VG-8 - favorite patch tweaks?

Now that I've finally got things working, I'm happily stuck in the early phases of the romance, & exploring what the VG-8 has to offer "from the box" -- AC30Duet still amuses me -- but I'm still catching up on old posts (here & elsewhere).

A statement that recurs often is to the effect of "get under the hood, modify the factory patches," but there aren't so many mentions of actual modifications.

In your experience, what is one favorite "upgrade" that lifts a so-so & dirt-common patch up to something remarkable? (I'm including the VG8D cards in the list.)

Tony - have you run through the back catalogue of VG8 patches available here ?  there are some really great sounds available and this is probably a better starting position than the factory patches for creating some of your own magic.

(Oops -- apologies for overlooking your reply!)

Yeah, I have considered that... excepting that I haven't touched even rudimentary MIDI in a decade, my old MOTU box has gone missing, & the closest thing I've got on the shelf that might do the trick is a sweet old MC-500. That is to say, I'm still quite pleased just skimming the surface, but gearing up to actually begin pushing some buttons. :o

Not that I've been totally slack: the banks hereabouts have been duly downloaded & are safe on my virtual desktop.

You only need a cheap 5 pin midi to USB converter to be able to up/ download the patches you can get them on eBay for about £5. $10
I have been using one for a while with no problems

Avoid this type and it's blue variant for anything more than patch changes or midi note sending.

They just don't work at transferring patch data and upload patches.
A known brand name device is best for that.

Agreed!

There is much "dis-information" on the web regarding this make. model Chinese USB MIDI cable

Here is a teardown internal view

Looks like the one I'm using - only use it for patch data on the vg8 though and the data is very small - not had any issues or glitch img with it - did use it for a firmware update on a TC Nova system too no issues - if I was going to use it as part of a rig I would however switch to a better quality one
