iOS 8 CAUSING ONSONG TO FREEZE AND CLOSE RANDOMLY
All of us at OnSong have been working around the clock to handle a number of issues that users have reported over the past few weeks.  It's becoming clear now that all of these issues are caused by bugs in iOS 8.  These bugs appear to have been caused by compiling OnSong under the iOS 8.2 SDK and effect all versions of iOS 8.

We have submitted numerous bug reports to Apple regarding these issues. Despite requesting a status on these issues over the last few weeks, we have not had any firm assurances that they will be corrected in iOS 8.3.  We are working to resolve these issues on our own in the hopes to produce a performant version of OnSong for our users.

There are a growing number of websites and forums that detail these issues.

This webpage describes the most common problems that you may be experiencing in iOS 8 with regards to battery usage, Bluetooth connectivity and WiFi problems.
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/03/11/9-common-ios-8-2-problems-how-to-fix-them/

Because you trust us for answers, OnSong is continuing to invest in hardware and staff resources to try to troubleshoot and find solutions. The following is a synopsis of unresolved bugs to keep you informed:

Random Crash After Waking The Screen
So far, OnSong 1.995 crashes due to programming errors have been quite low. However iOS 8 is shutting down OnSong due to memory pressure.   This happens when so much memory is being used that other core services are in jeopardy. It's like being on a life boat that is sinking and picking the biggest person to take a swim.  However this memory bloat is not caused by OnSong. We have isolated this to GameKit, an Apple framework that OnSong uses to power the original OnCue and which is enabled by default in OnSong 1.995.

Let's say you have OnSong up and running and turn off your screen and then turn it back on. During that time, iOS pushes OnSong into the background and then brings it back to the foreground and active.  That process alone causes GameKit to begin to consume working memory very quickly and uncontrollably at a rate of about 10 MB per second.  Just having a GameKit session created for transmitting data over Bluetooth will cause this erratic behavior.

GameKit was deprecated in iOS 7, but OnSong continues to use it to support our original iPad users.  Until Apple can correct this, we are submitting a version of OnSong that defaults to the new version of OnCue on iOS 7 and higher. While the new Multipeer Connectivity framework is also buggy (see here and here), we need to use this until Apple can correct the issues with GameKit.

To prevent OnSong from crashing due to memory pressure, go into the Utilities menu (gear icon), choose Settings, and then Menu Settings, Sharing, OnCue Version and set that to "New".  We also strongly urge you to use OnSong Connect instead since it is not bound by Apple's frameworks and can support many devices and applications over standard WiFi communication protocols.

Freezes and Crashes After Waking The Screen
While we first thought that all reported crashes were related, we were able to pinpoint another crash caused by iOS 8.2.  In this case, sleeping the screen and turning it back on will cause OnSong to "hang".  This is caused by the AirTurn framework, used for foot pedal connectivity, asking iOS for a list of Bluetooth devices.  After resuming from the background, this request "stalls" for an unknown reason which is what causes OnSong to freeze.  If an app freezes when resuming for too long, iOS 8 then closes the app.

So yes, you've read that correctly.  iOS 8 is hanging on a simple request for Bluetooth devices which freezes OnSong which in turn results in iOS 8 shutting down the app.

We've contacted AirTurn about this issue and they have reported this as a bug to Apple. We have sent crash logs and other information to AirTurn and Apple to resolve this issue. AirTurn is in agreement that there are serious issues in the iOS 8.2 Bluetooth functionality.

Further tests show that this issue has been resolved in iOS 8.3 which is currently in beta. We have also found some Bluetooth performance improvements by going into the Settings app, choosing General, Reset and tapping on "Reset Network Settings". While this will remove all network passwords, and require you to pair with Bluetooth devices again, it has seemed to help improve Bluetooth performance.

Hard "Kernel Panic" Crash When Using Stage Monitor on Lightning Video Adapters
We have reported this particular issue to Apple late last year and have not yet found resolution.  We have made several videos documenting this and have proven that it happens only on iOS 8 devices when using a Lightning port video adapter, although we have begun to hear reports about users also experiencing this when streaming to an AppleTV with AirPlay under iOS 8.2.

Apple has responded to this bug and have reported that they could replicate the choppy animations, but were not able to replicate a crash.  We then sent another video with the latest version of iOS 8.3 beta with a fresh version of OnSong and were able to cause a crash within a minute.  We have not yet heard back from Apple whether this would be fixed in iOS 8.3 or regarding a workaround we could implement to prevent a crash.

