The medical world has been revolutionized by technology again and again, yet even the smallest advancement is still able to surprise and delight us. National Geographic has drawn our attention to one app that provides the blind with an aural alternative to vision. EyeMusic SSD (sensory substitution device), an app for iOS devices, captures shapes in the environment and translates them into what the developers call a "Soundscape" through musical notes.

Visually impaired individuals with the app will be able to plug in headphones, hold their phones up in front of them and allow the camera to translate the image into sound, but it takes some training to learn how to "read" the music. For example, a smile might be heard as "a string of high notes descending and then ascending again," while a frown would be the opposite. If you want to give the app a try yourself, it's free to download on the App Store.

We love music and high-end audio.  The PS Audio family has been providing products and services that support both for over 40 years.

Beginnings

The summer of 1973 was hot in Santa Maria, atypical for the Central California Coast. I was the program director at a local rock and roll FM station when the FCC cited management for poor audio performance. The complaint focused on two pieces of equipment: the phono preamplifier and the STL (Studio Transmitter Link) to the main broadcast tower.

Despite my lofty title of program director, I made little money and was always up for side work. I had been designing musical synthesizers in my spare time and saw the FCC's demands as a golden opportunity for extra money. The fix for the STL was beyond my capabilities but I was confident I could rebuild the turntable preamplifiers and was given the job. I had one week to design and build a preamplifier from scratch.

I checked out a book from the local library called the Op Amp Cookbook and found a phono preamplifier recipe based on two op amps and a handful of resistors and capacitors. The station engineer happened to have four 709 op amps handy and gave them to me. I built the circuit in a day, powered it with two 9 volt batteries, placed the contraption into a Roi-Tan cigar box and auditioned it in my system. It sounded much better than my Kenwood integrated and I hoped to get a second opinion before presenting it as finished to management.

One of the station's advertisers, the Ball Waterbed Company, was owned by a local Audio nut named Norm Little. I took the cigar box to Norm's shop and asked to audition it on his tri-amped Audio Research system. Norm took one look and said "there's no way you're connecting that to my stereo. It doesn't even have a plug!" Instead, he recommended one of his waterbed installers, Stan Warren.

Stan's tiny one-bedroom house in Orcutt was the first Audiophile home I had ever seen. I was surprised the living room consisted of only four objects: a couch, a pair of speakers, a table with stereo equipment and an odd looking turntable. The Rabco ST4 sat on a wooden base supported by four legs extending into the ground through holes cut into the wooden floor. Equally surprising, Stan was apparently married and this behavior was tolerated by his wife Gwen. We spent several hours comparing the cigar box to a Dynaco Pat 4 preamplifier and when I got up to leave, Stan told me the performance of my little circuit was excellent.

Two weeks later I got a knock on my front door. Stan Warren walked into our living room, its wooden floor without holes, and set $500 cash on the table.

"I want to purchase half of your company." He said.

"What company?"

"The company you and I are going to build to make those boxes you brought over."

"The cigar box?"

"Yup."

"Who would buy those?"

"Audiophiles."

"Audiophiles? What the hell is an Audiophile?"

"Someone who would buy our box."

"Ok," I said, drooling over the $500. "What would we call this new company?"

"Why, I thought it obvious," said Stan, "PS Audio, for Paul and Stan."

And thus PS Audio was formed in my living room so many decades ago. It took a year of hard work to finish a production ready version of the Cigar Box Wonder and we began selling them direct-to-consumer for $59.95 with high-end audio's first money back guarantee, in April 1974. " Paul McGowan

Recently a Blackstar HT40 like the one in the picture arrived. It had been arrested for attempted homicide, having tried to kill the owner with a jolt of electricity that actually melted a couple of guitar strings. It was bought used, so the warranty is not in existence.

The magnetic resonator piano (MRP) is a hybrid acoustic-electronic instrument augmenting the grand piano. By using electromagnets to induce the strings to vibration, the MRP allows the performer to continuously shape the sound of every note.

Motivation
The design of the acoustic piano has been essentially unchanged for over a century. The instrument's ubiquity and versatility mask a surprising limitation: once a note is struck, the performer has no means to alter its sound before it is released. Consider the following simple gesture which is impossible on the piano:

Though some electronic keyboards allow the performer to shape a note after it has been sounded, few if any match the richness and expressivity of the acoustic piano. No concert pianist would choose even the most sophisticated digital piano over a moderate-quality acoustic grand. The MRP combines the rich sound of the acoustic piano with the flexibility of digital synthesis by augmenting, rather than replacing, an acoustic instrument.

