I have been playing around with the synth sounds of the VG-99 trying to get as many real instrument patches as possible. Thanks to some of the posted patches, I have been able to come up with fairly realistic sounds for flute, oboe, violin and cello.

One of the things that I have found to be quite productive is to look up the frequency response of various real instruments (eg. Violin) and then play around with the posted patches adjusting the EQ settings to more closely align the output sound to the typical frequency response of the real instrument. I have also used the EQ monitoring feature of Apple's Logic 8 to see what is happening more clearly.

Finding the right starting point is the part I am trying to understand more clearly. Does anyone have any guidance as to how each of the synths correspond to making a starting point for a real instrument (eg. where would you start to get a sax type sound). I have seen some creative approaches used on this site (such as using -1 octave sitar for upright bass).

I am fascinated by the sounds that Bill Ruppert has been able to achieve, and would dearly love to better understand the underlying principles of building sounds. I believe that playing synths on the VG-99 offers so much more expressive ability than using MIDI.

An example of some of the sounds I have been able to get out of the VG-99. Thanks to Rick Connor for the use of his great track "The Parting". The attached mp3 is a version with an overlay of flute, oboe, cello and violin type sounds using the VG-99.

Great sounds, thanks for sharing, would like to hear more of the flute and others by themselves without other sounds layerd together.
Thanks again
Michael

Really nice 'parting' track.

I recently posted some synth type pad sounds over at my youtube page.  http://www.youtube.com/aliensporebomb and look for my videos with 'vg-99' in the headings.

Nice; are you going to post the .mid files for download?

Another patch built into the VG99, "GR Heaven" seems like a good stepping off point for editing and modifying, both range and timbre.
Really interesting, it sounds guitar like but not, really unusual.
