Title: Deckard's Blues - Vangelis style VG99 synth pad and lead "all in one"
Post by: Smash on April 27, 2015, 07:47:03 AM
Is it possible? Can a VG99 really sound like Vangellis? Read on...

This patch uses a lot of the ideas from my Escapism patch – COSM A provides the synth pad and COSM B the lead (and also Rhodes sound – more on that later).
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=14640.msg105643#msg105643 (https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=14640.msg105643#msg105643)

The name of the patch should give a pretty clear indication of the inspiration for the patch!

The pad is GR300 tuned in a sort of drop D but a tone and a half down, the lead is an octave up from this without the drop D. the tuning was purely so I could use the true key of A but match Vangelis Blade Runner's Blues.

So again we use the freeze feature for the pad and again automation of individual string panning and levels give that bit of movement that makes it sound a bit more believable as a pad. But also this time we have an automated VCF sweep to give that classic analogue synth sound.

The lead on COSM B may sound like the GR300 but is the HRM engine wave model. I've used poly slow gear to match the original inspiration lead sound but you can turn it off using CTL2 on the FC300 for faster lines and you'll see I do that in the video.

CTL1 switches from lead to a type of Rhodes sound – I'll be honest I only programmed that because of the bit in the original track and I only used it once! Ridiculous!!! It switches the COSM model, turns off the FXB EQ and overdrive and poly slow gear, and kicks in a phaser.
EXP1 does the freezing of COSM A and controls the volumes of both A & B

EXP2 is the whammy pedal again which takes the lead into, quite literally, Dolphin territory!

I loosely follow the inspiration track to start with then go my own way – it's all busked tbh. You can literally see me thinking at some point, lol! Just wanted to get it down quick and dirty. And just for good measure Lenny the Bull Terrier decides to give the FC300 the once over near the end!

Super nice. The way you play it it sounds like Deckard has figured a few things out

I think it's probably the original studio enforced "happy" ending of the film, lol!

After you posted the Escapism patch I spent quite some time in the editor looking at how you managed to come up with functionality like that, I learned a lot. To me, playing the patch is a lot like driving a sports car: too much this way or not enough that way and your'e in the toolies but once you get it you're in for an amazing ride.

This patch adds another dimension, I can't wait to kick my shoes off and try it.

Thanx man. Keep your eyes on EXP 1 switch light - the light comes on to show when freeze has 'grabbed' the chord. This was deliberate for live use so you know when you can mute the strings ready to use the lead which comes in in the last quarter of travel. There is a safe zone between freeze grabbing and the lead volume coming up so you should be to make smooth chord ramps.

Sorry the assigns are in a bit of a random order, lol!

Super cool, Smash!   Years after the 99 is discontinued, you continue to make it look like the newest cool thing frm this year's trade show this year that we all can't wait to get our hands on. If I bought a 2015 model guitar synth, I hope it could make sounds like that. :)

Man, that is one helluva compliment - thank you sir - but major props to all the core of people here who've pushed, and still push, the boundaries of the VG99 in ways I would never even think of.

And yes, if I'm honest the SY-300 was a large driver for doing the patch, felt a bit like the glove being laid down in challenge like that black 55 Chevy vs Milners piss yellow Deuce! Can the old girl still hack it? Of course - she can....and with a little more style too!

It may be down to 10ths of a second these days but I'll still claim the win...

No other one box solution could do this  ;)

Someday, I really need to dissect the synth patches that you and others have made for the VG-99 and figure out how to program that side of it.  I can usually create the synth sounds I want with relative ease on the GR-55 and GP-10, as the concepts are familiar to me from various other sampling and subtractive synths.  But the VG-99 is a completely different animal with its HRM synths.  Like algebra vs. calculus or something.  Obviously it's very capable but programming synth sounds on it is a big paradigm shift for me. :)

I'm so glad there are still some folks here who are still breaking new ground with the 99 and making it do things that probably even Roland never thought possible, and posting patches to enjoy and learn from! Viva la VG-99!

This is an awesome patch but the weird thing I notice is it almost overdrives the signal with the pad part sometimes.  I can't quite figure it out.  More later...still working with it.

Look at the bass on all the pad EQs  - I was trying to beef up the bottom end of the pad as much as possible so if you don't have a lot of headroom it may be that?

Also I had two versions of the patch on the go and it looks like I uploaded the wrong one!!

there is at least one difference - there was top end filtering kicking in with the whammy that shouldn't have been and god knows what else - sorry about that  :-\

This is defo the one as played.

I'll try that one but....I'm having a ton of fun looping with this one.  Or just to get the feel of the patch playing it.  Fun!

Thanks for the patch update!

got to say that I am still having a lot of fun with this patch feeding it into the Sy 300.

I quoted this part of the thread because something was revealed in the internet chatter that I hadn't considered before, that being that Deckard was most likely also a replicant.
