I'm a sputteringly huge fan of Terje and some of his textural experiments on his collaboration with cellist David Darling got me back into guitar synth type equipment.  Glad to find videos for some of this.

If you want to hear Terje's guitar synthesizer experiments I'd recommend these, all on ECM records:

-Terje Rypdal / Barre Phillips "Three Day Moon":
Of this record, Stereo Review said "Draw down the lights, pull the shades, put on the space suits".  It's far out!

-Terje Rypdal/Miroslav Vitous/Jack DeJohnette:
Lots of guitar synth on this one too.  "Seasons" is a good example.

-Terje Rypdal/Miroslav Vitous/Jack DeJohnette "To Be Continued" (the track "Maya" is a big one for what sounds like a GR-100 electronic guitar module in spots)

-Terje Rypdal/David Darling "EOS" ("Light Years" sounds like there are arpeggio sections with GR-100 envelope filtering subtly changing as the tune evolves).

-Terje Rypdal/Descendre (sequel to "Waves" [a Must Have IMO]).  There's quite a lot of synthesizer on this album but not sure if it's guitar synth but the textures are perfect.

-Terje Rypdal/Waves (amazing jazz rock fusion classic with introspective ambient bits) - instrumentation: guitar, RMI Keyboard Computer, Arp Synthesizer, Mini-Moog, 4 6 and 8 string bass, drums.  There's a ring mod guitar on "The Dain Curse" that sounds like an electric piano.

Just get it all and thank me later.

Greetings,

Thanks for posting this, I'd not heard of him before. Really good stuff! Then again, anything Jack DeJohnette is involved with is likely to be awesome! I've not been able to find too many good GR-500 examples and never had a chance to play one.

Regards, Jim

Avskjed is one of the best recordings that band made. Did you know David Torn recorded a kind of cover version? It's pretty good.

Earlier this year I was working on a composition homework using a 2-octave decatonic scale and the chords insisted that I use the rhythm, tempo and phrasing from Avskjed. I'll try attaching an image. (It worked! Is there a way to inline an uploaded image?)

That's a very good album. The opener Per Ulv is my favorite Terje Rypdal recording. Fun, friendly, low-key jazz rock with delicious sound, especially from bass and trumpet. Palle Miklelborg plays wonderfully. There's ring mod on the trumpet towards the end that he uses really well. It's not easy to be musical with that effect.

PS I have the LP of Waves since about 1983. The sleeve is made of a paper with a nice canvas-like texture and the cover photo is lovely. Digital sounds better but is less good for cover art.

Yes, Waves is what got me into Rypdal.  The KQRS 92.5 FM (Minneapolis) jazz show played "Per Ulv" late at night in the middle of winter just after the album came out and I was hooked "who the heck is this?"  Fantastic.
I have Waves on LP and CD.  The cover art reminds me of some bare trees in Minnesota during a blizzard for some reason.
