Title: FTP - Show us your Triple Play Guitars
Post by: merman93 on April 20, 2013, 12:18:34 PM
New category needed for pics of FTP equipped guitars?

Here is my Ibanez RG 1550m with FTP installed.

Here is my FTP (at this hour!).
Its currently on a Godin xTSA - had to relocate the bridge PU to make more room for the FTP PU.

How to install Tripleplay on Godin xTSA
1) Unscrew all 4 mounting screws for the stock xTSA Bridge PU

2) Slide the stock xTSA Bridge PU 1/4" towards the Neck - to make room for the FTP PU.

3) Use clear Packing Tape and tape down the stock xTSA Bridge PU

4) Now that there is room, Mount the FTP PU and Controller.

ShawnB's Gibson SG with Tripleplay & GK-3

ShawnB has the most interesting install to date!

It also serves as a good visual reference for comparing the size of the FTP Controller vs the GK-3.

Also observe the small plastic piece ShawnB fabricated to mount the hex PU's on  - this type "plastic bit" may be required as a "Mounting Shim" on some guitars to create a flat surface to mount the FTP PU.
When the FTP PU straddles half way between your pickguard and half the Guitar's wood body, it may be too wobbly to be properly supported and stay in position.

I assume it can - use steel strings will help too

But dont complain that you still hear your standard tuned regular guitar strings when applying Alt Tunings to the FTP Synths ;)

thanks for the answer.
I would never complain about that ;)

I use gk3 and vg-99 with acoustic now and was wanting to do something similar, pads washes etc.

I have yet to hear from anyone who actually has installed ftp on steel string acoustic so was wanting to hear if anyone actually had before committing to buying one.

and sorry if this has turned into a bit of a thread hijack but it is sort of related :)

@uspirit....it should work, but the problem to overcome will probably be thr height of the pickup, fitting under the strings. It was for me.

A more detailed pic of the FTP Install on my Ibanez Prestige RG 1550,( left),  and my Ibanez Prestige RGA 121. Due to installation clearance issues, My luthier is fabricating a combo mount and bridge pickup surround for my Les Paul. When completed I will post pics.

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg51%2F1366%2Fimageejb.jpg&hash=3815647a89039a12beab604f904d8f1a1882442e)

I removed a GK 3 from the RGA 121 above, you can see the mount holes. Lots of mounting space on this one.

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg211%2F9411%2Fimageour.jpg&hash=4e0c2159a714fcb58f3ca0668e04eb4bf79526bb)

Actually just enough width clearance on the RG 1550 for the FTP. On both of these high end Ibanez guitars the bridge radius is not adjustable, it matches the fretboard radius of 430 mm. The action can raise or lower, but the radius is constant. When the hex mags are at the minimal distance from the D and G strings, the distance from both E strings is still well within tolerance, and raising the sensitivity slightly evens it all out, but an adjustable radius hex pickup, like the trusty GK 3, would be a welcome update on the next gen Triple Play.

BTW, My luthier shimmed the neck on a stock Strat at his shop to see how it felt, providing the clearance necessary for an FTP install on most Strats. It may not bother anybody else, but it didnt feel right for me, so I'm having the pickguard routed on my Andy Timmons Signature model for the FTP mount to install flush , providing the needed clearance without changing neck angle. This will work on most Strat type guitars with height clearance issues.

(hopefully I understand how to post pics here)

The stickiness of the pickup mounting pads was no match for my textured pickguard.  Luckily, one of the tune-o-matic brackets [barely] fit the posts of my VM Jag's bridge, and didn't require me to raise it, taboot.

Neither, actually.  They're vinyl clings sold as 'drink markers' that I found on clearance at Target.  I threw them on the guitar for the heck of it, but they've stayed in place just fine through a couple of gigs already.

Looks like Amazon sells 'em for less than $5:

DR has a Zebra Acoustic-Electric string.  I wonder how those would track and if the acoustic property would be negatively affected.

I have a Blue ZT3 and it is a great guitar! The Z-Trem is a thing of beauty! One of the best things about it is when you have it set up right and are using the bar when you let it go it falls into the lock position so that bends on strings are not as difficult to reach pitch. Also the balance it just right for me. Most people though...just can't get past it not having a head stock.  ::)

Yeah, I agree, an excellent axe. The only issue I've had is with the zero fret -- the high strings G, B, and E, have cut a small groove in it. Bending at the lower frets will jump the strings out of this groove with a "click".

Yes, zero fret guitars have this problem but can be solved with some light polishing on the edges of the groove. I do not do much bending down near the zero fret so I don't notice it much. Also no one else ever hears the little tick it makes so I just leave them alone.