Network Connectivity Issues
We have also been fielding a number of questions regarding WiFi networking performance within OnSong. We have run through a battery of tests with a number of routers and have determined that these issues reside in a particularly nasty class of iOS 8 bugs called WiFried. The general gist is that some operations using WiFi on iOS 8 cause severe network degradation. In fact, just uploading a large file to Dropbox from within OnSong or the Dropbox Storage Provider will cause Internet access for other devices on the same network to fail.

We've been in conversation with Dropbox regarding this issue, but have found that other services exhibit the same behavior under iOS 8. Earlier versions of iOS do not exhibit this behavior. Dropbox believes this is an issue with the iOS 8 networking stack and we are trying to determine ways to work around this issue.

The Solution
We are currently in a holding pattern until Apple can fix these issues permanently.  In the meantime, we are finalizing a new version of OnSong to temporarily work around these problems so that their impact is not as widely felt.  We will also continue to work with Apple to hopefully resolve these serious issues in iOS 8.3 since that appears to be the only way to find meaningful resolution.

What You Can Do
The first thing to remember is that apps automatically update in iOS unless you disable automatic app updates. Since OnSong is constantly being improved, we recommend that you turn off automatic app updates so you can control when to review and implement new features.

You can also help by making these issues heard by contacting Apple. We have a relatively small voice and Apple tends to move faster when it effect more users.  By making your voice heard, we hope to find resolution on these issues faster.

In the past we were able to sufficiently test OnSong with new iOS updates since there we not too many major changes with each release and they were relatively free of bugs that affected apps.  iOS 8 has had a much more aggressive timetable and we feel that the need to support more devices, including the Apple Watch, has resulted in an untested platform. Many of these issues have been serious with wider implications than previous versions and we have been spending an inordinate amount of time testing, documenting and reporting to Apple instead of focusing on our app.  We think Apple can and should be doing a better job of releasing stable platforms.

We recommend that if you are using OnSong in a live scenario that you do not update your version of iOS until you have time to practice and implement it in your performance. OnSong will do a better job of communicating issues that are found with iOS and try to head off any serious issues in the future. We also apologize for the delay in sending this message as we needed time to determine where the issues lie and how they can be addressed.

Conclusion
We don't want this message to sound like we are "passing the buck".  We have made mistakes in the last few builds and we take responsibility for those. Reviewing our release notes (1.993, 1.994, 1.995 and the upcoming 1.996)

http://onsongapp.com/releases/1.996/

should indicate our commitment to fixing any and all reported issues quickly, even if many are caused by changes in iOS  In this case we believe we needed to communicate that we are stuck until Apple moves to correct serious issues that are affecting all of us.

Thank you again for choosing OnSong. We look forward to continuing to serve you and to make the best app for musicians possible.

iOS 9 is Coming Soon. Be Prepared!

Apple is set to launch iOS 9 within the next few days and we at OnSong want to make sure you are prepared.  It can be unsettling to wonder "should I upgrade or not?"  To help reduce that anxiety, we want to let you know our plan and offer a few tips when considering an iOS upgrade.
If It Ain't Broke... Throughout this past year we've worked to update OnSong to workaround iOS 8 issues as Apple has released new versions. Please be aware that operating system upgrades can cause issues in the many apps you use.  Confirm that all of your critical apps are working as expected before making the leap.

Be prepared.  While you should never experience data loss when upgrading iOS or OnSong, there is always the potential for an unexpected problem.  We recommend that you always keep a backup of your OnSong Library and iOS device before you upgrade.

Allow plenty of time.  Never install an iOS upgrade or OnSong update prior to a show. Give yourself plenty of time to use the software and learn about new or changed features. OnSong provides full release notes and documentation to get up to speed.  This also gives us plenty of time to answer your questions or help to get you up and running. Be sure to disable automatic updates so you have control when updates get installed.

Be patient.  OnSong 1.999 will launch later in September after iOS 9 is released.
This is intended to address any last minute problems that might appear in the final version.

Follow us.  Facebook and Twitter are great ways for us to keep in touch. We will let you know important information about iOS 9, OnSong and other apps so you can make an informed decision on the best time to push the button.
While our team has been testing OnSong 1.999 on the beta versions of iOS 9 for the past few months, we can always use your help to ensure a seamless transition.  If you have a device you don't use in a live scenario, you can install and preview the iOS 9 beta today.
You can also join the OnSong beta team to help us make OnSong awesome.

iPad 1 and iOS 5.1.1

When the original iPad debuted in early 2010, it prompted us to ask, "could this replace paper and the binder?"  It inspired us to quit our day jobs and get busy.

More than five years later, that question has been answered with a definitive "yes". Nothing excites us more than what this humble device has achieved.

