Here's a good one:

EFM makes GREAT sounding soft synths, and gives them away.  These are as good as a lot of the commercial ones.  The Prophet 600 is a very simple synth to learn the basics on, and this is actually very usable for a guitar synth.  I use this one for some decent pads and strings.

Audiotrax, Elantric, thanks for the replies.

But I'm really looking for something very specific to Roland implementation and nomenclature in the GR55 PCM tone generator.  Maybe I misspoke earlier; I'm not completely new to modular/analog synths.  I have a few VSTs including Reaktor and all of the virtual synths that that implies, and I had a Nord Micro a few years back... but there are still terms on the PCM page that are unfamiliar, and the way that controls are routed to be interdependent with one another is a bit vague.  I've tried to educate myself by way of trial and error, but it can be difficult when one control has no apparent impact unless other controls are just so, etc.  Roland's GR55 documentation is characteristically unhelpful with statements like:  "XXX:  controls the PCM tone XXX level" and so on.

I'd just love to see... eventually... a real GR55 master shaping totally custom PCM tones with a video camera running, while he/she talks through what he's doing.

Really nice video, doha1696.  Love that classic Roland brass sound  :D

Hi Dominic,
Your hope has come true !  Absolutely love that video, thanks for posting .
And good on you !
It showcases not only your great playing but the awesome applications of the GR55.

One question:  are you saying that you recorded the backing track ( drums , bass etc) all using the GR 55 too?

doha1696

...No, Drums have been recorded with Ezdrummer and Bass's a real bass (Musicman Stingray). All the other parts of the track have been done with the GR55.

Nice sounding, tight little demo of the piano tracking here (with another Tele :) ).  I let him know I posted his video.

What really amazes me about this last video is that I can plainly see the guitarist moving between chords with his fingers sliding along the strings - something I would typically do with a "real" guitar tone in order to mute properly at volume, but which I know I would never get away with while tracking a guitar synth piano.  i.e. I can't believe he isn't having a nightmare of a time with harmonics spawning random notes all over the place.  I'm just amazed at how relaxed some of these players look, using tones that require nail-biting attention to technique when I use them.

Here's an interesting video I watched last night on YouTube. Personally, I wouldn't do this.

Better solutions exist

But most just use an unmounted GK-3 and connect their normal electric guitar 1/4" cable to the Guitar input on the GK-3

Build a 1/4" Guitar Input > GK 13 pin out adapter cable?