Musical Capabilities

https://youtu.be/f79d_oVqv4Y
The MRP preserves all the sounds and techniques of the acoustic piano, while expanding its vocabulary to include:

Indefinite sustain
Crescendos (including crescendos from silence)
Harmonics on each string (8 to 16 harmonics are usable on the lower strings)
New timbres which can be shaped in real time
Subtle pitch bends
In contrast to the conventional (hammer-actuated) piano sound, the sounds of the MRP are pure and ethereal, emphasizing the fundamental frequency of each string over its high partials.
(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmusic.ece.drexel.edu%2Ffiles%2FNavigation%2FResearch_projects%2FMRP%2Fmrp-spectrum-piano.png&hash=e7287f29ed96fa9e65592663ecca841c9f33ff74)
Comparison of spectra for traditional piano (left) and MRP (right). MRP example uses sinusoidal actuator waveform. Other spectra are possible by varying the signal to the actuators, though none exhibit the number of upper partials seen in the piano waveform.
The following video presents clips from a recent performance of Secrets of Antikythera by Andrew McPherson. In this video, the MRP is played both from the piano keyboard and a secondary keyboard atop the piano, each of which are configured to produce different sounds.

Electromagnetic String Actuation
Electromagnetic String Actuation
Electromagnetic actuators directly induce the strings to vibration, bypassing the piano's percussive hammer mechanism. One solenoid electromagnet is mounted above each note of the instrument, approximately 1/8" above the strings. (48 notes are covered in the present prototype, easily expanded to 88.) The electromagnetic actuators work on the principle of ferromagnetism, in which a magnetic field exerts a force on the ferromagnetic (steel) piano strings.

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmusic.ece.drexel.edu%2Ffiles%2FNavigation%2FResearch_projects%2FMRP%2Fmrp-complete.jpg&hash=e0d9edc55fc276b6bc40a891420c993fa3cac801)
Left: Complete MRP system, showing amplifier at bottom and cables running to actuators inside instrument. Right: Electromagnetic actuators above the piano strings.
The generated magnetic field is directly proportional to the current through the actuator. By modulating the current at the natural frequency of the string (or one of its harmonics), the string is induced to vibration without any physical contact.

The actuator system can be installed in any acoustic grand piano. Because tuning varies slightly among instruments, a pickup is placed on the piano soundboard which measures the combined vibrations of every string. A digital phase-locked loop control system keeps the waveform through each actuator aligned in frequency and phase with the natural motion of the corresponding string, reinforcing and amplifying the string's vibration. The sound of the MRP is produced acoustically by the vibration of strings and soundboard; no external speakers are used.

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmusic.ece.drexel.edu%2Ffiles%2FNavigation%2FResearch_projects%2FMRP%2Fmrp-pll.png&hash=0b7fafcb8db9aa090e409c3940382384613ab919)
Phase-locked loop system, implemented digitally for each note. The output is frequency-locked with the input, with a fixed phase offset determined by the control input Δφ.
Actuator waveforms are generated by a computer which responds to the actions of a human performer. A specialized amplifier and signal-routing system allows up to 88 notes to be controlled using many fewer audio output channels. For example, a six-channel audio interface will allow up to six simultaneous notes, which can be played on any of the piano strings. Modifying the amplitude, frequency and spectrum of each actuator waveform allows continuous shaping of the dynamics and timbre of the corresponding piano note.

(https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmusic.ece.drexel.edu%2Ffiles%2FNavigation%2FResearch_projects%2FMRP%2Fmrp-amplifier.jpg&hash=cd863ff116e16ddde03e5ca2f065a07dbfa820be)
Amplifier and signal routing system. One amplifier channel is used for each actuator, but any (smaller) number of audio output channels can be used.

I've followed Tom since day one I heard his stuff here in southern Cal. and then saw
him live , the smoke in front of the stage said it all  ;D.

Running Down A Dream spoke/speaks to me . I had liked it before I was on the road
,  but while traveling Route 66 to and from southern Cal to Chicago via Memphis it
seemed that song followed me down the road from state to state .  his song trigger
me writing one .

I will never miss Tom , he's always near by in a song . One month & two weeks is/was
the difference on our age . Never met, hope I might cross path's , one never knows in
the music business . Mike Campbell's contribution to the success is The HeartBreakers
has always gotten my attention . I wonder what's in store for him and the other members .