We've continued to support our original iPad users with new updates, bringing as much functionality as we could with each new build.  Unfortunately, OnSong 1.999 will be the last version with support for iOS 5.1.1 and the original iPad.

The reason is simple: It's no longer supported by Apple.
The development tools we use to make OnSong can no longer build to iPad 1 devices.
This makes it impossible to maintain a quality product while also providing support for t
he majority of our users and advancements in mobile technology.

The good news is that you'll still be able to use OnSong 1.999 when it is released and continue to download it from the App Store.  We will provide cross-version interoperability as long as we can.

Plan to upgrade to a newer device so we can provide you with future versions of OnSong and maintain support of many other apps that you use. With new models of iPads on the horizon,
now is a great time to buy.

OnSong 1.999 Coming Soon!

We are working hard to make OnSong 1.999 the best release ever.  We've worked hard on stability and compatibility
with iOS 9 and have added some great new features like:
Spotify Integration for backing tracks
Updated playback and countdown displays
Bluetooth over MIDI support
Section assignments that work with Flow
Export and import chord diagrams
...and much more!
This will be our last release for a while so we are giving it our best.
We have a lot of things in store for OnSong 2.0 so we thank you for
your patience as we build the next generation of live music performance tools.

RELEASE NOTES
OnSong 1.9994 was released on March 28, 2016. This release fixing the following issues:
ADDED
Added the ability to set an action to switch to a specific song.
Added the ability to change the icon of songs by tapping on the icon in the songs and sets list. Icons are cycled as you tap.
Added a backup restoration progress screen instead of locking the user interface with no information.
Added the ability to toggle the input assistant bar when using the song editor in the song editor setting screen.
Added the ability for OnSong to prompt for updating or duplicating when beaming a set via OnCue or OnSong Connect.
Added the ability to tap in the menubar to hide the on-screen keyboard when editing sticky notes on the iPhone.
Added the ability to set up OnSong as a virtual MIDI destination.
Added the ability for OnSong to display if a MIDI connection is virtual.
Added the ability for the MIDI sources and destinations to update automatically when devices are plugged and unplugged.
Added a blur to the status bar so it matches the menubar.
CHANGES
Changed existing settings to disable timestamped backup files if automatic backup is enabled.
Changed the Apply Styles screen to apply the numbering system if selected.
Changed the default behavior of the keyboard in the song editor to include the input assistance bar.
Changed the way the automatic backup feature works with the timestamp. Turning on the automatic backup will automatically turn off the timestamp with no prompt. If they try to turn it on again, then it will prompt.
Changed the ArtNet DMX manager to reconnect when the app becomes active to allow changes in network to resolve.
Changed the label for MIDI chord playback to "Chord Playback".
FIXES
Fixed an issue where automatic backup files would consume too much storage space.
Fixed a crash condition when using the drawing tool on iOS 8 and earlier.
Fixed a crash condition when opening the Print Preview screen on iOS 5 and 6 due to how printing of annotations was implemented with newer framework methods.
Fixed a crash when attempting to open the Background Media Library from the Editors menu on iOS 5. Background media management is not supported on iOS 5.
Fixed an issue with the menubar overlapping the song content when rotating the screen.
Fixed an issue with the Rewrite Into Key process that wouldn't declare the key properly.
Fixed an issue where printing or exporting PDF files containing drawings would cause the first page of the printout to be blank aside from annotations.
Fixed layout issues with the date picker in the set editor that are caused by Apple fixing layout of that component in newer versions of iOS 9 which had been worked around.
Fixed an issue where OnSong fails to create or find a library.
Fixed an issue where inter-app audio was disabled in the build settings.
Fixed an issue with audio cutting out when the metronome is enabled.
Fixed a crash condition with the PageFlip FireFly on iOS 6.
Fixed an issue with custom-colored lyrics overlays not resizing.
Fixed a layout issue on the AirTurn Digit configure screen.
Fixed an issue where the Remove Capo output option had no effect on emailed documents.
Fixed an issue where tutorial videos would not play for configuring the AirTurn DUO and Digit II.
Fixed an issue when synchronizing transposed SongSelect songs which caused the transposed files to be imported creating duplicates.
Fixed an issue when transposing back into the standard key where the transposed root is not retained.
Fixed an issue with background operations with MIDI clock.
Fixed an issue with the naming of external MIDI devices.
Fixed an issue where the MIDI clock adjustment would not output correctly for 100%.
Fixed an issue with the MIDI driver being initialized twice.
Fixed an issue where the Chord Builder opens automatically on the iPhone and prevents editing.
Fixed an issue where deleting a song in the songs menu will scroll to the default song at the bottom.
Fixed an issue that would cause the ArtNet DMX manager to lose connection if a network has been changed.
Fixed an issue where invisible whitespace characters in a chord could cause transposition to not occur.
Fixed an issue with the Quick Pick screen that would cause the song viewer to redraw and move the current song to the top of the screen.
Fixed an issue with sticky notes where the border shadow would appear even when the opacity is dropped to a low number that is not zero. The shadow opacity is not keyed off of the opacity of the note color.
Fixed an issue in the color builder where you cannot create a fully transparent color.
Fixed an issue where the Editors menu would not be dismissed upon opening the Audio Media or Background Media Library on iOS 6 and earlier.
Fixed an issue where the songs in a set do not remove "The" when sorting alphabetically.
Fixed an issue where the Quick Pick screen does not work under iOS 5 and 6 due to the lack of a database function required for advanced sorting. This has been resolved by falling back to the original sorting method on those versions.
Fixed an issue with how the show/hide menubar is calculated that caused overlap onto the song caused by iOS 9 not returning the height of the status bar when hidden.
Fixed a token validation error that causes Spotify integration to crash.
Fixed an issue where chords are not showing in Console.
Fixed an issue where the action sheet appears under the keyboard when editing a note on a compact device like an iPhone.
Fixed an issue when assigning actions to sticky notes when using an iPhone.
Fixed an issue where using autoscroll and then tapping the scroll down pedal does not advance to the next song in the set but rather scrolls to the top until this is repeated.
Fixed an issue where the autoscroll forward pedal would continue to toggle autoscroll even if the page was already scrolled.
Fixed an issue when transposition with bracketed whitespace instances.
Fixed an issue where the songs in a set do not remove "The" when sorting alphabetically.
Fixed glitch with audio when moving to background.
Fixed an issue where chord lines settings were not being respected by Console.
Fixed a display issue when using mid-song transposition with the key tag.
Fixed a potential crash condition when the backup file is not created.
Fixed a potential crash condition that occurs if a byline cannot be determined in Internet-based importation.
Fixed a possible crash condition when attempting to move the lyrics projection preview.
REMOVALS
Removed the ability to use the lyrics projection preview widgets on iOS 5 and 6 due to implementation and performance issues.
Removed the ability to open the Background Media Library editor on iOS 5 since background media is not supported on that platform.

