that we can ship guitars soon.
In case you missed it last week, here's the backers update from our founder, Dave:
"Hi guys,
I just wanted to give you a quick update regarding the new CITIES Rosewood legislation. Peter the CEO and owner of the guitar company who manufacture our necks travelled to Guangzhou last week to meet CITIES representatives at their office.
The outcome of that meeting is that there will be a forum on Wednesday next week where the guitar company will be given details of the process and full instructions about how to apply for the required certification. Once the certification application has been submitted it will take approximately 20 days for CITIES to issue certification. Certification being issued is assuming that our application documentation is considered appropriate. Normally the application would take 1 week but Chinese New Year falls within this period.
We will update you on progress as we go and will give you an idea of our shipping schedule as soon as possible.
Thanks again for your patience, please understand we are doing everything we can to get this resolved.
Dave and the Fusion team."

When significant product changes occur where their final deliverable product no longer resembles the initial kickstarter concept, folks tend to get upset.
The Fusion Guitar is 6 inches longer and now has a headstock   = less compact than the original concept used during the kickstarter funding - then they said a delay occurred due to CITES Rosewood regulations
https://reverb.com/news/new-cites-regulations-for-all-rosewood-species

- when in fact the Fusion Guitar product was being redesigned for lower cost,  use with off the shelf Gotoh bridge and adding a Headstock and conventional tuners.
