I see a lot of posts about alternate cables for the RCC2 cable but nobody has mentioned the fact
that while a standard Ethernet cable will work, the RCC2 cable provides phantom power to the FC-300
and an standard ethernet cable does not...  :(
I got to my gig 1 hour from the house only to find that out!
Luckily a friend had a Roland Power Supply that worked! WHEW!!  :P

So, if you plan to use a standard ethernet cable you need to make sure you have a power supply for the FC-300.

Here is my question:
These ethercon cables that were recommended in another post..
Will they work out of the box or do they HAVE to be modified to work between a VG-99 and an FC-300?

Please advise!!

Thanks!!

might check your FC-300 -

the RRC-2 info used to be online at the VG-99 downloads page

we have copies here:

Quote1. I found a Neutrik Ethercon shell for a few dollars on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Neutrik-NE8MC-Ethercon-Cable-Connector/dp/B002BEUHUQ/ref=pd_bxgy_MI_text_z

Is this all I need (with a good CAT6 cable) to create my own RRC2?

Correct - and access to an RJ-45 Crimping tool  (See RRC2 details below)

Quote2. Will the FC-300 be powered via the CAT 6 cable?

When attached to a VG-99 / VB-99 with the RRC2 RJ-45 cable - yes

Quote3. I'm mostly using the VG-99 in my studio. Do I really need to bother with the Neutrik connector?

Use the Neutrik Ethercon plug connection at the FC300 side,  It will save the fragile internal FC200 PC Board just in case someone stands on the RJ-45 cable entry to the FC300

The recent Line6 VDI Ethercon cables  do not tangle  can work with VG-99 / FC-300 - AFTER you swap out one end for a standard RJ-45 crimp jack.

Looks like they use VanDamme 268-450-000 TourCat CAT 5E STP Flexible cable

FC-300 Q & A FAQ (Translated from Roland Japan)

Q. FC-300 cable RRC2 looks like RJ45 plug is used, but what is the highly reliable special plug?

A. Yes, RJ45 plug, high reliability Neutrik made EtherCon type plug is used at the FC-300 RRC2 Input.
EtherCon plug and XLR plug both latch when using, Ethercon provides same type connection as RJ45.

Q. Can any MIDI Program change command be assigned to pedals of the FC-300?

A. Patch mode allows a number pedal to be assigned any value of MIDI program change command.

Q. Can the FC-300 pedal transmit MIDI note on/ off output information?

A. Patch mode allows a number of FC-300 and CTL1 pedal, pedal-2 notes any information can be stored.
Also, more than one pedal notes can be stored as a single pedal to operate only in code (chord) can be printed out.

Q. RRC2 cable can be built to custom length, please tell me specs.

A. A Custom RRC2 cable must have the following specifications please.

* At least five categories (Cat5)
* Less than 15 meters in total length
* RJ45 to Ethercon - Wired Straight cable, not "crossover type".

Q. FC-300 can be connected to cable and what equipment uses RRC2 interface?
A. Guitar VG-99 and V-RRC2 cable, FC-300 becomes VG-99 foot controller.

The RRC2 Ethercon pinout is
========================
1 = RCV_1
2 = RCV_2
3 = +5VDC
4 = +VREF
5 = +VREF
6 = TXD
7 = GND
8 = GND
SHELL = GND

Hmmmm...
I wonder if the cable I am using has a problem then.....

Are you guys using the Roland cable or a generic ethernet cable?
I actually have two VG-99 setups. The one with the "original" cable does receive phantom power.
The other one was "used" (and beat up a bit).
It was missing the Roland cable so I just grabbed a regular ethernet cable.
Did not supply the phantom power but worked when I used a wall wart power supply..

I will try a different cable to check..

Thanks for letting me know that. saved me a little $$.

Many RJ-45 to RJ-45  CAT-5 Ethernet cables are "Cross-over cables"  - these have all 8 pins reversed, to allow two computers to connect to each other without need of a "Ethernet Switch" box.

This is the big reason both Line-6 and Roland state in the instructions and FAQ knowledge base to Never use an RJ-45 to RJ-45 Ethernet cable as a substitute for their official "VDI" or "RRC2" custom cables.

If you accidentally use a Ethernet "Cross-over cable'" to connect your FC-300 to your VG-99 , you will smoke internal components related to the power feed on the RRC2 circuit inside the VG-99

and then you will never be able to power your FC-300 when using a proper RRC2 Ethercon to RJ-45 cable

this is all detailed clearly here:

As stated above, DO NOT use a crossover cable.

How to tell the difference between standard ethernet lan cable and crossover type:
https://www.techwalla.com/articles/how-to-identify-a-crossover-cable

I test for crossover cables with one of these