I dabble with both - bands I get hired to sit in with use either Onsong or SetlistMaker, so i own both.

FreeTime

There are a LOT of fixes for OnSong and more to be addressed, like edited songs that don't take, the pre-edited version always shows up. A simple-to-use app that scrolls lyrics for you this is not. In its defense there seem to be fixes for some things, but it would be nice if it just worked as opposed to having to read manuals and trying different things, it cuts into my playing time.  About a month ago, mid-song the lyrics started randomly scrolling by very fast, restarting did nothing, turns out that the bassplayers iphone (which has onsong in it) must have been causing it; it stopped when he (and his phone) left. It seems that when the developers turned it into a software suite they inadvertently broke things elsewhere. Bottom line is, I would like an easy to use app that does away with the binder. I'm keeping the binder too, just in case.

I have been using Setlist Manager to scroll lyrics and send MIDI program change to my Kemper and GR55. It works pretty much most of the time. Now if I could just get the Bluetooth to work consistent

What Bluetooth / MIDI Interface are you currently using?

QuoteYamaha MD-BT-01 bluetrooth-midi

and reports are it drops notes compared to other options (PUC+) (QuiccoSound mi.1)

QuoteFor anyone considering the new Yamaha UD-BT01 for use

I have tried it with the fishman triple play and compared to the new PUC+ which works perfectly(after a firmware update)

Yamaha UD-BT01 drops notes frequently. Any fast runs on the guitar result in many missing notes , other than that latency is acceptable and it connects fine 9 out of 10 times. Personally I will be using it for my kids piano.

We've tested OnSong running on iOS 11 since mid-summer and have had nearly 250,000 user sessions running the current version of OnSong on the latest operating systems from Apple. We are pleased to announce that the current version of OnSong 1.99995 works well on iOS 11.

This doesn't mean that it's absolutely perfect. If you use external video for lyrics projection or stage monitor mode, you will need to know some workarounds.

We have a new version nearly ready to release.  We are waiting for our hardware and service vendors to update their frameworks to ensure future compatibility. In the meantime, you can take a look at what we are up to as we continue refining the upcoming release including Google Drive and Flic smart button integration.
