There's an old trick for achieving better GR300 COSM  sound on VG-99 (works for GR-55 and GP-10 too)

Read here:

Optimal GK TYPE Hex Pickup Settings.

Quote# Hot Tip -  However note that Many VG-99 Patches may work better with a hotter string sensitivity. Often the GR300 emulation functions, or two handed EVH tapping styles respond better with a hotter "GK String Sensitivity" than "20-30" -  - more like "80-100"  - so the trick is  USE A DIFFERENT GK PU Memory Slot, and assign a different GK String Sensitivity setting for each GK PU memory slot. Use those PIEZO PU type memory slots  (even with a GK-3) and program several unique string sensitivities for the same guitar add 2 band EQ to taste.
The GK Settings can be specified individually for each PATCH. Use this setting when switching among multiple STRING SENSITIVITY SETTINGS as you perform. As with everything on the VG-99 - Adjust to taste! There is no wrong way - if it sounds good it is good.

The Gk 13 pin cable is all analog, and prone to signal drop out, even brand new Roland GK cables, and often exhibiting a problem for just one string dropping out.

follow the instructions here first:

This document "INFOCUS02.pdf" is a "MUST READ" for all GR-55  / VG-99 owners, it walks you through how to use the  Roland Librarian.

Majority of folks simply install the VG-99 USB Audio/MIDI driver and use one USB 2.0 printer cable to connect their VG-99 to their computer for use with the VG-99 Editor / Librarian.

Get the VG-99 USB Driver for your computer's OS type / version  here

And read the VG-99 Owners Manual and all support workshop docs

Do you get any sound?

Check the manual p 105
also check the chain where the normal PU is positioned

I have not used the guitar input only the gk so I might
not be 100 , but that's where I start anyw.
I've used the normal PU though
swimming with a hole in my body

I play Country music too, I'm just not sure which country it's from...

The COSM guitar can be moved freely along the chain leaving FX applied before the COSM Guitar insert point to the NORMAL MAG PU only, but everything added after the COSM Guitar insert applies to both MAG and COSM.

Scenario 1 is possible using the chain order. I.e.