Thanks for this link on Tom . [ I Won't Back Down ] is truly the rallying cry of what Tom
represented in the Baby Boomers , IMHO .

https://www.rfvenue.com/blog/spectrum-analysis-for-wireless-mics-and-iems-part-1
Every week I receive a number of calls from customers with wireless issues that look a lot like "it was working fine for a year, and now we're having problems". After asking a few questions I always ask if they can send me a scan file or screenshot, only to find out that most cannot since they don't have access to an RF spectrum analyzer.

RF Explorer Pro Audio Edition Connected to Wireless Mic System 2There is a certain path to troubleshooting RF that may produce results, but I have to say that without being able to visualize what's going on in the RF environment, the best I can do is guess most times. Gone are the days when you could simply take a dozen new wireless mics out of their boxes, set them to channels 1-12 and have them all up and running. These days there are more wireless devices competing for less available spectrum, and if you can't see those devices in your venue, you may be switching channels many times until you find a dozen open ones. Maybe the building you're in will shield you from outside interference and you'll get lucky with the auto-scanning feature on your wireless mic receivers... or maybe not.

Simply put, if you are a trying to run a multi-channel wireless microphone or IEM system, a spectrum analyzer is required equipment. And if your best weapon against interference is the ability to move transmitter frequencies... how do you know where to move them? What is the interference? Is it transmitters in the studio next door or is it noise from an LED wall across the entire operating band? It is very difficult to predict the presence of interfering signals without the use of proper RF measurement equipment, and even harder to find the right solution when you run into them.

So once you get your shiny new spectrum analyzer, now what do you do?

Baseline Scan

The first step is to establish a Baseline Scan.

To do that, turn off ALL your gear ... everything in your rack, your stage lighting and ambient lighting, all the video equipment and other electronics, since any of these can emit RF.

Set the sweep range of your spectrum analyzer to include 20-30 MHz above and below the frequency range of your mic receivers. So if your mics operate 470-530 MHz, set your sweep range to 450-550 MHz. Depending on what kind of interference is present, you may want to look further out of band. In the US, that might mean reviewing activity in the 600 MHz band to see if any high power sources [*AHEM* T-Mobile] generating noise down into the 500s.

RF Explorer Pro Audio Edition Vantage 2

For this setup you will ideally want to use an omni antenna connected to your spectrum analyzer, since the goal is to measure all RF activity present in all directions in the venue. Make sure the analyzer is in a position where it will have good line of sight in all directions and be free from obstructions.

Record and save this measurement as this will be your baseline. Hopefully what you will see are just a few local UHF TV channels with some nice blank space around them and a relatively low noise floor below -80dB (hopefully well below that!).

DTV Stations Vantage RF Spectrum Scan 6 MHz Wide Digital TV Transmitters with carrier frequencies

Now systematically turn things on that will be active in your venue.  Starting with your lighting systems and take a new scan. Then turn on your audio gear and make another scan. Hopefully things will change very little and your noise floor will remain low. Now your video projector, monitors, video walls, etc and make another measurement. If no substantial changes occur you'll be ready to start to calculate what frequencies will be best for your wireless systems in your venue. If you do encounter interference or noise from sources within the venue, it's important to understand where they are located and what type of noise they are introducing. Even if the source itself can't be removed, you can make much better decisions on various aspects of the system like antenna selection and position, filtering, and frequency coordination. And with a solid understanding of Baseline conditions on a new install, you'll have a much better idea which frequency ranges to specify for the project.

Stay tuned for our next installment in our spectrum analysis series: Operational Scans and Interference Analysis.

Waveform –  a new print magazine for electronic musicians – is now available.

Waveform Magazine is now available.
Waveform is a free quarterly print magazine about 'synthesizers and those who inhabit that world'.

The print subscription is advertiser-supported and is free to all US subscribers. Subscribers outside the US can get the magazine in digital format.

We talked with Editor Ellison Wolf at SynthPlex 2019, and he said his vision was to do something similar to Tape Op magazine, but focused on synths and electronic musicians.

Issue #1 features interviews with: Suzanne Ciani, Dave Smith, Folktek, Noise Reap, and 4ms. It also features a section on synth DIY, DivKid's "Underrated", Shop Talk, gear reviews, music reviews, and more.

You can subscribe at the Waveform site.