One other thing that I had told to me about Steinberger basses, I let a friend of mine play one of my basses and his complaint was it was balanced and that it bothered him not having to hold the bass neck up. In other words he liked his bass being neck heavy and it bothered him that it was balanced and he didn't have to hold on to it or it would take a dive for his knees.  :o

... digressing a bit here, but this zero-fret nut I made a few years ago works quite well -- It sits very close to the fret and the grooves fit the strings snugly.

Spider, I'm planning to mount two hex PUs (GK3-Internal Kit + FTP on a Steinberger ZT-3) very close to each other as you have done on your Schecter.
Have you had any issues with magnetic interference, and also, why did you opt for the GK3 furthest from the bridge?

My Godin Freeway SA.

Works great. I had to use the second thinner PU adapter (I mean NOT the thinnest). The distance bridge-pickup on the guitar is 1 cm, so no problem for the FTP PU.

Using a Kenton MIDI USB host, last night I connected the guitar to a Roland SonicCell. Ad first glance, no problem. Probably there's the need for recalibrating the sensibility of the FTP PU.

Anyway, almost perfect, I'm very satisfied.

Very interesting Thread.

Alfstone, lovely rig... That is exactly what I am planning to do with a LGXT, using a tripleplay to go to the GR33 or an external roland sound module....

I have a simple question... Do you use a VG unit as well? If so, d o you feel that the piezo does not provide a sound as nice as the GK pickup used in a VG unit?

Hope this questions makes sense

Tonato, thanks. Yes, I have a VG-99, but I can't give you a comparison just because I haven't any GK PU-mounting guitar...anyway, if using the correct setup, both my (piezo equipped) Godin ACS-SA and Godin Freeway sound rather good.

Hi Guys! Having a Godin LGXT and an FTP I've found quite tricky to mount the FTP hex pickup due to the lack of space. I did it but it is not entirely in contact with the guitar, which annoys me a bit.

I am going to buy a pickup ring to modify it (cut the bottom edge) so the FTP pickup has more space....

But, when I was gonna buy it, I came across with different models, "Slanted, Flat underside" and "non slanted, flat underside". For my common sense, I was gonna buy the non slanted, flat underside. But I m not entirely sure and don't wanna waste £10 on them.

Here is the webpage... Do you think is the n 11? "Pickup surrounds for hum bucker not slanted flat underside plastic"

MANY THANKS!!!

Edit: By the way, here is a pic of my beloved LGXT :)

Riff Anvil custom synth guitar.  High quality woods 40 yo or older .  5pc neck through.  Ebony fretboard SANS INLAY.

Custom dual humbucker w super switch.  Graphtec ghost saddles, custom thickness hipshot bridge, Graphtec hexpander and acoustiphonic.  And at least temporarily the FTP.

Got a duplicate photo in my last post.  Here is a closeup.  This guitar is about 6 years old.  Lots of gig time.  Nitrocellulose laq (about 12 coats woth 2000 grit wet sand between coats) isnt as durable as poly but sounds better imho.

Here's mine. The 3 Knobs are dual duty. When a 1/4" cable is plugged in it's the 1950's, when GK cable is plugged in it's the future: GK Vol, GK SW1 and 2. The pickup selector doesn't do anything on the digital side

My FTP is on my pedalboard, split off from my Boss GP-10.

So basically I have 3 modes:
Dot into tube amp
GK guitar into GP-10
GK guitar into GP-10 PLUS MainStage using FTP.

In the last case I still bring in MIDI from GP-10, but just for the treadle, which becomes mod wheel, and the sustain pedal (saves real estate).

It was harder than a bolt-on setup to hack it all together, but it's much easier to use IMHO. I can just barely cope with my very minimal controls without getting out of the music and into my head. I don't understand how people cope with guitar with 10+ controls.

Then again organists seem to handle their giant console from a 1950's spaceship LOL

There's a fair bit of detail about putting your FTP on your pedal board in this thread and MusicOverGear spends a fair bit of time discussing his setup starting at post #53.

Looks good on my Yamaha EG112C2. I used the #2 mount. The Livid Guitar Wing fits perfectly as well. Picked it up at a garage sale for twenty dollars a few years ago (it needed some TLC) and used it as a wood shed guitar. Now I feel like I need to start upgrading her.

It is nice to have a list of guitars that the FTP fits on without or without modification, and what mount pad(s) were used. For instance, I've heard the PRS Custom SE mentioned but it looks like it might be a tight fit to me. Has anyone here done that install?

I was hoping/thinking those with tight circumstances (typically strat style guitars) would explain how they fit the TP in. Looks like one person un-screwed their bridge pick-up and taped the bezel....

