Hi Guys,
Only two days I bought a GK-3 pickup with the sole intention of playing MIDI notes into Logic Pro, as I am no good on keyboards. How do I do this without having to try and source out of production gear like the GI-10 / GI-20, or the also discontinued Axon interfaces, or the really expensive McMillen interface or still quite expensive VG series interfaces? - I am NOT looking for the sounds these machines have inside them....Is there not something the size of a cigarette box that you can plug the 13 pin cable into and has a USB out? That way it goes straight into Logic? Please advise I am a total noob at VG stuff.

Welcome to the group burrencrawler!  :)

I am sorry to inform you that a GK pickup does not output MIDI. The device you plug it into (VG-99 or GR-55) does the conversion of pitch to MIDI.

Could get a used GR-30 - under $300 on Ebay - to make use of the GK-3

or for $199 a Gen II You Rock Guitar triggers MIDI very fast

or for $52 a Madcatz Fender Mustang MIDI on Amazon

For pure midi try Jam Origin's Midi Guitar software and/or wait for the Fishman Triple Play.

You need a minimum of the GI-20 for midi out.
Also check out the GR-20, they are reasonable cheap too.

This is great info. Thanks guys. I am totally new to all this, had no idea you needed something before the DAW.  :-[

I would like to highly recommend the Roland GI-10. If you have a PC with a game port, you can get a MIDI to game port cable for almost nothing. The GI-10 will take GK-3 to MIDI, then the MIDI to game port cable does the rest.

They are around... I picked up one off Oz eBay for under 100 bucks including shipping AND a ('nother!!) GK2A    ;D
Read slower!!!   ....I'm typing as fast as I can...

does not exist

a gently used GI-20 gets you Gk 13 to 5 pin MIDI

or a gently used GP-10 also gets you separate strings per track for wider sonic exploration in a computer

Used VG-99?   It's bigger than you want.

With GK Sens at 22 and going MIDI over USB I find it triggers softsynths better than anything.  For me anyway.
I've still yet to get G-T-M going on my SY-1000 so I may change my mind.

Cheapest GK internal would be GP-10 nice and small but still bigger than you want but does separate strings per track which is useful.
I've been advised it does do guitar-to-midi better than the VG does but have yet to really try it.

GK Devices:  Roland VG-99, Boss GP-10, Boss SY-1000.

The GP-10 does Guitar to MIDI slightly better than VG-99

But only via USB -as Roland/Boss was sleeping the day they developed the product spec -omiting a MIDI OUT JACK

I agree at this point today, the GP-10 will be the best "bang for your bucks", with guitar to midi (over USB), and hexaphonic audio out.
Plus the bonus of built in guitar/synth and amp modeling, and effects too.

And still relevant (as bulk of our forum is as many are just now looking at hex PU 13 pin systems

As Guitarpolson has sugested, you could try the software Jam Origin MIDI Guitar 2

https://www.jamorigin.com/

There is an evaluation version with limited capabilities that you can download for free.

It works with the normal pickups, it is polyphonic, and it tracks very well. You may be surprised with the results.

Today a used Boss GP-10 provides the smallest/lowest cost GK 13 Input  8in/8out 24bit USB AUDIO ( one channel per string)  and Guitar to MIDI over USB into Logic Pro
