This might be a dumb question. When checking to see if version is up to date, does USB cable have to be on? How does the unit know it's up to date. In all tutorials, I don't see anyone using USB to check.

No USB cable is needed

However updated instructions for checking your recent production Katana amp firmware version and which lights light up remain missing in action now that Roland is shipping "rev 2 Katanas that (at this hour) have stale 2.00 firmware and need be updated to the latest  Rev 2.02 firmware

Thanks for the reply. How in the world does the amp know firmware is out of date? I'm guessing the last time it was plugged to PC with the program it synched the version number.

its rather simple  Its the sequence of lights that indicate the firmware version -
QuotePlease check the version of the system working on your KATANA
* Move the [POWER CONTROL] switch to "STANDBY."
* Turn the POWER switch on while holding down the [ TAP ] button.
* If any "TONE SETTING" indicator is flashing, carry out update.

The currently installed firmware version is indicated by how the Amp CH lights flash after holding down the "TAP" button during power ON.

Each firmware version has a different light sequence -

Someday we may build a "decoder ring" document for determining all Katana Firmware versions  ( there have been 3 firmware updates since the product was released , which renders most Katana update procedure docs "stale"

Admsustaniac, you are awesome! Thanks for that explanation. I never would've guessed that. 👍👍👍

If you take the version number 2.04 then each digit is represented by different LED combinations. Putting the power switch to 0.5w shows you the first digit, 50w is the second digit and 100w is the third digit. When you select the digit the effects LEDs appear to be the binary representation.

2.04 is:
0.5w=010
50w=000
100w=100

2.02 is:
0.5w=010
50w=000
100w=010

I never installed 2.03 but it should be
0.5w=010
50w=000
100w=011
