Aren't there some decent spies around?

Elantric and I crossed in the mail.  Thanks for explaining, Steve!

Marc, your efforts on modifying your GR-55 to better suit your needs for live performance with wireless control remains right up there with Gumtown's GR-55 Editor as good examples of user to user shared knowledge. Any other company would embrace these projects  - yet each time I have tried to point out these accomplishments to Roland Corp or Boss US- by posting URL links to these efforts in their now discontinued "Post Comments" areas on their websites- they are summarily deleted within 48 hours, as if I was a troll posting SPAM.

Their loss ;)

yeah but i don't get it , that box only send midi right ?
so if i understood correctly , you could only send WIFI the guitar to midi info of the gr-55 , but not connect the guitar to the gr-55 through WIFI , right ?

mbenigni

Thanks so much for saying so, Steve.  I only wish more users had benefited from that effort.  Even I didn't use it as much as I expected before moving on to newer and shinier things.  While I hope to circle back and do more work with the GR55 in the future, I expect it will be old news to most people by then.

When there was some buzz, the very first thing everyone wanted to know was, "Is there a cheaper wired interface that I can use to run the TouchOSC editor."  And since I don't personally own a pile of interfaces to test, I could never provide much help.  Plus, there are a few caveats that prevent me encouraging people to invest an ML without reservation - primarily, the lack of bi-directional support, and secondarily, the difficulty in selecting PCM voices.

It was a fun journey, though.  Thanks to gumtown for his help tracking down all that SysEx!

The ML did not provide wireless connection from guitar to GR55.  (If someone could work that out, it would be amazing, and worth a great deal of money.)  It was used to provide WiFi connectivity from an iPad to the GR55, to allow for patch editing and real-time control of parameters.

Marc's Efforts are strictly for remote wireless GR-55 Control Surface - not for  Audio and  - Not for playing IOS synths.

Marc Benigni's GR-55 TouchOSC Navigator for iPad is a custom template for an IOS app called "Hexler TouchOSC"
https://itunes.apple.com/za/app/touchosc/id288120394?mt=8

Touch OSC transmits data wirelessly over Wi-FI as "OSC" (Open Sound Control) data messages.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Sound_Control

The Jabrudian Missing Link Wi-FI  OSC - MIDI converter translates "OSC" data messages into standard MIDI Sysex messages transmitted via its 5pin DIN MIDI OUT jack
http://wifimidi.com/

Marc mounted the Missing Link inside the GR-55 and connected the Missing Link MIDI Out to the GR-55's MIDI IN connection internally.

Voila! - GR-55 patch Editing using an Ipad mid song at the gig - and no wires needed.

i'm not interested in those functions , but i'm sure a lot of people would be , Roland should really hire you to develop that further , or at least buy your ideas for a lot of money !

QuoteI had the good opportunity to see Living Color as opening act for Joe Satriani. It was a great show and afterward I met Vernon Reid and we discussed his live rig and VG99. Vernon personally wanted me to thank Marc Benigni for his GR55 TouchOSC control template for iPad. And all the great advice and ideas he gets from reading all the posts here at VGuitarForums.

Marc - Thanks again for a Great job on thinking outside the box with your wireless GR-55 Control project , and sharing all your efforts with us!

Ha!  Well, I'd certainly love that job.  With Roland's resources we could do much better than a TouchOSC template.  But they won't be sending a check any time soon, as I've already given that work away for free.  :)

Steve, thanks yet again for all your kind words and support.  Hearing from Vernon Reid out of the blue was the single most exciting part of that journey!  When I got his email, I almost didn't respond, because I figured it was a friend pulling a practical joke, or an extremely well-targeted phishing attempt LOL.  Such an amazing player, and what a nice guy.

Replying to the dream features of the "VG-100":

For my taste I would love to have a COSM section with more far-out wave shaping possibilities, then an analog synth filter for every voice with envelope follower and ADSR...

Really astonished that none ever built this, it wouldn't be too complicated. All you need is a hex pickup, then some (even analog!) waveshaping and then directly into something like a 6voice Mopho (not using the oscillators). There would be no tracking issues at all.

Could be digital filters, too, to make it cheaper but analog just sounds nicer.

Find a used 1997 Roland VG-8 EX  those had the deepest COSM no latency HRM synth engine, and newer models (VG-88, VG-99) are actually dumbed down by comparison of the old VG-8

Read the VG-8 EX Owners manual  - see the HRM Synth on page 70-76

Since we are lamenting the lack of a new virtual guitar flagship model from Roland, I am curious as to what would totally excite this forum, in terms of features, form, etc., if Roland was listening, with the intention of releasing a new VG that would just blow us all away? What would the VG1000 be packing?

Oh dear.  We engaged in this speculation and dreaming some 3 years ago.  I'm exhausted on that subject.  I'm sincerely glad it's still alive...but like Elantric, I'm looking to other companies like Antares for the next round of really impressive guitar modeling and unique processing capabilities.  I'll look for another "flagship" level product from Roland in a year or three.

Myself - I'm no longer holding my breath for a "VG-100" - my gut tells me this will never materialize.

aliensporebomb

Maybe not.  But I have a feeling they'll do little experiments like the GP-10 with subsets of the big machines features.  It's getting to the point where CPU/DSP power is increasing so much sometimes the end user can kind of make the device do things it's not supposed to do.

Quote"I seriously do not expect the likes of a true "Roland VG-99 Replacement" to arrive from Roland until 2017  - at the earliest, , and even then it may not be as powerful with the same real time user controls and knobs  as the VG-99 had."

Make that 2020

vanceg

Yeah... they might get back around to having a full sized, full function flagship in the 13 pin realm again... maybe.