Just wanted to point out the FTP PU does fit on Godin LGX-SA / LGXT

Here is "DF400" 's Godin LGXT

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.snapagogo.com%2Fuploads%2Fsource%2F62016%2F1452205206_141859915_IMG_0453.jpg&hash=e21d3c9d277d23bb822533955afb1d4b18f24223)

Many folks claim Tripleplay PU  will not fit or will "wobble" due to the carved top wood on the Godin LGX-SA / LGXT - thinking its curved like a Gibson Les Paul Standard

but if you examine the Godin LGX-SA / LGXT top near the bridge  - you will discover this area on the wood top is relatively flat and stable for FTP PU mounting

where you can click on and watch the videos I've posted of my EDM music (in the MIDI guitar section of the page). I find a lot of EDM to be a fascinating blend of textures and sounds that have so much potention for evolution and development. I'm especially interested in blending Jazz and Fusion styles into the art form. Central to EDM is the use of Controllers. Mostly this is done by DJs who control the performances of their mixes by interacting with these devices. Controllers come in many shapes and sizes and predominately sit on a table or surface of some kind. I'm trying to do the same sorts of things but by using controllers that are connected to the guitar. Two examples are above. The Robocaster (upper right picture), designed by Ben Lewery (visionaryinstruments.com)
http://www.burrjohnson.com/visionaryinstruments.com
is a fantastic way to get this done. He and I have a new build coming soon which will easilly be the best option for this sort of thing. The Guitar Wing (upper left picture) is more of a consumer level piece that mounts on the guitar. A super great starter product for exploring this new a exciting music direction. Check out (Click here) Control Freak 5 to see what I've been up to.

Ok, here's another take.
It's a American Special 2013 I put the Dremel into and added the GK-3 KIT.
- Added locking tuners
- Added Mag-Lok to the tremolo.
- Added Kill switch on the volume
- Replaced Humbucker with Seymour Duncan JB and Seymour Duncan Little' 59, middle pup is still the original Texas special.
- Added push-pull for single coil switching of the two humbuckers.
- Added $200 for PLEK'ing the the frets (i.e. hard core laser treatment)
- Added Fishman Triple Play (FTP)

Great? ----- Yes!!!

Got a FTP coming in tomorrow, going to mount it on my LGX-T for a test drive- big test will be to see how to proceed with my next guitar project, which is as of now intended feature an ATG luthier kit plus FTP and an Evertune bridge.  Given the impedance loading experience so far on my splitting a single hex pickup on my Electra guitar for both ATG and GK-3, I'm considering mounting 2 hex pickups and was wondering which one should go closer to the bridge.  Seems everybody here feels comfortable mounting the FTP hex farther from the bridge, I'll take that as a baseline and welcome any experiences shared.

Is there general agreement that in a dual hex situation like this it is better (less critical) to have the FTP pickup farther from the bridge?

Since Muse's Matt Bellamy strapped a Kaoss Pad onto his Manson electrics, we've seen a fair few technologically enhanced guitars, but none quite as advanced as this incredible arcade-style electric.

Dubbed Sputnik by its builders Remy Sefi and David Or, the guitar boasts seven arcade-esque Bluetooth MIDI buttons, two MIDI knobs, MIDI motion control, a Fishman TriplePlay MIDI pickup and a Realtime Pixel Styled Audio Visualizer - meaning it can control just about anything you can throw at it.

In the video above, Sefi demonstrates its phenomenal array of features with a song made completely using the guitar.

Sputnik started life as an Ibanez Artcore AS53, and runs on several Arduino micro-controllers placed inside the body - hurray for f-holes!

Just added a Fishman Tripleplay Connect to my Roland GK Starcaster.

Looks great but note the GK output may be magnetically impaired when mounted directly to the FTP. Not saying it always happen but I got issues with my Strat. GK sounded much better and gave higher output with FTP removed.

Some of those have a built in 1:1.1 passive transformer that lowers impedance and boosts the signal - its in the electronics cavity .

The concept was 1st employed by Lindsay Buckingham using inline AKG cable transformers

Quote from: Bluesbird on August 13, 2023, 05:35:00 PMYes it does. It's activated when you pull the tone pot. It gives it a boost, but does indeed lower the impedance making for a dark tone. I don't find I use it much as I prefer a brighter sound. I didn't know that about Buckingham—I'll have to look up more info about that. Thanks for the info.

The tone gets darker as the transformer input is 50k ohm - which presents a high freq roll off , but it does provide a battery free signal boost when activated

Push tone pot in and its true bypass without the transformer

I buried the dongle of my FTP Connect under the pickguard on this MIM Telecaster:

I used a Neutrik USB A to B bulkhead that I inserted into the butt end. The crimped terminals on the pickup connector are reversed to accommodate the reversed pickup mounting.

It works well connected to my iPad through AUM, controlling Auv3 synths. I like the FTP.
