Right-angle GK cables?
« on: December 16, 2009, 11:34:49 AM »
Well, I searched the forums and surprisingly didn't see anything related to this...

Does anyone make a GK cable with a right-angle connector on one end?  I know from the old VG-8/88 forums that someone used a Kenwood DIN connector to make his own, but I am a crapy solderer.  Making a 3 pin XLR is one thing, but a 13-pin would just be a huge PITA for me, and likely just frustrate me.

I've seen pics of GK cables with a Right-Angle connector on a Japanese website (I think I followed a link from this forum), but thats it.

Anyone know of a source?  Even if it is a short cable that would be fine since I have a 13-pin splitter box that I could use as a cable coupler.

Thanks,

Brain21

I have not found any in the US.
Maybe someone else can chime in, but Japan is much further ahead in 13-pin gear !

Don't let this thread die, someone is bound to save us with some 90's...I would be fine with just the end piece as I am a great solderer however I cannot even find a 90 end piece!

Yes only the plug will do.
Soldering is no problem for me either.

I'm located in Tokyo. Spent an afternoon in a popular electronic parts district (Akihabara - Radio City) looking for the 13 pin plug and couldn't even get the straight one. Will continue to search and publish findings here.

Meanwhile here's a source for ready cables from Japan : http://www.proix.com/netshop/13pin.html

Please let us know how it goes getting the right-angle connectors.

I am sure lots of people would buy some as it's really hard to play sitting down with the straight plug sticking out.

How much do they want for that right-angle cable assembly?

Great find Embers!
Now a strait connector is also needed because these 90 plugs seem to be sealed and cannot
be opened and soldered.

Try contacting these guys.

The comment at the bottom of the page says "Please note, the item may vary with either straight or right angled on one end depending on stock! Please ask before purchasing if this is a concern!" Sounds like the cable they describe is exactly what you want.

Just a warning.

these Kenwood car stereo cables ARE NOT COMPATIBLE - they have many pins shorted together, and a few missing connections, and WILL DAMAGE ROLAND GEAR!!!

But often you can use these cables for parts

Avoid the molded 13 pin plugs, Look for this type, which can be disasembled and resoldered to a proper roland 14 pin cable .

Heres a right angle 13 pin connector , spirited away from a Volkswagon  Kenwood Stereo adapter cable

by contrast,  - here a molded 13 pin cable - best to avoid

Yeah, I knew about those.  Unfortunately for me it would be an excercise in frustration.  Now I'm wondering if I can pick one up and pay someone like $30 to do the soldering for me.  :-)  I have a GK cable that seems to have an issue withone fo the end connectors, so I can sacrifice that one...

We have tried these Kenwood Car stereo cables before - unfortunately they are NOT compatible with the Roland GK 13 pin interface.

You may use them for parts and build your own cable

Yeah, I discovered that in my due diligence in prior posts in what -- four? five? -- threads in these parts, concerned with this particular hardware?

This is a lamentable lack of supply in a market where demand is not lacking.

Just a thought here...what about getting the male and female 13-pin bits from Digikey, and manufacturing a right-angle adaptor, into which you could just plug a standard cable...... ;D
